This is probably 3.5 if you consider launderette outside of Austin, but within Austin (and I assume Texas in general) it is a bright shining star for new American/ California cuisine.
We were recommended to go here by a friend who used lived here, and from our uber drivers reaction it is known as one of the nicer restaurants in the city.
I called ahead to try and make a res, but of course they could not accommodate. They recommended we come anyway as they had an outdoor space for cocktails etc while you wait. This whole no reservation thing ended up working well since we didn't end up arriving until about 9:30 pm and there was tons of space.
Speaking of space, the outdoor seating is beautiful. Really this is what caused me to round up star wise. The wood bench which runs the length of the patio was perfect for a warm austin night, and I could see returning for that alone. It was so quiet and beautiful since the restaurant is off the beaten path and almost in a neighborhood, we got essentially zero foot traffic. It just felt like a romantic culinary oasis ;)
Finally, to the food. It was all very good (picky details below) but the cocktails were super (really interesting), I had some sort of ginger lemon gin drink (akin to a bees knees) and my boyfriend had a mezcal negroni which he seemed to thoroughly enjoy.
Carpaccio - overly spicy, although we were warned about this and not cut thinly as with traditional carpaccios, it was cubed, so it felt closer to a ceviche or poke
Burrata - good but the sauce it was sitting in, I found to be too much as well as slightly too sweet, but that's a matter of preference
Chicken thighs - spice rubbed, very small (came with two stacked in the bowl) overall just nothing special and def not worth the $20 price, most disappointing item.
Brussels and Zucchini - both very good, no complaints. I would highly recommend going big on the vege section and apps/ possibly skipping the "mains" although the chicken def was not a main in my book.
This brings me to dessert. Their desserts all seemed very interesting, but we saw the birthday cake ice cream sandwich and decided to go with that (whimsical right?) anyway, my boyfriend couldn't stop comparing it to a chipwich and to be honest I was pretty disappointed. The ice cream within was very salty, and it did feel like something that could come in a plastic wrapper. I think the other desserts could have been lovely, so I do wish maybe the waitress would have prefaced what we were going to get so we might have changed course.
Overall launderette is a great stop if you're in Austin and looking for new american set in a hipster space (which I always am). read more
