I visited Las Tablas during 2023 Chicago Restaurant Week with my niece. The food was so tasty and flavorful. The staff was attentive and very kind to us. We got there around 6:30pm and it wasn't very crowded. It got pretty crowded around 8 and our server wasn't as attentive but still checked in on us. I am really surprised by the positive reviews. We had dinner on Friday night. There was live music. We went at 7:30pm. It was not packed. We ordered 2 margaritas at $14 a piece. They were watery, no booze and tasted poor. There was an attempt to put a ring of salt around the glass which was spotty. So disappointing on the margaritas. We had the $61 meat with seafood platter. All of the food on the platter tasted like seafood. The potatoes tasted like seafood. The chicken tasted like seafood. Very small portion of skirt steak. I'm actually still shocked at how bad the food and drinks were. I don't think this place is going to make it. Service was good. Ambiance is loud and seating isn't cozy. My family has been here many times although there Customer Service is ALWAYS HORRIBLE. One time I was the server going to bar n retrieving our drinks. This last time was the KILLER. There was a hair, a long curly hair embedded in the Carnite Frita, combination platter. The server said she would remove from bill. When the bill came they REFUSED to take it off the bill. Horrible Customer Service at its finest. They "HEAD" server (I believe) never once apologized and I believe HE (bald head) was the one to refuse to remove off bill. How can you not remove this off the bill?? Do the cooks not wear a hair net? This was my first visit to a Colombian steakhouse. My sister in law recommended the restaurant since she'd been a couple of times before and enjoyed her experiences. I wasn't sure what to expect but she said there would be lots of meat. And boy was she right. She ordered for the family, all 7 of us. We started with several appetizers; empanada combination plate (beef, chicken, cheese)/$10, crab cake with plantain chips/$12, arepa rellena (traditional cheese-corn bread with shredded chicken in mushroom sauce)/$8, chorizo con arepa/$7. My favorite was the crab cake and the plantain chips served on the side almost outshined them all. For the main dish we had Picada Mar y Tierra (2) which were hearty platters indeed. They consisted of: grilled and sliced skirt steak, rib-eye steak, pork loin, chicken breast, homemade chorizo, plus shrimp, calamari, baby octopus, pork ribs, arepa (corn pancake), crunchy green plantain, sweet plantain, yuca and potato - $59.00. The meats were flavorful but some a little over cooked. The veggies were a bit bland. For dessert we opted for tres leches and Oreo cake ($6 each). The tres leches could have been moister. And for some reason it came out with a candle. We had somewhat of a language barrier all throughout dinner. We had two servers and difficulty communicating with both. And they were the only two working the front of the house including the bar. Needles to say the service was slow. I went there last night with my family to celebrate a birthday. We were a party of 6 adults and 4 children. We arrived at 7:25 for a 7:30 reservation & were seated at about 7:50. Now the wait time to be seated was not the issue for us , nor was the food. The food was delicious, as always. My family and I have been loyal customers for 10+ years but last night was a slow motion train wreck. Our server (Pilar) had the absolute worst attitude from the beginning. Again the food was AMAZING! The service not quite so... Refills forget about it! My brother-in-law asked for a lemonade refill which he never got. If it wasn't for the pitchers of water he would've eaten his food without a beverage. I ordered a side of beans and rice and also did not get it. Our server's (Pilar) attitude really made our dining experience really really really unpleasant. She seemed annoyed when we requested or reminded her of things. It was a full house, I get that. Las Tablas' food is fantastic and worth spending money on, but their customer service is terrible and poorly managed. We showed up between 9:30 and 9:45 pm on Saturday, and no hostess was around. Not one person spoke to us while we waited. Two more parties showed up after us. None of us were seated. The two parties behind us left because they refused to wait any longer. We spoke to another server and informed her that we hadn't been seated and they had already lost out on money because two parties had already left. The server sat us, and we waited for our server to come. At this point, the hostess finally came out and set up another party. Our server still hadn't arrived, so I informed the hostess about not being served. Come to find out, the server that seated us was, in fact, our server. Our server knew we were there and didn't communicate with us. Our server was also assigned two more tables and did not communicate with them. One of the tables left angry, and the other received services from the hostess. Another table arrived, and the server didn't bother to communicate or serve them as well--all three tables, she just walked away and went to the back. As an individual who has worked in this industry, I find this restaurant service terrible. The fact that everyone in the restaurant just watched as multiple people waited to be seated, didn't care they lost customers, and let people sit without being serviced shows their needs to be staff changed. Definitely worth it! Great atmosphere and servers. My gf and I stopped in for the first time after passing by for years. Our servers name was Manny (I believe, it was hard to hear with the mask but my hearing isn't that great). He ran through the menu with us after we asked for recommendations. I'm not a mojito fan (really hate fake/premade/overly sweet drinks) but he recommended them so I went with a strawberry mojito and it was fantastic then went with kiwi! Real fruit, wasn't sweet or overly minty but really refreshing. The band started playing during our meal and the place got busy with a wide variety of customers. I'll most certainly be back. I'd suggest going around 630, by 730 it was getting busy and I only assume it was going to get busier. We got a meal for two that had a little of everything and an appetizer which was phenomenal. We are our fill and had leftovers for lunch tomorrow. The only down side is that our server was also responsible for making drinks for the tables he was waiting on so when it got busy he was behind the bar but otherwise it was a great time/experience. I ordered the Columbian Sazerac. She warned me that it is a strong drink. I told her that I am a strong man. And I am! So strong. It was a tasty drink, which I overpowered with ease. Not really a Sazerac, though. Or even Columbian. It consists of rum, Frangelico, something and rye. Garnished with a strawberry. I've never had a strawberry garnish. I'm all grown up now! The first three ingredients dominate, giving it a heavy molasses flavor - earthy sweet, not sickly sweet. I liked it and would order it again when I return, but it won't usurp New Orleans' finest creation anytime soon. There are also several mojitos and fruity martinis to choose from, if you are into that sort of thing. But the cocktails are just a warm up to the headliner, which is STEAK. And quite a headliner it is. We had the skirt steak and the churrasco, cooked medium rare, and both were amazing. The skirt steak is deeply marinated and glistens on the slab of wood. It has a deep, rich, impeccable flavor. The churrasco, a NY Strip cut, was also divine. Juicy and full of flavor, I would have to confess that it surpasses my go-to for South American steaks, El Nandu in Logan Square. The steaks come with plantains and a variety of starchy tubers. The plantain is juicy and delicious. You can also order rice and beans, which are good, but it is white rice, not the Spanish rice of El Nandu. Empanadas here have a good meat flavor, but a very brittle crispy shell, not the textured style of El Nandu. For wine, order the Los Haroldos Malbec Reserve. It is an exemplary South American Malbec, earthy and chewy, very Old World, and a steal at $35. The desserts are similarly amazing. They have a chocolate mousse and an Oreo mousse; the chocolate mousse cake is everything you would want. We will be back for the Oreo. read more

Yelp hyped this place up for me... what are you guys talking about?? Maybe we came on the wrong night but this was not the ambience I had pictured. The inside is dim and roomy enough. We were able to make a last-minute reservation through OpenTable and were seated right away. The host was friendly and so was our server, but the live music was LOUD! especially for how early it was (7:30pm on a Wednesday). It was hard to hear our server and each other over the music. A little after 8pm the music ended and we were free to converse with each other without spitting all over the empanada sampler we shared (which I totally recommend, by the way - the beef is the best). We shared the meats plate for two among the four of us, with leftovers to spare. The skirt steak aka entrana was delicious and we all agreed that we should have just gotten a huge plate of that! A solid 4.5 but I rounded up for what was a really great experience overall. First of all, this restaurant is beautiful-- it's big and open and even on a busy Saturday night, it never felt chaotic or like anyone else was all in our business. My kiwi martini was delicious and I didn't hesitate for a minute on a second one. The man had one of their cocktails but it was real heavy on the Frangelico flavor so he swapped it out for some red wine and was much happier. For food, we had the guacamole and a huge Colombian sampler plate with like ten different things on it so we could try a little of everything. My favorites were both types of steak, chorizo and the arepas. The only thing I didn't like was the yucca, which was a little underdone. This was an absolutely gigantic portion-- we ate what felt like A LOT and still had a full box of leftovers to take home. The guacamole was served with plantain chips and it was bursting with flavor- not bland at all. All in all, really great food and reasonably priced given the size of the entree. They also had a band playing some variations of jazz standards. I love jazz music so I enjoyed the live music. This was a looooooong meal; we were there for over two hours. We were in no rush so it ended up being a really nice evening but there is no doubt that things took a while. If you were in a hurry (or on a first date), I would probably give this a hard pass as the service is leisurely, but if you are looking for a nice night out, this is worth checking out! read more

For being in Chicago practically my whole life, I've never made my way over to eating at Las Tablas. I know a decade ago, this was the place to be to have some Colombian food. My fiance was craving empanadas and wanted to go here. We ordered the empanada plate ($10) and the entrana skirt steak and chicken breast combination ($21). All in all, food was okay. Nothing to write home about. The empanada plate comes with 2 beef, 2 chicken, and 2 cheese. My fiance enjoyed the chicken empanadas, and we both thought the cheese ones were not worth ordering again. I'm actually quite disappointed with the empanadas as a whole, but I guess the Colombian empanadas are made with corn flour instead of wheat flour and are much smaller than the ones I'm used to. They were a bit dry as well. The three sauces that were brought to the table were yummy, but I'm not really looking to drench everything I eat in sauce. The skirt steak was juicy and chewy, but very salty. Same with the chicken. I know Colombian food can be pretty salty, so maybe this cuisine just isn't for me. read more

Who doesn't love restaurant week? If you do... you're crazy. When else can you really get a gigantic and delicious meal (appetizer, entree, and dessert of a restaurant) without having to pay an arm and a leg? I thoroughly make use of this every year. This year Las Tablas was the census choice. At Las Tablas I ordered the grilled flank steak, beef and chicken empanadas, shrimp ceviche, rice and beans, and a coconut flan. Yes it was excessive, but it was restaurant week. All of it was already on the prefixed menu except for the ceviche. With all that being ordered I don't want to take to much of your time, so I'll focus on what I enjoyed the most. The flank steak was cooked to perfection. Flank steak is one of those steaks that can be easily cooked poorly because of the lack of fat content on steak. It can be cooked too much very quickly and all you get is chewy, unsatisfying piece of meat gum. At Las Tablas, they cooked it perfectly. It was juicy with the perfect sear and char on the exterior. The elegance in which it was prepared was impeccable. The flavors were pure and unmasked because they cooked it perfectly. It didn't need any sauce, but if one wanted, they could a little bit of chimichurri just to brighten the flavor profile. All in all the steak was excellently prepared. The other part of my meal that I truly enjoyed was the coconut flan. Let me preface this prefix this by stating I'm not a bit coconut guy. To be frank, I actively avoid coconut because I feel that coconut's flavor is a little overbearing. It's a one note flavor that messes us the cleanliness of the other flavors in a dish. However, for this flan, it worked. I'm not saying I would order this flan over a regular flan on a regular basis, but when I want a change I would order this again. The richness and sweetness of flan melded well with the coconut because it could hold up to the flavor. I can say I enjoyed how the flavor came together, and from me about coconut, that is a great compliment. Once again, restaurant week was spot on. Las Tablas did not disappoint, and I look forward to returning and trying more items on their menu. read more

I have been wanting to try Las Tablas for quite some time... but unfortunately, I was not impressed. A friend and I arrived about 6pm. There were only 2 tables filled, so we were able to get seated immediately. It was somewhat odd to me, though, that they were almost completely empty. I did, however, like the atmosphere and especially that fat Mona Lisa painting by the windows. The bar was typical. Our server came and took our drink orders. I had a glass of Simone Cabernet Sauvignon ($7). The glass came with lint all on the outside, and cork particles in the wine. I was surprised that this glass made it through at least two sets of hands before it made it to my table. I mean, I saw the lint and stuff in the wine immediately, how could it not have been seen by the bartender and server? I ordered the red snapper. It came with a salad, rice, and a plantain ($20 or $22, I forget). The snapper was a whole fried snapper. It wasn't really flavorful, and didn't come with any sauces (other than the sauces that they bring out in the beginning, none of which are very tasty). The best thing about my plate was the plantain.... but can you really mess up a plantain? My friend ordered (the name of the fish escapes me) a fish that came with steak, octopus, yuca, plantain, and half a potato. She was happy with her steak. I tried a piece, and although not bad, I must say I've had better. What would've really helped the food is if the sauces were better. I may have enjoyed my red snapper more. Our server, although nice, took a little too long to stop by occasionally. I'm not really one to call a server over, but if she was somewhere to be seen, I may have called her over (to rectify my linty-glass cork-in-my-wine situation). I ended up trying to get the cork out and chugging the wine.. because who in their right mind would waste wine? A little cork never hurt nobody! I don't normally like to review unless it's a positive experience, but I feel the need to share my recent and only experience at Las Tablas. 2 weeks ago I made reservations for 2, show up at my reservation time, and the hostess told me they must have written the wrong name down because my name wasn't there...okay, not a big deal. I'm redirected to the bar where I wait for 20 minutes--but none of the bartenders would even acknowledge me. Again, maybe a fluke, not a big deal. The straw that broke the camel's back was when I was finally sat by a server, but no one came to take my order. After another 20 minutes go by, I finally had to grab a bus boy and told him to bring me a waitress. I ordered, food was okay, but no one even came to check on me even once. This is a city with great food everywhere--but people relish good customer service. The worst part of the whole experience? I even encouraged management to call me by leaving my number on their receipt so I could possibly tell them about my experience. Needless to say, they didn't call and I'm on this platform sharing my story. I wouldn't advise going here if you like good service. Absolutely terrible. read more

I'm a big fan of Las Tablas but not of this location. The place smelled funky but that didn't stop me from going in. We ordered a blue moon "beer" and a Lulo juice. The server from the start messed up bringing 2 Lulo juices. When he came back with the beer ... The piece of orange was missing. The server took forever to take the order and to bring the drinks. He was too busy with a big table. He was not organized at all. He was all over the place not knowing what to do or who ordered what. The food came and we ordered the restaurant specialty ENTRAÑAS, a skirt steak that comes with potatoes, plantain and cassava (yuca) The plantain was overlooked and the yuca undercooked. Very disappointing. Each plate was $28 dollars... If you guys need a class about how to cook yuca let me know! Overall. Go to the other location!! Our server Emanuel was nice BUT was a terrible server. Although not his fault, food took well over 45min to come after we ordered. This whole time NOT once, was our waters refilled. None. Not a single glass, throughout the whole time we were there. Not once were we asked if we wanted another margarita either. It wasn't even busy. I even had to go to the bar to ask for WATER! Jesus. The food there, is has always been good. Took longer than usual that evening though. But what grinds my gears is that I had a feeling the AUTOMATIC GRATUITY would be included in our bill because of our party count. Sure enough, it was. The extreme lack of service because his tip would be provided either way is unacceptable! I don't even remember the last time I've been to a place that didn't ask us for more drinks. More so, refill our water glasses. His busser didn't do much either. To top it all off, I had to walk to the bar AGAIN to ask for to-go containers. Ughhhh. Terrible. Was at Las Tablas around 5:30pm , we were seated and so happy to be back. Love the food and was looking forward to an awesome meal. We ordered Empanadas as appetizers my friend ordered Churrasquito and my order was Pollo Al Ajillo. I ordered an Arnold Palmer it took Raquel for 15 minutes to bring it . Finally after an 20 minutes of waiting the server brings the Empanadas and her entree. I told her to start eating certain that my entree will be served shortly. I'm waiting patiently but no food for me. My dinner companion was almost done when I got up went to the back to tell someone in charge what happened. All I got is we are short staffed. I understand yet I watched other nearby tables being served and food delivered by our server Raquel. Finally she came with my Oder that I was now eating by myself. At no point did Raquel or anyone else apologize for this major fiasco. I paid $23 for a meal I did not enjoy. The point of going with a friend is to share a meal. Stopped by during Chicago Restaurant Week to try a taste of Colombian cuisine. Serving two empanadas, choice of meat with yucca, beans, rice, plantains or salad, and a choice of coconut flan or chocolate mousse. For the price of $22, there was quite a lot of food. The skirt steak was an excellent decision. Yucca was a little too hard and dry, perhaps we should have tried beans instead. read more
