Las Tablas is a lovely Colombian restaurant on the corner of Irving Park Rd & Laporte. Their dining area is very spacious, with plenty of tables open for us to dine in. We were seated right away but unfortunately that was the only thing that was fast. They're service was very spotty, and felt they could have done way better. After they sat us down we didn't get any water for at least five minutes. Our server was very friendly, but was forgetful throughout the evening. We had to ask for our silverware after we received our food, she said she was going to bring us more water and never did, and even apologized that she took long to give us our limes event bough we never asked for any, which tells me she wasn't messing up on other tables as well. And there was a long wait in between getting the check and and her finally returning to get the payment. My wife ordered their Matrimonio, which came with my all time favorite skirt steak, ajillo chicken, yuca, potatoes and fried sweet plantains. The skirt steak was very tender and seasoned perfectly. I ordered their Bandeja Paisa, which comes with a little bit more food than the Matrimonio, except instead of skirt steak, you get a Colombian style cut char broiled rib eye. It was also very tender and tasty. The dish also came with fried pork belly, chorizo, rice, beans, sweet plantains, and avocado. A very filling dish indeed. The chorizo was also tasty, and different than the Mexican chorizo I'm used to. The pork belly was chewy and not as tasty as I had hoped. Despite the tasty food, it came at a very high price. There's actually another Colombian place that serves the same dishes for a whole lot less. And with better service. I wouldn't mind returning and giving this place another try, hoping they fix their customer service issues. read more

Service sucked. Waiter brought the wrong meal and refused to come to our table when we wanted to send it back. He ignored us completely. Many times he was nearby as I waved frantically to get his attention. He never once glanced our way. I even flagged down another waitress and bus boys but none followed through in getting him to come back over. He wasted plenty of time cajoling with the bar tender and other guests. I was just about finished with my meal by the time he decided to show up and argue that my daughter's meal was what we ordered. It wasn't skirt steak. It was some mystery meat. Finally he took it back and brought what she wanted. When I got my left overs which also took forever to return, he switched the meat! Skirt steak doesn't have bones....I do not recommend this place. They turned a leisurely dinner into a frustrating irritating experience. I felt insulted and ignored. I was taking my daughter out because she has been nursing a sick cat. It took them along time to take our order and I couldn't help but notice an older lady there with a service dog and they wouldn't take care of her because of the dog so she got up and left. they don't give you anything to munch on until your food gets there so I kinda asked and see if they had any bread for the table so they gave me some little fried plantain potato chips with some sauces until the food came, which was about at least 45 minutes . The steak and side items that came with the entrees were AMAZING. My boyfriend and I went on Valentine's Day, so it was pretty busy, I almost felt cramped. It wasn't a bad atmosphere, if we had gone on a less busy night I might've enjoyed it more. There was live music, too, but the place was too loud for me to enjoy it. The waitress was barely able to take our order, though. My friends and I prepared ourselves for a buffet/seafood feast at Seafood on the Table for Sunday lunch, but it was mysteriously closed with no information on the door or website. Fortunately, Las Tablas came to the rescue down the street! It's a somewhat dark restaurant with plenty of seating (especially group tables) and would be perfect for a dinner setting. They have a guy singing and playing an instrument on the side of the restaurant. Almost all of the menu titles are in Spanish, so you have to look at the descriptions if you don't know how to read Spanish. I wish I retained more of what I learned in my high school Spanish class years ago. APPETIZER - Empanada Combo Plate (6 empanadas) ($15.00): We each ordered two empanadas, one beef and one chicken. They're Colombian empanadas and pretty tasty, especially with the three dipping sauces provided. I prefer the beef one more. ENTREES - Picada Mar y Tierra ($65.00): This is a combination of the most popular Colombian food. It might not seem like a lot of food at initial glance, but don't be fooled. It was enough to feed three hungry girls, and we still had leftovers. The dish has skirt steak (their house specialty), pork loin, chicken breast, grilled shrimp, calamari, baby octopus al ajillo, homemade chorizo, pork ribs, arepa, crunchy green plantain, sweet plantain, yuca, and potato. Nice, sunny place if you go for the happy hour, 2-6pm as the windows face south and lots of nice daylight. I was definitely way too harsh in my last review. I last came here a few years ago and it wasn't that memorable. We were in the mood for Latin food and we chose the Irving Park location. I grew up in this neighborhood so it's always nostalgic for me! Parking can be spotty especially on a Saturday night. Luckily there is a parking lot with pay to park. We made reservations and our table was ready right away. It was packed and the live music was very loud. It was too loud because we were sat literally right under the speaker. Our drinks took a while to come out. When they finally did, it was delicious. I asked for a Kiwi martini but they ran out of kiwi so I settled for mango. It was good! Chunks of mango with a good amount of alcohol. We ordered this monstrous plate(forgot the name) but it literally comes with everything! Steak, squid, shrimp, chicken, plantains-you name it! The waiter brought us the wrong order, another waiter who brought the food over to my table spilled the steak juice and grease on my husband shirt and pants. Came here for my moms birthday and made a reservation. We came in and we're told we had to wait for a table . Which is ok I headed to the bar for a drink. After waiting there didn't get attended even sitting there for almost 10 minutes. But I will say the whole dynamic of the experience was thanks to the wonderful guitar player and the charming server that served us. We tipped the guitar player to play us some songs, and also the pitchers of sangria was great for our group of 5. Food was delicious and cooked to my preference. I really wanted to enjoy Las Tablas more than I did. As soon as you step inside, you are welcomed with the sounds of live salsa music and the smell of delicious meat being cooked; both things I loved. My wife and parents also enjoyed the atmosphere, and put us all in a good mood. I was really looking forward to have a delicious steak dinner, unfortunately, the high that dinner started out with did not go higher from there, and actually took a downturn. Our friendly waiter got us water fairly quickly, and service was good at the beginning. We put in drink orders and an appetizer for the table (empanadas), and from there, we saw our waiter sparingly. My water was filled throughout dinner frequently enough, but there is clearly a staffing issue. I waited almost 30-40 minutes after finishing my meal to get my check, which is the longest I've waited. The salsa music only helped so far while I was waiting. No attitude issue at all, as everyone was great, which is good, however, definitely needed at least on more waiter/waitress that night. The empanadas I tried were both good. The chicken was tasty, and the beef was tender and flavorful. I ordered a steak and pork entrée, with the steak medium, and the rest of my table got chicken dishes, with my wife a side of steak that she ordered well done. Considering this is a steakhouse, I expected a juicy, tender, melt-in-your-mouth steak full of Latin flavor. What I got missed this mark. The steak was well the medium temperature I had asked for, with no sign of any pink, tender meat when I cut into it. In fact, the steak my wife got seemed closer to medium than mine, though, hers was still closer to medium well. The sauces served on the side were a must to combat the dryness of the bite. The flavor itself, though good, was over seasoned; again, the sauce here helping cut down some of the salt. The pork itself was overcooked and dry as well. My wife's chicken was tender and juicy, miles better than the steak, and my parents enjoyed their meals as well. It seems the chicken should have been my go-to meal. The drinks were decent, with the strawberry mojito being particularly good and refreshing. Overall, my parents and wife enjoyed the meal, but I left disappointed. Considering how much my parents enjoyed it, we may be going back, and maybe the next time, it will be better as it could have been an off night. No replenishment of sauces. They did not describe what type of empanada was what. They did not check on our table we constantly had to ask for service. For $10 you get their Enseña plate which is a 8oz skirt steak, rice, beans and a salad!!!!!!!!!!! This is ridiculous, the steak was juicy and flavorful! At this point you are probably wondering why I would rate this place 3 stars after describing this amazing lunch special. Well when I received my food I found a piece of plastic in my beans. To preface, my rating has absolutely nothing to do with the food. I've been to Las Tablas multiple times over the past year and I enjoy the food every time. In fact, it's some of my favorite Colombian food in Chicago. However... the wait time is absurd. Mind you, I've only ever visited as a table for 2. You walk in and get seated very quickly, but it takes about 20 minutes to get a waiter over to take your food/drinks order and another 30 to get your food. Throughout this, rarely does a waiter come over to check up on the table. This is the same for getting the check. An outing that is supposed to take 30 to an hour of my time is stretched to nearly two hours, majority of which is spent waiting. Again, the food is great, hence my multiple visits, but I'm beginning to question if the wait is worth it. The restaurant has never been full when I attend (usually having a max of 3-4 tables seated) and yet this issue still remains. I really hope this problem is resolved, but in the meantime I wouldn't recommend this restaurant if you have a schedule to uphold or don't especially like having to wave your server down for any sort of attentiveness. read more

I had the "Entraña" (columbian steak) which was pretty great. The fried banana/root was actually very good and the salsas we good (except maybe not spicy enough... for me at least). The staff was friendly and attentive (but not very pushy, which I always like).
