The Restaurant was festively decorated, & seemed clean from my vantage point at the Hostess Stand. The problem was the Seasoning, or lack thereof. I was so sad. I'm searching for my next new favorite authentic Mexican Restaurant (NOT Tex Mex). I'm still in the hunt. I may be a Gringa, but for 30 years I was married into a Hispanic family. I need SPICE! Not necessarily heat... although some of that is appreciated. Sadly, the food here seriously lacks seasoning. Lucky me, I had a container of Tony Cacherie's Creole Seasoning in my Car, & that's what kinda saved the meal for me. That's sad. I really wanted to love this spot & make it my "usual" place. THAT didn't work out.. Do gave to say that the employees I encountered are very nice, and perhaps the food is better seasoned when you have some of the Salsa to add to it.

The ambiance is cozy, not too bright, but just the right amount of light. I travel about an hour just to eat here. If that doesn't tell you how much I love this restaurant, I don't know what will. My favorite dish is the Matamoros plate but I can barely finish it because I usually fill up on my other favorite, which is the chips and salsa.

And they offer both options every day/all day, which is great. She'll come back with her sister to enjoy it again. I had two breakfast tacos: one with egg, sausage and cheese and the other with migas. I really loved the migas. While the first taco was unremarkable, the migas was great. It was perfect, in fact. And it really celebrates their home made corn and flour tortillas. The only thing I didn't like was the salsa. It tasted like canned tomatoes and it was a wee bit salty and not very spicy. I really liked the migas, though. It was made with fresh jalapeño and had just the right amount of heat without needing any salsa. So I think this is one of those places that does some things very well... enough to build up a solid base of regulars, even though some of their other offerings were disappointing, like improperly reheated enchiladas. But if you know what to order, you can really enjoy this place. Oddly enough, they have chorizo on the menu, but don't list it among the available proteins on the breakfast taco menu, which I personally find very strange. Chorizo and egg is such an iconic breakfast taco offering. I'll bet they'd do it justice.

This visit didn't turn out so great. There were a few highlights but overall it fell below the bar in several ways. The chips here are different, light, crispy but a little delicate. They are good, and the salsa is tasty, a little on the hot side. I ordered the Queso Loco for the first time and it turned out good. Queso with chicken, rice and pico. It could be a meal on its own. Kinda like a casserole. Really enjoyed it. For dinner I got the Steak Cozumel which honestly was the worst steak I've had at a restaurant. I NEVER use condiments on the table but had to request the pepper shaker and use that and salt to give this thing some flavor. It had some odd flavors going on in different sections of the meat. It came with rice/beans and an enchilada choice, I got chicken. It was good. The service was ok, they seem to be in the same boat as every one else with the lack of staff. I tend to measure service by whether I need to wait for refills. It was not the best but not the worst. Overall, a disappointing experience this time but I'm not checking it off the rotation yet. Usually it's much better.

The wait staff is friendly and checks up on us regularly, They have a chalk board with specials. A nice bar - Today their specials included a $5 margarita. But I also like their generous Mexican martini (brought out in a proper shaker) and their Fridarita - an ode to Ms. Kahlo featuring hibiscus (jamaica) and decorated with a flower. It has to be the most interesting margarita I've ever encountered. And it tastes great. My wife had the menudo and a crispy chicken taco. She enjoyed both. And the taco was larger than most. I came back to my favorite here, the shrimp relleno - a blister, peeled poblano pepper (not battered or fried) filled with shrimp and ranchero sauce and served with white rice and lovely, grilled vegetables (zucchini, yellow squash, mushrooms, etc.). The whole dish works so well together you could mix it all up and it would still be devine. So... we keep coming back.

I won't cross it off the list of restaurants I will go to but it has fallen off the high pedestal I used to have it on. Somewhere along the line a new management took over. The menu is the same, but the quality has dropped a little. I usually can't stop raving about my chimichanga with fajita beef, but the meat is...different, like maybe not the same cut, a little less tender and more stringy. It was still good, the taste was good, cheesy and fried to a crisp crunchy goodness, but, just not what it used to be. Wifeh mentioned her Mexican Martini was not the best, but honestly, that depends on which bartender makes them and can vary. I got a mango margarita which I liked, she didn't. She also tried a banana margarita, don't ask me why, she said banana sounded good at the time. While the mango was made with a fruit puree, the banana was made with a liqueur and it was basically like drinking rubbing alcohol. All burn, no flavor. The waitress removed it from the bill at least as we only tried a few sips of that. The kids had no complaints on their chicken fajita tacos and quesadillas. The service was good, the staff didn't have a united appearance though. At one point a teen in a regular tshirt asked us something and it took a moment to realize she wanted to refill our drinks and worked there. Overall, what used to be a go to place we went to when family visits had turned into a less than regular place.
