I have gotten ube soft serve here twice. Each was divine. Best soft serve!!! I recently tried their bistek breakfast sandwich. It was incredibly flavorful and juicy. The pan de sal was light and buttery. But still not disgustingly heavy! Still had plenty of appetite for second lunch (!) and ube soft serve dessert. My friends got the spam sandwich and chorizo sandwich. We liked the spam a lot but thought the chorizo could've used more (or any) vegetables. Calamansi juice from home also here. After months of saying I'd get around to coming here, I finally did, and I wasnt disappointed. We got the Cajun spuds and bistek sandwich. I was expecting the spuds to be tater tots, but they weren't. I mean they were, but they were a new spin on tater tots. They were little discs of friend potato happiness (perfect for dipping) instead of cylinders. The sandwiches were juicy, packed with beef and flavor, and mine kept me full the entire day. Order and pickup were easy. The outdoor seating is great on a nice day but less than ideal when the weather turns. A covered space to wait for food when it's raining would be nice. Coming from the inventive minds behind of Kuya Ja's Lechon Belly in Rockville, MD, Lapu Lapu is a sandwich shop offering counter service (no indoor seating), perfect for a quick bite on the go. I had the spam, egg, and cheese and tater tots with house dipping sauce (not pictured). The pandesal (Filipino yeast roll) is delicious, tender and slightly sweet. They're locally made by Gwenie's Pastries in Rockville, MD. The combination of spam, egg, and cheese is straightforward and satisfying. The tater tots are perfectly crisp and piping hot (and at $4 for a large serving, it's a deal!). Their homemade sauce is an excellent accompaniment. The Bistek which has ribeye, a fried egg, pickled onion, white American cheese sauce, lettuce, and garlic adobo mayo was simply perfection. It was one of the most expensive carryout sandwiches I've ever had, but worth every penny. There wasn't much ribeye and it wasn't very hearty. The ribeye was tender. The Pan De Sal Bun came out warm and toasty. The pickled onion gave it some crunch. For $14, you would expect a side for fast casual food. There were three teens who saw the menu and commented about the $14 with astonishment and left. They do serve tater tots for $4 as a snack. I didn't see that on the menu or I may have purchased them. I loved the sandwich a lot that I would splurge every now and then. I purchased the Four Seasons Juice and really enjoyed it. My friend got the Spam and said it was good, but nothing special as it could be replicated at home if she had their sauce. It took longer than I expected too. There were people that came after me and got their food first. Perhaps it depends on what is ordered. There are only a few patio seating available. I thought there was indoor seating, but apparently they only do carryout. Not ideal as most patrons probably want to eat the food while it's hot. It would be miserable to eat outside if it's too hot, cold, or raining. My friend said her bun was soggy by the time I brought it back to the office. What a great way to start a day. This is a sister restaurant to Kuya Ja's Lechon Belly. This a carry-out only with few outside tables right out front. The staff was so friendly. I couldn't decide what to get but finally decided on the Bistek sandwich, spuds, and ube soft served. This place is made to order so it will take about 10-15 minute. That's ok... I ate my amazing ube soft served while I waited. Yes, dessert before the meal. I took the sandwich and spuds home. They both traveled well for the 10 minutes home. The sandwich was so good!!!!! A little tip- keep it in the wrapper that it came in and just peel back as you eat - less messy. Everything about this sandwich was just a perfect marriage. Next the spuds- perfectly fried. Crispy. I decided to take my lunch break to try Lapu Lapu and I definitely was not disappointed. I got the bistek while my friend got the chorizo. The bistek took a little longer than the chorizo but it was worth the wait as sandwiches are made to order (10-15 minutes, before the rush). The bistek has great flavors and I love the buns. I suggest keeping the sandwich in its wrapper as the juices were dripping everywhere. I can't wait to try everything else on the menu. There is only an outdoor patio with 6 tables. This place is in Kentlands and it only has outdoor seating. They take your order and then you wait for your order and you can sit right in front. I would see this as a good spot for Spring and Summer weathers, but colder or wet weather, not a great choice to come by. I like the Ube soft serve, which is unique in the area. It is strong with the Ube flavor, which is well worth the money. I didnt try their sandwiches though which I heard was good, but maybe another time. They are in a quieter area farther away from the cars and the road so you are not interrupted all the time when talking to another person. There is plenty of parking around because it is Kentlands. I would say that it provides some good unique options to eat. No need to care about a server/tipping and if the weather permits, a good picnic experience. I would say it is worth a try. read more

I am always happy to see a Filipino business doing well. This new Kentlands addition deserves a recommendation. This place was hopping on a Sunday morning with the few outdoor seats being completely filled and a line of customers waiting to order. Lapu-Lapu serves sandwiches with a delicious Philippine flair. The bread or pan de sal is made in house and filled with traditional Filipino dishes like bistek (lemon, soy beef) with fried egg, paksiw na lechon (soy and vinegar braised pork) and fried egg, corned beef and fried egg - you get the idea. They also have the more American classics like sausage, egg and cheese; bacon egg and cheese and so on. The one dessert, though a bit pricey for $6, is an ube flavored soft serve on that brings me sweet memories of home. If you haven't had it, this is a good introduction to Filipino food. read more

Gotta speak loud for the cashier (kitchen and applicances are loud) and wait time is long, so keep that in mind. Prices are a bit expensive but it's really worth trying have you have not already. The russian slaw tied it all together--without it, the sandwich would've been too heavy for me. I did try a bite of the Sausage, Egg, and Cheese--a solid choice as well. Absolutely amazing Filipino breakfast spot! Their breakfast sandwiches are made on homemade pan de Sal Bun, so soft and perfect texture where it's not too 'bready'. I got the Spam and Chorizo Sandwich. The scrambled eggs was so fluffy, I loved the arugula pairing with the spam, it was a nice balance between the two. You get that nice little salty from the spam, smoked Gouda cheese, fluffy egg texture and lapu lapu sauce, mouthwatering goodness. The chorizo sandwich, which is a Filipino sausage. Fabulous breakfast sandwiches!! I had the Bistek (thin sliced soy ribeye and a fried egg) and the Paksiw (braised pork and fried egg). Both were bold and flavorful. The freshly baked buns really bring it all together. The tater tots are just OK IMO, but they're a nice accompaniment to the sandwiches. Staff is friendly and engaging. They enthusiastically answered all of my questions and clued me into their loyalty program. The whole place as a hip, laid-back vibe. The patio seating is great on cool spring mornings, but not sure how it would play on blazing July and August afternoons. I ordered the bistek sandwich, this sandwich was just the right thing for breakfast fluffy bread with shredded ribeye marinated in a sweet sauce reminds me a lot like bulgogi in Korean dishes it had pickled onions the sauce wasn't over power it added to the sandwich nicely and the bread kept everything soaked up with flavor. I ordered online and my husband picked them up. It was done in less than 15 minutes because my husband said it was already there before estimated pick up time. I had the paksiw (sweet soy vinegar braised pork) and my husband got the spam. I thought the paksiw was a little too sweet for my taste but I do love the fried egg. Service was friendly. It's a cute little place, no inside seating, but there are some tables outside. The day we were there it was too cold to sit outside, and their patio heaters did not have propane tanks in them. So we ate in the car. Delicious, fresh, warm, toasty bun, if you're not celebrating it, you want to be. I got the best deck. My friends got bacon, egg and cheese and sausage, egg and cheese. Everyone was raving about their sandwiches. We were also lucky enough to come on a day when they were selling chicken Olympia. Oh my gosh. If you don't get these when you're there, if they have them shame on you! So, you should go and eat here if you haven't already. If you have, you should go back like I am going to. If it's really cold or pouring rain, you should still go and eat in your car. No matter how did your car, the food will make you forgot all about it at least for the few minutes it takes you to scarf it down. Lapu Lapu is a hidden gem in the middle of Kentland Squares. I specifically came for the ube soft serve, but decided to try the burgers and spuds too. I got the Bistek, Chorizo, and Paksiw. The Bistek was alright, but not my favorite. A little too salty for my taste, but I do love the pickled onions 3/5. The Chorizo is the best, with the right amount of sweet and salty and the fried egg balanced it out 5/5. Paksiw was also sweet and salty with good umami, but a bit messy to eat 4/5. The cajun spuds were SO GOOD. Crunchy and comes with a dipping sauce 5/5. I like the ube ice cream as well, but a bit on the sweeter side 4/5. Breakfast sandwiches are an undersung hero of the food world, mostly because it's hard to sing when I'm stuffing them in my mouth. (I could take ventriloquism classes, I suppose, but then I'd have to meet people interested in ventriloquism.) There's something that's very comforting about the flavors and textures of scrambled/fried eggs in sandwich form, and Lapu Lapu's versions add the additional pillowy softness of fresh, poofy Pan de Sal buns to really amp up that joyful "biting into a cloud, except it's not just a bunch of visible water vapor" vibe. After months of being a pop up at sister restaurant Kuya Ja's, Lapu Lapu now has its own brick and mortar spot in the Kentlands. Note: their online ordering doesn't have the complete menu, so if you want some tater tots or a meatless/Impossible sando, those are available, just not online. (Lesson learned!) I got two sizeable sandwiches: 1) the Bistek, which has super finely sliced ribeye, a fried egg, pickled onions, white American cheese, lettuce, and garlic adobo mayo; and 2) the corned beef, which has a grill-crusted patty of corned beef in burger/disc-ish form, plus delightfully soft scrambled eggs, Swiss cheese, potato chips (!), and Russian slaw. Both were fantastic, in no small part due to that buoyant, delicious bread as a base. The meats were very well seasoned, and the patty-style corned beef had a bit of a crispy crust that provided a really nice textural contrast (the potato chips in the bistek did the same there). It'd be hard to pick between the two, but I'd probably slightly lean towards the corned beef just because a fluffy bunch of scrambled eggs is pretty unbeatable. Well worth checking out for breakfast or lunch (they're open early, 7-3 Wed - Sun), and I'm looking forward to trying those tots (and frankly, everything else) in the near future! read more
