The soup dumplings are a MUST-order, and this time we ordered a few different things to share. Highly recommend the beef tomato egg rice- so tender and so well-cooked, the fried oysters were delicately fried and savory and fresh, and the enoki tofu cucumber salad was delightful and well-balanced, pairs really well wit the fried oysters. The staff are always extremely fast and responsive despite all the busyness.

The staff was also outstanding, coming to clarify my order with me and checking for any allergies. The girls at the front check in desk were also very friendly and helped me sign up for the wait list. HOWEVER, in the midst of my dinner I witnessed something very disturbing. While I was eating my dinner, I heard some yelling going on and noticed a scene in front of me. The manager/owner was loudly berating his staff members in the dining area and threw his phone at the front desk counter. I think that is extremely unprofessional to do in front of staff and customers. If you have to have a serious conversation with your staff you should not be doing that in front of dining customers. That left a bad impression in me and I don't think I'll be coming back.

While the food was still pretty good, my wife, son and I had ordered: - The soup dumplings - Pork and spicy pork regular dumplings - Some of the cooked buns - Cucumbers Our friends had ordered something similar and they seemed to enjoy it as well. One thing that I was not really thrilled about is the lack of plates at the establishment. We did ask for some extra containers since they didn't have plates, but you can really get a feel that this place has shifted the experience from being dine-in to more takeout-based. All of the containers and plates are these paper plates that do tend to leak with enough time. As the bok choy we ordered had a soy-based sauce it was prepared with and that started leaking out of the paper container. All in all, still a good dumpling spot and the service was okay. The staff was friendly, but really the only thing they're doing is bringing you the food to the table. They don't check on you and you order from a kiosk now. So the overall dining experience in my opinion has gone down overall. If you're ordering takeout, I'm sure none of this applies will your food will be good, but just the dine-in experience is not what it used to be.

I felt so at home eating the food I had back in my college days with my original order. I will say that the restaurant did downsize, however I'm just happy that they're still there to begin with, just in case I haven't elaborated. The decor did get a nice lift and more modern than the back of the day set up. I think it's cute. I believe the young lady that's been there for years may have been the owner the whole time and I was just too oblivious to actually pay attention. The server herself... I felt bad that she couldn't really understand me as my order was incorrect on what I was missing in my soup. My usual from back in the day was Beef and Beef Tendon Noodle Soup, and I would always ask for tripe with mixed beef intestines... so I was missing the intestines but genuinely didn't really think of it as a big deal since I just wanted to taste the food again. Overall, soup, 15/10. The XLB's are just goodness and warms my soul and lord have mercy how much I have missed these little puppies. I need to let everyone know that there is no good XLB's in the San Jose or East Bay Area of California. Complete disappointment. But that's just my opinion. Shanghai Noodle House's XLB's 20/10

We came on a Sunday around 1pm and about half the tables were occupied so there was no wait. First thing I noticed is the inside is all different, maybe newer looking. They must have changed ownership from when I last came. The food wasn't authentic and wasn't good. We ordered soup dumplings, sweet soy milk, savory soy milk, and pan fried dumplings. Soup dumplings- the good thing is here they give you 8 pieces (vs 6 pieces in other NJ places). The skin is too thin. It was difficult to pick up with a chopstick or spoon and not 1 piece stayed intact while picking it up. All of the soup leaked out before it even reached my plate. The texture of the skin was "slippery" vs the bouncy kind I usually see with soup dumplings. My husband said he bit into a small piece of bone which is weird. Sweet soy milk- it wasn't a smooth drink. There were lots of soy grits Savory soy milk- tasted very watered down. Didn't have much soy milk flavor Pan fried dumplings- the portion was generous with 6 huge pan fried dumplings. These are the largest I've seen anywhere. They look more like buns than dumplings!! It was ok but overall it didn't taste like a pan fried dumpling. The owners seem really nice and friendly, chatting with some of the customers. Their service was good too. It's just the food isn't authentically Shanghainese.

Hands down the main reason why I keep coming back here a lot. But in all seriousness, we also enjoy their soup dumplings or as they call it, "juicy buns" and shumai with a side of steamed bokchoy. They have such a unique take with dim sums/dumplings that I can honestly appreciate. I also love love love their chili oil that is readilg available on the table. During a recent lunch outing with my son, we sampled a variety of dishes including pork soup dumplings, wine chicken (served at room temperature), spicy beef noodle soup, and pan-fried chive buns. The standout dish of the day was definitely the spicy beef noodle soup, which delivered bold flavors and just the right amount of spice to tantalize the taste buds. The pork soup dumplings and pan-fried chive buns were also enjoyable, meeting our expectations in terms of taste and quality. In terms of service, we found the staff to be attentive and accommodating, ensuring that our needs were promptly met throughout the meal. We ordered the Pickled Pepper Frog with Chicken, Stir Fry Chicken Giblets and Throat and Stew Tofu with Crab Roe. The overall vibe? Pure happiness. The Food Breakdown: Pickled Pepper Frog with Chicken An absolute genius pairing! The bullfrog and chicken are incredibly tender with zero gamey taste. Creatively, it's a 10/10. My only tiny critique is that it leans a bit salty, but it's perfect when paired with white rice. The more you eat, the more addictive it gets! Stew Tofu with Crab Roe You have to get a scoop of this. The golden crab roe sauce perfectly coats the silken tofu. It's savory, sweet, and velvety, which beautifully cuts through the heat of the other spicy dishes. I could honestly down three bowls of rice just mixing it with this sauce. Plus, the portion size is huge and super affordable.

Their website promised pickup in 20 minutes. I left the The Heldrich Hotel and made the ten minute walk, only to find my order already being bagged. Efficiency like that gives a person hope. Hope, as it turns out, is fragile. Back in the room, I opened the containers immediately. Spicy beef noodles with hand pulled noodles in a beef and pork broth, along with steamed pork soup dumplings that had been spoken of with reverence online. The dumplings were cold. Not warm, not cooling. Cold, like they had been waiting longer than I had. They had fused together into a single tragic mass. When I tried to separate them, the dough tore open and the soup filling spilled out into the container, abandoning its purpose. How this happened during a ten minute walk is a mystery. The more likely answer is that it did not. The noodles were at least hot. The flavor was fine. Not offensive, not memorable, just present. You eat it, and it disappears from your mind almost immediately. This is a place people seem to love, which makes the experience feel like a clerical error in the matrix. Perhaps it was an off night. Perhaps I caught them at the exact wrong moment, but on this particular evening, dinner felt less like a meal and more like a misunderstanding.

The scallions pancakes are perfect, and between the honey lemonade and scallion pancakes I was ready to come back. Our eyes were sparkling and we were ready for the next round. When our chicken and broccoli finally arrived, after the rice, I was so confused. Something tasted off, and I found myself wondering if it was the serving spoon (used it to eat bc I couldn't wait to ask) soon I discovered it was a fishy smell/taste and was definitely coming from the meal. My husband, finding the same, asked what was in the chicken and broccoli. Our waitress informed us they've heard this before and it's not fish, but mushroom, giving it some flavor which I couldn't hear as she was practically whispering at this point. We replaced it with an order of orange chicken, which was good, but that fish taste ruined the meal for us, honestly. Anyway, not sure if we'll ever be back, but decided to warn others. I googled it, and there's no recipe online but either way, we shouldn't be smelling and tasting rotten fish when having chicken and broccoli. The place looks nice, is it an old gas station?
