Quality- the lemon shrimp was crispy and the sauce was flavorful with sweetness and the shrimp was a bit overcooked though. It was very dry but since the sauce was there it offset the dryness. This is the WORST establishment in Naperville. The manager is horrible, greedy, and disgusting. For context, my family and I used to come to this restaurant's lunch special every other week. One night, the manager berated and insulted my father for not tipping her enough. He ended up paying her more in cash as if 20% was not enough. This was years ago and we ended up not coming back again. My grandma loved the food here, though, and I decided after years of not showing up, that perhaps management had changed. I was extremely wrong. During lunch, we were not serviced at all. No one paid attention to if we needed anything. They essentially took the order, delivered it via their robot, and were out of sight for the remainder of the meal. I brushed it off as this wasn't a problem for us, and it was only two of us. When we were done with the meal, again the staff was nowhere in sight. I packed up the leftovers myself, and after waiting around for 10 minutes, had to go up to the staff for them to charge my card. Unfortunately for me, the same manager takes my bill. She looks at me and directly asks me why I did not tip her higher. Funny that she's paying attention now. She takes a few steps back and stands in front of the table implying that I need to update my tip amount. Lol. I did not. I did not respond to her. I was not going to explain myself, nor let someone bully and force me to tip higher than the initial amount. She then proceeds to scream at me and tell me, verbatim, "that I am from the US" and that I need to tip better, and to take carry out next time. I said "okay," and proceeded to head out of the restaurant. She then took the card holder and slammed it in front of the register, to create more drama. Lol. I know who I am. I am a generous tipper (20% minimum) and have worked in the food industry myself. But I will not let someone bully me into giving more than what is already written. Business must be hard as the restaurant was barren and had no customers. Business must be harder when you are miserable and treat your customers like garbage, ensuring they never return again. This is my favorite lunch option during the work week. The food is good and comes out fast if you're in a time crunch. My usual dish is the dry chili chicken lunch special (with egg drop soup, crab Rangoon and white rice). Dry chili chicken is one of the best dishes on the menu, but they also offer other delicious options such as fillet of fish in black bean sauce, lamb kumin and twice cooked pork. Ordered Door Dash for lunch. Food was ready fast and arrived hot but that was about the best of it. Ordered Sesame chicken lunch special with fried rice and a crab rangoon as the sides. The fried rice was just white rice with soy sauce, no veggies, not fried, and had 2 small bits of egg. The sesame chicken was OK but the sauce got too sweet quickly and was a very thick consistency, like a thick sweet and sour sauce without the sour. I've been here a handful of times, usually with my in-laws since Lao Sze Chuan is a family favorite! The freshness and quality of the food is always excellent and has been consistent, whether it's here (Aurora) or at other locations I've tried (Evanston, and downtown on Michigan Ave). I'm sure folks have their favorite locations. When with my in-laws, I leave the ordering up to them, and the owner of the restaurant usually stops by to chat and make any recommendations for dishes depending on what we're in the mood for. Lucky for me, I just get to sit back and relax. Plus, they have a bar here too. Most recently, we came here for dinner (party of 4) and this is what we had, family-style: Sweet and Sour Fish Filet Ong Choy with Garlic Kung Pao Chicken Soup with Beef, Egg Whites, and Minced Veggies (not sure of the name) Tendon Dish with Veggies (also not sure of the name) Japanese Tofu with Salted Egg Yolk Cold Noodles Mushroom Casserole Dish (served on top of a little cooker, unsure of name) I feel a little useless without being able to provide the names of the dishes, and I don't have pics of all of them BUT let it be known on Yelp that you will get delicious, freshly wok-fried food that comes hot out of the kitchen here. Grade: 3.5 stars I came with a group of 5 people on a Saturday night around 5:30 or 6:00 PM. The restaurant was fairly empty so we got our choice of whatever kind of seats we wanted. Definitely a good dish to grab. -SEAFOOD COMBINATION WITH TOFU IN CASSEROLE: Nice combination of various seafoods, veggies and tofu. Sauce was great and went well with rice. -SCALLION PANCAKE: I love scallion pancakes so was excited to try but these were a bit disappointing. There was a lot of oil but it was not crispy enough, additional the flavor was not all there. -DAN DAN NOODLES: Even as a "mild spicy" option the peppercorn did have a bit of a kick. The sauce was nice but it was a bit more oily. The Aurora location, and the OG location in China town, are the only 'Lao Sze Chaun' branded locations to visit; everything else is formerly owned/a franchise of owner Tony's previously vast empire-don't waste your time on the Downers Grove location; it's just not the same! I have been visiting Lao Sze Chuans for many years, from Connecticut to California. While all of them are similar, there's enough variation that it's always a surprise to try a new one. This spacious suburban location offers a bunch of vegan-friendly dishes. The dan dan noodles can be made without meat ($9). It tasted all right, albeit oily. The dry bean curd with spicy sauce ($9) was not what I was expecting. Normally it's dried tofu in a light sauce; here it was chewy and oily tofu and oily. The scallion pancake ($9) tasted fine. You can't go wrong. The Chinese broccoli ($15) was nicely done and fresh. We also enjoyed the peapod leaves ($15) which featured an ample amount of Szechuan peppercorn for that tongue-numbing awesomeness. The chef's special dry chili bean curd ($16) isn't on the menu, but they'll make it on request. It was fine but not as good as at other Lao Sze Chuans I've been to. Came to visit Lao Sze Chuan again since my previous visit was quite good. The Lao Sze Chuan in downtown Chicago features handmade xiaolongbao (soup dumplings), so we decided to ask the staff here whether they also did the same. They confidently answered yes, and so we made the (unwise) decision to order their 8-piece xiaolongbao off the menu. What a disappointment...they are clearly NOT handmade - how else would the dough wrapper folds (which are curiously in the meat filling as well) be so perfectly symmetrical?? They taste and look just like the Wei Chuan frozen ones that you can get at any supermarket and when we asked the staff about it, they still denied and pretended they had no idea what we were talking about. I've Yelped the Lao Sze Chuan in Downer's Grove, and it was fab. This place has a bunch more "curb appeal", and is brighter and more inviting inside. This is not a neighborhood "Chop suey Joint". This is hard-core "Chinese" Chinese Food. Everything here was totally on point. TRUST them when they say "spicy", believe me. My notes say "Noodles, Dry chili Chicken, Szechuan Lamb and Woodear Mushroom Cheng Du Style--all fab! And it was. The only pissoff here is option anxiety. Everything on the menu looks good. Every plate cruising past the table to another diner looked great. I think it would be about 2 months eating there every day to try everything on the menu, and THAT ain't going to happen anytime soon. Maybe next time I will tell the waitron to bring whatever they think is best on the menu, and make sure it's "real Chinese"... A little touch of culinary roulette never hurt anyone! read more
