Cactus flower that only blooms for 2 days

Just missed the sunrise. This is not an easy hike gradual hike or maybe I'm not in the best of shape. It is beautiful and lots of wind the day we went. Almost to the point I felt like my phone would fly out of my hand.

Woke up at 4:45am and drove all the way from the West Side to Kailua to catch the sunrise. Bring flashlights! Preferably head flashlights so you can use the rope while having your hands free. Made it in time with to sit down and relax and watch the sun rise. One of the best ways to enjoy this hike, lots of people so choose your time to do this trail wisely. Incline all the way up, feel your legs burn! Every view is a great one! You don't need to climb all the way to the pillbox unless if for a cool photo. We found a little spot just for ourselves to enjoy and it was nice and peaceful without a lot of people.

Amazing and fairly easy hike! Though make sure to wear hiking shoes that have grip as the first stretch of the hike and some parts of the latter half is very inclined and can be slippery. Parking can be tricky if you don't get there early so plan ahead and go in the morning (you can catch the sunrise and won't have to deal with the afternoon heat). Your best bet is you park on one of the local streets (I parked on Kaelepulu Dr and was fine). The view to the top is worth it! Once up there You can see the whole stretch of Lanikai and Kailua beach, the Mokes as well as the windward side of Oahu with all the beautiful mountains. You can sit and rest on the pillboxes while you savor the view, or even explore the inside of the pillboxes and check out the graffiti! Highly recommend this hike if you're having trouble deciding where to hike, since there are many options on the island. Perfect for beginner-intermediate hikers!

Beautiful, fun, and a little challenging... We hiked Pillbox after a morning rain. Not our smartest idea, but still super fun. There were a few areas that are a little dicey even without the rain. There's really nothing to hold on to at the steep areas, and some of the sections are quite narrow and steep. The view from the top is so pretty and worth the trek.

This hike is located above Lanikai Beach in Kailua. You can access the trailhead near MidPac Country Club. There is no parking along that section of road but if you go further down below on the next block you can park along the street. I loved the views from the trail. You can see the ocean on one side of the ridge and the mountains on the other. On a clear day you can also see all the way to the Mokes. Remember to wear good close toe hiking shoes and bring water. The trail is not very long but it can be extremely hot on a sunny day since there's no shade. Also, it is steep and rocky so I don't recommend it for everyone.

Very god beginner hike. Theres a section of rocks that are kind of hard to navigate because there's no clear path to take but besides that great hike, nice view, not too overcrowded. Parking is pretty difficult though due to it being right next to the beach that also has no parking.

nice short hike with a beautiful view, however it can get very hot, best for sunrise hike or early morning or late afternoon

Great hike! It's short but steep! It did rain on us making the ground very slippery! Definitely wear appropriate shoes! No flat bottoms! Or you will end up flat on your bottom;) Great views! The second building isn't much further past the first one and I recommend hitting that one too! I noticed so many turn around after the first one? I didn't understand why? You can literally see it. Maybe bring a rain poncho? We got caught in the rain with no pina coladas!? We were soaked! Didn't ruin the experience but maybe this review will help someone plan ahead.

breathtaking views honestly prolly the best imo i was lichrally on all fours because it gets that steep but i like the challenge hahah do at your own risk but sometimes the trail is difficult to locate so you gotta go with your gut or follow others. high elevation for sure -- intermediate hike :D

We did the Pillbox Hike in Oahu with our 4 and 7 year-old, and they crushed it! On this particular day we saw -zero children-throughout our hike, so I was wondering how they would do. Honestly, I was ready to call it a day after the first pillbox, but they were all in and wanted to keep going. It's definitely a challenging hike, steep in parts and can be a bit slippery but totally doable if you take your time and know your limits. The bunker was cool to climb down and it was probably the kids' favorite part. The views at the top are absolutely worth it. They are stunning. Highly recommend it if you're up for a bit of a climb and want those classic Oahu views.

Lanikai Pillbox hike is located in Kailua. The best time to go is probably for sunrise, but if not then early morning time is great - you beat the heat and it isn't too bad finding parking. You can park at Lanikai Park after 6AM on most days, but they are very strict with parking in the area so read all signs carefully! You may have to park closer to Kailua beach park too, just depending on where you can find legal parking. When walking to the start of the trail head, you will have to walk through a private road that usually has security telling you where you can and can't walk. This is a high-foot traffic trail with mostly tourists and some locals. This hike is kid friendly, but I would not recommend doing after rainy weather because of how muddy it can get. When weather conditions are good, even then some parts of the trail are dusty so it's easy to slip. At the beginning of the trail, there is a little bit of a steep incline but there is a rope to hold onto and many sturdy tree trunks to grab. Throughout the rest of the hike, it is a steady incline with mostly rocks and dirt for terrain. The hike itself is about a mile, and the time can vary anywhere from an hour or two (round trip). Once you're at the top (first pillbox) you can climb on top or explore inside for some pics. The walk to the second pillbox is just a couple of minutes away and the view just gets better! Overall, it's a beautiful hike and great for families and just cruising for a nice sunrise view. It's definitely a spot to visit for everyone. Don't forget to wear good footwear, bring water and don't leave any trash around!

Lanikai Pillbox Hike is an absolute gem! The trail itself offers the perfect mix of challenge and breathtaking views. The steep climb in the beginning is definitely worth it once you reach the top, where you're rewarded with stunning panoramic views of the ocean and the Mokulua Islands. What made this hike even more enjoyable was the welcoming and friendly vibe from the other hikers along the way. Everyone was in high spirits, which added to the overall experience. One tip: go early to beat the heat and the crowds, but either way, the hike is worth every step. Whether you're a local or a visitor, this hike is a must-do for anyone looking to soak in some of Hawaii's most beautiful scenery. Definitely adding this to my list of favorites! For real know your limits! This trail may be short but it is not easy! It is all in the SUN and straight up! It is slippery, rocky. Be sure to wear good shoes, Make sure to bring water, and a hat. This trail gets crowded so be patient and take your time as you have to take turns walking around each other. The views are amazing , I wish I could have gone early in the day, and I may do it again just for the sunrise .

Lanikai Pillbox Hike Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Lanikai Pillbox Hike

Is it ok to hike there this week with the heavy rains? My friend who's visiting wants to hike there but I'm not sure if it would be safe to do. Thanks.

I would not recommend it. It's all dirt and rocks without and rails on the side so it may get slippery and muddy

What is the best time to start the hike for the sunrise?

~5-6AM, depending on how fast you go!

Can you do this hike in flip flops or are sneakers a must?

I definitely do not recommend hiking on flip flops.

How long does it take to go up and down?

About an hour round trip if you go at a leisurely pace and stop at the top for pictures

Is this hike good for a 6 and 13yr old?

It's perfectly fine. There are some steep areas on the hike, but even in those areas there are ropes. The only time where this hike may be difficult is right after a heavy rain due to the mud. The paths are not paved. I would suggest bringing water… Read more

If you park at Kailua beach park lot, where do you go to the trail head?

It's about a 20 min walk by the private golf course entrance. Look up the entrance to the golf course and make a left up the hill into the entrance.

Is it open right now?

Trail closed as of 7-21-2018, we just got turned away by a security guard...closed for repairs since June for at least 3 months.

Is it open today?

This scenic and beautiful hiking trail is open to the public every day!

Is the pillbox Hike currently closed?

It's closed, fenced off and undergoing geotechnical and structural work. Closed the last week of June for an estimated period of 3 months.

Is this hike free or does it cost?

FREE!!

Hey everyone who's been to this hike where is the best place to park?

A lot of places are residential and you might be towed on the street. Easiest thing to do is to park at Kailua beach park and walk over. There is a lot on each side of the canal. Alternatively there's a the long way to do the hike from the opposite… Read more

Who should do it: most people can make the 1st peak. Trail from 1st to 2nd becomes noticeably narrower but it's short and about the same level of difficulty as trail up the 1st peak. 2nd to 3rd peak was where the challenge is - lots of vertical rock climbing, path is narrow, and ropes aren't all in good conditions. If you don't have good upper body strength, have knee problems, or are afraid of heights, it's not a good idea to do the 3rd peak. If you don't have good endurance, it's just going to be a long day. Words of caution: try avoid going after a rainy day because the trail becomes very muddy. It started raining when I was coming down from the 3rd peak and the ground became slippery. Better to go with a friend if you can - there are only a few people hiking past the 2nd peak and in case you get injured, it's good to have someone with you to help. Preparation: pack enough water, gloves (protect your hands from climbing), long pants, and a light windbreaker (waterproof is ideal). You never know how the microclimate changes in the mountain. Throw on some hiking shoes too if you have them. You can get away with gym shoes as I did but extra grip comes in handy on a muddy day. Views: view is the best from the 1st peak. Past that is more for the adrenalin and experience. Parking: no official parking lot for the hike, park across the bridge on the side of the roads. It's a ~15 minute walk to the trailhead. Have fun out there!

It starts with a mellow walk to the rainforest, the 15-30 min in the forest and then up the mountain for an hour, really steep. At the top, there are some ropes that have been left by hikers and those do get replaced occasionally (I've done this hike many times) however it's dangerous because one can slip and fall and there's nothing to catch you. That is just the way to the first peak. There are three peaks all together but the view is the best from the 1st peak. 2nd and 2rd are too dangerous and I've only done those once. Be very careful, people have died on this hike.

The trailhead is on the far left side of the golf course parking lot as you come up from the road. A little ways in there are two big downed trees, and the trial to the falls takes a hard turn to the right. You follow the blue and pink ribbons, and eventually they split. The pink goes down along the streambed. The blue seemed to go up the streambed and involves some serious rope climbing, but then I lost the trail and couldn't see any more blue ribbons.

PARK ON THE HIGHWAY AT THE SCENIC POINT PULLOUT (leave a completely empty car, as there have been…read morebreak-ins here before). Really cool rainforest trail. Mostly shaded. **Wear trail shoes** for the multiple slippery patches of mud you'll surely encounter (and keep a clean pair of sandals in the trunk for the drive home). We did this hike in early September '21 from the Pali Highway viewpoint entrance (because the more traditional neighborhood entrance was closed for a 2-year renovation project). I'd rate this hike 4.5 stars; of our six Oahu hikes this trip, this trail was my 2nd favorite (my favorite Oaho hike is the Kuliouou Ridge Trail).. WHAT I LIKE ABOUT THIS HIKE: It is a good workout (roughly 7miles and 2K feet elevation gain to the waterfall and back), there was varied terrain and views to keep me interested most of the way, and it was shaded throughout most of the trail, making it a great hike to do on a hot day (which it was the day that we went). Although the trail is clearly marked, there are a couple of places where it splits, and thus I'd recommend downloading the trailmap to your phone via Alltrails here, https://www.alltrails.com/trail/hawaii/oahu/maunawili-falls-from-pali-highway?u=i , so that you have a good feel of where to turn at forks. Some of the minor downsides (half star deduction): - There is minor overgrowth in a portion of the trail (not full blown bushwhacking, but definitely some flora rubbing up against ones legs for maybe a total of 1/4 to 1/2 mile in each direction). -- nothing pointy enough to cut you though (see pic of ferns) - There was a single exposed section of cliff that was about 5-10 feet in length, but there was an anchored rope attached to the wall that made me and my wife (who is scared of heights) feel comfortable crossing it (to tell you the truth, I was surprised my acrophobic wife was fine crossing that section, but surprisingly she was). (see pic with my hand on the yellow rope) - There were occasionally patches of mud that one had to navigate through, but it was all on flat portions and so with the proper trail shoes there wasn't really a danger of slipping; - My wife got freaked out by the single sign near the beginning of the trail that said or depicted the danger of picking up ordinance (i.e. it explodes); clearly any such ordinance must be off the trail, as we hiked the whole trail (which is clearly marked) and never saw any metal. - One needs to keep moving past the beautiful stream, rather than stopping there for a 10 minute lunch (unless one is Deeted up with bugyspray that is); we stopped there for lunch only to find out that mosquitoes hang out there and were chomping at our legs the whole time.....no mosquitoes anywhere else on the trail, and had we not stopped at the stream to eat lunch, I am confident we wouldn't have even gotten a single bite. - The parking area to the entrance, which is a viewpoint area on the highway, has suffered car breakins; we were weary leaving our car rental (for which I opted out of the insurance) there when we saw broken car window glass from previous break-ins, but we decided that given that our car was completely empty of anything to steal we'd take the chance. We were hiking for 4 hours, and fortunately when we returned our car was in tact just as we'd left it
