Came here last month to get some kayaking equipment. Staff were very friendly and made sure to explain everything. This is a very spacious shop with lots of equipment to rent and a pretty clean bathroom. We had to put two kayaks on top of our car and the staff was very helpful in guiding us how to do it. They even gave us a small discount for doing some beach cleaning which was nice of them. Overall: 9.4/10 I'd come again!

Overall, had a great experience kayaking with Kailua Beach Adventures! They had plenty of open reservations when I checked the night before, so that made planning our day much easier, especially since we were staying in Waikiki without a rental car. We rented out a double kayak as well as a dry bag for $5, which I recommend for holding anything you plan to bring with you on the kayak, including phones. You will get wet! If you're visiting an island, they also collect a fee per person, which is mandatory from the state. We did the self guided option, so no tour guide. Then, they make you watch a 12 minute video, which I recommend paying attention to because it teaches you the basics, like how to properly hold the paddle, as well as the routes to the different locations and where to dock your kayak if you go to certain locations like some of the islands ($3 per person for Flat Island) After that, they give you your life vest and your kayak, which is on a dolly. They are not allowed to have the kayaks on the beach, so you have to walk the kayak about 10 minutes out to this river area. If you are trying to kayak in the ocean, you also have to drag it across sand for a portion of it (without the dolly, so it's heavy!). At Kailua Beach, there was a lady who helped us get onto the kayak, which was super helpful since I did not want to capsize first minute into the water. From there on, we kayaked to Flat Island. At the island, there is no one to help you dock the kayak, which can be a bit frightening, but luckily the water gets shallower to the point where you can just hop out into the water once you're close by. It was a bit hard to dock the kayak on the rocks because the kayak was so heavy. The island was lovely and had some nice tide pools. We even got lucky and saw a turtle! Kayaking back to the beach, I thought there would be someone to help us dock the kayak onto the beach, but there wasn't really a designated person waiting there. Luckily, there was a guided tour right behind us, and they had 2 people who were there to help the tour group dock and they helped us dock as well because we kinda were going in circles... it was mainly stressful because the part where we took off from was filled with people swimming, so there wasn't really a good place to dock the kayak. Note that they close at 5 PM and will charge a late fee if you bring the kayak back after 5 PM so make sure to keep track of time and to factor in the time it would take to bring the kayak back to the shop. Overall, I had a lot of fun kayaking with Kailua Beach Adventures and would do it again! If you've never been kayaking before, it may be best to do a guided tour, since you get a lot more help with the process. Also be prepared to walk/drag the kayak - it's an arm workout!

We had such an amazing time kayaking with Kailua Beach Adventures. They gave us all the information we needed before we went out onto the water, and had people out on the shore to help us safely get into and out of the water. We kayaked to an amazing little island close by and spent a long time exploring and taking in the views. I highly recommend!!! Thanks again, Tommy!!

We did the Twin Islands Guided Kayak Tour (5.5 hours) when we visited in January and had an awesome time. The guided tour included the kayak out and back, a short walking tour and a relaxing lunch on the Twin Islands. Lunch included a sandwich, potato chips, Oreos, bottled water, and Hawaiian Sun - all of which tasted especially delicious after the great workout we had kayaking out to the islands against the current. The company also provided snorkeling gear for anyone who wanted to snorkel at the Mokes, but we decided not to since the water looked quite choppy that day. Another perk was that we had the option to use any of their bikes or snorkel gear for the rest of the day after the tour. Several in our group decided to take the bikes out for a spin and head towards Lanikai Beach nearby, which is known for their snorkeling. The guided tour was limited to 8 people total, which was a good group cap size. There were a few other small groups already on the island when we arrived, but everyone was respectful, and it did not feel too crowded even though the beach itself wasn't very big. Special shout-out to our tour guide, Maggie! Maggie was both friendly and professional, and we felt reassured by her presence. We opted for the guided tour as it felt safer than trying to navigate by ourselves around the "danger zone" in the waters; the wind and waves did feel pretty strong as we were heading out to the Mokulua Islands, and Maggie's kayak was a helpful reference when we started to veer off-track. Her help was also much appreciated when we had to launch our kayak from shore. I recommend the Twin Islands Guided Kayak Tour and would return to Kailua Beach Adventures for more rentals next time I'm in the area.

My husband and I had Justin and Tommy as our kayaking and tour guides during our honeymoon trip in Hawaii, and they were amazing. From the very beginning, they made us feel comfortable, safe, and excited for the adventure. Justin had such a calm, knowledgeable energy--he explained everything clearly and shared so many interesting facts about the area, the wildlife, and the history. Tommy brought the fun and kept the whole experience light, relaxed, and full of good vibes. Together, they were the perfect balance. They paced the tour really well, checked in with everyone often, and made sure we were always feeling good. You can tell they truly care about what they do and want every guest to have the best possible time. Our honeymoon trip wouldn't have been the same without them. We left with beautiful memories, great photos, and a really special experience we'll never forget. If you get the chance to book a tour with Justin and Tommy--do it. You won't regret it!

Alex/Wesley were such helpful and fun guides for our Kayak excursion! We originally booked the Twin Island Kayak Tour, but due to weather conditions, we changed to the two hours and the staff was super informative and provided ample notice. On the tour, they were extremely helpful as we were a group of beginners but felt super supported and safe the entire time. The island tour itself was great and informative as well. Definitely recommend if you're visiting Kailua!

Kailua Beach Adventures is a reputable place to have a kayaking experience at one of the most beautiful beach locations in Oahu. They have guided tours or you can have a kayak rental and DIY it. What I'd want you to know is that (1) the journey from kailua beach to lanikai beach is beautiful and (2) kayaking can be very strenuous, so plan appropriately. I did a two-hour tour along with my family and, for my needs, I felt that this was a must. When we went, our guide was Tommy and he was very helpful. I also enjoyed the lunch that they provided afterward! Consider booking ahead of time and you may be able to find discount codes on their website.

We did the self guided tour to The Mokes. 10 out of 10!!! Staff was so helpful and friendly. Great extras. Beach chairs, dry bags, etc. Loved the lunch choices. Delicious sandwiches. Great Vegetarian Options for my husband. Such a fun beautiful adventure. Stunning island. Mahalo KBA

Kailua beach adventures were great for our first experience with kayaking! We were trepidatious at first, but the employees were informative and kind. They got us equipped with the best double kayak, and life jackets that Kailua could provide. Overall, would come again!

Got kayaks there to do something fun on a cloudy day! Good pricing (Dec 2024): 85$ for 4h for two-person kayak, or 99$ all day. 3$ per person to get permit for an island. 5$ to rent a dry bag. One downside is that you need to roll your kayak to the beach (around 500m/1500ft/0.3m). It's on a cart, so it's not that bad. It's harder on a way back, because if you put cart too far, it would be heavier to roll. But overall - great experience and I'm glad that we did it!

What an amazing experience! The 2-hour guided kayak tour with Tommy was the highlight of our trip. He was knowledgeable, friendly, and made everyone feel comfortable on the water, whether you were a beginner or experienced paddler. The scenery was absolutely breathtaking, and the best part--we spotted a sea turtle up close! After the guided portion, we had an additional 2 hours of free time to explore on our own, which was perfect for relaxing, taking photos, and soaking in the beauty of the area at our own pace. They allow you to rent all beach gear at their shop as included in your total tour price Everything was well-organized and safe, and the equipment was top-notch. Highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for a unique and memorable outdoor adventure. Thanks again to Tommy for making it so special!

Kailua Beach Adventures Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Kailua Beach Adventures

If we rent them at 3 pm would we still get the full 4 hours?

No, they close at 5p.m. (Unless they have changed their store hours recently) and you must return them before 5.

Do you guys rent kayaks by the hour?

Aloha Andy, we rent kayaks by the half day (4-hours) or full day (8-hours). You can't really make it to any of the destinations and back in an hour. I would plan on a minimum of three hours to have an enjoyable trip to one of the islands.

Visiting for the first time and wondering if its good to book in advance or same day rental is okay?

It’s definitely better to book in advance as we often sell out.

Do we need water shoes for kayaking?

They're not required but they're a good idea, especially disembarking at the islands. It's rocky!

How long does it take to kayak from Kailua to lanikai beach? Also do I need to return the cart?

It took my husband and me 1.5-2 hrs to get from Kailua to the Moku Islands (on a windy day) so I imagine it would take a third of that time (~30-45 minutes) to get to Lanikai Beach.

Are we given life jackets?

Yes! They have a bunch, in all sizes.

Do you drop off the kayaks at the beach site?

Aloha and no, dropping off commercial equipment at the beach is illegal. We are lucky enough to be within walking distance of the beach and set up kayaks and paddle boards on carts for easy transport.

Hi there! Do you have any fun activities for children 2 and 4 years old? Thanks

Yes, if they can reasonably swim with a lifejacket on. Kayaking in the Kaelepulu Canal could be a good option.

Does military apply to the hawaii resident discount? Thanks!

No it doesn't. You gotta have Hawai'i ID like driver's license. I'm military too & I never ask for the kamaaina because we're not actually full-time residents. Our subsidized housing makes the full time residents life more expensive so definitely… Read more

Do you rent OC1s or V1 outrigger canoes?

No, but we do rent high performance sit on top kayaks!

Are reservations required to rent kayaks? Or can you rent them the day of?

Reservations are not required but highly recommended (some days we do run out). You can also save money by booking online with code 'Yelp". www.kailuabeachadventures.com

Can you rent paddle boards without taking lessons here? Also pricing per hour?

Sure! If you have never done it before or want to get better we recommend a lesson, but if you are pretty confident you can just rent no problem. One paddle board is $59 for 4 hours, or $74 dollars for the whole day.

Do you guys give Kama aina discounts?

We do! We offer a 25% discount on rentals/tours and 15% discount in our retail store with a Hawaii ID. Come see us!

How old does a child have to be to kayak?

No age restrictions for kayak rentals, you just have to be able to swim!

Review for Windward Water Sports 33 Hoolai St, Kailua, HI…read more96734 Owner/Instructor: Jeff Tobias On August 31, I contacted Windward Water Sports, owned and operated by Jeff Tobias, regarding a kayak rental. Since it was a Sunday and most other rental businesses were closed, we reluctantly went with this company -- a decision I sincerely regret. From the outset, the experience was chaotic and unprofessional. Calling ahead yielded little useful information; staff were unclear, unresponsive, and seemingly uninterested in helping. We were forced to book online due to the lack of timely or reliable communication. Upon arrival, we were issued kayaks and life vests that were in poor, unsafe condition. The life jackets were tattered, worn out, and looked completely unmaintained -- a major safety red flag. It's clear that this business does not prioritize safety or equipment standards. There was no proper safety briefing, and we received no warnings about the unfavorable weather or ocean conditions. The water that day was rough, choppy, and unsafe -- especially for first-time kayakers. No one at Windward Water Sports made any attempt to reschedule us or even disclose these conditions. A responsible and ethical business would have recognized the risk and acted accordingly. The parking at the launch site was disorganized and overcrowded, costing us nearly an hour of our already limited rental window. What should have been a 20-minute paddle to the snorkeling area took over 90 minutes due to the dangerous wave activity. Once we arrived, visibility in the water was zero -- snorkeling was completely out of the question. To make matters worse, on the return trip, one person in our group capsized and could not reboard their kayak without assistance -- a terrifying experience that further reflects the lack of proper safety measures, briefing, or equipment quality. After this ordeal, I requested a partial refund, understanding that we used the kayaks briefly. I was met with a flat denial. The justification? "Business has been bad." That is not a valid excuse. It is completely unacceptable to prioritize your financial struggles over the safety, experience, and basic rights of your customers. At this point, given the unsafe conditions, defective equipment, and the lack of disclosure or professionalism, I am demanding a full refund. That is the only reasonable and ethical course of action. Jeff Tobias needs to do the right thing and issue a full refund immediately. This wasn't just a poor experience -- it was negligent, unsafe, and unethical. I will be filing complaints with relevant consumer protection agencies and posting this review across all major platforms to warn others. Avoid Windward Water Sports. Your safety and your money are worth more.

We called day of to confirm we are able to go to the sand bar on a Sunday. He had a few kayaks left and suggested we reserve it ASAP. We showed up at 10:15 to get our 2 tandem kayaks. Jeff and another employee helped us load it onto the top of our Nissan Altima, taught us how to load it, and told us where to park to get to the sand bar. We were off within 15 minutes. The kayaks are a lot heavier than I expected. They mounted them with ease but it was much harder for us to do on our own. It isn't hard in terms of the order to do everything or how to do it, but it was hard just because it is heavy. Overall I'd rent from here again as long as you have strong people to carry the kayaks. The rental for Kaneohe sand bar must be a full day rental (we used about 4.5 hours but would have felt rushed to get it back in 4 hours). It includes an anchor as well. It was $75 per tandem kayak + tax for us.

I wrote in the time that I wanted to start which was 1230 pm. I show up at 1230 exactly and go to check in at the outpost Hut. The 2 guys inside the Hut tell me they didn't see my reservation and they rented out all their balls to a group that just came in..... So...we had to WAIT until the group was finished to get the balls to play.... On top of that, I paid $10 per person to play, and the guy in the hut tells me there's only 6 or 7 holes available since they use the course to pop fireworks off of. New years was about a week ago!! You're telling me, you're too lazy to put back the holes for a whole week?! Cmon man..... Then, I ask for a cart to put all our stuff in and he tells me that they don't rent out carts but that I could get one at the golf hut. So my mom walks all the way over to the golf hut for them to tell her that they don't rent out golf carts for soccer golf......?! To top it all off, the course looks like crap. And they don't even have a score card to give you. Good thing I took a picture of their somewhat course layout so I knew where the heck I was going. The course is literally just grass that is so overgrown and bumpy that you cannot even call it foot golf. Save yourself time and don't go here.
