Headed back home from Maine I found this little Diner when I stopped to google local restaurants. So glad I found this place! Its set in a little old train car and decorated in 50's like type decor. It reminds you of a soda shop! Very small. They have regular table seating or you could sit on the bar stools up at the counter. The restaurant was featured on Guy's Diners, Drive ins and Dives, you can see the Guy Food Network sticker on the wall. I started with an old fashion root-beer float. You cant really mess those up, it was delicious. They serve you with a old fashion glass bottle of root-beer. I read a review that the fried chicken was pretty good so I decided to try it. It was the best fried chicken I've ever had. Crispy, drizzled with honey and delicious. I would recommend trying this if you stop here and enjoy fried chicken. My go to I-cant-decide-what-I-want spot. This place has it all and it's all tasty. The menu is huge and you can order breakfast, lunch and/or dinner anytime. My favorites are the provolone wedges, souvlaki salad (chicken is great but get the steak trust me), their fries are excellent, falafel wrap, griddled mac n cheese. I appreciate the aesthetic of an old school diner. Unfortunately, I found my experiences at Lake Effect to be underwhelming. Today I stopped by with a friend and sat at the counter. I ordered the vegan chickpea sandwich and coffee. The sandwich was just okay and pretty bland. With that said, I am impressed with the variety of vegan options. I was also disappointed as the half and half served curdled in my coffee. Overall, the waiter was attentive; a middle aged man who always seems to working. I was craving a standard diner style eggs and homefries plate. But, being already after 2:00 pm, several other options were ruled out. That's when I opened my yelp app to see what I had bookmarked to-try. Lake Effect Diner, perfect. I had them bookmarked for the griddled mac and cheese but I was pretty sure they'd be able to accommodate my late breakfast craving as well. As it turns out, this was great time to check this place out. There were only a few other people there when I arrived. I received a friendly welcome and took a seat at the counter. Their menu is pretty huge, so even though I thought I knew what I wanted, I took a few minutes to peruse it. The entire menu, breakfast, lunch, and dinner is all available any time. I ended up going with the Potato Pancakes Stuffed Florentine. That sounded really interesting and proved to be a great idea. I was thrilled to discover that they offer fresh squeezed orange juice. I had a pretty troubling incident today, and I figure it's worth knocking a star off of my review. We'd had a very nice brunch, with poutine and a Reuben sandwich, which were both quite excellent. We hadn't been lingering very long, just finishing our coffee, when they sat a party of 4 next to us, and then the manager said fairly loudly "and then when these people are out of here, we'll seat you 4." We looked at each other and the guy continued, "yeah that means you." So we vacated our seats. I felt it was pretty rude, and it made us both pretty angry, spoiling a perfectly good brunch. On the hunt for a great Eggs Benedict dish, I came down to Lake Effect Diner at around 2p. It was nice that they served their breakfast all day. It was $9 and they had a Crab Benedict available for $11, but I opted for the traditional. It came out very quickly and service was great (worth noting: I was the only one dining in this place at the time!) and seemed well crafted. The Hollonadaise sauce was creamy and tangy, while the eggs weren't very runny. The home fries that came with the meal were well spiced and delicious and had some onions with them. Such a great throwback. We first saw this place on food network, so when we traveled through buffalo, we made sure to stop in. Despite high expectations, it still did not disappoint. The manager on duty was busting his butt. He made sure to seat us immediately, and ensured that our order was taken and that our food came out on time. We ordered the Ruben with fries and grilled veggies, the Greek chicken slouvaki omelet with homefries, and the vegan French toast special. The common theme among all of the plates was that everything was fresh and made from scratch. You don't really expect grilled veggies at a diner to be good, most places just microwave frozen veggie packs they bought in wholesale. Not here. Even the veggies were fresh and cooked to perfection. It's a very small place inside. The diner was very cold and when we told the waitress, she didn't seem to care. The wait for our food was far too long--about 40 minutes. We had the meatloaf which came with fries. The meatloaf was tasty but had some sweet taste to it that I didn't care for. The fries still had the skins on them--and way over cooked in my opinion. My burger was comprised of a super thin patty which did taste good but it felt more like a junior burger than a regular one. The bun was supposedly from Luigi s which did taste good. The meatloaf roll was very good. I had onion rings which were cold. It's like they didn't change the oil for awhile as the fries and onion rings had a very dark color to them. I have always loved Lake Effect. First, I really like the decor. It's underwhelming diner decor, but with 80s music playing and to me, it's kind of charming. I've never had a bad meal. The only thing I've order which was underwhelming was the roast beef dinner. It looked like lunch meat with gravy. Weird. Most recently, my lady and I went for dinner around 8pm and we had the place to ourselves. I was starving and I had an Oreo milkshake, the meatloaf dinner with a salad and a side of a breakfast pancake. Delicious!! First of all, their milkshakes are amazing and made the old-school way, so I would definitely recommend them. I love their meatloaf and the gravy, but they should have fewer veggies in the meatloaf. And their pancakes will make your day. Comes with homemade butter and whipped cream. They are warm, thin-ish, and crispy around the edges. Downright amazing. My lady friend had a chicken finger melt and she loved it and kept stealing my meatloaf. Only thing to be wary about is the wait on a Sunday morning for breakfast. Went to Lake Effect around 7:30 on a Friday night. It was completely dead in there. Not sure if it's more popular during breakfast hours or late night but we were one of two couples in the restaurant during this time. It has the classic diner feel. Long counter with individual stools and booths. I ordered the classic chicken noodle soup and a side of griddled mac and cheese. My accompaniment ordered the smoked ham with red eye gravy dinner. My soup had great flavor but was quite oily. Also it was all dark meat chicken which looked gross in the soup. There was only about four noodles in the soup. But it really had good flavor. The mac and cheese was good but I don't love mac and cheese to begin with. The crusty layer of cheese was the best part. Next time I would ask for it extra "griddled" so it's more crispy. My accompaniment said the ham was good but there was hardly on the plate for $18. I tried it and thought it was good. It was cut so thin though and I like it a little thicker when it's off the bone. The gravy was very thin and oily. I never had red eye gravy before but from what I read it is supposed to have more flavor than what Lake Effect's had. This was featured on Diner, Drive In, & Dives with Guy Fieri on Food Network. But that was years ago... We both had a milkshake as well. I had the Banana Split milkshake and he had the Oreo Mint. Both were good. $6 each. Our service was terrible which is why I brought it down even another star. Again, there was two couples in the restaurant and two waiters. Ours was just not happy to be there and came to our table once for a drink refill. We were done eating for at least 15 minutes and she didn't come over until I basically eyed her over. All in all, the food was ok. Service was bad. But I'll give her the benefit of the doubt that she had a bad day. Could've been a better price. I'd rather go to the Olympic in Kenmore. Great diner and even better that I will be attending school in the area! My dad and I were visiting and decided to try a little bit of everything and bring the leftovers home. Our waiter was very friendly and told us that all meats were made in house and when asked what we should try, she advised the ham with red eye gravy. -We ordered the steak sandwich (philly style), the meatloaf sandwich, eggs chesapeake, side of griddled mac n cheese, and a side of ham with red eye gravy (seen on DDD). Steak was amazing. Huge piece, cooked perfectly and so tender! Meatloaf was good as well, just wish there was a little more. The crab cakes in the egg chesapeake were great! Wasn't a fan of the griddled part of the mac and cheese but the mac and cheese itself was very good. But the ham! It was beyond good. Definitely recommend ordering it! The red eye gravy was oily but so worth it. After we got our food, the owner or manager (I actually don't know what his title was) came over to talk to us and how the waitress told him our story of how were from out of town and wanted to try everything and was very friendly! Despite the restaurant settings from the 50s, the old posters hanging on the wall, the funny part is, they use a tablet to take your order, a perfect example of a fusion of the old and new. I ordered a 3-3-3(beacon, egg, pancakes). And they came in 2 huge plates. Serving size is huge! And it was only $8. We got there just a little before noon before the crowd. SERVICE!! The waitresses were both polite however unattentive. When we arrived all the tables were either full of people or filled with dirty dishes from previous patrons which was a little off putting. We waited about 5-10 minutes to get a table however I was ok with that as I saw the staff was pretty busy. As we got our table the place pretty much cleared out as we were there for a pretty late dinner 8-8:30 or so. I was quite surprised at although polite the lack of service. We waited for drinks, we waited what seemed quite a while for our food. We waited for refils on our drinks, we waited a while for the check. The server took our bill with my credit card and proceeded to clear dirty plates off of three other tables before ringing in my credit card and bringing the reciept back to me to sign. This 50s style diner is my go-to when in Buffalo ! I specifically request to go to this place when I'm with friends or if my boyfriend and I are in the area.... we already know where were headed for grub. I've mostly tried the breakfast options and they've all been delicious. I just can't resist anything else but breakfast when I'm at diners ! One day I'll go for the dinners and one day I'll grab one of their talked about milkshakes. I guess this review is mostly for the breakfast options, haha. I have tried the blizzard breakfast before but this time I went a little light and went for just the basic eggs, sausage, and toast. Still filling, still delicious. I've also had their pancakes, yum ! I've also tried their home fries before.. probably the best I've ever had. If you're reading this then you know where you need to go for some all day breakfast. I love being able to sit and look right into the kitchen.. that's one thing I wish I could see more in diners/restaurants. Not because I want to make sure my food is being made correctly but because I love seeing the hustle and bustle of the kitchen.. and just watching people make delicious food. One thing I really appreciate from this place is the fact that they get their eggs/beef from local suppliers/farms that promise to never mistreat their animals or pump them up full of hormones. It's always a great choice to go to lake effect diner! You get huge portions for what you pay. This is one of our favorite go-to spots for brunch. We just recently moved to North Buffalo and this is an easy car ride up Main Street for us. If you are ever going to brunch, go early! The place gets filled up fast, and rightfully so. My hash supreme was an outstanding breakfast of humongous proportion. Rather than talk about the delicious flavors of the hash creation, I will tell you that the thick Ryebread was baked on premises and served with homemade orange marmalade that was exquisite. It pains me to write a low review of a beloved local institution, but sometimes you have an experience so dumbfoundingly bad that there's nowhere to turn but Yelp. I rolled in here at 10 AM today with three friends expecting to grab a quick, tasty breakfast. We had to wait a couple of minutes for seating - sure, no problem, we were seated, given coffee, and asked for our orders within five minutes. Things were looking up. I'm not sure if we got trapped in some strange otherworldly time fold or what, but very soon it was an hour later and we were still sitting there with (empty) coffees and no food. Coffee refills were about 2/3 of a cup each. Still no food. Waitress spills a solid quarter of my friend's $9 apple cider mimosa and still gives it to him. Still no food. Table near us gets fed up with waiting for their drinks and decides to leave. Still no food. Finally, at 11:30, lukewarm food arrives. It's okay. I got the veggs benedict, which includes some pretty solid faux bacon, but was mostly bland tofu scramble on top of some soggy bread (presumably because it'd been sitting for a while). For your plant-based benedict needs, check out Providence Social's vegan benny. We're done eating by 11:40. We wait until 12 for the check, even after asking multiple waitstaff. Terrible service with no apologies or excuses is what took this from A-OK to an experience that may not even merit "meh". 2 stars for the quick and efficient seating and offering a couple vegan options. I did not receive my order until 9:41 am. If that wasn't bad enough I witnessed a cook barehand my toast after not 5 seconds earlier I witnessed him talking/texting on his phone while preparing food. Excellent lean and juicy burger! From out of state, working at the University of Buffalo, grabbed late lunch at this diner. The menu says Angus and brisket beef, wow this was as good as a burger you'll get at ANY restaurant. The fries were very good as well. I watched the waitress make a shake for another customer, and it was a work of art, it may have been the thickest shake ever. With all these gourmet burgers places, I certainly wasn't expecting anything better than a diner type burger, this one was thick and juicy (ordered medium) and made of quality beef. read more

I came to Lake Effect the other day for lunch because I had a hankering for a good Fish Fry. I was not disappointed. The menu at Lake effect is pretty typical of a diner, serving typical breakfast foods, lunch sandwiches, and dinner entrees all day, every day. I'd say my go to dishes on their menu are their Fish Fry (prepared in a variety of ways) and a milk shake. Their fish fry comes out piping hot and as far as fish fry's go, it's a good one in my book. Along with the fish fry, you get 2 sides, so by the end of your meal, you will definitely be stuffed. I recommend getting the griddled mac and cheese for at least one of the sides. Sometimes it a little hit or miss because I've had the mac and cheese burnt before, but usually it's delicious. And of course, the milk shakes are phenomenal. Lake effect is definitely not the healthiest of choices, but if you are looking for a good hearty meal in a pretty traditional diner, this is the place to go - especially for all the guilty pleasures like fried foods and milk shakes. The one down side of Lake Effect is that for a diner, it is a little expensive. I have to say for being such a seemingly desolate town, they have some amazing food! This was our last food stop on Labor Day weekend before heading back to CT. It seemed like there were 2 waitresses and the manager doubled as a busboy and they seemed crazy busy. Although they could probably use the extra help, Im not sure there sould be enough room for another waitress. Although hectic, the service was unaffected. Everyone was happy, no one was complaining, etc. I had a PB & J shake to start and OMFG it was delicious! mmmmm. Our table split the chili fries which were tasty as well. Not soggy, chili wasn't crap, it was really good. I ended up with BLT and homefries and needless to say I was stuffed but VERY satisfied. I also tried the Oktoberfest milkshake. This combination was a little bit strange but it wasn't bad. The service: The service was just as good as any other diner. I found it very helpful that the staff knew the menu very well and could even tell me what dishes were featured on diners drive-ins and dives. I also saw the manager being a team player by pitching in and helping out with wiping off tables. The atmosphere: 50s diner style. Would I come back? When I walked into the diner it was bustling at lunch time. I was in town for a wedding and only had a few opportunities to eat around Buffalo. We were sat at the first corner table and I wondered if I was sitting in a version of Edward Hopper's Nighthawks, the 1942 painting that depicted a sparsely populated Greenwich Village diner as a beacon on a dark city street - except this beacon is Lake Effect in Buffalo. I just loved everything about this place: The interior is perfectly nostalgic. The food selection was great, and prepared well. I had the chicken tenders and garlic Parmesan mash, both soothed my soul. I also ordered a chicken soup which was just not to my liking that particular day (too lemony) and our wonderful waiter politely whisked the dish away without any hesitation. He was even kind enough to not include it in the bill and let me tell you, that kind of manners are rare in the restaurant business. What an awesome find. We visit Buffalo twice a year and have wanted to go here. This visit we made it. Very interesting menu. Love the vegan options . Home made vegan bacon and tofu scramble were a hit. Had their home made jams as well. Food was amazing. Diner very clean. One girl was cleaning and polishing the entire time we were there. Mind you we came in for breakfast around 10 so it was not busy. The waitress was very efficient, thoughtful, around but not hovering. As business owners we were all impressed that the staff was working and not just having personal conversation about things diners don't need to hear. The entire place was spotless. I HAVE to start this review by saying that if you live in buffalo, then chances are you've been here at one point or another. For me this was always a place for family gatherings, and party's. But its also an acquired taste, I understand the reviews talking about the food not tasting great. But I feel its so much more than that. Its a cozy diner, but because of the food. I leave the lake affect diner with a 4 star review. read more
