When I said in my previous review / poem that Lady Wong is the best SE Asian pastry shop in NYC, this still holds true! I drop by their midtown location more often though when I'm in East Village/LES it's hard to resist them temptation to stop by! At this point I've tried most desserts and savory items on their menu, and as a whole really enjoyed them. As someone who's spent a lot of time in SE Asia and have spoken to friends who are from there as well, this spot is the most legit place for kuih, they've gotten the flavors (pandan, gula melaka, coconut, etc) and texture (smooth, bouncy, a little chewy) down pat. Their fancier items showcase brilliant pastry techniques and incorporate Asian and SE Asian flavors as well, with their mango curd mousse, black sesame passion fruit, pandan panna cotta being among my favorites, and their chestnut buche de noel is a seasonal delight. The desserts have a more subtle flavor and sweetness level than western desserts and I'm glad for that! Their sambal (sold by the jar) is fantastic and adds a spicy umami so highly recommend. They did seasonal ice cream pops one summer a few years ago and those were rich, creamy and scrumptious. In my most recent visit picked up a piece of cassava kuih $3.28 and hojicha sesame & red bean kuih $4.28. The cassava one of my faves and kinda tastes like a very light sweet potato flavor with the texture of a rice cake. The latter paired together a few notable Asian flavors and they each came thru in different bites. The husband and wife team that runs this spot is super kind and sweet, staff have been very helpful whenever I've had questions. Absolutely loved the talam jawa (pandan + palm sugar coconut): the delicate, floral taste of pandan paired perfectly with rich, caramel and brown sugar-esque palm sugar. The texture was super smooth and custard-like; I could eat an entire plate of these alone. The cassava cake was interesting to try but meh. It tasted like sweetened yam/potato and it just wasn't my thing Definitely would come back to try their other rice cakes and asian-inspired pastries! I LOVE KUIH!! The staff are always so welcoming and willing to answer any questions you may have. I've been here multiple times now, and I am never disappointment. They have a wide selection of kuih, nian go, cakes, and pastries. My favorite is their Talam Pandan. It has such a delicate balance of coconut and pandan with the perfect jello texture--just so refreshing. Their Pandan/Ube Serimanka and Ube Nian Gao are good too, but not super strong Ube flavor in my opinion. The Pandan Nian Gao is dense (like the Ube one), but I like this flavor more. The Mango Sticky Rice Tart is a popular treat and well loved. It's not super sweet, and beautifully made, but it didn't rlly reminisce of mango sticky rice though. The Brown Butter Carrot Cake is soft and moist, but the icing was not super soft and didn't really get any brown butter flavor. They also have a wide selection of drinks, and I enjoy their Calamansi drink. Very refreshing on a hot day! Overall, love this pastry shop. Im a veteran at lady wong for now, the cakes are incredible. Im so happy they exist and provide the flavors im looking for. Move over chocolate and vanilla-- heres lychee rose. It reminds me of trader joes raspberry vanilla ice cream bars and when i took the first bite I was floored. South east asian flavor cakes are insanely good and I don't mind paying the price because its super worth investing in this place . In my opinion, lychee rose is a bit better than the calamansi passionfruit cake as the coconut icing on that cake is too thick. This place offers very traditional and modern Southeast Asian desserts. Most desserts are traditional flavors including pandan, ube, mango, and durian. There are a variety of rice cakes (nian gao), crepe cakes, and tarts. Desserts are unique and ones you can't find easily in NYC. It reminds me of being in Singapore and Thailand. Definitely a different bakery experience! We haven't seen the flavors showcased here very frequently, like pandan. We got three of their dome pastries and my parents got two of the rice cakes. It was a small storefront in East Village but they do have some seating available but definitely not a place where you can chit chat and hang out for an extended period of time or study with your laptop in. We were served very quickly as we were the only ones and we got our pick of the desserts! Would definitely come back to try more of the cakes. read more

Definitely unique as I've not had this flavor before. Black sesame and passion fruit had both earthy nutty flavor from black sesame, and then a good citrus tart flavor from passion fruit. Passion fruit and calamansi cake was light, fluffy and fruity delicious. The kuih was good. Lady Wong is a patisserie celebrating Southeast Asian flavors. Their cakes are artfully blended with French techniques and aesthetics. I always appreciate the elegant design of their cakes. ＊Chestnut Bûche de Noël $69.88 This yule log was a beautiful work of art. It looked elegant with the edible snowflake candies and velvety cream piping. Under the thick and creamy vanilla mousse, it revealed a delicate center of chestnut filling and earl grey compote. Underneath it was a crunchy chestnut biscuit. I wished the it had a higher ratio of chestnut cremeux, but overall the flavors were unique and harmonious altogether. Small shop, limited seatings, and simple decor. There was only one person manning the store but he did a great job at handling customers and the phone, very friendly as well. We got the ube blueberry cake and matcha pandan mille crepe to eat inside the store. I used to come here often when it first opened and loved their calamansi and passion fruit cake, their nian gao, serimuka and their ube and durian roll cakes were also our favorites. This used to be my go to dessert place until that one time we preordered a calamansi and passion fruit cake for my MIL's birthday and everything was just wrong. The cake batter seemed raw, the cream cracked and was literally sliding off of the cake. We ended up contacting the shop and were told they mistakenly used the wrong flour and they ended up giving us a refund. It's been a good year since I've ordered anything from here but I was intrigued by their lunar new year special auspicious mandarin cake so I gave it a try. The cake was beautifully decorated and very festive for the celebration. The flavors were well balanced between the citrus from the mandarin and the sweetest from the lotus seed and almond paste. The only thing is I personally think there's too much mousse and would have liked to have more of the almond cake as I could hardly taste it and it would also be nice to balance out the texture because everything was just really mushy. I still think their best items are their nian gao, which has a great ube or pandan flavor, with perfect bouncy, QQ texture, as well as their serimuka in which it's not only aesthetically pleasing and pretty, the sticky rice also has the perfect chewy texture combined with their smooth flavored custards. I especially recommend their durian serimuka if you're a durian fan. Aside from the cake fail, I do think their staff were always nice and friendly. This is hands down, one of my favorite Asian bakeries in NYC. My favorite dessert here is the matcha pandan mille crepe cake which I've had many times. I also do like their kuih lapis (a steamed layered cake with a gelatinous and chewy texture, made from rice flour, tapioca flour, coconut milk, and sugar). It's a quaint spot that is easy to miss if you're walking by but I highly recommend popping in for a treat or two. There is a good variety of desserts, ranging from pastries to cakes to panna cotta, and they're all really cool flavors! We opted for two of their most popular desserts - Pandan Panna Cotta and Rose Kuih, which is a steamed layer cake. The Pandan Panna Cotta was absolutely amazing and came with a small packet for you to squirt the brown sugar into the dessert. If you're a coconut lover, you're in for an extra treat as the dessert also comes with toasted coconut on the top! My favorite was the Rose Kuih - it was so subtle and the perfect amount of sweetness. It's a steamed layer cake that is soft and chewy and made from coconut milk and tapioca flour. It was so good!! Maybe it's because I'm a pandan fiend and Lady Wong caters to my taste with every imaginable incarnation of those pleasantly floral leaves, but it remains my favorite of the three. I had Lady Wong saved for my NY trip. I've never had kuih before and I loooove pandan so I def had to visit! The bakery is this lil cute dessert boutique. We went on a Thursday afternoon so no lines or crowds. It's kinda narrow but enough room for some stools along the wall if you want to sit inside. She has a variety of visually appealing desserts to choose from. I actually don't have much of a sweet tooth but I wanted one of everything in here. Lols The girl working there greeted us when we walked in and she was so sweet. She answered all are questions and was helpful. I had the khanom chan and pandan serimuka. They did not need be refrigerated right away so I ate it later that night. Both were fantastic. Honestly a hidden gem! I love the flavors they have to offer and how simple the desserts are without being too sweet! My favorite thing was the Khanom Chan, which is a coconut and Pandan Thai layer cake which you can taste just a subtle sweetness from the coconut. I used to love coming to Lady Wong and trying their seasonal pastries, I'd come from across town just for their plum soda; It's refreshing and used to be a good deal. Yesterday I walked 40 mins just cuz I was craving the drink. After not going there for a couple of months, I find the price had increased considerably which is understandable given the inflation, but on top of that they implemented ~shrinkflation which I find unfair to the customer. My drink was 85% ice, after 4 sips it was almost done as seen in the pic. This on top of the price increases ($10 pastries) makes me sadly feel that this place is no longer worth it to come back to. Lady Wong has a wide selection of kuih and Southeast Asian influenced mousse cakes. I found their desserts fun to try but don't have any immediate plans to go back again. If I do visit again, I would opt for trying more kuih rather than their mousse cakes---even though the mousse cakes look beautiful and the flavor combinations sound great, in my experience they looked better than they tasted. My friends agreed with the assessment of "fun to try, but wouldn't get again". I tried: -Pandan Serimuka (Pandan Custard Sticky Rice) ($2.95) - good. I didn't expect the sticky rice to be salty, but it great on me and I liked how it balanced the sweet pandan custard. -Black Sesame Passionfruit Petit Gateau ($8.95) - black sesame mousse, passion fruit caramel, and chocolate sable. Sweeter than I prefer. I wish the black sesame taste were stronger; when eaten together I think it's overwhelmed by the other flavors. It was almost entirely mousse and caramel, and I would have preferred more textural variety. I preferred this to the ube blackberry though. -Ube Blackberry Petit Gateau ($9.25) - ube mousse, blackberry compote, ube cremeux, and vanilla cake. This was quite sweet. There was a noticeable ube flavor, and I liked the initial flavor, but I wish that this cake had been less sweet---it was difficult for me to keep eating it. The service is really kind and excellent.
