I stopped by here for a quick lunch to go in the middle of the work day while on a business trip. I have dietary restrictions and try to eat low carb, high protein and also lots of veggies. It's generally hard to navigate menus - usually they will tick one or two of the above but not all three. Or if they do, there's only one option which kind of sucks for choice. I ended up with a large soup of the chicken white bean and kale and a half egg salad sandwich. They offer samples of the soup which is nice. The two ladies helping me were also very polite. The sandwiches are pre-made, which usually isn't a good sign but my sandwich was very fresh - the bread, the lettuce, the egg salad. It was delicious, tasty and healthy. I was very hungry and it was quite satisfying. I had an hour drive and then ate the soup later. The stock was flavorful, there were a lot of beans and chicken, which was hearty and filling. I felt full but not heavy. I can't speak to the salad quality but I liked the healthy tasty options and fresh ingredients of what I ordered. Nothing crazy, just simple things done well. I never buy drinks because of all the sugar, but they had a strawberry passionfruit soda by Wildwonder which was really delicious and low sugar. It's very hard to find healthy drink options that taste good... so that was another win. I thought the pricing was reasonable for SF - $6.25 for the half sandwich (which was decent sized) and around $10 for the soup, which was a large. If you're looking for healthy quick options with protein and low carb that actually taste good and fill you up, try this place. I just wish they had this chain in the south bay! read more

No garnish on the loaded baked potato soup and I swear the Caesar salad dressing is not as good as good as it was before. Lastly, no butter for bread. There wasn't a lot of seating here, so we decided on takeout instead. *CHICKEN BACON COBB: Crisp romaine, grilled free-range chicken, uncured bacon, hard-boiled free-range egg, avocado, tomatoes & Point Reyes blue cheese with balsamic vinaigrette ($10.75 / $7.95 Pair It) *NEW ENGLAND CLAM CHOWDER: A thick, rich and creamy traditional recipe loaded with clams from the north Atlantic and red skinned potatoes ($6.15) I ended up grabbing a pre-made salad. I wasn't sure about the balsamic vinaigrette with the cobb, but it actually worked. Provided a nice contrast as a blue cheese dressing can make the entire salad too creamy at times. Since it was $3 less to pair it, I decided to get a soup as well. The soup was creamy and full of clams, but it needed pepper and just a touch of salt. Slightly bland for my tastes. 1. Their online menu does not match their in store menu so I had to make a last minute decision. 2. The quality of the food and size is not worth the price 3. The service wasn't that great -- I had gift cards and was instructed to swipe them on the card reader. I was asked if they were "new" gift cards which I don't know why. I tried to swipe My gift cards three different times and each time they had to reset the system because it stopped working with each swipe. Their queuing system makes absolutely no sense and it pisses me off every time. If you're in the salad line, when they finish making the salad you have to merge lines with people who are still waiting to order soup before you can pay. It feels like the soup line people are cutting me every time and i have no idea why they think this is a good queuing system. They use the same system for their other locations too. Hard to explain so i attached a drawing i made. One time I had them make a salad and waited in line to pay and then they told me their credit card machine was broken and I had to pay cash. Well I didnt have cash so they let me write an IOU and I didnt go back until months later (today). Don't choose today to piss me off today Ladle & Leaf. What, you did? I am (and was) having a terrible day. Then Ladle & Leaf decided to change their pre-made salad policy to only allow one substitution. Okay so I get a non-vegetarian salad as a vegetarian which means I sub chicken for one thing and then I HAVE to either forego what I don't like or include it....instead of swapping in something I really like for a salad that exceeds expectations. This rule is true nowhere else. Not at Mixt, not at Sweetgreen, not at Local Roots, not at Mendo. Shall I continue? So now I am getting a $12 salad for which I might not even like all the ingredients. Two substitutions and I wouldn't be complaining, but only one - which counts for the meat - makes me mad. Now Dear Reader, I know that I could get a pick-your-ingredients salad. But, what if I do like all the ingredients in the pre-mades except for two? And one is meat, and I am a vegetarian. Considering they decided to upgrade SF Soup to a higher end branding, you would think they would provide the hungry, health-conscious SF workers paying $12 for lettuce some customization. Despite Ladle & Leaf being a chain, this place is so good. I had heard from one of my coworkers that they serve motzoh ball soup, my ultimate favorite. I didn't realize that they have daily soup options, and that not all of their options on their website are available every day. I was disappointed to find that they weren't serving motzoh ball soup the day I went, so I decided to get the quinoa feta avocado salad instead. I absolutely loved it! It was a great portion size. I went heavy on the dressing. Make sure to grab a large piece of bread right before the cashier - it's included/free! While the space itself is pretty small, the line moves super quickly. Awesome soups and salads at a reasonable price! They offer tons of great salad options but also allow for building your own! While they offer tons of vegetarian combinations, the options with meat can easily have that item removed or subbed for tofu or something else. The Thai chicken salad was amazing and I made it vegetarian by subbing tofu. What's also great is they toss the salad for you before putting in the to go box because it's always hard to shake it up especially when they make the salad as big as they do. That being said you definitely get your money's worth with how much food they give you. Soups and sandwiches are also in the menu so will have to try that. They offer samples of the soup before you by which is also awesome and the soup comes with bread. You order at the counter and pay so it's quick and easy. Ladle and leaf is no stranger to financial district workaholics. With their numerous locations, meal pal/thnx/ritual partnerships, and extensive menu options, the lunch rush here is always wild. I brought my coworker and food lover here to enjoy a Yelp Elite event. We both opted for salads. I went with the kale Brussels salad and I added in avocado and beets. She went with the Mexican Cobb with chicken. We also got a tomato bisque and an oatmeal raisin cookie. The salads were nothing special. The size was appropriate for a lunch salad but the flavors seemed to be lacking. It also seemed like it was mainly just lettuce without a ton of extra toppings. In my kale Brussels salad, I thought the Brussels sprouts tasted a little odd - maybe they were day old? Pro tip - ask for extra dressing or get heavy dressing so you get more flavor for your lettuce. So you are probably wondering why the 4 stars for mediocre salads. Well, I recently went back to Ladle and Leaf for lunch with a friend and I opted for one of their specialty soups and oh my goodness it was DELICIOUS! The flavor was Coconut dal butternut squash soup - it was a lentil based soup and the butternut squash just sealed the deal. I wish this was a regular menu item but now I'll be monitoring this flavor on a daily basis to see when I can get it again! Attended the Elite Event with $15/person. I personally would not come back if I have to pay out of my own pocket because the price is too high for the quantity I get (personal opinion). The quantity nah seems small but they are very filling (carbssss!). No WiFi. The shop is located under a building. There is a bar by the window but there are no high chairs. The seatings are located outside (covered under the building). Variety of options from soup, salad/bowl, and sandwiches. My friend and I ordered a pick 2 deal (salad and soup with a free piece of bread) and they all came out to be a little under $30. Everything tasted alright. I would prefer Panera stuff over theirs (including the price) because at least Panera comes with a nice seating area and free WiFi. Ladle and leaf is a convenient lunch option in fidi, but that's also reflected in the prices. I've only ever had the soup here, but I think it's a little steep that it comes out to ~$8 for a "large" cup of soup. The soup is pretty good and does the trick on a rainy winter day (although the line also gets to be ridiculously long because everyone is having the exact same idea). My personal favorite is the chicken tortilla with all the toppings, I've also had the chicken noodle and the split pea and they're alright but wouldn't necessarily recommend either. I do love you get a thick slice of bread to dip as well. Also, as a tip they have a rewards program through Thanx where you get a free soup on signing up and a cookie on your birthday. read more

The space is clean, but not very large with only a few tables, so it's definitely more for takeout. You get your food quickly, which makes it perfect for the area. I picked up my MealPal: The Asian Chicken Salad was pretty filling with lots of veggies (mixed greens, carrots, cabbage, edamame). My only small complaint was that the miso sesame dressing was a bit too strong (bitter tones) and I only used half of it, but it may just be my tastebuds. Ladle & Leaf is rebranded from the SF soup place. This location is super bright and clean. It's pretty new, and I think they experienced a few issues with inefficiency in the queue system in the first week or so, but it seemed to be working okay today. It's perhaps a little confusing at first with separate queues for salads vs soups, but not too hard to navigate. I was going to go for a salad, but the soup smelled AMAZING, so I picked up a Quart (!) of the Clam Chowder, which came with fresh bread. I was going to go for a minestrone, however they had sold out by 12:30. Maybe something to work on. By the time I got back to the office (not far), I did have to reheat the chowder. I think it'd probably be okay for most, but I like my food HOT, and that it was not. The chowder was tasty, and well salted (I love salt, but I'd perhaps give it a miss if you're not that way inclined). The quart was obviously big enough to take some home for dinner. I also picked up a choc chip cookie which was nice enough, but at $2.50 I'd probably skip in the future. Overall, I think it's a little pricey for what it is, but the ingredients are fresh and it's in central SF, so I'm not so fussed. As a tip, I'd go for the custom tossed salads instead of the pre-made. They're much bigger and look tastier and more 'vibrant'. Also, looking at my receipt I was charged for a medium and I specifically requested the regular size that was the smallest and that is what I got. So I was overcharged. I used to frequent the Ladle & Leaf at Oakland's City Center when I worked in Oakland so I was excited to see a location opening downstairs from my new office. Negative: Unfortunately, the portions at this place are lame! I usually make my own salad (pick 4 toppings) and start with a romaine base. How much is romaine?! It can't be *that* expensive... based on the portion size, you'd think it cost a nickel for every leaf. Needless to say, I've been here twice and left feeling ripped off both times. Was so excited about this place but WOW. What a let down. Found the pop up tucked away in a virtually empty cafeteria. There was no posted menu or indication of sizes, so I asked if there was a chicken noodle soup. The guy confirmed and asked what size. There was no indication of what sizes we're available so I asked for a bowl. He agressively yells WHAT SIZE? I asked politely for a bowl. He screams WHAT SIZE DO YOU WANT LADY? At which point I stopped, shocked and said "hey I didn't mean to upset you, I just don't understand what the problem is. I just want a bowl of soup." He rolls his eyes and says there is regular and large, no bowl. So I asked for a regular soup. The woman at the register apologized for him acting like a crazy person. ....in the end, the soup wasn't even good. So basically....I got screamed at by a crazy man and ended up with crappy soup. Tried Ladle & Leaf's make-your-own salad for lunch today and it was disappointing. There were a lot of really basic toppings, but anything of substance was extra. The grain toppings were all disproportionately warm to be on salads, the apples were cut into huge chunks, and the meyer lemon vinaigrette was too bitter. I've heard good things about their soups, but if you want a salad, I recommend you walk a bit and go to Foccacia for a cheaper, better quality lunch. read more
