LA23 BBQ is a solid choice! There's usually always a line of folks waiting to get some good food. The menu has the typical bbq offerings and a few sides to choose from. They do offer a family pack to feed 4 people which is convenient. You can pay via Tap or Apple Pay. If you ordered takeout, they will call your name out and hand deliver your order. Dine in seating is on pinic benches under a covered pavilion. The parking lot tends to get full during busy hours so have some patience. I recommend supporting this local business. Enjoy! read more

I was craving some bbq, so I decided to stop by this place for the first time since I heard positive reviews about it already. The area is outside, but there is enough space for seatings. Service was pretty nice and quick. I ordered the "Top Gun," which is an order of 2 meats with 2 sides ($20.00). For the meats, I got their brisket & ribs. For the sides, I got their coleslaw & baked beans. I also got an extra fountain drink ($2.00). Their ribs were delicious! It tasted really tender and had the right amount of flavor to it. The brisket was good as well, but I felt like it was a bit dry (but still good). Coleslaw was okay too, but the baked beans were really tasty with extra meat added to it as well. I thought the pricing was pretty decent, but I wish they would've added 1 or 2 more pieces of meat but it's all good. Overall, La23 BBQ is a nice chill spot for some bbq. It's right across the naval base, so you'll see alot of military personnel eat here. But be warned... I got here exactly at 11 am when lunch opens, and there was already a line! My boyfriend and I went to LA23 BBQ one day for lunch. We got there about 30 minutes after it opened and there was already a huge line and wait. They ended up selling out of a few things right after we ordered, so definitely plan on getting there early. We got the ribs, pulled pork, mac and cheese and beans. They were all very good. This BBQ joint, outside seating only with some plastic sheets up to shield against the elements, came highly recommended. No table service. We have eaten here three times. Here is my recap review. 1. Breakfast - sausage taco and brisket taco. So loaded in grease in the bottom of the tacos, I stopped eating them out of fear for my gut. If you have the stomach for it, what I ate was tasty. 2. Lunch - We've tried the brisket, pulled pork, sausage and ribs and all 3 sides. All were very good in taste except the sausage, which was just sausage. 3. Sides - the mac & cheese is good, coleslaw is fine and beans are okay. Unfortunately sides at a BBQ restaurant are important to me and play into my decision on whether to revisit. 4. Sauces - okay. Nothing to write about. General consensus is good BBQ doesn't need sauce; I find the meat here a bit dry, so I did use the sauce. The pluses are: 1. Service is pleasant and reasonably quick. 2. The pickles on the meat are AMAZING! They make them and you can buy them in small quantities if you ask. 3. Pricing is reasonable. I came here because of reviews on Yelp and read some good things about their food. Plus it's close to the naval base where we shop at the commissary, so stopping in wasn't out of the way at all. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich, (which had loads of unseasoned meat) and a side of baked beans. Although the meat was not flavorful or seasoned at all, the bbq sauce made up for what the meat lacked. I'll give their sauce five stars! That said, I've certainly had better pulled pork but this was not the absolute worst. So, I'll stop right here as I'm opting to modulate my thoughts about their decor. I was uncomfortable here. Turkey plate for lunch is a perfect high protein lunch. Turkey smoked to perfection, big portion and it doesn't break the bank. Love the vinegar based slaw, bit on the sweet side which I also enjoyed. And the baked beans are simple, yet right on! I've been here for breakfast a bunch, and that breakfast burrito is the best! The also do omelettes, from 6am to 9am. The owner is a huge help to the community, regularly giving food for the local sport teams and Special Olympics. Best BBQ in the New Orleans area for sure. Leg-end-ary! And I am not only talking about the BBQ, but this joint is one-of-a kind! First of all, it feels like it is at the ends of the Earth as you have to drive south about a good 20 miles South from New Orleans as it is located in Belle Chasse. Second, there is no inside dining here. It has picnic tables sat up underneath a huge awning. Third, this place looks like it is just put up in a parking lot between a busy highway and a too close for comfort railroad track. Fourth, the 3 meat plate is called "Top Gun!" Are you ready now to see this place because if you are not, the BBQ is phenomenal! I went with the fore-mentioned Top Gun that comes with 3 meats and 2 sides. I chose brisket, pork, ribs, baked beans, and mac and cheese. The Ribs were super tender with an excellent sweet glaze. I do not know the type of ribs they are but my guess is some sort of baby back that is separated. The bone is curved and short and meaty on top. The pork was perfect as it was also tender and not dry! The same can be said about the brisket. I really can't decide which meat I liked the best. They were all phenomenal! The beans had a smoky flavor to them but also had pieces of brisket in them. The amazing mac and cheese had a distinct cheesy flavor to it. I asked what did they do to it and basically all they said was they smoked it too! There are 2 sauces - a sweet and mustard. Neither have any heat and if you have ever came across my other reviews on Yelp, you would know I am a sauce-a-holic. I felt like the sauce didn't add much to the meats. That is not saying that the sauces were not good, but just tells you how good the meats were. The one thing I did not like was the absence of a pure sweet tea. There is a sweet tea made with lemon, but it tastes more like a mild lemonade. At first, I didn't like that, but it grew on me. So now, I will be satisfied with their mild lemonade sweet tea. DA BEST! The smell alone is satisfying. The smoked chicken was moist and skin was perfection! I'm a brisket girl and the BARK on the brisket almost made me cry it was so good. Everything was delicious but let me tell you about the BBQ beans! I HAVE NEVER TASTED BBQ BEANS LIKE THIS BEFORE. We really love this place!!! You can smell the smoked meat a mile before you arrive!! The BBQ BRISKET is the absolute BEST! We also love the BEEF SAUSAGE and the BBQ BEANS which are made with BEEF BRISKET and NOT PORK. It's one of the only places that you can find BBQ BEEF as the main focus!!! The BBQ sauce is really good too. The only thing missing, in my opinion, are baked potatoes....but they do offer potato salad, which is pretty good too! It's definitely worth the drive to Belle Chasse. It's a very casual place. LA 23 is awesome. SO awesome that on the days I visited it looked like some dude was landing a fighter jet across the street to come get some BBQ. Every time I have read an article extolling the awesomeness of the Nola BBQ scene someone in the comments mentions LA 23. I've always remembered those comments but I have almost no reason to make the trek to Belle Chasse. That all changed when I had to be in Myrtle Grove for work a few weeks back. After I finished with work it was right about 11, and LA 23 was on the way back, so I stopped. LA 23 is a pretty simple place. Ordering is done at a walk up window and there is a large covered outdoor area to eat. The tables and chairs aren't fancy, but BBQ isn't some hoity toity affair. On my first visit I took my food to-go. The 25 minute drive back to my office did not affect the quality of that meal and I was blown away how good it was. It was so good that I decided to grab a co-worker and head back to Belle Chasse just to visit LA 23. We arrived right at 11, which is what I recommend as it starts getting crowded a short time later. On both occasions I ordered the same thing. Here are my thoughts: Brisket - I got a half pound of sliced. The meat had a very distinct smoke flavor. That coupled with the simply seasoned bark made for one of the best bites of brisket I have had this year. Sauce was unnecessary and I could totally see eating it by hand as I drove away had I known it would be that good. Beef and Cheese Sausage - I got two links. The sausage is also heavily smoked. The casing was a little more tough than store bought smoked sausages, but once past that, the flavor was pretty darn tasty. I am normally not a fan of eating outside when it's ten thousand degrees outside. But I will make an exception for LA 23. The fans keep that area fairly comfortable, and the BBQ is so good you forget the heat. I will probably make another trek to LA 23 soon and think you should to. read more

OMG. This place is TO DIE for. Their meats are soooo good, and their sauces add an amazing kick. The price is fair, about $10-14 per plate (we ordered 3 - the pork, chicken, and brisket). My husband had the brisket but tried my pork, and while he liked the brisket a lot, he said the pork was better. I haven't had a chance to try my daughter's chicken yet, but thank the Lord we had a lot of leftovers so I can dig in when I'm not full anymore. We all got mac and beans on the side... both of them are SO DAMN GOOD. Ugh, the bread. The freaking insanely delicious bread. Ok, it is official I can't find good barbecue anywhere else in the United States because I compare everybody to this place. They have gotten so much better on their brisket everything they do has improved 10 times since they started. My third BBQ review for the year. Today I find myself in Belle Chasse, Louisiana at La23 BBQ. It's across from the entrance to the Navy Base. I enjoyed it. Very good food. I even had an air show practice season with an F22 Raptor and F18 Super Hornets doing burner turns while I ate. There is no indoor dining although there is a big awning with picnic tables and some protection from the elements! I had a two meat plate with brisket and pulled pork. Lots of sauces to choose from. Brisket was good but not great. Pulled pork was delicious as I had some good barky pieces. I love a good bark. Side were Mac and Cheese with Coleslaw. All good there! This bbq place is the best one I've ever had down here. Sometimes you have to come early though. They usually run out of meats really quick. The sauces are pretty good. My favorite sauce would probably be the sweet bbq. We would always load up on that bad boy and drench it in our meats. Just be aware that sometimes this place can be a hit or a miss. Usually they're consistent on how they cook their meats but sometimes it can be a little too dry. I usually get their Beef Sausage so that is never dry. Whereas my boyfriend is constantly getting the different variety of meats so he would sometimes complain to me that the meats are dry on some days. read more

Thus the boys, heretoafter known as Aaron and Bobby, created LA 23 BBQ, named after its highway location, and nothing more mysterious, features a short menu, long on flavor, of ribs, brisket, pork, and chicken, accompanied by traditional sides. They begin selling Monday through Friday at 11 AM, and when it's gone, it's gone. Period. My pal Randy, knew enough to call Aaron and Bobby ahead of time to hold some food, lest we be shut out upon arrival. We dined on brisket and pulled pork sandwiches, with slaw and pickles on the side. The pit masters shop carefully for their meat on a weekly basis, and change it up with suppliers to make sure they get the best. In the world of BBQ, it's damned tough to keep a brisket moist and flavorful, and LA 23 succeeds. The pulled pork was superb, as well, and I'm a pulled pork snob. The key to fine BBQ, as with many things in life, is low and slow. First time having bbq in LA and I heard about this place from my co workers so I had to come check it out. First impression- food was amazing. I loved what I got, which was the brisket sandwich with a side of beans. The brisket was juicy (a little fatty but not to much) and tender. I loved the slaw on the inside as well as what I believe is either sweet pickles or sweet jalapeños. The bbq sauce is flavorful. Nice mix between tangy and sweet. The beans were a 8/10. Tasted good (I don't like sausage so I didn't like the sausage in it). My only downside with the beans is there was so little on my plate. I was assuming I'd get an actual side like a side cup. But they placed it in the tray and it was just enough for only 3 bites with 2 slices of sausage in it. So that was little disappointing, while my friend got the Mac and had a whole side cup. Overall I give this place a 8/10. And I would recommend this to a friend but ask for the beans in a side cup:). read more
