I'm not commenting on the plate specials or desserts. All those things could be good. But the fried shrimp and roast beef & ham poboys were sub par compared to pretty much every other poboy I have had in the greater NOLA area (which is about 15 or so). The fried shrimp tasted like the oil had been used too many times (plus the toasted bun had a smoky/burnt flavor to it), and the RB/H poboy just needed more seasoning. It just was there. The fries were huge for $3. Crazy value. But they needed a lot of doctoring up because they are served as just fried potatoes--no seasoning. As many have mentioned before, the price is great and the people friendly. But don't drive out of your way for the aforementioned poboys. read more

Let me tell you something guys eat out a lot and when you're in New Orleans, you're looking for lunch you want something absolutely delicious. It's not gonna cost you a fortune. There is no other place that can touch the red barn. Incredible pole, roast beef meatloaf everything they make absolutely fresh and delicious, including the crispy Leidenheimer bread, obviously it's my favorite place to eat in the city. The food is delicious. You will not find a better value for your money, and honestly, I'd be willing to pay more for how good the food is. It's cash only, which is perfectly fine by me. They have an ATM on site in case you need it, and they take checks. The Red Wagon has been in Harahan longer than I am alive. How long has this place been here. My God! It is heaven! We ventured out here for lunch on day. We walked into the restaurant which is part grocery store with bulk items like sams club sized mayonnaise which is also heavenly. Their menu consists of breakfast food and new orleans seafood. I opted for the shrimp plate that comes with a salad and a side. We also got a large order of cheese fries. The hubby got the large fried Fish poboy. There is small and large. This is the part where you may want to READ the actual size of this baby. While the hubby went to pay, I sat down at a table for us. I happened to sit near an adorable little old lady and she giggled as she saw the expression on my face when the hubby's poboy - which was the size of a submarine - was being delivered to my table. The little old lady said, first time here? I laughed with her and told her I was gonna get a pic of his face when he turns to see the size of the thing. And I did. And we both laughed again. The hubby was pleased with his food, he had left overs. The fries was also an enormous portion and had left overs. I enjoyed the flavors of the fried shrimp. Very good. The salad was not a salad though, it's just lettuce on the plate. This place is in a great area with lots of food options nearby. I really loved this establishment and the funny memory that was made. Great value for the money. Got a 1/2 and 1/2 roast beef and shrimp. You have got to eat the roast beef right away. Any time spent in the bag and it a hot mess when you try to eat it. This is the sliced roast beef and gravy not the shredded, so something to know. Second thing is this is a cash only business, no cards at all. They do have an ATM on site. Fries were decent but get cold quick when you are grabbing to go back to your hotel. read more

I ordered a hot sausage poboy from Red Wagon with my customary request ( fry the patty hard). I expected a Paton hot sausage patty. However I was greatly surprised when I took a bite and realized that the patties were made in house. The poboy was truly the best hot sausage that I ever had. I will be spread the word. Unequivocally one of the best bang for your buck poboys you can get basically anywhere. The shrimp poboy was pretty standard but with the portions and price, without a doubt money WELL spent. Tons of food for half the price of most overpriced poboys today, cannot recommend enough. Friend of mine who lived here for 67 years told me about this place. And I think I agree that this place has the best fried shrimp po boy. The batter is not light, but is seasoned just right for delicious fried shrimp, put that in a soft but crusty French bread with tartar sauce and you've got a winner! It was amazing. I had the standard roast beef and it was great as well, I think I can eat the 16" large one no problem. It was crowded with no parking and waited long time for the food to come out. My mom grew up right down the street so anytime we come into town to visit my Grandma or other family we always make a stop at Red Wagon! It always feels so nostalgic because nothing has changed in the 27 years we have been visiting. No hype, no frills, just excellent friendly service, modest prices, huge portions, open atmosphere, clean and did I say consistent! I can't seem to get past the oyster poboy but do look forward to trying other meals in the future. I like walking in and the gal who initially took my order the first time in had remembered me and how I liked my poboy! I'm an oyster connoisseur! They were perfectly fried and sitting atop the best French bread. I love French bread that is co weed with sesame seeds, a light crisp to it and soft on the inside. I heard great things about this place! Stopped here for lunch and got a house salad that was about $5. The price is what sold me in the first place.Much to my surprise the salad was huge. The portion was unbelievable for the little price. The salad was stuffed to the top of the plate with chicken, real chopped bacon,egg, & I added shredded cheese and tomatoes.(Well worth it)The chicken was diced into cubes, making it a lot easier to eat in a salad. I can also appreciate that they provide you with sufficient dressing, so your not left with a dry salad. I will be back! read more

A hidden restaurant in Harahan in a small strip mall. Plus it doubles as a small grocery with a deli counter... Quite a few 4 seat tables with black and whited checkered table clothes. Fairly full at lunch time. Place your order at the counter and it is brought to your table. Just tell if it is for here or to go. In addition to the regular menu, there are also daily lunch specials M-F. All specials are served with bread and (salad, veggie, or dessert). My favorites are their Meatloaf w/ Baked Macaroni and the roast beef plate. You also order the roast beef as a sloppy poorboy. They don't take credit cards, but do take checks. read more

Mainstay in the neighborhood that is still open and still serving delicious food in a time when we need it most. We've ordered poboys from here so many times I can't count, and so I can't believe I haven't written a review before. My favorite time to order from them is early lunch on a Saturday when we're outside doing yard work. They're a quick drive away, the food is always prepared fresh, and lunch never breaks the bank. Service is on par with what you'd expect from a long-standing neighbor joint; super nice people. They have a large menu of hot and cold poboys, specialties, and hot plate daily specials. Poboys are large enough to share if you're into sharing, and priced for every day eating. Sides and drinks are added separately, which I actually super appreciate. Parking lot isn't the biggest if you go during a rush time, and be prepared to pay in cash (not a bother to me at all). The inside (when we can go in again), can get packed around lunch, but other than that time it's pretty open. They have grocery items for sale, and tables you can sit to eat - though it's all counter service. Order and pay, then take your food where you want; to a table or outside. Not sure why people have a hard time with this one, but it's an older poboy shop model that this place is keeping alive - and I love it. read more

I've heard a bit about this place and it's been on my radar for a while. Being a huge lunch salad guy, I go in to try their House Salad. As far as bang for your buck, this place gets a star or two for that alone, about $6 after tax for a salad with bacon, egg, chicken, lettuce and the dressing of your choice; alongside four or so packs of crackers. I was shocked to see they give you three sauce cups full of your requested dressing, I didn't need all three whatsoever, but quite a generous gesture. Speaking of generous gestures, the staff here was incredibly nice to me. I told them it was my first time and they walked me through all the specials and such. High marks for the people along the good line. Unfortunately this place does lose some significant points for how surprisingly rude the cashier lady was after the rest of the staff was excellent. Additionally, I think this place could use with a "cash or check only" sign where you order and not just in front of the register. When I went to give the cashier my card she told me "cash only" with a tone that would make one think I just insulted her family. As for the taste of everything, the salad was wildly mediocre, yet also cheap and satisfied my hunger. While I was happy that the large amount of chicken was present in my salad, the meat could have used some seasoning. On the bright side, the bacon was crispy. Will I return? Sure! I'd for sure give it another shot; with cash in hand no doubt. But as it stands this trip receives a 6/10 in my book, equating to a 3 star rating. read more
