I kid you not - the juiciest most flavorful fried shrimp I have ever had! My pictures don't do it justice!! Great variety of local beers, other cool items on the menu. Ambiance was cool, you could tell it had been here while. If you're in the area be sure to drop in. I toured in for the pic and they said it was too long: While it looks plain, they are the best fried shrimp I have ever had. Juicy, seasoned just right, and both the shrimp and oyster came out hot!!! We went on a Thursday night and they were doing song bingo. The music was rather loud, but the staff was very friendly and helpful. So let's talk about food: fried mushrooms tasty, only 2 cooks for full bar of hungry people so you're waiting about 45min. Tasty grilled chicken sandwich, tasteless fries - asked for no mayo repeat no mayo and lo and behold the bun and toppings smothered in mayo. She sends it back and guess what they do? Wipe it off. I said no, I don't like mayo, seriously? And they give me fresh bun (not toasted) with the same mayo smothered toppings. That's a training / lack of manager issue. The Rivershack Tavern is well-named! It is located on River Road in a historic building that has a great deal of character. This building might be considered by some a shack, and it certainly is a bar. However, it also serves up some amazing food. It's historic inside as well as outside, having classic signs, posters, and other New Orleans memorabilia displayed on virtually every surface, including the ceilings. Also noteworthy are their barstools, which have amusing legs attached. The interior is rather dark, even in the middle of the day, but don't let this deter you. Your eyes will quickly adjust. This might be an advantage if your visit is to engage in day-drinking! However, if your visit is to eat, first look for the board displaying the Daily Special. These are a great choice and may include things not normally on the menu. Variety is the spice of life and all... However, the menu is adequate for most any purpose. There are a great variety of sandwiches, wraps, salads, plates, and appetizers! I like that the sandwiches can be customized with sides. One can swap out regular fries for sweet potato fries, or there are really great and crispy tater tots! One can even opt for a bowl of gumbo or soup! Some of these changes involve a slight up-charge, but are worth it. Speaking of the soups and gumbos, these are really great choices. I happened to be there when French Onion Soup was part of the daily special, and it was amazing! Had a great big toasty chuck of bread with cheese on top, and the soup was rich and delicious. Their gumbo is a substantial choice, with great and deep flavors. I also recommend their BLT, which pairs well with a bowl of soup. The waitstaff is friendly and helpful and the prices are fair. I have been here two or three times for various functions and get-togethers, but never actually tried their food. This time I did, and I was not disappointed. The po-boy I had was piled high. I took half of it home. The fries were good and the price was reasonable. I'm sorry I waited so long. The list of draft beer is extensive, and the prices are good. (PBR on tap! Hard to find...). If you pay with cash you get a little discount from the card prices. The servers were friendly and cheerful. They knew a lot of the customers by name. The atmosphere was nice, like just a bunch of folks hanging out and having a good time. They have live music on some nights, so it might be crazier then, but I felt right at home. Much appreciated. I was driving down River Road and came upon this gem of a place. From the moment you step inside you can feel the history. The food, drinks and service are awesome! I had the shrimp po'boy and some fresh crawfish they were boiling outside on the patio. I could have sat there and ate crawfish all day. I've always been a fan of this place. Their fried alligator bites and fried mushrooms for appetizers are great and the tuna sandwich is one of my favorites. There's a lot of variety on the menu and their drinks are even more amazing. They'll put fresh fruit purées in their cocktails and even add it into wine for me. I like to come here to belly up to the bar for what are probably my favorite bar stools ever. Not because of their comfort but because they are decorated with clothing and pants falling off etc to appear like legs etc. They offer a great beer selection, very acceptable wine list and a full bar. The bartenders while efficient usually have a bit of an attitude. The food is fairly good as far as bar food goes. So if you are a fan of dark somewhat divey bars with fun bar stools make sure to check this place out if you are in the area. Was raining when we went so didn't get a picture. They have crawfish during the season as well. Parking is potentially a challenge, and the service was a bit slow. It's also a big place that was busy so this explains it. Onion rings were okay but the burger was a proper medium rare. 4/5, nothing wrong with it but I reserve 5/5 ratings for places that are worth a trip for, and while solid and good, this place is not somewhere to make a trip out of. Found this gem by searching yelp. I use yelp regularly when traveling. We were a large party of 16. Called ahead and our table was ready and waiting. Server was very friendly and accommodating to all our needs. Tried the fried green tomatoes. Not bad! Onion rings were great. We also tried the gator bites. They were very good. Stop by the river shack to get something to eat. Decided on grabbing a quick burger. Even though I thought a quarter pounder hamburger would be plenty what I was served was decidedly less than that. And I realize sometimes you have to account for loss during cooking but this was worse than that. But the thing that took me by surprise was when ordering the very charming waitress asked me if I wanted to make it a cheeseburger and I said yes and then asked me if I wanted grilled onions on it and I said yes. And then asked me if I wanted it dressed and I said yes. So no big deal right? When I got the food it was passable. But nothing special. Then I got the bill, and I was actually a little bit more than surprised when a porn review I saw that they charge me two dollars to add cheese and then they added one dollar charge to add onions. I don't wanna be picky, but this is the only restaurant I've ever seen that done. And it wasn't like the hamburger was cheap. Sandwich and a drink 20 bucks. The luncheon special was white beans with a pork chop or with catfish. One of us had the grilled pork chop that was extra thick and grilled perfectly. One of us had the beans with fried catfish. Catfish was served as two large filets perfectly fried in a delicious batter... awesome. The beans were delicious and also included good corn bread.
