This spot has potential. I believe dining here earlier and asking questions about the price on everything you order will get you a good experience. Otherwise, you'll be in for a shock. We came here for a birthday dinner and when our last guest arrived, she was told the kitchen was closed. We should've been given a time that the kitchen would close seeing that we were still dining and ordering. When ordering entrees the waiter kept asking about sauces atop the entrees. No price mentioned whatsoever, just sang off a list of sauces. Apparently those sauces don't come with entrees and were additional charges that were not pre-disclosed. When my red fish came out, the side item was wrong. Instead of leaving the perfectly cooked fish and potatoes with me, they took the entire plate back. I asked for the sauce on the side because I'm not typically a sauce person. My plate was brought back smothered in sauce, red fish overcooked and rubbery, and the good quality cooked potatoes swapped out for some that needed a better consistency. To make matters worse soon as the plate was sat in front me my cousin arriving was told the kitchen was closed. She ate some of my red fish and agreed they re-warmed it, ruining it. Now this place uses some good seafood, I can tell it's a good piece of fish and good shrimp (shrimp wasn't seasoned well). So to take a cooked redfish back to the kitchen and re-warm it before serving to a guest is insane. This really upset me because that looked like a good quality red fish and it was ruined. Stopped in for happy hour and ended up having an experience worth writing about. We sat at the bar, which turned out to be the best seat in the house. The happy hour filet po'boy was the standout we ordered it without the bread and paired it with green beans and mashed potatoes, and it absolutely delivered. A New Orleans classic brought back to life on Veterans Boulevard in Metairie. The restaurant is located where the old Daquiri and Creams used to be. I do recommend a reservation because it was pretty busy on a Saturday evening. We sat at the bar while we waited for our table to be set up. My mother wanted a chocolate martini, and the bartender went above and beyond to make one for her and she loved it. Once we were seated, our waiter was absolutely amazing. He was so friendly and it was nice to meet a fellow local resident and reminisce about the old days. For the appetizers, we had the stuffed artichoke, crab dip, dipping bread, and the crabcakes. Thinking it couldn't be the one I used to go to 30 years ago I looked them up and sure enough they are carrying on the tradition of the original crazy Johnnie's. So happy. Stopped in on the second day here. Glad I did. Went around lunchtime and the parking lot was pretty full but I found a spot up front. Sat at the bar since I was eating alone. I was greeted by just about everyone I saw. Quick look at the menu and I ordered the bbq shrimp and of course the steak sandwich. One knock I will give them is I ordered tea and they were out. So I ordered lemonade. There were out. Settled for a Barq's. That ain't really settling but I didn't want soda. And water wasn't gonna cut it. So on to the bbq shrimp. Huge prawns. About 6 of them. Easy to peel. They come with French bread to dip. Very tasty. The sauce leaned more into a bbq sauce flavor which I usually don't like but I absolutely didn't mind. These were on point. Then the steak sandwich. I remember back in the day the meat was cubed but the way they cut it is fine. And they still had the steak sauce they used back then. So good. If I had remembered I would have done without the sauce that comes on it so I could just have the steak sauce but it was fine. So good. Worth the visit. So our wildest dreams came true and we have a new location of Craxy Johnnie's! They have been crazy busy so the service has been about as good as can be expected with such crazy hungry crowds. The ambiance of the new joint just isn't as comfortable as the old spot as it is far more of a modern industrial vibe mixed with the old daquiri bar energy that used to be here. Crazy Johnnie's has some nice filet mignon and prime rib po boys for lunch and always good steaks. They really used to offer a lot of value for what you got but the new location is about market rate these days so it is more expensive. The only big "beef" I have with them is that I would say they have some work to do on their menu items outside the steak and their filet mignon poboy. I tried the burger and it just wasn't very good. I tried the crawfish etouffee and many of the vegetables were raw or undercooked. I tried the gumbo and it was the worst gumbo I've ever had in Louisiana. Most of these issues can likely be attributed to the fact that they have been slammed since their initial recent opening. I think the old advice of waiting about six months to let a restaurant break in is a good suggestion. Now all the steak items are fantastic so you can certainly get those. The crazy potatoes are some very good examples of how to do some tasty things with potatoes. I'm also a big fan of their steak sauce and have been known to even put it on my crazy potatoes. They also offer seafood and other changing options. You generally get good service but not as good as you did at the original. I've been for both lunch and dinner and both have been jam packed so hopefully things normalize over the next few months to give them some breathing room to catch up. Overall I would say for now just get a steak or the filet poboy. read more

This was my favorite restaurant growing up, so I was beyond happy to see it back. I did not have time to sit down, so I ordered it to go. Even then, the vibes were amazing. It felt like a chill neighborhood bar where you can actually enjoy good food and have real conversations with friends. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted by the friendliest staff. They opened the door for me, asked how they could help, and immediately made me feel welcome. Everyone was cracking jokes, super personable, and genuinely happy to be there. We ended up talking for a while, and I later found out that one of the people I was chatting with was actually the owner. Hearing his story and how they brought the restaurant back made the experience even more special and honestly made my night. When I got home, it was finally time for what I had been waiting for. I ordered the filet mignon po'boy with crazy potatoes, and it tasted just as amazing as I remembered. The meat was incredibly tender and full of flavor. The only thing I wished was that they had packed some of their sauce to go. The crazy potatoes were also great, perfectly seasoned with just the right amount of butter. Arrived at 6:40pm on Saturday with a party of 6, was told about 30-45 minutes. We didn't sit at our table for almost an hour later. They allowed other 2 and 4 tops to sit and then asked another table to get up and move to accommodate us. The waiter acknowledged after passing a couple of times and would be back to take drink orders. We did drink and asked to order appetizers at the same time. Our drinks came out about 15 minutes later and our appetizers right behind them. Our salads came out and then no later than seconds later, our steaks. The crab cakes were overcooked and topped with a sauce that was not on the menu or told to us by the waiter. The salads were overflowing. The BBQ shrimp tasted either overcooked or reheated. They were mushy and had an unpleasant, almost spoiled flavor. My blackened redfish was dry, hard, and also seemed as though it had been reheated. The staff graciously replaced the shrimp with crab au gratin, but it was so salty that neither my wife nor I could eat it. It, too, had a flavor that made us question its freshness. The two bright spots of our visit were the staff, who were exceptionally friendly, attentive, and apologetic throughout the experience, and the Crazy Potatoes, which were excellent. I want this place to do well. It has been a long time coming for this restaurant to come back and I don't want to come here and bash them. There does need to be a few little changes so I have some constructive criticism for that. We came here during lunch a couple of months ago. It was not packed. We were handed paper menus with a limited selection to choose from -- which I think is the way to go! I think gradually adding items to the menu as the chef works through the trials/errors is a good approach instead of having a huge, overwhelming menu. Now with that being said, after we ordered our food and had it delivered, the people next to us had ordered a ribeye, which was not on our menu - and what my husband prefers to eat steak-wise. Our menu had the filet on it - which I prefer so I happy at least. I did let the waitress know and although she didn't let us know she was correcting the issue, I did see her talk to the hostess and see the hostess sifting through her stack of paper menus at the podium. Back to the food. We ordered the dipping bread for apps. So, this needs to be worked on for sure. You get 7 pieces of bread for - essentially - a bowl of dip. I am sure the point is to use it as a dip for your sandwich, but it is honestly a waste. Either shrink the bowl of dip or bring more bread. Another idea if is to sell it as a side of sauce for the poboy if that was really the reason behind the giant bowl. The Crazy potatoes are not quite as good as they were in the 90s. But I know yall are working on that. They were still tasty. The poboy was good, but I thought it was odd that the waitress did not ask us how we wanted our steak cooked? I should have asked and maybe the reason is simple - they are all cooked medium for the poboy because it's on a poboy and that's how they did it before or maybe it was to limit added stuff for the chef. I don't know but it wasn't really that bad. I do like the new clean space and some outside seating. The parking lot is on the smaller size, as is the restaurant. There are both ramps and stairs. Also, a somewhat long bar if you wanted drinks, plus TVs. I want this place to succeed! Keep moving forward, we are rooting for you! read more

What can I say? Welcome back! Crazy Johnny's if you've never been before. It's a fresh new experience and if you have it's the same. I've actually come here twice. The first time was just okay. The second time was a drastic improvement I believe since the crowds died down. They were able to focus more on the flavor and a good way. The steak is tender and the potatoes were delicious and I really enjoyed the sandwich. The first time was just okay with that. Second time was the chef's kiss. Nothing will taste the same as it did probably 10 years ago. I don't even remember but it sure is close. The ambiance Is upgrade 100%. It's a very nice modern setting that you can't help but enjoy. Last night, I was genuinely excited to return to Crazy Johnnie's in Metairie after hearing it had reopened following a decade-long closure. Over 30 years ago, during my college years, I frequently ate at Crazy Johnnie's and hoped to relive some of those fond memories. Unfortunately, the visit failed to meet expectations. I ordered the filet mignon poboy which comes with a side of their signature "Crazy Potatoes". While the service was friendly and the hostesses welcoming, the food itself was disappointing. As the attached photo shows, the poboy arrived sitting in a pool of butter--so much so that the bread was saturated before I even picked it up. The crazy potatoes, which I remembered fondly, were completely soggy from the butter runoff. What should've been a tasty and nostalgic meal ended up being heavy, greasy, and poorly executed disappointment. I appreciate the effort to bring back a local favorite, but hope they consider reworking their recipes. Right now, it's butter overload. read more

What a trip back in time but in a modern, updated experience. I hadn't eaten here since the early 2000s and was sad to learn about its demise in 2014. But like many locals I was surprised to hear about a proposed comeback and grand opening so you know I had to go and try it. I went for lunch on Sunday with a limited menu starting with a cup of seafood gumbo, and then the filet mignon sandwich with a side of Crazy Potatoes. Everything was on point with seasonings and flavor. Service and wait time was excellent for a place that just opened so I can only see it getting better as everyone hits their stride. We tried this place it's kind of a train wreck, the menu is not great only one steak choice or prime rib the oysters are not in the menu and the service was off, our waitress kept chatting with customers and not taking care of the guests. They brought out all our food at once from chargrilled oysters, salad and entrees, we ordered medium well steaks they were definitely medium rare and waitress did not see if we needed refills or condiments, steak has weird flavor and oysters are missing something!
