Class Mexican cuisine that opens late. We came on a late Wednesday night and there's a good amount of people seated around the bar. It was world cup match day so a good vibe throughout the place. I've been to a few "la tapatias" it seems over the years, found out there's 2 on Richmond somehow. Chips and salsa were decent, nothing special. Some of the chips were a bit overcooked and has that burned taste. I ordered the carne asada and while it looked good with a decent portion size, It was a bit tough to chew.. the sides (rice, guac, salsa + beans) were good, but the meat I had to cut into smaller bites.. I mean it was good but not great. I've had a lot better just in Houston. We finished the night w/ some desserts which was pretty good. I'll definitely have to try the margs next time as they were strongly recommended. I also notice they have happy hours as well. Price/value was okay, the carne asada was about $26, definitely prices have gone up over the years but not surprising. Overall, solid spot for late night Mexican food if you're in the area. First time I saw this La Tapatia Woodhead wondering why Woodhead. Ah it's the cross street. Because there are two La Tapatia restaurants on Richmond. That was my first La Tapatia I went. This is the third one. I was here to meet my friends for brunch but I arrived late. Because of their efficient work culture, everyone finished their meals and left. Hahaha. I came to dine solo. I didn't know this La Tapatia doesn't serve menudo at all. I was a little disappointed because the one on Richmond by Chimney Rock has exactly what I wanted. This was an okay place. My husband ordered our table tortas, and jokes aside, they were good and large, you know, like a torta. Now, the bad part was that the fries were meh. And I'm still not sure why they came with French fries, as other restaurants usually serve rice or beans as the side, but hey, what do I know. Waiters were kind and polite, but after a while, they ignored us, so my drink wasn't refilled. I feel like she was overwhelmed by our table, because it was all on one ticket. The other food variety available looked okay, but I wasn't sure if it was worth coming back for in the "I must return" sense. Just ok. I was really expecting tons of flavors for how authentic this place looks. I was happy to see a menu where I could get flautas as an entree but the chicken had absolutely no seasoning or marinade. Just basic bland chicken. The rice wasn't my fave either it was very bland. My new girlfriend lives around the corner and suggested this place so we tried it for our first time. I got the El Musico combo and it was a lot of food but even more important than the quantity, everything tasted great! My girlfriend got the Tampiquena combo and she said the flavor was on point. The only slight negative she mentioned was that the skirt steak could have been a little more tender. I forgot to take pics but the plates are huge. The chips and green salsa are 10/10. It was also pretty cold on a December evening and we saw a lot of people eating some kind of huge soup so I'm guessing that's pretty good too. read more

I can always count on this place to provide me with a hearty meal and a very nice staff. The menus is extensive and sometimes it's hard to pin down what I want at any given time, because I always find something else that I want to try. From the home made corn chips used in the Nachos la Tapatia, to the meat sauce atop the Enchiladas de Fajita, to the red chipotle sauce used on the Pechuga al Chipotle, they are all dishes that have me coming back for more. I really like the chipotle sauce, in the dish that I like, it not the commercial mayo based sauce; it's the real deal red sauce. My neighborhood tex-mex spot, this is a classic, casual spot where the service is impeccable and the menu is large. It feels like places like this were more common 10-20 years ago, honestly, but if any of them stuck around I am glad this is one of them. While I wish they had a few more vegetarian choices for my own benefit, there's no denying they do all the standards and they do them quite well. The service is always friendly and attentive. The chicken mole enchiladas are my mom's favorite dish in Houston when she comes to visit, and I have a fondness for the breakfast and for the tostadas and street tacos. We gave this location a second chance. The first time coming here, we were very disappointed with this bartender/waiter as he was very condescending and rude....the second time, we honestly came back for convenience as this restaurant is down the street from us. We somehow got the same waiter/bartender, but he made it very known that he didn't want to serve us.l or even great us. His attitude made us very uncomfortable, I don't understand why because we don't personally know him, but it somehow felt personal, and he literally tossed/threw our food and drinks to us (and our check when we weren't even done). I can't speak for all of the employees at this location, but this individual made us have the absolute worst experience ever at any establishment in Houston.
