I was driving through the area and spotted BA.M Concina on a whim--thank goodness I did! This spot has quickly become one of my favorite hidden gems for breakfast, brunch, and lunch in Houston. They specialize in fresh, hearty Mexican-inspired plates that feel homemade but elevated, and everything I tried hit the mark perfectly.
I went with the Torta de Bistec and it was outstanding. The telera bread was toasted to golden perfection with just the right crunch on the outside while staying soft inside. The beans were creamy and well-seasoned, the thinly sliced bistec was juicy and packed with flavor (perfectly marinated and grilled), and the whole thing came loaded with fresh toppings. I appreciated that it didn't come drowning in sour cream like some places do--kept it cleaner and let the other flavors shine. The crinkle-cut fries on the side were fried to an ideal crispy-toasty level with great seasoning. No soggy fries here!
To wash it down I grabbed an Agua Fresca de Fresa (strawberry lemonade). It was refreshingly balanced--sweet but not syrupy, with bright strawberry flavor and a nice tart finish. Exactly what I wanted on a warm day.
They serve two house salsas with the meal: a green and a red. The green was solid and fresh, but the red stole the show--deeper flavor profile with a solid kick of heat that built nicely without overpowering the food. I ended up using a lot more of the red.
The menu looks fantastic overall. I saw several brunch favorites that I'm already planning to try next time: chilaquiles (both red and green), breakfast tortas, huevos rancheros, and some creative lunch options like different tortas, burritos, and plates with carne asada. They also have a nice selection of aguas frescas and horchata that looked super fresh. Portions are generous and prices feel very fair for the quality.
The space is cozy and intimate with limited indoor seating, so it's best for quick bites or small groups. Parking is shared out front, so you might need to circle once or two during busier times, but it's worth it. The service was warm and attentive even during my random stop-in.
If you're in the mood for authentic, flavorful Mexican breakfast or lunch done right, stop by BA.M Concina. I'll definitely be back soon--probably for those chilaquiles! Highly recommend.
Pro tip: Come hungry and try the house salsas--you'll want extra of the red! read more
