This review is based on takeout. My wife met a friend for breakfast and brought me back a Bacon Avocado Benedict. This was exceptional. It was served with a salad and roasted potatoes. It's really hard to say what I enjoyed more. The sides were on par and actively competing with the star of the show; perfectly poached eggs, BACON, creamy fresh avocado, toasty English muffins, buttery/tart hollandaise. I remember this breakfast years after. My wife and her friend enjoyed the place too. I have attempted to take my wife here for breakfast since. I didn't want to wait; they have always been full whenever I have tried to eat here. It is assuredly a testament to their quality if there is always a wait. Still I'll go back home and cook my own breakfast rather than wait. However, I do truly look forward to going to this restaurant and sitting down for a meal. You need to stop here if you are on Maui! Awesome little breakfast spot in Kula, we have been to Maui once before but completely missed this place. We knew we wanted a few pastries to go because we were about to start the Road to Hana. I ordered the sticky bun (AMAZING) and my husband got the ham and cheese quiche (also excellent). We split a chocolate cornet (it was good but not as good as the other items). We also ordered juices in to go cups and it was great to take on our trip. I am glad we arrived at 8:20, right before it got crowded with the breakfast rush. Breakfast on the patio (awesome view) begins at 8:30 and by 8:28 we were no longer the only car in the tiny parking lot. I'm sure this is a popular place! read more

It's high up on a hill in the middle of nowhere, but you already know that. They were out of water in the water jug when we got there, so I told our waitress and she brought the jug over to the faucet and filled it up with room temperature tap water. Mmmmm. I had a nicoise salad because I always have a nicoise salad if it's on the menu. It was good. My lady had some kind of sandwich and a crepe. This place is well known in Kula, best pastries in town. We ordered with Charlie- who was sweet kind and efficient. I must agree, the pastries taste like the ones in France and are very authentic Ambiance was gorgeous and serene: outside seating with a large jacranda tree outside and a wrought iron gate that says LA Provence, with vine over hangings. The view is nice- seating is all outside with the view from Kula looking down the mountain. It seemed like the perfect place to have a pastry and coffee. I have to preface this review that the rating is based off of a bad customer service experience my husband/grandma/my mom and I had. I WANT TO MAKE IT CLEAR. THE FOOD IS EXCELLENT HERE, but the service and attitude needs some work. The Pastries ordered and recommendations: 1) Lilikoi tarte- SUPER BOMB and creamy and buttery all at the same time 2) Pain au chocolate/chocolate croissant- not as buttery as i expected it and the chocolate was flaky and dry tasting- not creamy 3) Almond tarte- DEF DEF DEF must get- sweet and buttery and delicious with a slight hint of almond taste 4) Blueberry scone- was good in thought but was actually the worst of all the pastries- and I love scones- it was jus really dry 5) Apple tarte/ Tarte aux pommes- not super sweet, which i loved, gooey but the crust on the bottom help together nicely and it didnt fall apart- another highly recommended 6) Croissont aux amandes- better than the chocolate one and flaky with a bit of crunch Getting to our experience here- went on a Saturday around 10am. Charlie took our order he was sweet but the place was packed and really busy. After he packed out box of delicious pastries we opened it up to start eating them and then my grandma realized that they forgot her scone. My husband/grandma and I went back in where Charlie was helping another customer making an expresso. There we met Amanda who barely made eye contact with us as she counted money. She then asked us what we needed to which I told her that Charlie forgot our scone which we ordered. I said " He forgot the scone we ordered." She was SUPER RUDE and told us, yea i cant help you with that right now cause im busy. To which she continued and said: "ME, i didnt forget your scone." I quickly said, i said I didnt say you did. To which she starkly answered: "you said me." Which makes no sense grammatically. For her to mishear i said ME, my original sentence would have had to have been "Me forgot your scone." Which i clearly said HE. My husband then stepped in and corrected her after she gave us attitude and said, "She never said you did." She rolled her eyes and walked away. We all looked at her in disbelief because if you have been here, the register and the scone tray are less than 3 feet away from each other. Also the statement she was getting all upset about couldnt have been true because that doesnt make any sense grammatically! As my family and I stared at the scone which she could have easily grabbed, she went up to Charlie loudly (even though I knew she was trying to be discrete)- she said loudly something along the lines of- "These people over here said you didnt give them their scone. Make sure you make them pay for that." She then walked away where we waited for 5-10min for Charlie to make 3 expressos for another customer (at no fault of his) to grab our scone which was literally 2-3 feet away from Amanda as she just stood there counting money. Like how hard is it to ask Charlie about the scone and get us the scone? Anyways- food is great here- especially for a morning breakfast date. But Amanda really ruined our experience here and left a bad taste in our mouth. read more

Great little place. We were there very early after seeing to sun rise at Haleakala they were not serving hot breakfast yet, it starts at 8:30am. So we got 2 different quiches and a scone... They were the best I've ever had, I can only imagine how good a full meal would be. The owner is French and he does all the baking. Look for this place. Its not easy to find but well worth it. Be mindful of their hours, they are not traditional restaurant hours. But again well worth going. read more

This man claims to be a French pastry chef. HE IS! His croissants, tarts, and quiches are as good as we've had in France. His dough is remarkable - it shows great pastries can be made even in upcountry Maui. His lunch menu is pretty ordinary, very limited, bordering on boring. But the display case is filled with great breakfast treats, so come for the pastries, not salads or sandwiches. Driving this far up country just for a pastry is a bit much. But if you're heading in this direction (even to/from Mt. Haleakala) consider the detour. There's nothing to match it on Maui. Don't believe the "Wait to be Seated" sign. We did, for five minutes, then finally went inside, where we were told the sign only applies for lunch and dinner. And the way we knew that was...?? read more

Beautiful setting, fantastic service but the chef must have been off the day we came cause my dish was completely inedible. I don't usually leave bad reviews so giving three stars hurts but my crab and spinach crepe was an epic fail. The only reason by I gave it three stars instead of two is cause I loved the locals greens and Illinois balsamic vinaigrette. The waitress describes the crepe as creamy with bechamel sauce and you can see in the photo what I received. Frozen spinach and crab tasted like it came straight the package. I asked for a side of sauce and I got a lump of roux. My date's prime rib sandwich was not much better. Chucks of fat, dry and unseasoned. Pastries were also pretty dry so better when dipped in coffee. I'll go back and give it one more try but not in any rush. read more

I've been here a few times for breakfast. You won't find the most extensive of menus, but everything they have is and/or looks great. Their bennies best those at Charlie's (and that's saying something. What really sets this place aside is its location. You wouldn't expect finding such a place in the heart of rural Upcountry and one could drive past it dozens of times without noticing it. The location makes this restaurant intimate. Hooooooly moly! This place is goooood! I ordered the spinach and crab crepe (highly recommended), and it blew my mind. The crepe was extremely soft and abundant flavor. For the price of around $10, you get a good size crepe and a salad. The salad had a special house dressing that was very tasty. Everything was extremely fresh. I believe that La Provence uses local produce. If your in the mood for french type of pastries, such as: tarts, quiche, crepes, and etc... your going to have to make a stop here. read more

When it was my turn to order in line, the cashier/owner guy smirked at me at me and scoffed/laughed. Then he turned around, washed his hands which was right by the register. We found ourselves upcountry in Kula and decided to have breakfast at La Provence. This adorable restaurant is nestled high above the tourist laden Maui coastline, and because of its location temperatures are mild here with refreshing breezes that cool the air around you. Once you enter through the flower laden arch it's like being transported to a little slice of heaven and you forget all about the car repair shop across the street because you are sitting on a beautiful patio with sweeping views of Maui laid out before you. There is a case full of freshly baked pastries, though we were told by a regular that you must arrive early because the best items usually sell out by 10:00 am. The menu offers a variety of crepes and eggs benedicts along with potatoes au gratin and a salad for brunch, as well as their quiche du jour and salad. We went inside to grab a few pastries to enjoy with coffee while we waited for our food to arrive. We had some sort of pastry that appeared to be comprised of layers of phyllo dough, butter, and caramelized sugar, it was so light and flaky and a perfect accompaniment to the coffee. The apricot tart was sinfully delicious, each piquant bite of fresh apricot was in pleasant contrast to the smooth and creamy custard beneath it. We ordered the mahi mahi eggs benedict, the veggie eggs benedict, and the crab and spinach crepe. Everything that we ordered was excellent, but they seem to particularly excel at eggs benedict. The crab and spinach crepe was tasty, but you have to really be a fan of spinach to enjoy this dish as it was packed full of the leafy greens. My dad really enjoyed his veggie benedict which had roasted eggplant, zucchini, and bell peppers that were seasoned with herbs de provence topped with a perfectly poached egg and a light drizzle of hollandaise. The mahi mahi eggs benedict is now my favorite benedict of all, generous chunks of mahi mahi were lightly seasoned with herbs de provence that were in perfect harmony with the poached egg and hollandaise sauce. The potatoes au gratin were quite rich and I was glad to have the salad which was dressed with an acidic vinaigrette to help cut some of the fat in this dish. We also had the best cup of coffee of our trip while at La Provence, it is a special roast made for the restaurant by Maui Oma and since they have fresh beans delivered each week let me just say you are in for a caffeinated treat. On our next trip I think that I'll buy a few of their croissant sandwiches and their pastries to enjoy as a picnic lunch. Our waitress was extremely friendly, though because she is the only server you will find that there is a bit of a wait during your meal. Don't get upset or irritated if you find your meal is taking longer than usual, remember that you are on Maui and relax and take in the views and the cool fresh air. Just remember to bring cash with you as they are cash and check only, no credit cards my friends. I swear this place is magical, I've found my new favorite restaurant in Maui. read more

I should be giving La Provence a two star rating because of how bad they treat their customers. There isn't enough staff, so you're constantly waiting around, they frequently run out of many menu items and they only take cash, but their eggs Benedict is amazing. The 3 stars are because of how good their different Benedicts are. They only serve them on Sat and Sunday (annoying), but in all fairness, they are awesome. So is their coffee btw. If you require good customer service & accommodating staff, this place is not for you. If you are willing to deal with such inconveniences and love eggs Benedict, go ahead and make the trek to Kula. read more

A real gem in Maui. I owe Yelp! For helpings find this place. We were on our drive from Lahaina to visit the Church if the Holy Ghost and the Volcano State Park.... Feeling a bit hungry, we flipped in Yelp! And this was on the top of the list. How could we say no to a French Bistro? We couldn't. We walked in and noticed it was cash only... Got back in the car and drove 3mi back to longs to get cash. Came back and the Maui Gods were smiling on us. No wait and got a nice table that overlooks the valley. We tried 4 items on the menu and they were all Fantastic. We split a lemon crepe afterwards and were all in a state of bliss. I have only walked out of one movie (Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome) and honestly cannot recall leaving a restaurant, especially one with a great brunch reputation, without eating... until now! Went there Sunday around 11 AM, our 2nd visit, despite remembering how long we waited when we visited back in February. I will not bore you w/ the minute-by-minute torture, here are the low lights - fly's by the dozens, inattentive waiter, disingenuous apologies for the wait, and no apparent regard for their reputation. After a 20 minute wait, during which we had coffee and croissants which we picked up in the shop when we arrived to ride out the wait we knew was coming, we were informed it would be another 15 minutes before they could TAKE OUR ORDER! (said with a straight face) Yelpers, can we start a revolution?! Give this establishment the rating it deserves. I have been to France and to Provence. This level of poor service has nothing to do with either. Only on sitcoms and movies should people trade witty banter while being ignored by the staff of a dusty roadside diner then pay for the pleasure. We had brunch here on Sunday and oh my gosh, it was divine. I had some concerns about service having read several Yelp reviews before going, but the service was as good as the food. Our server was friendly and efficient and the staff inside were just as helpful. It seems they have brought on more people since some of the reviews were written. I had the eggs benedict with tomato and bacon... it is melt in your mouth good. It came with a side of Kula greens which tasted like they were picked that morning. My fiancé had the strawberry crepes and loved them... I had to fight for bite! :) Also, I love good coffee and my latte was rich and made to perfection. The setting, on the deck of this cute little cottage, is just perfect for brunch. The views are beautiful and it just has that relaxed upcountry vibe. The pastries we saw at the register while paying looked too good to pass up so we took some to go - a blueberry scone, which was good but not the best I've had, and cinnamon raisin sticky buns, which were to die for! Important things to keep in mind are they only accept cash or check (there is an ATM at the gas station next door) and they are only open Weds - Sun 7 - 2, except for dinner on the 2nd and 4th Friday of the month (with reservations). The hours are a bit complicated... lunch W-F 8:30 AM to 2:00PM (not sure what they serve 7-8:30... pastries perhaps?) and brunch Sa-Su 11:30AM to 2:00PM. We stopped in for coffee after the farmers markets in Kula and were so glad we did! This place seems like a hidden gem (or it seemed hidden because we drove up from Kihei). Awesome outdoor atmosphere with friendly service. They were out of goats cheese and strawberries which was okay - I got lilikoi crepes and to be honest not sure why - I don't usually like crepes or lilikoi - BUT THESE WERE AMAZING. Seriously people - you have crepes covered! Small menu but who needs a big one when you can offer a smaller menu and nail it! After a lackluster start, with no one around to seat us and an ADD-riddled server that actually left us while we were mid-order, this cute little place up on the hill redeemed itself darn fast. The coffee was fantastic (we had a café au lait and a cappuccino), the food arrived quickly, and every bite was scrumptious! The benedicts are to die for and the lump crab crepe was super fresh.
