This is a charming and well-run neighborhood bistrobin Maui's Up Country in Kula (about 40 minutes southwest of the Kahalui airport, off of State Route 37). The food is excellent, and they serve HUGE portions at prices that aren't "cheap", but are fair for what you get! Even the Kula Salad was huge, colorful and delicious, with locally sourced vegetables that are so fresh, it tastes like they were just picked! One of the many great desserts was a POG Tropical cake, with not only the classic POG juice flavors, but coconut and whipped cream, to book! The place was hopping (and also includes a popular outdoor patio), but service was fairly good, attentive and efficient! We would return in a heartbeat if we got up to that area again! I've always wanted to check out this little town and restaurant and never find the time. Up In high country and in evening really cooler. We sat outside right away at very basic picnic tables. Very kind staff that were conversational. There is no alcohol there but suggested we could go nearby and buy a bottle of wine or something which we did. No corkage fee but provided glasses. We got the meatball app and the bread plate. They were good but the compound butter served with the bread was good enough to finish eating on my leather shoes!! Daughter ordered lobster Mac and cheese per my mention of its traction on Yelp. Boyfriend got the chicken parm. She loved the lobster but Mac was not as she expected, more of a slightly cheesy pomodoro cream sauce. He liked the chicken but he's from an east coast Italian family and wasn't too impressed. Neither finished their pasta at all. My wife ordered the ribeye medium and it came with a basic mash potato and veg that was a bit overcooked. Steak was beyond medium but as big as her head!! I ordered the meatball with spaghetti and mushroom sauce. I wasn't thinking as we ordered the meatball app!!! Our nice server said while placing it in front of me it was the heaviest dish! Wish I knew. They have very basic pasta varieties so that's why I stuck with spaghetti. This was huge and quite good. Frankly my all day sauce and honestly my short version with mushrooms and my meatball recipe is better than theirs. Family tradition. The meatballs were big but obviously some filler. So we went home with a lot of leftovers from the spaghetti and steak. Like more than half of each. We should have just shared the steak as it was bigger than the ribeye we share at home. Overall I highly recommend that everyone get off the beach dining places that all serve different versions of the same thing and go upcountry and try this! Holy Moly Lobster Macaroni!! I love Kula Bistro. It's tucked away up country but worth the drive or a convenient place to stop when coming down the hill after visiting Haleakala. I've been a handful of times and have always had a good experience. We stopped in last night for dinner. Walk ins only- no reservations. We were seated right away for just the two of us. If you have a larger party you may need to wait for a bit to be seated. We ordered their house salad to start. The fresh local greens were delicious. It was a generous portion that could easily serve 4 people as a side. For dinner I ordered the lobster mac. In my mind I pictured plain old Mac n cheese with lobster chunks in it (think Ruth Chris). When it got to the table my jaw dropped. A whole lobster tail was on top of some rigatoni pasta, covered in light but creamy cheese sauce. it also had spinach, bacon bits and cherry tomato mixed in. OMG SO GOOD. I was pleasantly surprised and impressed. The portion size was very generous and I had some to take home. I appreciated that the cheese was not too over powering and didn't cause any rumble in my tummy. My other half got the prime rib. Also a generous portion. It came with grilled veggies, mashed potatoes, au jus and horseradish cream. They have a giant pastry/dessert case full of yummy treats you can choose from. We took a slice of cheesecake home for dessert. Delish. It's BYOB. Bring your own beer or wine, just no hard liquor. There is a mom & pop shop just across the street with a decent wine selection. They provide glasses for you. Not sure if they charged a corking fee. Overall great experience. Huge portions, yummy food and chill but cozy atmosphere. Disappointed with additional service fees. I have gone to the Kula Bistro many times (50+) over the years. I ate there last night and was terribly disappointed because I used $200 in gift certificates and was charged an additional 3% service fee for not using cash. The gift cards were issued by the restaurant (there would be no credit card surcharge). I was told they charge 3% for all non cash transactions - even if I used gift cards issued by the restaurant. I eat there often - this is the first time a fee was charged for using their own gift card! Also, I've been charged the 3% credit card fees on two of my last three visits when I paid cash. When I questioned the staff why I was charged a fee - I was told it's a 'computer glitch' with the cash register. They brought the 3% cash back - but it seems to be protocol that the fee is automatic on all transactions (cash or credit) - hoping the guest doesn't notice. Terribly disappointed! The food was scrumptious - so flavorful and simple with good flavor combinations. Now, it has gotten a makeover and a price adjustment. It is quite a bit pricier than ever before. The sandwiches are still reasonable and delicious, but other items just seemed too pricey to venture. Service was great as always. Mama J was sweet and fun. Made in just in time before breakfast time was over. Something that has been on the list for a while but I struggle to wake up for. Cute little restaurant which was pretty spacious inside. The place was packed in the morning and parking was a bit of work to find. Very clean little cute decor for the holiday. The service was great the waitress serving us was sweet and the food came out in a good amount of time. Getting into the food pretty big portions. And presentation is well done. I got a loco moco which good the mushrooms and onions were cooked well and the gravy was good. The patty was okay for me not the most flavorful. I got a side of friend rice which was flavorful but just alright for me. Delicious, but pricy. It was $173+ for four of us, no drinks, no appetizers, no dessert. And we didn't even have the most expensive entrees. It is a lovely little place on a side road in Kula. We were lucky that it was an unusually quiet evening, so we were able to park in front and only had to wait a few minutes for a table. It's pretty inside and I was happy that there is space between the tables. They didn't try to cram in too much. The kitchen has enough work already for how many tables they have because everything is made fresh. Please note, this means you might need to wait a bit longer for your food. The menu is large. There are daily specials and a keiki menu. The staff are friendly and accommodating. The chairs are metal and I wished for something with a bit of padding as sitting on an unyielding chair was tough on a body riddled with a lot of osteoarthritis. Portions are large. I had the prime rib sandwich with skin-on, seasoned fries and pickle slices on the side. (There was another side option besides fries, but I can't remember what.) I barely finished the sandwich and needed help with the fries. (Others were happy to help out.) There was a deli case with many different kinds of desserts. Initially I had my eyes on some of the dessert offerings but after all that food, I was stuffed like a Thanksgiving turkey. It would be a great place for a date. 4.5 stars, really Three diners for lunch, not busy with ample staffing. Served two of three entrees because the third wasn't prepared by the kitchen. Prime rib dip was stringy and tough, maybe Prime Rib? My entree was an eggplant sandwich with red sauce and mozzarella, as you would expect. The eggplant was 1/2-inch thick, barely breaded, and very undercooked, with drops of red sauce. It was served with sliced tomatoes and some kind of mayo dressing. We wound up going there on July 4 because a lot of places weren't open. The food is very good and the portions are larger. I had the chicken Parmesan, which I liked the noodles could've been a bit warmer and they keep the skin on the chicken which I didn't care for I had to remove that. My partner had the lobster mac & cheese, and that was outstanding, and the spaghetti and meatballs were darn good too the other table had the Wagyu meatloaf for looked really good portions or large for entrées. I had a half salad of the house greens and veggies, and it was excellent fact it was my favorite part of the meal. Kula Bistro used to be one of our ABSOLUTE favorite restaurants, unfortunately, this is no longer the case. Recent changes have made the restaurant feel uncomfortable and unwelcoming. The quality of their food and service has also taken a noticeable turn for the worse. Prior to renovation Kula Bistro felt like you were being invited into someone's personal dining room. The restaurant had a cozy, casual and comfortable feel to it. The restaurant has since been remodeled- black interior paint with etchings in the wood paneling and lots and lots of fluorescent white light. The ambience is reminiscent of a dentist's office or an interrogation room. The lights were so bright above our table - we had to ask if there was anyway to turn them off or dim them. This place is so charming upcountry. The location, the ambiance, the menu, the dessert bar...it's all so rustic and perfect. Even the prices are reasonable for Maui. We want to love this place, but the few times we come, the experience seems to keep us away for another year. This last trip we started with some tasty looking appetizers. First, the cheese curds. Whoa! The presentation was fabulous and the salad mix it was paired with was so inventive. 10/10. Next was the Parmesan Stuffed Artichoke. It looked wild and delicious, and some of the flavors were great, but the actual artichoke was inedible. I'm no artichoke connoisseur, but it seems like the bar for any dish is being able to chew and swallow it. This was like parmesan cactus tobacco...we had to keep spitting it out. For our main dish, we ordered the Lamb Meatballs. We love trying meatballs to see how they rate (Casanova's being #1 on the island, or Rao's from the frozen section.) These weren't as bad as the artichoke, but close. We got through about half before we tapped out. They tasted like they just balled up hamburger meat and cooked it. No seasoning or flavor and definitely not soft like lamb meat normally is. The waitress was very inattentive. We had to seek her out after 20 minutes of waiting for our check. We heard more than once the servers talk about how busy they were, but there were also a lot of waitstaff on the floor. The POG bar and dessert bar are great. read more

I already had the lobster mac & cheese on my mind and we ordered another pasta dish. scallop and shrimp pomodori, which comes with penne pasta, I was happy that I was able switch out the pasta to spaghetti since the mac & cheese came with penne, we would be penne' out. hehe. I wanted another pasta. The food came out, the other half and I shared both this dishes, of course we had to snapped our pics before we digging in. I love how the scallops and shrimp are grilled instead and not cooked together. Loved the spaghetti noods are al dente. I wish they carry angel hair pasta, ( my favorite!) Our group enjoyed our meals. One of the best in Maui this far! One had the Coconut Shrimp. Another had the Salmon Salad. My love ordered the Bistro Pasta Special and raved about it all afternoon. I ordered the Turkey Avocado Panini. It came on their homemade focaccia which was delicious! For dessert we tried the Butter Pecan Cheesecake. YUM!!! Found this restaurant on a whim on Yelp and we were pleasantly surprised with their service, food and desserts! We flew in from O'ahu to go to the alpaca farm and stopped here after to grab a bite before checking into our hotel. Can I just say that their entrees are BIG, perfect for sharing! We didn't know this at the time of ordering and each ordered an entree in addition to their crab cakes appetizer. I ordered the burger and added mushrooms and onions with ceasar salad and my husband ordered the meatloaf. Food was really good and in order to have room for dessert, my husband saved his meatloaf dish and helped me to eat the burger and salad. Their spumoni sphere was delicious and we ordered their espresso creme brulee to go. If you are spumoni lovers like we are, you must have it. Our waiter was great too; he had some fun farm stories to tell us and he had jokes too lol This place is truly a neighborhood gem and we will certainly come back. Highly recommend! read more

do not miss this place! we happened to be checking out the pumpkin patch in kula and ai recommended kula bistro we almost decided to go somewhere else but we're so glad we stayed. ai only highlighted the appetizers being favorites but our waitress recommended the kalua pork panini. we're still amazed days later by how delicious it was. we genuinely believe the panini alone should be added to the must have list in maui. the portions are huge, menu affordable, staff was very friendly. there's a lot of chickens outside where they seat you if you choose to sit out but we enjoyed watching them. i cannot emphasize how good the food was and I would love to try more items off the menu next time but we would for sure get the panini again. we would fly back to maui just for this if we could. read more

Stopped by this cute cafe after seeing the breathtaking sunrise at Haleakalā summit! Breakfast was mandatory after being up so early and this place didn't disappoint! Customer service was great & bathroom was clean! The food was even better of course- we ordered the Garden Veggies Frittata which was huge- definitely will have left overs and great for sharing too! It was delicious. Also ordered fried Rice, Eggs and Portuguese sausage which was very tasty! This bistro also has pies!! Couldn't resist trying out the Coconut mint oatmeal pie! All was very good and definitely will visit when I'm back in Lahaina. read more

After hiking my boyfriend told me to pick a place for lunch.. it's either go back to Kihei or find something near the mountainside .. initially after finishing the hike I had told my boyfriend I wanted a nice juicy burger after that hike.. so looking around yelp although this place was more known for Italian food and it was close and needed to carb load we decided to check it out.. let me tell you, this little gem ruins me for what I know as good Italian food back home!! We pulled up to this place and the back parking lot was almost full.. there was one parking spot left and we pulled into it.. walking in we were greeted and taken to the seats by the window.. this place has cute decor inside.. Absolutely love the decor inside.. Our server Benny welcomed us and talked through what they have since this was our first time there.. very cool guy, major Kudos to Benny!! Trust me when I say this place will not disappoint you. They have huge food portion too so you can share or take home.. Knowing that they have huge food portion we decided to go with the garlic bread, Mac 'n cheese lobster tail, and chicken Alfredo.. their garlic bread is something else! I couldn't stop eating their garlic bread and butter.. you can see from the image not only does the bread have flavor but so does the butter.. it's not like just any ordinary butter (like back home).. their butter was the most perfect spread to pair with.. let me tell you I loaded up that slice up bread with a great amount of their butter.. let's not forget their lobster Mac n cheese!!! Very delicious!! And that's an appetizer! Then we come to the real course.. and they weren't kidding when they said it's a huge portion.. we shared the chicken Alfredo and I'm so glad we picked this as the main course. The chicken was nice and flavorful!! My goodness I can't get over how much flavor this chicken has.. back home the chicken tasted more like rubber chicken or it's juicy but bland and that's at a high rating Italian place.. any Joo, the sauce was also nice and creamy.. overall we were very satisfied with our order.. we were so full and still have half of everything to take home.. so we decided to also order the dessert to go.. we ordered the Ube cheesecake to go!
