We tried the breakfast burritos a while back, meh is generous. Maybe they've gotten better, will have to see. More recently we tried the tamales as part of a little tamale challenge with friends. La Popular lost. You walk in and it's not clear if it's a place to order food, order cooking equipment, or neither. I'm not saying we won't try them again, and their tamales, while losing the challenge weren't bad, but yeah not a first or eighth stop on the list. read more

One must dig deeper! Located in the heart of LoDo La Popular offers up solid and tasty tamales; they are open early on week days and close at 5:30 PM. They are also open on Saturday. The tamales do have a good amount of masa compared to the amount of pork, but it is a nice overall mix which makes fine tamales. They also have green chili and pork tamales, chances are you are not going to find this mix elsewhere, usually its just green chili and cheese and the default red chili and pork. They also have a bakery, fresh tortillas, breakfast burritos and one of my best finds their Jalapeno salsa which is very spicey and pairs nicely with hot tamales. The service is quick and friendly and they will give you a tamale to try. La Popular tamales maintain their authentic flavor and home made taste that most of the larger "tamale factory's" have long lost. read more

La Popular - Street View - Mexican Near Me - Denver, Colorado

Have been getting tamales from here since I was a little girl my parents since they were kids they've only tried changing there masa recipe one other time and then changed back, Why change a good thing your masa was so flavorful in the inside saucy and tasteful. But i bought them in November and after that and the masa had no flavor ,go back to the same recipe as before yours were truly the BEST tamales around. Alot of people I know say the thing ,they've notice the change and haven't been back. So please go back to same recipe! The best tamales in town. read more

Have you ever gone to a place that is famous for something, and for some crazy reason ordered the thing they are not famous for? well, I did just that, went to La Popular, and got... a burrito. Sometimes, I wonder what is going on in my own head. Well, I got a bean and beef smothered burrito, and it was pretty good. Good red sauce on the burrito. This store is not what I expected. It is really a Mexican food warehouse that occasionally sells tamales and burritos. You can get a ton to go for a dinner, but there is no seating inside, so be prepared to take anything with you. They also have fresh made masa and corn husks for sale so you can make your own tamales. Pretty cool place, read more

My dad use to take me here as a kid and for my 1st Christmas back in Denver I just had to get their tamales. They didn't disappoint.

Just got a 2nd jar of the Garden Salsa they started carrying a while back--very good.Serrano, Habanero, Chipotle, green chiles, and red bell peppers give it a rich flavor. "Hot", but for me, just enough to make my nose start to run as I'm nearing the end of of the jar. read more

Great tamales! The breakfast burrito is good too, esp. considering it's pretty cheap. Very friendly service. The one thing I'd suggest to them: (they microwave the smothered burritos after putting shredded cheese on it, in a styrofoam container), I don't know if it's bad for you or not, but I'd prefer a different container... read more

The break fast burritos are tasty. They use a microwave quite a bit, which i find a bit strange for a place with such great reviews. Overall value is not very good. This is a take out Styrofoam business, that microwaves their food and they are charging dine in prices. read more

Well, time to go buy some pants with an elastic waistband. Holy cow is this place awesome - it's basically a mexican catering company with a breakfast/lunch bar and baked goods section (pineapple turnovers?! coconut cookies?! ALL FOR LESS THAN A DOLLAR. Good. I'm gonna need that leftover money for new fat-pants). Breakfast burritos are great, lunch burritos and tamales, too. The menu is about 3 items long - if you're expecting 12 choices for your burrito, head elsewhere - it's more or less limited to beef and beans. No seating, just take out. read more

i do not recommend the breakfast burrito. Mine had all sorts of weird, gristly meat. I couldn't even finish it and I'll eat about anything. Did I just go on an off day? Maybe...i don;t like giving poor reviews so i will try something else if i can bring myself to return. read more

This place is great. It's essentially a tamale factory in the middle of nowhere. When you walk in, there is nothing more than a counter, behind which is a nice looking employee and some steam trays. Usually there's a steel chair and a TV for you to sit in and watch, respectively, while your tamales are being gathered. They mix the masa and create their little masterpieces fresh each day, and keep them steamed, so that they are hot and moist when they fork them over. I've been to some places (many actually), where they take tamales from the freezer and then perform a long and complicated procedure involving a plastic bag and a microwave before giving your food to you. Not at La Popular. Not now and not ever. That having been said, these tamales are great as served or reheated later -- the red and the green both. read more

Oh man these breakfast burritos are good. Great to grab on the go, but I can't wait until I have more time and can get the smothered breakfast burrito The owner let us taste the green chili used to "smother" and it was heavenly. read more

Searching for a burrito on yelp, and I came across this place. I love me some tamales. Knowing there was no seating, I went in today and ordered myself a smothered beef burrito, 2 dozen tamales (1/2 each), and a bag of sweet bread. The burrito was very good. Was stuffed with beef, and had a fair amount of chili. I was stuffed after the burrito, but wanted to try at least one tamale. I had one of the beef ones (randomly) and as people said before, the masa is a bit thick, the meat a bit mushy, but the flavour is excellent. Service was friendly enough, both ladies were polite to me while there. For now a 4 star rating, might bet bumped up after a while.. read more

My family has been going here for longer than I can remember. Still the same great tasting / quality food. Thanks for being our go to tamale place! read more

We decided to venture to La Popular for lunch yesterday for what we thought would be some great authentic Mexican food. Ground beef being the only meat option for my taco was disappointing & so was the dryness of my tamale. Not to mention that it is takeout only. I won't be rushing back. read more

When I think of Tex-Mex, Mexican, and Colorado, I think of big fat burritos. But, La Popular puts a different spin on things and cranks out some dang good tamales, very traditional ones to boot. The grub is cheap, and the food comes out fresh. Just don't hold too high of expectations for the ingredient quality. Located in proximity to downtown, near breweries, entertainment, and the like, LP affords you a no-frills bite to eat or something to-go in between your drinking adventures in the Mile High City. read more

This place has the best tamales and breakfast burritos in Denver!!! It's not Saturday morning without a stop here before the trip to the mountains. Staff is friendly and quick and really care!! read more

La Popular is not a restaurant, but a famous neighborhood bakery. Never a miss, it is my Go-To spot when needing a dish for a friend's pot luck. Call in your tamale order the day before for a large order, add their green chili (over-the-top hot) and keep warm in a large crock pot before serving. If you haven't been a tamale fan before, this tender masa will win you over. read more

La Popular - Garden bounty ready for their tortillas. - Mexican Near Me - Denver, Colorado

I come here often to cure my hangover and it always works for me. I have tried a few things on the menu and my favorite so far is a breakfast burrito. I like it smothered! Very cheap and quick :) The serving size is very generous. I normally can't finish the whole thing read more

The breakfast burritos are out of this world. The ones I have had were red chili, potatoes and meat. The chili was delicious, the meat was falling apart, and the potatoes had a perfect consistency. The price was very reasonable. I will definitely come back. There is also a mexican bakery, tortilla factory (maybe?), they sell their chili and fresh tamales. Need to try all of those in the future. read more

When I'm craving a breakfast burrito I go here. So filling and fresh. Tamales are good here too and they have the most friendliest staff that are always wanting to help and they are fast if you are in a hurry. Been going here for a while and my boyfriends family has been going here for longer than I was born. I would recommend this place to anybody. read more

Great and cheap and quick green chile burritos along with fresh tortillas and sweets.

My guests were very upset also.. read more

La Popular is my go to breakfast burrito place! They are located directly across from my apartment (which is almost too convenient), they are fast, the owner is so kind, and the burritos are always amazing. The green chili has a great kick to it and all the toppings make it even better. Their hours are so convenient also because I can grab a breakfast burrito on my way to work. Thanks for being the best neighbor a girl could have!! read more

Heard business advertised on TV as best tamales in town so drove down from Aurora to try the "finest tamales in town". Bought 1 dozen of pork red chili tamales. I've eaten a lot of tamales in the past, but I've never had tamales with what appeared to be a pork spread filling!? Not shredded pork or ground pork but some sort of pureed pork filling!!! I was expecting authentic mexican tamales. What a "HUGE" disappointment!!!. Tamales in the frozen food section of your local grocery taste significantly better; at least it's shredded pork!! Don't waste your time and keep your money. This was a total ripoff! Liz H. read more

I ordered 2 dozen tamales two days ago for our Christmas Eve dinner. They took my name and said I could pick them up this afternoon. As we are walking up, they are locking the door and telling us they are sold out. We explain that we ordered, and they tell us "Sold Out". He said we should have come earlier. They had asked me what time I'd be coming to pick up the order and I said afternoon. There was no mention of arriving early. We were disappointed since we had planned our entire meal around the tamales. I have never given one star, but without ever getting to try the tamales and because we were greeted with such rudeness. We were not the only customers arriving with the same issue. read more

Since it's all take-out it should be on the cheaper side but it's not. I've had the lunch items and they taste quickly assembled. No Bueno for vegetariano. Good cookie selection, if you prefer the shortening type; unfortunately they all taste the same. read more

I was deeply disappointed with the tamales here. They were overcooked, dry and hardish. Too much masa. Shouldve never strayed away from my regular place. The smothered bean burrito I had was just ok. I had guests who agreed the tamales were not up to par as well. Edit: After digesting these they got us sick. Had the worst indigestion all night and diarrhea in the morning. Horrible. Was the only thing we ate all day so it couldnt have been anything else. Wow, ive never gotten sick from tamales anywhere. read more

I have no idea how this place got so many great reviews. I saw the rec in the Westwood for breakfast burritos and great reviews on Yelp, so tried a beef and bean burrito for lunch. Sure it was cheap, but it was a greasy gut bomb. Maybe they are only good at breakfast burritos? Never agaqin. read more

Ah, pumpkin empenadas how do I love thee? I know this place is famous for tamales but I just go here for the fruit empenadas they are amazing. read more

Just had a smothered breakfast burrito, and it was outstanding. Best BB I've had in Denver. Blows Santiago's away, but I've never understood folks' fascination with Santiago's. I cut my breakfast burrito chops in the Land of Enchantment, where amazing breakfast burritos abound, and La Popular is right up there with some of the best. I've got a half dozen of their tamales sitting on my desk. We'll see if I can hold out until lunch time. More later. read more

I cannot speak for anything else but the Tamales..........Holy Shit. I do not want to offend but I cannot describe how good theses little devils are in any other way. Grab a side of their green chili and get to work. The little angels come in a INSULATED HEAT BAG! YUP....NOT LYING. Steamy and still in the husk, you trade you hunger for burned fingers retrieving these gastro goblins. Dredge in the chilli and off you go......The best ever...thank you. Traditional and just Fucking good......bravo. read more

One of the best breakfast burritos I have ever had! I'm not a huge fan of eggs so I really love that they load these up with more potatoes too. I asked for extra cheese one day though and got charged for it but it didn't have any cheese. I was a little disappointed but I can't find a better breakfast burrito so I'll stick to the best I can get here! read more

Yummmm!!! I've been looking for a hole-in-wall tamale joint for a bit, and this hits the spot! Half-Dozen tamales and a pint of green chili sauce for like 10 buck. And the lady at the counter was really nice. read more

Not sure what all the great tamale reviews are about. But I drove a good 40 mins to pick up 1/2 doz green and 1/2 doz red. They have decent flavor but the filling is really mushy rather than the nice shredded meat that I prefer. The price is good, about $10 for a dozen. Also bought some tortillas because I read that they were awesome- no better than La Favorita imo, which I can pickup at King Soopers. My search continues...! read more

THE BEST TAMALES I have ever had. I will be a regular visitor to La Popular.

I went by La Popular today to order some empanadas for xmas. They were very happy to assist me and were quite kind. I also ordered a bean burrito and had it smothered w/ green chile. The folks sure know what they're doing when it comes to good mexican food! If you've not been there, you should! read more

You can't have the "Best Breakfast Burrito" in town, if you have to microwave it. But none the less it's not the Worst Breakfast Burrito either. If you're like me and prefer non macrowaved food, then ask them to not microwave it and you can take it home to heat it up. Much better when it's heated up in a toaster oven rather than a microwave. read more

Everything had pork in it! The Cheese Enchiladas and the beef enchiladas I ordered because I don't eat pork. Then when I tried to explain it to the lady behind the desk that I thought the cheese was a veggie and the beef had only beef in it, she just kept telling me the chili sauce has beef in it. I wasn't a fan of the ginger bread or the chocolate chip cookie. Oh yea, Tamales only come in pork too! read more

I read the reviews and I do not think people have gone there in a while. The cornmeal part of the tamale had good flavor but the filling was a red mush substance with hardly any meat... La Casita off Tejon st has much better tamales. La Chiquita or Las Americas Bakery in Commerce City have much meatier and better tasting tamales. To be fair the Sweet bread at La Popular was good. But the tamales eeew never again. read more
