We purchased a large bag of corn tortillas here - about 20 in a bag. We love corn and flour tortillas and have an affinity for all things taco - on every Tuesday. Unfortunately, the corn tortillas we purchased here were dry, stiff and difficult to fold into a taco - whether moistened them and warmed them in the microwave or lightly toasted them o a cast iron pan. We viewed their cookie and empanada cases but didn't buy any. We were focused on tortillas not sweets. Staff was nice and friendly. We won't be back. :( read more

I read about La Popular in a recent Denver Post article and thought I'd check them out. I bought a smothered breakfast burrito to go, a dozen Green Tamales, some salsa and a bag of tortilla chips. The burrito was delicious. The Tamales were great, the chips were fresh and tasty and the salsa was chunky and spicy. The proprietors were friendly and it was an overall great experience. I've been coming here for years for tamales and empanadas. A grandmother years ago would stop by this place whenever she was in town (my grandma made THE BEST tamales for Christmas!) It was a bit of a family tradition. This year was such a disappointment!!! The empanadas were about half the size of years past. They were all bread/crust with a thin spread of filling. I love this place! I live nearby and I love coming here for lunch. As other reviewers have mentioned, this place is NOT a full restaurant so you'll have to pre-plan where you are going to eat your food - maybe a drive to a nearby park or you might even resort to eating in your car. Please note: the windows and doors to the joint are darkly tinted so you can't look inside, and at first, you might be second-guessing your decision to buy food from such a shady-looking place. However, fight your urge to run away and just open the door. You will find yourself in an industrial food factory that happens to have a little counter and cash register up front. You will definitely wonder if you are in the right place, but draw your attention to the menu posted on the left side of the wall in front of you and carry on. The Smothered Bean and Cheese Burrito is the bomb! The person helping you will pop a pre-made burrito into the microwave (seriously, the microwave) - don't be afraid. She'll ask what you want on top of your burrito - I always get all the fixins added: lettuce, tomato, jalapenos, etc. She will hand over a little box that feels like it weighs two pounds. If you've got a sweet tooth - also order one of the tasty pastries they've got in the display case. I really like the pineapple empanada. Sometimes I like to get a bag of the fresh made tortilla chips, which are restaurant-quality. It's a ton of food for less than $7 and the green chile is incredible. Love love love. Sometimes I get these several days in a row. I crave that green chile sauce. If I'm crazy hungry I can just barely finish everything except maybe the last sliver. We went to LaCasita to get a dozen tamales, but on the way home we decided we wanted some empanadas. Stopped in at LaPopular as they have really good empanadas and they did. We purchased 7, 2 pumpkin, 2 apple, 2 cherry, and one raspberry. We ate the raspberry on the way home. It had a granular sugar coating and a flaky composition. It was good! Once we got home we heated (microwaved) up a pumpkin empanada. It was really good! The pumpkin puree filling is a lot different than that used in a pie filling, darker in color, a more jelly like consistency, and a little sweeter. Definitely try it. You do not know what a tamale is supposed to taste like until you have bought one fresh our of the steamer at La Popular, and eaten it as soon as you can. (It'll be physically hot.) Soft, brimming with juice, flavorful... wonderful. It's been a family ritual for years to buy a couple of dozen of these (we prefer the red chili) and each of us eating two for lunch in the car, right where we parked to go in. I never liked tamales until I first did that, about 15 years ago. Now when I eat a typical dry *thing* I smile in memory of what I should be tasting. Unfortunately, that applies just as much to La Popular's own product, after you take it home, freeze it, thaw it, and microwave it later. :-( Just not the same. Hey, their empanadas are great, too! Oh, and the reason we're eating them in the car is that this is pretty much just a dingy tamale factory, shop in front and probably, behind the wall, an assembly line of old abuelas making tamales. I go for the the Smothered beef and bean burrito / tamale combo. It's the best of everything all stuffed into a single container. Then I order one of the delicious pineapple empanada from the bakery counter and count my caloric intake for the day exceeded. Have been getting tamales from here since I was a little girl my parents since they were kids they've only tried changing there masa recipe one other time and then changed back, Why change a good thing your masa was so flavorful in the inside saucy and tasteful. But i bought them in November and after that and the masa had no flavor ,go back to the same recipe as before yours were truly the BEST tamales around. It's a rare occasion when I am not completely disappointed by what passes for Mexican food in Denver. Now, I know that there are some GREAT places to get Mexican food in our fine city, but when people mention that Blue Bonnet, or Benny's is the BEST Mexican food that they have EVER eaten in Denver- I die just a little inside... Case in point: La Popular. While it is not a Mexican restaurant per se, it is a shining example of what superb Mexican food should be. I say that it is not a restaurant because it is more of a food factory. In the back "warehouse" area they create what are arguably the best tamales in Denver along side great tortillas, and stellar Mexican pastries and cookies that can't be beat. Yesterday, I decided to swing by on my lunch break and grab a couple dozen tamales for my office to enjoy on a cool, wet day. One dozen of both the red and green, and a couple pints of green chili in tow, I headed back to the office to feast. These tamales are so impeccable because they are the perfect balance of ingredients. The masa is always moist without being soggy. Through years of perfecting their art, they have developed some sort of "golden ratio" of spicy pork filling to masa that leaves one's mouth pleading for another morsel of delicious. The filling is just spicy enough to awaken the mouth, and a bit of green chili drizzled over the top enhanced this tingle ever so slightly. My family has been buying tamales from La Popular for 15 years or so, and they have never once disappointed. But after eating there yesterday, I felt it my duty to let my fellow Yelpers know that if you haven't tried this place out then you are truly missing out on one the superior Mexican joints in town. At around ten bucks for a dozen tamales, it is a must try! P.S. La Popular lost. You walk in and it's not clear if it's a place to order food, order cooking equipment, or neither. This is a take out (not eat in) place. We stopped by to grab some tamales as we were shutting between breweries. I went ahead and sprang for a combo meal. This was a taco, a tostada, and a tamale. The tostada was fair, the taco was good, but the tamale was excellent. The flavor of the red sauce and the pork was excellent. The masa was cooked just right. And, best of all, the ratio of filling to masa was quite generous. My pet peeve about tamales is when you get full from eating masa before have a chance to really enjoy the filling flavors. The staff here was very nice. I bought a dozen mixed tamales, and a combo to try the rice and beans. I also sampled the chile which is the orange CO version, it tasted good. I have eaten many tamales in my day, and possibly this is a personal preference, but I prefer tamales with shredded meat, in stringy clumps or chunks. These have a ground pork filling, and they enjoyable to eat, the tamales were steamed proper too. Both the red and green are spicy, the green a bit more so. Their red tamales are clutch-super flavorful and hot. I usually pick the green over red, but not in this case. A factory in the back and a small store front for fresh goods. Their fresh tortillas and chips are great to take home. Their corn chips are crunchy, thick, tasty, and last a long time. My husband likes their breakfast burritos with egg, beef and potatoes. I am not a fan of beef for breakfast so I can't comment on those. Their prices are very very cheap, but there is no place to sit so be ready to take your food home or eat on the street. read more
