Really great, authentic food! For starters, you have to try the fried crickets. They were surprisingly nutty, flavorful and not too "buggy". A sneaky good authentic Mexican restaurant that is worth the stop in. The place is tucked in underneath a shop, and was easy to miss from the road. Once you walk in however, the vibrant colors can't be mistaken for anything other than an authentic Mexican place. We were quickly seated and ordered the Burrito carne asada and three al pastor street tacos. Chips and salsa were readily available while we waited for our main dishes. Food came out quite quickly and we could not be happier with the taste. The menu has a little bit of everything, and has the value that you look for with these non chain Mexican restaurants. My daughter and I stumbled upon this restaurant late one evening after a volleyball tournament. We were craving Mexican food and it was the restaurant closest to us. We were delighted with our experience. All of the food was fresh and authentic. It's very casual, family, friendly restaurant with great service. We talked to many of the other customers who are regulars and dine there often because it is authentic and reminds them of home. In addition, the two of us had dinner, a drink and dessert for less than $30. That rarely happens these days! read more

The lunch menu is especially good with several choices under $10. They have a very good lunch margarita for $2.99 to go with it. For something unique try the tamale or the empanada. read more

Fun little place in a weird spot! If you haven't been there before, I'll bet you will miss it, as it is behind and below another shop. Small place, with just a couple of dozen seats and the standard bright color decorations that you expect at a Mexican restaurant. The meme has different sections, including and authentic meals section, which we ordered from. The mole was good, but seemed a little bland to me, chips and salsa were good you can tell that the salsa was made very recently as it still had some crunch in the veges. Server was quick to take our orders,but not very talkative and we had to ask for refills on our drinks, which is my own pet peeve. Looking forward to going again, and trying different things. Restaurant is down the hill in the back. With a big sign that says Mexican Restaurant. Nice and clean inside. Nothing fancy. Waiter was very polite and did a great job. Started us off with WARM chips (nice touch) and an excellent red salsa, not spicy (wife as happy about that). Reminded me of fresh cilantro salsa. Ordered the tamale dinner. Came with 3 tamales. No sides, but there was a lot of food. Very good taste. Really liked the texture of the tamale. The chicken and the mole sauce were very good. Think I will ask for a like more sauce next time to put over the top. Other had the beef taco salad and she said it was great. She really enjoyed it. Another had the lunch special with chicken enchilada and chicken chimichanga with refried beans. Said the enchilada was good and that the chimichanga was great. Really liked the refried beans. Great flavor and tasted fresh. Definitely Would go back. If you like or love real Mexican food you should give it a try. First let me say I was visiting my Sister from California. So I'm spoiled. We where pleasantly surprised. Had lunch portion of chicken Fajitas. Just perfect seasoning, came with beans, rice, with nice presentation on a oblong plate of Pico de gallo, sour cream, guacamole. The highlight was the corn tortilla for me. Don't let the outside fool you, it's a market on top and restaurant in the lower level. Once inside you'd never know you were in a basement. Minus: The tamales had a bit of a fennel-like taste that wasn't entirely welcome. maybe it was the plantain leaves. I don't think it was the molé as it was also on the Molotes. Moreover, the chicken in said tamales was pretty tough. Now, I'm not sure if there are other options than chicken: if there are it would be for the better. Verdict: I am undaunted. Really enjoy this recent addition to the south county area. Staff is super friendly, menu is full of enticing options. This was our 4th or 5th visit and each time we've been really pleased with our service / food / drinks. The one item missing from the attached pic was our order of tamales. Super special tamales, wrapped in banana leaves...in our opinion some of the best tamales in the city. Service is always friendly and inviting. La Oaxaquena is a regular for us...if you are in South County and looking for a quality place give them a try. Well worth stopping in. I had the best burrito in my life. Here's how it started. It was 48 hrs ago I saw this event on a full stomach. I had no idea my Friday evening needed Food Truck Friday @ Tower Grove Park I was sending out last minute invites so someone can accompany me at the Friday event yesterday. A friend waited for me for two hours (some friend I am ) while I finished some errands. I was running as fast as I could. Then I asked around what people had. These two kids 9 and 6 I think. 9 y/o said she didn't enjoy the taco from another truck but the 6 y/o said the G Burrito was off the chain! Beyond a 10 rating. I said I had to test it out myself because this kid is 6! Spoke to some more people who got the quesadilla but I was hopeful for my burrito that the kid was ecstatic about. I got it. My first bite. I need everyone to stop what they are doing right now and plan a tlayuda night with your bestie at this place... the tlayuda with al pastor is now in the top ten most delicious, and comforting, dishes I have ever had. I don't believe I have had Aztecan food but now I want to go back and try numerous other entrees that are not on the menu of most American Mexican restaurants - this is a very unique menu, delicious, large portions with an affordable price point. We had two large entrees, several cocktails, and my friend had churros - and after a 20% tip we were at $100 on the nose. The al pastor is juicy and flavorful and makes the massive tlayuda (easily shared between two people - it took me three meals to get through it) incredible. The restaurant is in the basement of a small strip and there is ample parking. The service was quick and attentive and our waiter answered a variety of question for me as a celiac and provided recommendations on proteins for different entrees based on what were his favorites (I love that!). I am coming back for the tlayuda at least. Probably other things a few times over. read more

Their menu is quite authentically Oaxacan. The tamales are wrapped in plantain leaves as opposed to corn husks which is traditional for the region. The chupalines are fantastic and one of the best beer snacks in the world (don't let the fact that it is grasshoppers deter you). Their tyluda is fantastic and also huge. Unless you are hungry or a big eater, consider splitting it or expect leftovers. They speak perfect English, but you can easily order in Spanish as well as I try to speak the native language of people whenever I know it and it applies. The ambiance is very typical of a cantina and they are some of the most welcoming restaurant staff. It always feels very comfortable to be here. Everything on the menu here is good, but you should really order from the Oaxacan menu as it is Their specialty. read more

This place is kind of hidden off of Lemay it almost across the street from Melville high school, but it's in the basement. Plenty of parking. I had the Choripollo which is Chicken/ Chorizo platter. Chorizo was a little salty, but I expected that and it wasn't bad. My wife had the Shrimp platter which I couldn't taste due to food allergies, but she loved it and they didn't skimp on the Shrimp. The Guacamole was a garlicky treat, delicious. The salsa had a lot of cilantro and you can taste it which was ok and it had a little spice. Cadillac Margarita was on point. Service was spectacular.
