Margaritas

What you see is what you get reminds me of one of those old-school while in the wall bars you go at their hard day of work to get a beer, play some pool maybe get some tacos on the side. This is worth the visit, food was great spectacular service and if you like Mexican food leaning way more towards theauthentic side of Mexican food this is the place for you and yea the portions are decent

Let me start by saying that some of you may be a tad put off by the manner in which I share this review, and yet, it's my hope that you'll be able to appreciate that these are my feelings, thoughts and perspectives, and that yours may be wholly and completely different than mine in every conceivable way. Cool? Cool. We have used and heard the word "authentic" so many times, that for me, it seems to have lost whatever organic earthiness that it may have originally held. Truly, what is "authentic"? Is it a single restaurant owned by a person or family? Is it two, or three places to eat that have the same family recipes? What is "authentic", really? As I confessed, I don't really know any more. I really don't. So when I talk about Palacio's Mexican Restaurant, as much as I want to stand on a chair and espouse the virtues of "authentic" cuisine, I won't. I won't because I personally think that this place deserves "better". And even with that, one has to consider how varied tastes and preferences are from one person to the next, right? Right. Palacio's is not a place where you're likely to park you new Range Rover and feel at ease with not being able to see it. Located in Dutchtown at 4101 S. Grand, you're as likely to see people fighting across the street as you are people minding their own business. I am not speaking ill of the residents of that area, and yet, let's not pretend that there aren't some social challenges that exist either. But for me, since I am who I am, I don't worry so much about locale and "crime", race and economic disparity and social constructs. I came for the food. Sharon and I had a completely different feelings when even walking through the front door. For her, it reminded her of places she'd eaten at in Zimbabwe. For me, the pool table in your face when you walk in, along with the bar to the right, and on the day we were there, boxes and boxes on the actual bar itself, well, let's just say that I wondered if this was a place I really wanted to patronize. In other words, I can honestly say that my beloved and I had completely different expectations. Suffice to say that if decor and fine-dining are your thing, well, this is not the place for you. If real, heartfelt interaction from the staff is what you're after, well then, head on in, seat yourself and indulge. Margarita was our server, and is also the owner's daughter. She was a pleasure. Patient, solicitous and frankly, she was cool people. Anyway, Sharon just told me that this too long, so I will wrap this up. I had a burrito that rocked my world. Real steak that is cooked and seasoned in a way that let's you know that it's not Tex-mex (which I abhor), and more, the portion sizes are the kind that give you the feeling that you've gone to someone's house and they've fed you enough to hope that you'll come back again and again. Sharon had Menudo. She loves it and she raved over this one. Me, not so much, and yet, I have to admit, this was tasty to me. Again, I am not a fan, and yet, the seasoning and varied hints of it all together was quite pleasing. In the end, if you want a fare that's not Tex-Mex, and gives you the feeling and the sense that you're at someone's home and that they're trying to impress you with their food and low-key atmosphere, well, then this might be for you. If you need 5-Star cuisine and linen tablecloths, you'll not find it here. Finally, I don't talk price because for me, that's relative to the pleasure I get from the meal and for me and Sharon, it was worth every dollar. In every way.

Taco de barbacoa

This is my favorite Mexican restaurant for tortas in St. Louis. Get the torta milanesa de pollo. We come here all the time and I've never had a bad meal. My husband loves the tacos de barbacoa and menudo (on weekends). Free chips and salsa- but it is authentic salsa and spicy. This is authentic Mexican food at it's best. It's a family owned restaurant, so your server will be a member of the family. Everyone is very nice. You'll walk into the bar, but the dining area is to the left. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but if you try it, you won't regret it!

A true, authentic, hidden gem!!!! My boyfriend and I walked to this restaurant because we live nearby and were so glad we did! You walk in and there is a pool table on the bar side and tables to eat dinner on the left-hand side. We walked up to the bar to place our to-go order with a younger gentleman and had a great conversation! it seems to be a family-owned place and everyone is so friendly! Food cooked to order so it remains very fresh and can be customized to your liking! I had a burrito which was MASSIVE! Filled with rice, lettuce, veggies, steak, cheese. My boyfriend had the tacos.. they were chicken street tacos full of seasoned chicken and cilantro on top. I preferred his tacos over my burrito because I liked the chicken over the steak.. but we will be back to try some other items! They have everything from chicken to cow tongue .. check them out!

Fajitas delicious

A quaint little spot on South Grand, if you are not looking for it you could miss it. However what it's missing in notoriety it makes up for in taste. The food was good. The service friendly and prompt, and the sauces were spicy. Red and green jalapeño sauces. I prefer the red my husband the green. We got chips which were fresh and crisp. The fajitas trio beef, chicken and shrimp with Spanish rice, refried beans and a salad of tomato lettuce and avocado. The beef was tender, nice sized shrimp and plenty of red and green and yellow bell peppers. Seared to perfection. A nice change of pace. More than enough food. I took some home to finish later.

I was looking for some authentic Mexican restaurant and I'm glad that I found this one. I knew it as soon as I walked in. Packed with Mexicans which is a good sign that it's going to be authentic.I was watching a food ranger YouTube show and came across cemita and I found out that they are serving cemitas. I tried chicken cemitas and al pastor tacos and liked them. Will definitely go back.

Legit the best authentic Mexican food I've had in a while. And the service was incredible. Is you like authentic food in a tiny hole in the wall vibe, GO HERE. You won't be disappointed.

Carne Asada tacos

Food looks amazing however placing an order was not the best. The individual answering the phone was not the friendliest. Once I told him what I wanted to order, he literally hung up on me. No total or how long it would take to have the food ready. I debated on even going to get the food after that experience but decided to see if the in person communication would be better. Not at all! When I arrived , the lady at the bar literally stared at me. No greeting or how may I help you etc. so I walked up and said hello I ordered the carne asada tacos. She then said ok and brought my food out. I asked for cutlery and the cook in the back got frustrated and showed the front staff where they were. No sure if they were just having a bad day or if this is normal. I will not be returning to this restaurant.

The menu is small but the food is delicious.

I visited recently and their chorizo taco is delicious. The chips and salsa were fiery hot and yummy. The salsa verde was less spicy. The owner, Hector, is a very sweet and welcoming guy and gave my friend a free shot of tequila when he complimented him on the selection. I will definitely go back.

Vegetarian corn quesadilla, rice, beans and guacamole.

Authentic, reasonably priced Mexican dishes. I found out about this location via Restaurants.com (Palacios currently has a coupon offer on that site). There are corn tortilla options for those that are gluten free, and they also offer several vegetarian dishes. No margaritas here, though they do have Mexican beers and Budweiser beers, along with tequilas, rums, and bloody marys. Cash only establishment, so come prepared.

This was an excellent find. Working in the city, and type in tacos. Been craving them since my trip to Texas. These were as good as the ones I had down there, and I can't wait to go back to this gem of a restaurant and enjoy their great food and hospitality.

I wasn't super hungry so we got chips and salsa and guacamole to share and my friend got the chicken fajita. The salsa comes with two different salsa options, both were a bit spicy. The guacamole was classic and came out with a cute serving spoon. They had lots of food options but it's a bit more expensive than most Mexican spots in the city. I think my friend was a little disappointed that there was an up charge to add vegetables to her fajita and the portion wasn't as big as she thought it might for a $20 plate, but it tasted good. Super nice service and cute on the inside. They have a back patio that's very big and heated. Street parking.

I started with the most delicious Ultimate Margarita and enjoyed the Arroyo steak fajita burrito....oh my goodness! Others in my party shares the Steak Fajitas and my daughter went to the 7th level of delight as she drank the airfoam Margarita! Complimentary birthday shots were the icing on the cake. We love sitting out on Arzola's large covered patio and a well placed heater as it was a tad chilly. Great atmosphere, great service and even better food and drink.

The music in the background and terracotta designs highlighted the threads of Mexican culture but made the Homer statue appear to be a little out of place! Definitely a fun dining experience. The outdoor seating felt super spacious. It was a beautiful day and temperate weather to be able eat outside. It did have numerous umbrellas and a covered portion which kept most of the seating shaded. The service was friendly and attentive. The food was good. I was a little disappointed with the bread used for the Torta. I was expecting a bolillo type bread where it the outside is a crisp crust but the inside is airy, chewy and sweet. Instead it was a Telera Bread that was like a very crumbly messy french roll. The pieces of chicken were very thin and cut into strips instead of one patty. It was very dry and not much flavor. The fries were potato-y but not seasoned or salty. Very bland. The aroma of all the food was phenomenal.
