They have good weeknight specials; I think Mondays were 2.95 margs. Friday was 18.99 Cadillac marg pitchers. Service was great, very prompt, very friendly. We never waited for anything that we asked for. Good came out fairly quickly. Place your typical Mexican restaurant. It seemed pretty clean. Prices were decent. Food was good but nothing special. Everyone at the table liked what they ordered. I got the nacho supreme which was huge, well loaded, and tasty. They do use the thin tortilla chips with the nachos, so the crispy doesn't last long. Just moved to the city and was excited to try a new place. Was estimated 20 minute pick up time and ended up sitting in the lobby for an hour waiting with no reason. By the time i got my Nachos, it was cold and the chips were soggy so I have to eat with a fork. Was hoping the food was going to at least be fresh since I waited so long. Been here twice. The first time I had a strawberry margarita and shrimp nachos. The shrimp was grilled in a garlic lime sauce that was delicious and the margarita complemented it perfectly. Second time I had the shrimp fajitas lunch special. Grilled shrimp onions and peppers on an iron skillet with tortillas rice and beans. Delicious. It's just....below average. We live just down the block so we've given this place it's fair share of visits. First impressions weren't bad but it seems to have gone downhill. The decor is wonderful, the murals are beautiful, the outdoor seating/patio area seems like a great place to hang out and they do a great job of making this inviting but that's the highlight of the whole place. The service is alright - there's a big sign when you go in that they are hiring so that just goes to show that they are working with a limited amount of employees. This is on Saturday evening, June 4, 2022. So they shouldn't be faulted for the service even though it is a little lacking. It's never been 100% since we've started coming here though the employees always seem nice. The food is the huge downfall. I don't know when it did but things seemed to have changed. If you've been to the bazillion other mexican restaurants all through the entire country of these United States of America you will 95% find the same food everywhere. It's all the same. For some reason I was expecting nachos (!) with refried beans, cheese dip, lettuce, tomatoes, and sour cream. I know it might have been asking for too much but I wouldn't have minded a little melted actual cheese, either. Sorry excuse for 'nachos'. Same overcooked ground beef. My wife's food wasn't dazzling either. Plain meat in three flour tortillas with onion and cilantro. All in all a very disappointing visit especially for a Saturday night. Americanized Mexican food in a very colorful and cheap spot with fast service. I would say it is the South City equivalent of Burro Loco or Mi Ranchito There are lots of cheesy decorations all over, including huge murals of random people on the walls, and they also have a covered patio with a bar. Good entrees with a fiesta style decor. 3 stars because the Margs are made with sour mix vs. fresh lime and guacamole was not fresh (as in probably out of a tub). However, the Margs are huge (small is 27 Oz), and heavy on the booze. The Alambre meal was divine (and spicy with fresh jalapeño). But that Queso blanco though, that stole the show! You can't miss this brightly colored Dutchtown joint - drive down South Grand - you'll know what I mean. I don't even need to give you the address. I have only been there on a week night and I am guessing that with only residential parking, as most south city joints are, that the parking situation can get a bit dicey. We freaking love this place. Deep South Grand Mexican food spot that is affordable and delicious. The staff is always friendly and accommodating. Granted, it's a little out of the way, but it truly is a gem in south city. Recently, we stopped in on a Tuesday. Lindsey was our server. She is awesome. Clearly Chimichangas has a loyal following me included and while the food is almost always spot on I've eaten here enough to experience the kinks in their armor. Located in south city on Grand sometimes parking can be an issue but not usually. They have plenty of seating inside and out so there's rarely a wait. Adorned with typical Mexican scenes painted on the wall Chimichangas is pretty typical. Food wise? Almost always perfect with my favorite being the carnitas. A mound of perfectly seasoned pork. Another favorite is the carnitas tacos. Really tender but occasionally you get that gristle that you just can't chew. Their salsa while always fresh and tasty varies in heat depending on the day. Now I can handle almost any heat but it was too hot for my son. Overall it's darn good at a reasonable price and that's why I'll be back. You should try it! read more

If you're driving south on Grand just glance to the right once you reach Eichelberger....the vibrantly colorful building with lights & awnings & outdoor patio nearly extending to the street & cars crowded around the general vicinity...that's Chimichanga's. Anywho, I'm always stumped when it comes to ordering Mexican so I keep it simple and get a super basic taco. It was delicious! I could've ordered at least 2 more but the way my carbs are set-up.... My dining partner ordering the chicken fajitas which arrived in show stopping form; hot & sizzling! She enjoyed them immensely. Lunch for the both of us was $10. Food... Coma... Oh my God... I've been on the hunt for good Mexican food lately and can't seem to find too many places that take care of the craving. That all changed when I went to Chimichanga's. After driving for what seemed like miles down Grand, it's pretty hard to miss the brightly colored building and blinking lights. This place is just cool to look at! There's a parking lot right behind it (and street parking is also an option), and the bright colors get even brighter inside. They had a weird goblin-looking guy set up next to the welcome sign... you know, like the ones they sell at Johnnie Brock's? I thought that was really weird and creepy... the rest of the place was pretty great though. Neon colors everywhere, almost obnoxious but not quite. Tons of character going on. The margarita list here is huge, and by that I mean you can get margaritas the size of your freaking head. I decided to keep it under control and just get a 12oz which was more than enough for a Sunday evening. The margarita was pretty standard, but that's not necessarily a bad thing - it was good! The chips and salsa stole the show right away, though. Best salsa I've had at a Mexican restaurant in a long time... possibly ever. The guac was pretty good too! My main reason for not ordering the "skinny" margarita was because I knew based on the entree I was going to order, it wouldn't make a difference if I saved a couple calories in my drink. Enter: the chile poblano. Two poblano peppers filled with cheese, fried in an egg batter, and topped with a creamy sauce. It's as amazing as it sounds. And, bingo, I loved the rice and beans that came with it! Needless to say I almost needed to be rolled out of the place. Nice. Trust this place anytime you need an authentic Mexican meal. Always my favorite american mexican joint in the city. The price for quality of food is well above other more talked about and pricier places. Outside of Covid, it's always crowded and rowdy, but it doesn't bother me. It just seems like people are having a good time. It might be harder if you have kids during busy weekend nights with the noise. I am from California and never have I have tasted a taco, chalupa, and tamales that tasted as if they were bought from Trader Joe's. Very disappointed with my order, no flavor, no heat, nothing. After sweating profusely and waiting in a never ending line at Food Truck Friday, we decided to seek out a restaurant with air conditioning. We chose Chimichanga, and we chose wrong... Now don't get me wrong, the margaritas were decent and the food was pretty good, but it was soooooo hot. I know it's a million degrees outside, so I can cut them some slack, but it was unbearable. We arrived at around 7:30 and were told there was a 30 minute wait. No problem, we'll just have a drink at the bar, which we discovered was outside. They had some serious fans out there, so surprisingly, it wasn't too bad. The bartender was unfriendly, but in that heat, I can't blame her too much... We ordered GIANT margaritas and they were very cold and refreshing, which was just what the doctor ordered. After almost exactly a 30 minute wait, our table was ready. The minute we sat down, we knew we made a mistake, it was cooler outside than it was inside! It was also really loud and we were sat at a table in the middle of the aisle between two rows of booths, so there were constantly servers rushing past us. It was sort of a mad house. It took forever to get a server to help us. I finally had to flag someone down. I think they thought we had already been helped because we had margaritas. Once we found someone to help us, the service was great. I ordered a carne asada chimichanga based on other yelp reviews and my boyfriend got some sort of combo deal. It is just standard Americanized Mexican food, but it is good. Both of our meals were huge and cheap. There was plenty left over to take home. I took a couple friends here the other night who had never been here before. The pros: The chips and salsa were among the best I've ever had at a restaurant. The chips were light and not over-powering salty, which I like. The salsa seemed fresh with tons of cilantro, which I also enjoy. The food was quite tasty. Not the absolute best in the area but not the worst either. I had the beef tamale deluxe. It came with both guacamole and sour cream. What restaurant does that? Love it. The beef was good, be it a bit dry and the mesa was ok, but I would still order it again. Overall it wasn't bad for the price. The cons: Parking is difficult. Street parking for most. The place is loud. We decided to eat inside because of the scorching heat, and the place wasn't elbow to elbow crowded, but it was still loud. We could carry on a decent coversation, but the waiter had a hard time hearing us. Speaking of the waiter, he wasn't very attentive. He let drinks go dry quite a few times and we sat at the table with empty plates for too long while we waited for our check. Overall: It's not a bad place to get a cheap mexican fix. Expect the noise level and asking for refills. My friends enjoyed the atmosphere, food and prices. Will return. read more
