The staff is friendly and checked on us a lot to make sure we were satisfied. Their chips, queso, and salsa is delicious! Service was speedy too. I got the burrito Alfredo and it was delicious. It did have a lot of grilled onions in it but thankfully I love onions!! My partner got an asada torta and it was MASSIVE. I would definitely recommend getting a torta if you're feeling hungry! Both meals tasted excellent. When our waiter checked my partners ID after he ordered a beer, I said it's his birthday! Him and a few other waiters surprised him with a birthday song, a fun hat, and free sopapillas! Prices are excellent as well.

The restraint I had to walk out without ordering 3 more honestly surprised me. Cute little unassuming spot right off of 421. The parking lot filled up fast. There's a nice fresh condiments bar for any salsas, guac, radish, garnish, etc. that you'd like to add. My total came to about $10 which was super reasonable, especially given the portion size.

I've had pretty solid, delicious, authentic tacos in Boone but the meat was so juicy and seasoned well!! I really enjoyed that they serve cucumber on the side in addition to the radish/lime and salsa. The salsa verde was the perfect amount of spice! However, I do wish they did double tortilla for the tacos. All good though.

The new ownership has totally screwed it up. We wouldn't drive a mile to have lunch at black cat now. Over twenty five years of fun and good food totally wiped out with poor ownership. The food is really bad now. I really can't think of one thing to be positive about. We have ordered the Don't be a jerk burrito for over 25 years and really was excited to have it. It has changed to the No taste bland out of a can microwave burrito. So sad.

The restaurant opened back in 2012. It is veteran-owned and employee-run. The restaurant doesn't have its own parking lot, but there is free parking on the street and in nearby lots. There is both inside seating, with a bar, but I didn't get much of a chance to see that as I opted to sit outside. I was enjoying the much cooler temperatures in Ashe County and decided to enjoy the fresh air. The outdoor patio isn't overly fancy--it features standard picnic tables--but it is fully covered and provides a very nice, relaxing open-air environment. My waitress was as friendly as could be and gave me plenty of time to look at the menu as I was having trouble deciding between a burger, the pot roast or the apple salad. I went with the pot roast as it was something not on the menu at most places. It was roasted for 8 hours and had mashed potatoes, veggies and gravy. It was delicious, and I was happy with my choice. Although I am sure I would have enjoyed the other options, I narrowed my choice down to them as well. Boondocks is a gem of West Jefferson, and I've already been planning a return trip.

After looking over the menu online beforehand, we were excited to give it a try. We were seated right away, but then waited over five minutes before anyone acknowledged our table. Our server, AJ (Adrianne, I believe), was friendly enough, but she seemed a bit overwhelmed or possibly stretched too thin. Since we'd already been waiting, we were ready to order both drinks and our meals at the same time, and that seemed to throw off the usual routine. Throughout the meal, it felt like we were inconveniencing her whenever we needed something, including asking if the music could be turned down. The food was the highlight. I had the biscuits with pimento cheese and fried green tomatoes, and the pimento cheese was exactly how I like it. My husband's tuna sandwich was good, although he wasn't a fan of the house fries--they were extremely thick, almost like eating a baked potato cut into wedges. We also ordered half sweet/half unsweet tea, but it was still much sweeter than we expected. The dining room itself felt a little plain for such a large space, and the 60s and 70s music was louder than we would have liked during lunch. Overall, the food was definitely the best part of our visit, and I'd order my meal again. With a little more attentive service and a more comfortable dining atmosphere, this could have been a much better experience.

There was always someone within three paces of our table, and the food came out so quickly. Chips, salsa and bean dip showed up (all warm and tasty). We ordered waters, tea, and a Dos Equis ambar and then took a look at the menu. As is usual with a Mexican restaurant, there are so, so many options. This menu had many of the regular options that people are familiar with, but there were a lot of other choices as well. I usually try to order something unique to the restaurant if I can. My only disappointment was I didn't see tamales or chile rellenos as an option. In the end I asked the waiter what he thought was the best dish, and then I ordered that. Unfortunately, I don't know what the "name" of it was on the menu. It was a half rack of baby-back ribs on a salad bed with a red sauce over top. The sauce was not like an enchilada or mole. I would say it was more akin to a thin salsa. The ribs were slow cooked and so tender. They tasted nothing like traditional american ribs but were really good. My dish came with beans and spanish rice. The beans were typical, kinda soupy with cheese on top. Nothing "extra" in either direction. The rice was pale, but the flavor was top notch. My wife ordered a fajita plate which had a bit of everything on it, steak, shrimp, chicken, etc. Her meal came with beans and a typical mexican salad. The fajita filling was excellent! Both meals came with hot tortillas to aid in the scooping and general enjoyment. I would definitely come back to this place.
