You might notice that the chips and dip didn't arrive as fast as they did before, but it wasn't that noticeable except they were exceptional before, but it's still good. I ordered the carnitas and they are very good. This was my first time eating them as I tend to shy away from pork because of fatty meat. These were absolutely delicious and very tender. Their beans are delightful. I do not care for rice so I can not review them. Service was timely and friendly. It would have been 5 stars but I am mobility challenged so I asked the hostess for a table and not a booth. She attempted to seat me at a booth so it was embarrassing to have to wait while they switched me to a table with chairs. read more

Really poor experience I can't get past. Went for dinner and ordered my usual Chimichanga but I was given Tacitos. Waiter did not speak good English but my husband spoke Spanish to him to explain. Very accommodating to my kids plain taco request and for the first time ever my 10 year old cleaned her plate of refried beans. Can't say enough nice things. Plaza Del Sol is in a strip mall/shopping center, and it's fairly unassuming from the outside. Inside is full of vibrant colors and murals. The service was quick and so chatty. There was always someone within three paces of our table, and the food came out so quickly. Chips, salsa and bean dip showed up (all warm and tasty). We ordered waters, tea, and a Dos Equis ambar and then took a look at the menu. As is usual with a Mexican restaurant, there are so, so many options. This menu had many of the regular options that people are familiar with, but there were a lot of other choices as well. I usually try to order something unique to the restaurant if I can. My only disappointment was I didn't see tamales or chile rellenos as an option. In the end I asked the waiter what he thought was the best dish, and then I ordered that. Unfortunately, I don't know what the "name" of it was on the menu. It was a half rack of baby-back ribs on a salad bed with a red sauce over top. The sauce was not like an enchilada or mole. I would say it was more akin to a thin salsa. The ribs were slow cooked and so tender. They tasted nothing like traditional american ribs but were really good. My dish came with beans and spanish rice. The beans were typical, kinda soupy with cheese on top. Nothing "extra" in either direction. The rice was pale, but the flavor was top notch. My wife ordered a fajita plate which had a bit of everything on it, steak, shrimp, chicken, etc. Her meal came with beans and a typical mexican salad. The fajita filling was excellent! Both meals came with hot tortillas to aid in the scooping and general enjoyment. I would definitely come back to this place. read more

At first restaurant was good. Then they started messing up on my takeout orders. at one time they gave me a bag of nachos that the guacamole also turned brown instead of enchiladas I had ordered. I went last week to pick up some tacos. When I got home, I realized that the chicken tacos that they gave me they had taken right out of container holding chicken. They didn't even drain the water off of the chicken. by the time I got home. All I had was soggy soft tacos that were inedible. I had better tacos and a restaurant called Cruisers and they're not even Mexican. They have taco Tuesdays. I'll continue to go there and not plaza del Sol. read more

So, this has been our favorite Mexican restaurant in the area for a while. Problem is that the waitresses they have now don't speak very good English and our order is wrong 2 out of every 3 times we go here. Guess it's time to start going to the other Mexican restaurant in town. read more

food is great. waitress was great. paying bill, not great. deceptive. why? because they do not have a sign stating they charge a credit card fee anywhere near the register and they refuse to do anything about it. when i used a credit card to pay at register, they presented to me a receipt only for the total and not itemization. As the bill looked higher than i expected, i asked if they charged me a credit card fee and she told me yes. i then asked to have the card credited back and i would then pay cash. She refused. Told me she couldn't do that. Told me that the sign is on the door. I told her the nc law states sign must be also at the point of sale which it is not. I asked for manager and he came 10 minutes later. He listened to my story for 5 seconds then told me i needed to leave or he would call the police. I asked him to just refund the card and I'd pay cash.. Not happening and i must leave. I called later that day and spoke with the manager again, named manwel. He told me that it's my fault that i paid the fee as i didn't wait for the itemized receipt at the table and that since i paid at the register, the fee was added. This is unacceptable and illegal based on nc law regarding credit card fee disclosure requirments. Why is there a credit card POS device at the register facing customers unless it's meant to be used to pay your bill. Something doesn't add up and this needs investigated. NC law is clear. The sign must be at the entry door AND the point of sale. In this case, the point of sale is at the register credit card device that faces the customer! I offered to come by and pay cash and for them to refund the card but they will not do it and said call whoever i want to report them. Which I have every plan of doing first thing tomorrow. Too bad. I really liked this place's food but management obviously doesn't care about the law. read more

Last few times we have been in they have had problems. No fountain drinks available, no chips & salsa, no beer, we waited an hour for food last week and never got served so we left. There's so much inconsistency with staff too, plus the language barrier. read more

The atmosphere was clean and bright, lovely murals of Mexican scenes and brightly painted tables and chairs. Our server was top notch. So friendly with a huge smile and warm personality. He kept an eye on our table, refilling chip baskets and drinks well before we ran out, yet was not intrusive or overbearing. To our surprise, our server did not know what kind of beans the meals came with, and when we ordered a burrito, an enchilada, and a taco, she took down our order and left without asking which types of meat we wanted. She later returned to ask which meats we wanted, then returned two more times to confirm. Unfortunately, when we received our bill we were surprised to discover that the type we ordered (grilled chicken) is an additional fee (which our server didn't tell us). The manager confirmed that the menu does not specify that there's an additional charge for grilled chicken, but that we should have known that the computer automatically adds the extra charge. Since this was our first visit, unfortunately we had not yet been given an opportunity to review how their computer calculated the various menu options. Even more disappointing is that both the burrito and the enchilada were stuffed only with the overcooked, dry chicken: no seasonings were apparent, and there were no other fillings or cheeses or flavors inside either one (although both had a sauce on top). We are incredibly disappointed by both the poor service and the bland food, and wish we had tried a different restaurant instead. read more

We really enjoyed this place. It was one of the few places open on a Sunday during Winter in West Jefferson. Located in a strip mall with plenty of parking, the interior is really fun with carved wooden seats and booths painted in vibrant colors. The salsa was great, the only thing lacking was a serve yourself salsa bar. That would have bumped it to 5 stars. Otherwise this place is great. Huge portions for a fair price. read more

Our most favorite of all Mexican places to eat ever, anywhere! Their freshly made guacamole Mexicano (I get mine without jalapeños) is made in front of you when you order it. The light, thin and crunchy chips come with small bowls of bean w/queso dip and salsa. Our water and tea drinks were refilled often and service was exemplary. We love eating there. Located in a strip mall, this restaurant is beautifully decorated inside. Our party of 7 ate here on a windy Saturday afternoon. We dined on beef burritos, chicken enchiladas, beef tacos, rice and retried beans. The food was very good. I really enjoyed the burritos & I think the rice was some of the best I have eaten. It was light yet flavorful! The salsa was fresh & obviously made in house. The chips were light & crunchy with a minimal amount of salt. The wait staff was efficient & the restaurant was clean. I would visit again & recommend to others! They got the taco salad with beef tips and ground beef and both thought the meat tasted weird and today were sick all day. My grandma got the salmon and it was so overcooked that it was white, and the shrimp on the side was burnt to a crisp and STILL IN THE SHELL!! I got ACP and it's hard to mess up ACP but the chicken was real dry... On top of the food. The service was slow, and nothing against Hispanics but the waitress couldn't speak English enough to communicate with us. That's just bad for business if you ask me. I'm sorry... My husband had the El Marino dish and he says it's the best Mexican dish he's ever had! And, actually one of the best meals he's ever had - period! The El Camino had salad with fresh avocado slices, rice, beans, lots of cooked vegetables, and then there's the seafood. Shrimp calamari scallops oysters crab meat and clams! Wow he's a big eater and couldn't even begin to finish this tremendous meal. I had a lunch special and it was good too. We went there on Christmas Eve for a family lunch. Everyone enjoyed it.
