The workers here are friendly college students. The person at the counter with the dramatic emo clothing was friendly and accommodating. She made me pine for my own undergraduate days. We liked her a lot. The atmosphere here is fun. With the good beer selection, this is definitely a good college student haunt. The guac was nearly perfect, which says a lot, because I tend to loathe smooth / non-chunky guac. It taught me something: I *can* like smooth guac! I'd give it an A! The chips are kind of meh. Store bought. B- I'd give the Cheeseburgerrito an A. The pickles worked remarkably good; if I ordered this again, I'd ask for extra pickles. If you have kids, this is perfect, and a single burrito easily fed both my 5 and 9 year old. The nachos are big fat fail. F!!! They were dry, boring, and **desperately** needed more cheese, by double, and for the cheese to be melted to distribute the fats and oils to the chips underneath. They used real cheese, which is the way to do it, but shredded room temp cheese just doesn't cut the mustard. The only thing that saved the dish for me was that I ordered a cup of chimichurri sauce, which provided the much needed oil and moisture. The chimichurri sauce was very tasty, but *slightly* bland. It should've had a little more garlic, but chimichurri sauce from Latin America is probably a little too much garlic for the typical American palate. I'd give it a B+. Another big fat fail was the steak. OMG. F!!! The steak was so tough there were a few pieces I had to pick out of my mouth and place it on the side of my plate. Wow, guys! I can't figure out if nobody here eats the food or if they just don't care because of employee discount, but that steak was horrendous! So if it seems like I'm saying the good was very good and the bad was horrid, that's exactly what I'm saying. I'm still giving this establishment two stars instead of 3 because I *refuse* to believe that the manager of this store would sample the nachos and the steak and say "Yup, those are excellent products!". They are objectively bad, which makes me think that nobody is keeping watch of the quality of the food.

Veggie and tofu quesadilla was excellent! Salsa was good, chips were crunchy, Valentina in the bottle, and the PBR on tap and cold. Kinda hard to beat the combo! Service was friendly and food came out quickly. Cozy fun spot down under on Depot Street half block from Mast General with a casual hippie/hipster vibe.

The portions & flavor were absolutely delicious. We went out looking for some mexican food & we're not disappointed here. There was a big party that had ordered ahead of us but our food had come out very quickly regardless! The employees were great & service was quick. We got full & enjoyed every bite! Jerk Burrito. Interesting and delicious flavor combinations! The burritos were stuffed full and totally satisfying. The coleslaw on the side was also a nice touch. It's sweetness cut the spicy topping of the burrito. Also the restaurant atmosphere was definitely different and more casual but fitting for the food.

The inside is underground and small-ish, no outdoor seating Menu: Love all the funky burrito flavors & vegetarian options! Reminds me of flaming Amy's in Wilmington. Love the BBQ trash burrito and Sage burrito. So flavorful and jam packed! This place had been on my radar for some time. This place was fantastic. A little hole in the wall, but the food was great. I had the Don't Be A Jerk burrito with chicken, which was great. My wife had the steak enchiladas ... the flavor was fantastic. All good. We all agreed that we'll come back again next time we're in town.

Stopped in today around 2:30. Food phenomenal. Portions massive. Service way above average and far beyond just about anywhere we've been in this entire area. Very inexpensive for what you get. Haven't seen a $1 draft in over a decade. Great vibe inside only to be bolstered by the upbeat aura of the staff. Nice to see someone give a shit about what they are doing and who they are doing it for in a time when quality service is becoming a lost art. Skip the overpriced pans of trash at Chipotle and give this place your business. They won't disappoint.

First time here and really enjoyed it! The girl at the counter was very helpful when asked about vegan options. I got the Lesson of the Sage Burrito- made vegan by removing the garlic aioli. I tried the Coconut Curry sauce on the side and while its tasty I will say it's not for me. Just not a huge coconut girl A heads up - The guacamole is not vegan and does contain sour cream. All tortillas are vegan except for the Chipotle. Would love to come back for sure. Cool environment too. Awesome portions for price

Service was a bit slow at first. but overall this is a great place to eat. you won't go away hungry. they feed you well here. I like the variety of items to choose from. and the interior is pretty hip too. stop by, you won't be disappointed.

I used to live in Boone and this was one of my favorite spots and every time me and my family go up there we try to go to it. The atmosphere is great and the servings are pretty large. Sometimes they put a little less meat than you would like but the portion of the food makes up for it entirely unless you just absolutely love tons of meat. The service is also good it's mostly college kids that work there and they're fun to talk to. read more

Update: Yep, still my favorite spot in Boone. Chicken wing burrito always delivers. My wife loved her steak tacos and my kids enjoyed their nachos and quesadilla. Something for everyone! Plus, they have PBR, which is the key to my heart. read more

It's been a couple years, but we're back at the Black Cat! Once again I could it vary from my standard choice, and the only item i have ever ordered here--Don't Be A Jerk. Reminded me of a dive bar from my college days. Was hopeful. The burrito was mostly rice and beans but ok. Tried the salsa taster. No free chips here the mango salsa was great but the regular and spicy salsas were not good and the "spicy" was barely spicy. Disappointed overall read more

The service was terrible. Placed an order and didn't get it correct, not even close! The person who took my order said she didn't hear what I had order. It could be because they have the music blaring as if we were at a club instead of an eatery. Her attitude was crappy. read more

Went here on a Saturday afternoon with both DDs, DH and DD boyfriend. We had just done the mountain coaster and was ready for lunch. Chips were good, but the salsa was amazing. I think maybe they put crack in it. Lol. The burritos were huge and lots of things to choose from as well as a make your own. The atmosphere was a bit dark and eclectic. read more

Stopped in after the football game, most restaurants had long waits and Black Cat is a walk up counter to order so getting food quickly was a plus since we were beyond hungry! Food was hot, delicious and portions were nice. Our group of six each orders something different but we loved all of it! read more

The ingredients are top notch, not cheap proteins used as fillers. This is a solid choice anytime of the day! Great combinations of burritos as well as ability to create your own. The chips are warm and taste locally made. The sauces are authentic and full of flavor. The service is always warm and welcoming! Eating in has a cool college vibe that keeps things real. I am thrilled to report that Black Cat is back up and running again. Their burritos are highly customizable, vegetarian friendly and absolutely carnivore approved. The fantastic salsas, queso, and my absolute favorite slaw ever are made super fresh everyday in house. Don't Be A Jerk (spicy chicken w/ lots of grilled pineapple and other delicious things) was my go to from back in the day, and it still holds up. Trust me on this one. The boyfriend has gotten the Burrito of Brotherly Love every time we have ever eaten here over the years. Grab your own silverware and hot sauce when you go to pick out a table after paying at the counter. They bring the food right to you. I do have to admit I miss the old toys they used in place of table numbers! read more

Stopped for quick lunch! It was so good! I had the White Trash Burrito! It was huge! Loaded with BBQ chicken, it had a bit of heat that really amped it up. Enjoyed an icy cold PBR! Great combo! Food came out fast! Thanks much for the great lunch! read more

Local staple. You can not go to Boone and not hit Black Cat. In our case, we went twice in three days. If you are Struggling with what to get on the menu just simply wait your finger around and wherever it lands go with that... You simply cannot go wrong. We got the special of the day, street corn and the mango salsa (which could win a global award). The second visit I got the pineapple mole enchiladas and again the mango salsa. The place is trendy, cool with a grungy mountain Town vibes. They have the cheapest and best beer/shots in town too. Can someone please hear my cry for help and open a Black Cat in Charlotte. We are in town on a mom's weekend away. We had such a delicious dinner last night at Black Cat! I ordered the chorizo nachos and they did not disappoint. When I asked my friends who went to App / used to live in Boone where we should eat they pretty much all had Black Cat on their list. It's super cute place with an excellent menu. And I loved the nostalgic scene / pop punk music playing in the background. All around I loved this place. And will def be visiting again on our next trip to Boone! Love y'all. read more

we ate here on Thursday evening. the space is a "hole in the wall", shabby chic kind of place on a side street in Boone. you order at the register using an online menu (QR code). I had a vegetarian burrito with garlic sauce topping. very tasty! our server was cheerful and helpful. and the beer was cheap ($2 Dos Equis)!! read more

Black Cat burrito has the worst cashier. I eat there a lot because the food is delicious, but twice this week when I called, the same female cashier says "hello can you hold on for just a moment I'll be right with you" so I waited over 30 mins and hung up. I gave them the benefit of the doubt for maybe being busy so I drove over and the phone was off the hook on the counter and she was outside smoking a cig and then came inside took my order and just kept chillin on her phone. I called again today and the same thing happened except I waited for 52 mins just to take a screenshot of how ridiculous this is. I feel bad for the owners for how much business she is losing them, and it's disrespectful and RUDE. The only reason I gave 1 one star is because of how good the food is. There are plenty of other people looking for jobs who would be grateful to have hers. read more

It is always a treat to go to Black Cat! There burritos are so unique and DELICIOUS! I will rave about the "thai me up" burrito till I am blue in the face. The nachos are a great snack if your just passing through. The atmosphere is fun and casual. The perfect place to bring a date, out of town guests, or when your just hungover. read more

(To go) Food comes out fast, I got the "Cheeseburgerrito" ($9.75 one of their most expensive "burritos") and Chips and Guacamole, the chips and guacamole were pretty good. However the burrito it's self was not that great for this being one of their most expensive burritos. This burrito does come with stake however for the size of the burrito compared to their other burritos, the price doesn't match up. I do plan on going back and trying some of their other burritos options, and explore their menu. read more

The young girl serving didn't speak English well, when asked a question, she had to get another lady to answer. She did check on us, just once during our meal but did refill our drinks and offered a takeout container. The food was good. We ordered the tortas milanese with chicken and ACP chicken. The sandwich was huge and the ACP was a big plate full. IF we order again, it will be takeout or delivery.

Dos Amigos came to mind, though I bet it's been a decade or more since I last ate there, so I had no clue what to expect. As the previous sentence reveals, this restaurant has been a tenant in the New Market Center shopping complex for quite a while. Mexican food and adult beverages seem to belong in a college town, after all. And the restaurant was well attended during my visit, a good sign that the restaurant was still deserving of my business. That said, I was seated and attended to very quickly. The complimentary chips and wide variety of accompanying dips (five options!) were a strong start to the meal. Thankfully, I somehow managed to save enough room for the main event, a lovely plate of carnitas that arrived in a reasonable time. Joining the pork on my plate was guac salad and a healthy portion of beans. I found myself pleased with all the food I was presented. Prices were reasonable for the amount of food I received, and the quality of service I received throughout my stay was excellent. Dos Amigos is a bit noisy, and the dining arrangements do show a bit of wear and tear, but if you don't mind those things I'd call this a smart stop for a filling meal. If only the establishment would spring for cable during the World Cup, my experience of The Social as a "sports bar" would've been unparalleled compared to the other pretenders who decided the U.S. Open was the only "sport" worth airing. If I'd only come for wings and such, I'd've had no notes. But guys, your salads are culinarily (and decidedly) confused. My burrata was delivered atop a spiral of beefsteak wedges, nestled among wild greens, with zero seasoning, which is a hate crime when it comes to tomatoes; golden beets would've elevated it considerably, normally without much consideration... however. I'd thankfully chosen to add salmon, which was cooked to perfection, saving the dish. Haley suggested salt and pepper, which was a clutch move. Given the pleasant part of my previous experience, the salmon salad I ordered two nights later was even more discombobulated. Emily asked what kind of dressing I'd prefer, and I managed to avoid recoiling from the options provided: bleu cheese, ranch, thousand island... and then, finally, a cilantro-lime vinaigrette - the only suitable option. Instead of a deep plate, this was served essentially as a "bowl" that one might receive from delivery, only in a ceramic vessel. "Crispy" garbanzo beans (?!) were in one section of the plate, worse green olives than came with my martinis in another, four sad cucumber slices and pickled red onions in yet another, and in the saddest section, under-cooked yellow beets - half-run through a mandoline to make matchsticks, only still-connected at one end into slices to make Hell-deemed beet sporks. Again, all atop mixed greens, which are commonly available, even at Wal-Mart. I didn't deign to more than glance at my neighbors' plates, for fear I'd take even more offense, but the people making food at The Social are either under-staffed or inexperienced, as being unserious would likely wash out if anyone were to pay attention. Regardless, management is to blame for such disappointing experiences, and not their cooks, and certainly not their bartenders. Do better by Boone, and stop reinforcing the notion that standards are somehow lower in the High Country. Don't make me go to Macado's when I visit again next year.

This was one of the worst dining experiences I have had in a very long time and if I could give it zero stars I would. Upon arrival to the restaurant a girl at the counter who clearly had zero interest in working there and was on the verge of being rude took our order. I thought she was about to fall over because from the looks of it she was either severely hungover or high on prescription drugs. This should have been the first indication to leave. We took a seat at a table while we waited for the food to arrive. There was a bus boy who walked around pretending to be busy, but wasn't really doing anything. There was a cook in the back texting while the girl mentioned was dancing in the kitchen. We continued to wait for our food because we had already paid for it...unfortunately they take your money at the counter and hold you hostage for however long they feel like. The orders for the other people came out very slowly and I'm pretty sure they even forgot to serve a woman at the table next to us. It was 50 minutes later before our food arrived, and the druggie girl delivered the food and before we could even comment on the quality of the service she rudely says, "Sorry for the wait we've been busy today." The place was only about at 1/3 capacity so this was an excuse for their poor service and just only made the experience even worse. I would have said something to them about the slowness of the service, but this was the kind of place where you know they would have spit in your food. The plates are supposed to come with a side of chips, and on one of the orders they put an ample amount, but on the other one there were literally 5 chips...The food was mediocre and I had my hopes up that it would have at least been one of the better burritos I've had, but it certainly wasn't. Chipotle is better than this and the people that work there are friendly and fast. Spare yourself the trouble and DON'T go here there are plenty of other much better options in Boone. I rarely take the time to review places, but this was an exception. Terrible service and mediocre food. read more

We got here early on a weeknight, so there was no wait. I ordered a dollar PBR and squeezed some lime into it. My son wouldn't eat the kids quesadilla, but I got him a plate of beans and rice which he described as "great." I had the tofu Satay It To Me Softly, with a side of backdraft sauce -- fantastic, the vegetables were fresh, piping hot but not cooked to death, rich and flavorful, a whole meal wrapped up in a burrito. We sat at the bar so my child could get an authentic single-dad experience. I tried to hit on the bartender; she was unimpressed. The music in the dining area was classic rock, but through the service window I could enjoy the harder stuff the kitchen staff were listening to. We ate our food, and my son enjoyed his soda while I drank my beer, then I went to inspect the plumbing. There was both hot and cold running water in the men's room, and the toilet flushed with impressive efficiency. The mirror over the sink told me I looked like ****. I knew that already. When I went back out to finish my corn chips and maybe have a second beer, I thought that the bartender was moving slowly. When she turned around, that was when I realized she was a zombie! I looked back into the kitchen and noticed -- they were all zombies too! I grabbed my son and made for the door, but a group of zombies had gotten stuck in line in front of the register! We beat a quick retreat up the ramp, where I distracted the zombies with a loud rendition of "Proud Mary," and as they moved away from the entrance, we leapt over the rail and bolted for the door. We made our escape into the fresh night air of downtown Boone and just as we rounded the corner onto King Street, the undead horde surged out onto the sidewalk behind us. I don't know if anyone is alive to read this now, but if Black Cat is still open, and you can get there past all the zombies, it's your best bet for a bangin' good burrito, fish taco, queso, guacamole, or craft beer. I grew up not far from this area. I remember coming to Boone and going to Black Cat when I was in highschool for a burrito. The portions were great and the burritos were awesome. However, I went back to Boone for a visit recently. I was sorely disappointed by my experience there. It was not very clean, the portions were small, and it seemed like a dingy little dive. I am giving this a three and not a two simply because the burrito still tasted good. I can make a burrito that is just as delicious at home or I can go to Moe's Southwest Grill and get something similar for a better price. Overall, I would not go there again on my next visit to the area. read more
