Food was great, and service was great as well. Ambiance was fine, typical for the type of restaurant...nothing fancy but good

First off, go to Los Arcorisis in Boone. They don't screw up your order, and it's great! So I called in a to-go meal at 2 PM. The woman on the phone spoke broken English (which only makes sense considering the current state of our border to the south). I ordered the lunch fajitas. I was specific about beef, and I specifically said Carne Asada. After I picked up my order, I had a few phone calls come in, so I did not witness my food until about 45 minutes later. The only part of the order that they got right was my small side of guacamole. Other than that, they completely botched the order! WTF?!?Mind you by the way, when I entered the restaurant, it was completely dead, aka EMPTY. There was absolutely zero reason for the kitchen to "F" this up. The only reason I gave two stars is because the food looks OK. I have not even tasted it yet. Oh yeah, they forgot the rice too! Seriously?!?!? I doubt this will occur, but TO THE OWNERS... you guys should have kept the original restaurant you had before this. Foggy Rock it was called?? It was great! Food was very average and they also messed up our order; we were supposed to receive 3 kids taquitos and a chicken quesadilla for the kids. Instead got 4 chicken quesadillas. Ate there for lunch. It is a nice, clean restaurant, but after being seated it went a bit downhill. First they brought my wife's order but not mine and it was wrong. The server left before we could explain that wasn't what she ordered. I got up to to explain to the hostess that it wasn't what she ordered. The server came back and apologized and took her plate back. About 5 minutes later she brought my food but not my wife's. A few minutes later they brought hers. My food was pretty good, but my wife's cheese enchilada had a dark mole sauce that wasn't good. Her taco was also extremely bland. Would not be a place we would recommend or try again. read more

If you're used to "Mexican food = fast + cheap + pretty good" - think again! Mexican Rock has fast service, yes, but it's also excellent! The vibe is mod chill, and the music was much cooler than your typical. In a word, this place is worthy of Blowing Rock's amazing food scene! My chicken + shrimp ACP was fresh, delish and a hugely generous helping. My wife's chicken + steak fajita quesadilla looked perfect - she loved it. First clue that we should have kept going was only a handful of cars in the parking lot at midday on a beautiful Sunday in June. Driving in from out of town for the day, we decided to avoid the tourists and the hubs thought Mexican sound good. The. Salsa was bland tasting like a can of tomato sauce. Hubs ordered an overpriced (as all the main entrees were imo) burrito which he said was good. I ordered a Taco Salad--simple, right...The salad I received looked okay BUT as I began to mix it, there was very little shredded lettuce in it, tasting it was no flavor, used the table salsa-didn't help, asked server if they had any more spicy, she brought one with peppers in it. I wanted flavor not heat! I ate very little of it, leaving a full bowl of something that looked like a soup you would mix up for a dog with no green lettuce in sight. I left hungry and as the day wore on angry at myself for not calling the manager and having it removed from my check! Lunch at Mexican Rock today. The decor inside was cute, and we thought the seating was comfortable. I ordered a strawberry margarita and it was both pretty and tasty. The two salsas we got with complimentary chips were both bland, and there weren't any sauces on the table to jazz things up. My guy went with a lunch special of two burritos with red rice, and I had an entree of fajitas fundida. Both were quite tasty. We asked about dessert as we had seen pineapple ice cream on their Facebook page and even though it was no longer on the menu they agreed to make it for us. It was phenomenal!!! Our bill was under $70 for a boozy drink, two meals and a dessert, and everything was enjoyable so we'll definitely be back (especially if we can keep getting the pineapple ice cream). read more

Overall not a bad Mexican restaurant! The aesthetic is cute, upgraded and clean. Didn't have to wait to be seated because they have lots of seating available (inside & outside). Their menu offers lots of options for each category and although it is a bit pricey, the portions are large! I thought it was a bit odd to find whole bay leaves inside my quesadilla but other than that the food was good! I ordered the fresh lime margarita which tasted perfect! The food, service, and staff are great. I'm curious if anybody has had a problem with using a credit card for payment for services here. My card was scammed the very night I had a meal here. I didn't use the card for any purchases that day other than at this restaurant and the fraudulent purchase made with my card occurred minutes after leaving. I love eating here but I'll be a cash paying customer going forward. read more

Overpriced for the quality of food but the quality of decent. If you love Mexican food like my family and I you will be disappointed. The Fajitas Carnitas tasted like it was boiled then grilled. The pollo con crema was dry I guess because they put it on top of a bed of rice. It was a good atmosphere was decent as well. read more

The place is nice and clean, the salsa is decent, but the Burrito Roqueta was fantastic. The mango and horchata agua frescas were delicious, and tasted homemade. We will definitely be back the next time we are in town. read more

Driving through the area and we stopped at this gem for a bite to eat & what a great decision that was! Authentic Mexican food, huge portions -- we got chori queso & 4 tacos to split between two of us thinking that would hold us over until dinner but the tacos were so full we couldn't even finish it all. The taco meats were not fresh, especially the pork and steak and Chicken. It is hard to tell about ground beef. The salsa was something poured out of a bottle. No sign of fresh tomato, cilantro or onions. Very disappointing. At 5:30 PM were were one of 3 parties in the restaurant maybe. Sad to see such slow business on a Thursday evening at dinner time. We were most surprised that the margarita was priced high and oversized when ordering a medium size ( 24 oz) I never would have imagined a medium being so LARGE. The medium was the size of a small fishbowl and you could barely taste the tequila/ Petrone. We will not return to this establishment for the reasons above. Clear description of the size of the drink and the freshness of the food. Server forgot about 2 orders in our party, admitted it then brought those orders out when everyone was finished eating. this was our second visit to Mexican Rock. on our first, we were underwhelmed but decided to return, give it another chance as allegedly, this restaurant is owned and operated by those with another, successful, in the Boone area. We remain underwhelmed. A couple of simple tacos (carnitas and pollo) were unimpressive and frankly dry. The cheese quesadilla we prepare for children at home frankly surpasses that from this venue where the cheese was almost imperceptible. And it was not clear whether the quesadilla came with or without rice and beans. And service could use some improvement. For now, this will be our second and last visit to Mexican Rock. read more

Hoping this review helps the new owners... We really wanted this meal to be yummy as they are the only Mexican restaurant in town that's open. The restaurant has only been up and running less than a week, so we knew service could be slow. Our server was so nice, Maria. She apologized a few times for delays and food mixups, but again, we knew what we were going into ahead of time. For us, chips and salsa are a staple for a Mexican restaurant, and sadly, the chips here are hard and taste well done, almost burned, and the salsa tastes like, and looks like, tomato purée. We ordered two lunch combos to try a few things. We had a ground beef taco and chicken enchilada, and a chicken burrito and ground beef chalupa. Nothing came with beans, just hefty portions of almost mushy rice. We ordered beans on the side and they were delicious! The burrito was also good. The chalupa was missing it's meat altogether but Maria brought us a side of ground beef to add on top. Sadly, the ground beef had almost no flavor, along with the taco. The enchilada was decent but had too much red sauce. The sauce was spicy, which we like, but not everyone will like the heat. The guacamole that came with our meal was obviously not homemade, it was watery, like out of a container. Chips, salsa and guac should really be on point at a Mexican restaurant. Hoping over time that the food improves. We want the restaurant to succeed but they need to make some changes on the food side of things. read more

We stayed away from Mexican Rock due to neighbors reviews. Finally went tonight. Tacos were delivered to our table and we immediately told server they were not what we ordered. He left the food on our table and went to kitchen to check out the issue. He returned and told us the food on our table was not ours. He promptly picked both plates up and delivered them to the couple next to us!!!!!! He was very kind and apologetic, but I'm thinking this is a health department violation. Wonderful service on a Sunday at 1:30pm. We split the chicken fajitas, which was a huge portion. We STILL had leftovers! The chicken had excellent flavor and was perfectly cooked (very common for chicken to be overcooked in fajitas!). The corn tortillas seemed house-made and were very light fluffy, and fresh. Only ranked four stars instead of five due to very bland table salsa, though it was better after spicing it up using hot sauce provided at the table.
