Hubby saw this on yelp and we were in the area on a Thursday and hit the jackpot. They sell chicharron everyday, but on Thursdays they also sell chicharron with meat. We bought some of each and was not disappointed. Both items were fresh and not overly greasy or too salty. I made guacamole and ate it with the chicharron. DELICIOUS~!!!! The carnitas was really tasty and fresh too... moist on the inside and crispy on the outside. We had some of the tamales and I was disappointed. They were small and the masa not the smooth or tasty. When you ask them why the letter grade goes down they don't care and say go elsewhere. Local gem! Traditional flavors galore and a family favorite. We have been making early morning trips to this spot for pan dulcé and the La Moderna Cherished Dinner Roll, wow! And the tip of the day is early, get here early or get nothing as the locals know that unless you place an order for pick up you might not pick up! These rolls for holiday hams or just carnita tortas are soft and the size of a bollio, with the consistency of that of a dinner roll. But wait there's more, tamales, carnitas, cabeza de Chivo and fresh salsa as well some staples necessary for completing or complementing you meal plan. I was very exito try this place. I had seen an ad on Fb about this Bakery and right the next day I drove an hour to try the TAMALES. I ended up Belmore than I had planned because I wanted to try everything. I get there and I'm received by no other than the lady on the Video who made me fall in love with Sus Tamales she was soooo rude nothing to do with the person I saw on fb. She was just very rude I've never been there so I'm asking her about the Carnitas and the bolillos ect. She was so annoyed that she had someone else get my orderm i ended up buying 2dz tamales, carnitas, beans, bread, salsa etc. I didn't let her attitude get to me. Besides I did drive over an hour to try this. Neway... If your going to put your face on something, at least pay the part. The tamales weren't all that honestly. This place is my favorite for pan dulce in Whitttier. If you come early in the morning the bread is so soft and delicious. The must have is the chocolate concha. The tamales are also the best around. During the holiday season, they will take large orders too. They also have very good champurado. I love this place. read more

Bought several dozens from here for the first time. They were out of pork so we bought cheese/chicken/chile, cheese/chile and beef. All were delicious except the beef - they were dry. Will buy the others again and will go back to try the pork. Prices are reasonable and service is wonderful...thank you for that. Parking is problematic when they are busy. Tamale review only. In my quest for tamales, closer to home, I may have found a winner. This tiny storefront makes good use of all the space it has. There's an area for pan dulce, drinks, market items, and the cashier. I arrived at 9AM, and there was a line out the door. I picked up a dozen red chile pork tamales ($19), and was helped by a courteous member of their staff. My transaction went on without a hitch. There was no attitude or rudeness nor did I witness any during my time here. Everyone was in the New Year's Eve spirit. The tamale itself was solid. Masa was well-seasoned, though a tad heavy/stiff. The filling was very nice with a bit of chipotle-ancho kick. My only complaint was that there wasn't an even distribution of sauce and pork...all the sauce was on one end of the tamale and all the pork was on the other end. I only ate one, so I'm going to chalk it up as an anomaly...but if mixed altogether, it's a pretty good tamale. read more

La Moderna used to be the only local bakery, bread was delicious, but customer service was always less than desirable. Last week, my sister and I went to buy 2 lbs of carnitas. The bakery has always provided a small container of salsa per pound of carnitas. However, upon paying (we were also purchasing pan dulce, bolillos,sodas, chips) I noticed that the worker was only giving us ONE container of salsa instead of two. I mentioned it to the lady & she argued that it was now "one salsa container per every other pound of salsa". On the spot, she seemed to have changed their "policy" on the former one salsa per ever lb of carnitas they always had. She added, "if you want another salsa, you'll have to pay for it"!! (With a BAD attitude and IN FRONT OF NUMEROUS CUSTOMERS). The final draw was when she said to us "YOU DON'T HAVE TO BUY THE CARNITAS, YOU KNOW. WE ARE NOT GIVING YOU ANY MORE SALSA"! I told her, "You're right about that". I left the food on the counter and left the bakery. The bakery worker lost about a $45 sale because she refused to give me the additional $1.50 salsa that was due to us. We've been customers for over 30 years there. She kept her salsa, but she lost a customer for life!! read more

I love this place. I have literally been coming here my whole life. Its really tiny and can be SUPER busy, esp on the weekends. The pan (bread) here is very good and super cheap, so what's not to love? Also, since my family is awesome in so many ways, but somehow the tamale making gene skipped us, we buy our holiday tamales here as well. My personal fave is of course, pork, red or green, both good. The masa is flavorful and moist, and in the right proportion of masa to filling which is very important in a tamal. I once took my ABC eating buddy here (she loved it) but she wondered why people came with pots? They also have menudo on the weekends which you can be eco-friendly (and supermex) and bring your very own pot! Well not a good first impression! Went in to buy some Bolillo's..out! Went in to buy some tamales...out! Went in to buy some Carnitas....out! Went in to buy some pork rinds.....out! They pretty much only had sweet breads...we just went to the bakery so we had no need for sweets. Got some gauc & omg do not buy unless you want to go to the ER! Took a tiny taste and WHAM....Like someone torched my insides. My son even had a hard time with it. The funny thing when you first taste it your like, man it is so good them your mouth is set on fire???? They have the best tamales! I always ask my boyfriend to stop by this bakery and he always has to get at least a dozen tamales because they are just that great! They always fill it up with so much meat, whether you get pork or beef and the amount of masa is just right! Chicken tamales are only available Fri-Sun, but the others are available daily. I am lucky enough to have tasted many homemade tamales and La Moderna hits closest to home. Highly recommended for all tamale lovers. This review is so overdue but better late than never right? I ordered some tamales from here for a Christmas party I was hosting at my house. When I called, the guy that answered was a bit of a smart ass but I am one too so I won't base my review on that. I did, however, find it stupid that he made me recite the menu before informing me they only made three types of tamales during the week. Well thanks for not saving my breath dude! When I went to pick the order up a few days after, my GPS literally couldn't find the place. I went in circles and circles and circles before I figured it out. This of course is not their fault. Technology can be a BUZZ kill. Once there, my order was ready, I paid about $32 for two dozen of tamales and went on my way. Now generally I think that that is a lot to pay for a dozen of tamales but reading how AMAZE BALLS they were I figured it was worth it. I liked them. Won't say I LOVED them. They were ok. Nothing special, definitely not worth $16 a dozen but I think if you need tamales on the go, this can be your spot. Haven't been back since but maybe I'll go on the weekend when they have more variety of tamales available and other stuff on the menu. read more

Came for the Tamales based on previous reviews. Let me start off by saying, I like my tamales like I like my men; big, juicy, and meaty. Well these tamales are not it. Red Pork are tasty but the tamales are somewhat dry and small. Didnt care for the green pork and I lean more for green tamales then red ones but here the red have more taste. I'm going to chime in La Moderna does indeed have the best empanadas (the lemon and pumpkin are my favorites) and chocolate and strawberry pan dulce. Their tamales were a dozen for 14 or so dollars, so I picked up some. The green chile wasn't exactly my favorite, and they always seem to be out of my favorite tamales, the sweet ones! Dang! The red pork is excellent. If I were to give it a critique, it doesn't "hold" so well if you happen to refrigerate 'em, but even four days after my initial purchase, they were still very yummy. Don't really expect this bakery to be manicured like 85 Celsius. It's a little cramped, just a touch dirty (I'm only mentioning this if you're a phobe who doesn't like sharing tongs or trays; it's not inherently a problem because they do keep it clean), but the line moves quickly. If you have the cash, you're in and out no problem. If you use debit, you wait just a little while. The employees are very sweet and helpful. I've been coming here for years on Saturday's and Sunday's for tamales, pan dulce and menudo. It's a neighborhood staple in the area. I think their business has grown so much in the last few years that their service has not been able to keep up with the demand. Several times now I get home eager to eat my tamales and they aren't fully cooked, which after finding a parking space and standing in line smelling the delicious aromas, is a HUGE disappointment. They make the softest bolios that you have to start eating them as soon as you get to your car and by the time you have gotten home you have already woofed down 2 so make sure you order a few extra. Now, I also need to mention the tamale Nazi that works there, I thinks she is someone's wife or something, whatever you do, don't look her in the eye, do not speak to her unless she speaks first and make sure you answer her questions specifically to what she asks you. read more
