I've eaten at La Mesa a number of times in the last few years, but after this most recent visit, I told my partner, "We don't need to return here anytime soon."
It's not that it's overtly bad, most of the time the staff is friendly, the facility clean and the menu is quite varied. But almost everything I've tried has been just meh.
We were quickly seated in the bar, which was a nice change of pace as La Mesa seems to be a "family" favorite of many and the dining room can get very loud.
We ordered margaritas and received the standard basket of chips and salsa. I don't know if the chips are made in-house, they had the texture/thickness to suggest they are, but by thickness, I mean they were thick! And flavorless. And exceedingly crunchy, while at the same time suggesting staleness.
I ordered a tilapia taco and an al pastor taco, as a change up to my usual sauce- or cheese-laden choices. I really appreciated the opportunity to mix it up, and you can do it with a three- or four- taco option, too, I believe. (But two tacos was really plenty.)
My partner was really branching out with Molcajete - a bowl of steak, chorizo, chicken and shrimp in a "special hot sauce." It's almost like a super chunky, meaty soup, but as we discovered, the broth was a little too spicy for abundant slurping. It is served with tortillas, so you can take the chunks and wrap and eat that way. Everything was nicely cooked, not overly so. The shrimp was perfect, and everything carried just the right amount of flavor from the broth. The chorizo was broken into tiny pieces, like ground beef, so that's a little more difficult to scoop. The description indicated the soup was "garnished with Queso Franco," which suggested something like a delicate sprinkle. However, what we found were two or three finger-size logs floating in the bowl. Not as yummy or appetizing.
As for my tacos, I couldn't decide which to start with, thinking I should save the best for last. I thought that would be the tilapia, so I started with the al pastor -- which was delicious! Tender pork, nicely blended flavors, with just a hint of pineapple at just the right times.
Just in case, I stopped halfway in, and switched to the tilapia. The fish was a solid chunk/slice beneath a nice cabbage slaw, but the fish both smelled and tasted fishy, which is not a big draw. I tried a couple of bites, in case it was just the switch from pineapple that made the fishiness so pronounced. I couldn't do it. Thumbs down on the tilapia taco.
Back to the al pastor, which came with rice and beans. I like when the side rice has veggies mixed in -- corn, carrot shreds, peas -- and another plus, it was piping hot! as were the refried beans, which isn't always the case at other places I've been. Anyway, happy ending to my meal, I loved this taco!
Margaritas were delicious -- not too sweet, good strength, and I may have found a new favorite tequila! read more
