Bookguy, Big Bro, and I stopped in at the GI Forum for lunch. Originally established in Texas to provide support for the rights of Hispanics in the American military, it has a plethora of veteran resources cited on their website. For those of us who are non-military, it has become a great place to eat and is open to the general public. We were seated quickly, received menus, and ordered. My interest was in the toad taco, but when the waitress told me the chili in it was very hot, I opted for a bean taco. Bookguy was disappointed to find that the very hot chili was the only kind. We had previously ordered chili from Nettie's and missed the hot warning so we decided to heed it this time. Bookguy ended up with shrimp and fries. Big Bro ordered a huge beef dinner plate of a taco, enchilada, tostada, with rice and beans included. We also ordered mixed chips and guac. Big Bro had a margarita which looked good to me, but I was driving. I liked the taco which was generously stuffed with beans, lettuce, cheese, and diced tomatoes. I added the salsa from the table. It was excellent. With the chips and flavorful guac, I had a just right lunch. Bookguy said his shrimp and fries were just ok. Big Bro thought everything in his meal was very good, except he wasn't sold on the rice. He wanted another margarita but decided against it and said he should have ordered the grande size. It's amazing to me that the prices here are so reasonable. It's good for families on a budget. They do charge extra for using a credit card. It's not fancy, but it's clean, bright and inviting. Old school atmosphere with great food at a great price. I really love their tacos with the fried shells.

This place represents the south of Omaha in a great way. The location is great + they have a huge parking lot. I wish their hours were greater as sometimes I can't always make their open times. They have great chips and salsa and everyone has always been kind when we have gone. Great for large groups or even just a quick spot for lunch. read more

Food: it was okay, I have had better. Ordered beef and bean burrito, all beef no beans. Service: very slow. However was in a large group and the place was real busy, but it took forever to get waited on and to get the food. Margarita was good. Plan to go back but not with a big group. Ambiance: great! We went on a Tuesday. They do have margaritas and tostadas on special for Tuesday. I'm not a fan of tostadas. I find them difficult to eat. I ordered an enchilada, which was good but one of the smallest ones I've ever had. We did split some chips and queso between 5 of us so I was satisfied and not overly stuffed. I had 2 margaritas that barely gave me a buzz. Service was not as prompt as some others have posted . 2 waitresses were working and there were maybe six occupied tables. GI Forum is what I'd call the first wave of Mexican food in Omaha. Other examples are El Bee's, Romeo's and Fernando's. What they all have in common is a large quantity of fairly bland food with lots of cheese. There are so many other Mexican places now in Omaha, you'd be advised to go to the second and third wave restaurants. The first wave restaurants haven't changed their recipes since the 70s or 80s. read more

Good food and reasonably priced, especially the weekly specials. Unfortunately, we weren't as impressed with the food on our most recent visit. The burger bun (kids) was nearly rock hard in some places and not from being toasted. The tacos and chili were good as usual. I thought they used to serve chips and salsa when seated, but we didn't get any. We didn't see a waitress again to ask until our food came out and by then we were over it. The service overall was ok. Not terrible, but definitely could have been better. I'm sure none of this will stop us from going back since this place is kind of a staple in Omaha for Mexican-American food, but we probably won't be in a hurry to go anytime soon. read more

In town visiting my father, who told me that this 'is THE place ' for excellent Mexican Food. We had dinner there tonight and I was extremely satisfied with our entire dining experience. The restaurant is decorated in cheerful, welcoming colors . The food was DELICIOUS- with extremely reasonable prices. Our server was great too! The entire bill for four of us was about $30.00- a bargain in my opinion, for authentic Mexican Food. My father really appreciated the handicap ramp access too! read more

Great lunch place in South Omaha with fantastic puffy tacos, enchiladas, and lots of other Mexican goodies. Went here last week with some friends and forgot how good and affordable this place is. I'd recommend going on a Thursday for their taco specials, one of the best deals in town IMO. Also a shout out to their wait staff, some of the fastest and most friendly I've come across. read more

American GI Forum is actually a non-profit veteran family organization. It has an operational restaurant that is open to all. The outside of the building is decorated with a number of military related murals. You enter from the back of the building and proceed down the stairs to enter the main dining room. If you have ever been to any of the fish frys at the local churches in Omaha, then that is what the dining room looks like. Simple tables and chairs along with a bar. There is military paraphernalia all around the walls with a number of historical items posted. Menu is what is best defined as Tex-Mex. We ordered the two taco dinner and the three taco combo with rice and beans. Taco shells are actually fried, which is a bit different for me, but they were good. Tried the beef and chicken tacos. Personal preference was the chicken. Prices are very reasonable....cheap even. Two meals with drinks came to a total of $12.34 cents not counting tip. Worthwhile for you to drop in, try the food, and check out the history on the walls of the facility. Oh and big screen TV in the main dining room with more TVs behind the bar for your viewing pleasure. read more

I have been here 2 times in about 6 years & both times the food was awesome. Waitresses are friendly & fast & the price is great for the amount of food your gonna get. Easy to switch up or substitute items & had no mistakes with our food. It is extremely disappointing to find out how the meat is handled in the back. I've eaten their tacos in the past and at the time I came to like them and ate them frequently because they admittedly have good taste, but this means absolutely nothing - especially since I've had issues in the past with food tasting good even when it has been contaminated. I come to find out straight from a former employee that worked in the back, that the people here handle the meat in the same sink that the dirty dishes go in. The sink is never pre-washed before the meat goes in it. When this former employee talked to the other employee (the one handling the meat) about the meat being contaminated, the guy handling the meat dismissed the former employee's statements and claimed that cooking the meat would eradicate the bacteria on it. This place is an evident health hazard, and should be treated as such by staying away. Do not eat here under any circumstance whatsoever - I don't care if it tastes good or not, or if your friends like it and tell you to try it out... As I said at the top, food can still taste good even when it has been contaminated. Just because it tastes good and that other people's immune systems are strong enough to fight off the bacteria laced in the meat, doesn't mean that it won't make you sick. read more

I was hesitant to go to the GIF after they were recently closed down by the health department. They previously received a "fair" rating from the health department, which is the lowest rating they will give and still allow you to remain open. Apparently they fell below that and were shut down. Yikes!! I saw they recently opened again, so I contacted the health department myself to inquire about their improvements, if any. Here is the email reply I received; "I have completed three visits to the facility since their closure. After their closure the facility required food safety training for all food contact employees and hired a new kitchen manger. Since taking these steps the facility has done an excellent job. During their last inspection they received an excellent rating. Their next inspection will be due in May." I was so glad I contacted them so I knew they have made major improvements. We stopped in to eat last night and they also did some remodeling to the place...new floor, painted walls, more TV's, etc. The food and service were spot on! For all you people who were like me and hesitant to go back...get going! They are back and health department approved with an "Excellent" rating! They also have a new menu. Looks like it's temporary for now while maybe they are working on items? read more

Joined a friend for lunch here the other day. Seems to be a south Omaha staple for sure. Classic VFW feel and friendly service making you feel at home. Daily specials and full menu of Mexican American dishes. I enjoyed three enchiladas (beef chicken and cheese) and some chips and guacamole. The pasole was incredible and full of flavor. Highly recommend this hominey based soup. Prices seemed appropriate and atmosphere was as expected. read more

Lunch invitation from friends who realized I had never eaten here before. I had chili, puffy bean taco and puffy chicken taco. Decent food. I most liked the chili. For puffy tacos I will rank Tasty Tacos in Des Moines as my favorite. There are others with puffy tacos in the Omaha area that I need to try, however. The chips and sauce did nothing for me, but I don't like filling up with them when I order an entree. read more

Wow. What a great place. My wife and I went here 2 weeks ago on a Friday night. It looks like it's been recently remodeled. I would say the restaurant reminds me of a church basement, simple tables and chairs. The exception would be the nice bar and flatscreens along the north wall. My wife had a ground beef taco, and a chicken enchilada. Both were very good, and very inexpensive. I had the carnitas tacos, which were utterly amazing. I haven't had better anywhere. The refried beans and rice were fabulous as well. My wife will get a meal next time so she can eat her own rice instead of 1/2 of mine! We also had margaritas, which were really very good, and I don't even really like margaritas. Everyone was very friendly, and the food was quickly prepared, very inexpensive and most importantly, delicious. It's highly recommended!!! read more

I've been hearing about this place from my family in Omaha for quite a while, so it was the first place I made them take me when I was recently in town. The food was delicious, the service was prompt, our server was friendly and made us feel very welcome, and the prices were unbeatable. The total for our party of five was around fifty bucks, and we all got chips and cheese, entrees, and margaritas a-plenty. After hearing all the hype, I finally found myself close enough to the GI Forum to give it a try. The interior was nicer than I expected. It had some decor, flat screen tv's and paint on the walls. All-in-all, it wasn't so bad. As far as food is concerned, we ordered beef tacos, four chips, and cheese sauce. The tacos were pretty good. They aren't great but they do remind me a bit of Senor Matia's. You can't beat the price at just under $2. They are good sized and the fried shells are tasty. The chips were also pretty good but the cheese was something you'd get from a movie theatre. It was a solid lunch for $15 but I doubt that I'd ever drive across town to eat here. Having said that, if I were nearby and hungry, I wouldn't hesitate to drop by for a couple of cheap tacos. read more

I simply love this place!! They have the BEST tacos in Omaha by far! They are filled with a lot of meat and fix-ins for a perfect taco AND they come in a deep fried shell. Also, their chili is the bomb! It's not for the fair weather spicy food eater. It's definitely HOT! The atmosphere is nice and the wait staff is above average for a local restaurant. The downside to Taco Thursdays...it's more crowded than a church on doomsday and I'm amazed the wait staff keep up with it like they do. The clientele on Taco Thursday is mixed...builders, retirees, soccer moms, businessmen, Airforce Pilots, and even the mayor of Omaha has been spied here. This is just one of those things you must try if you haven't, just to check it out if nothing else. It's more than likely you're going to be waiting on a table, so don't be in a big hurry. Very good "Americanized" Mexican food here. Guaranteed you will leave full and happy. Tried quite a few menu items over the years, but the tacos and rice is a solid combo. Chips and dips are also all great. Pop in on a Thursday for the taco special. Come early though, because it gets packed!! Service is usually good, but they can get busy and a touch slow. We ate a Saturday lunch there today and had the chicken flauta plate, Stacy's plate and sopapillas. Ordered a Diet Coke and got a Mr Pibb, or something. Not the same thing. A woman a couple tables behind me apparently didn't like the Diet Coke she got in the mix-up, either. The food took a while to arrive, but slow service seems to be a common thread in these reviews. The food was very good. The sopapillas arrived with a scoop of vanilla ice cream which surprised my lactose-intolerant wife. So I had to eat all the ice cream. Score! read more
