    Bed bug bites!
    Elaine M.

Avoid This Hotel - Unprofessional, Unhygienic, and Disrespectful Experience Upon check-in, a very nice and friendly woman at the front desk told us we were in room 313 and handed us a key labeled accordingly. However, all the paperwork she gave us listed room 213. When I pointed out the discrepancy, she brushed it off and said, "Oh, the night guy who does this never messes up--just go ahead to 313." We dragged all our heavy bags to room 313, only to be horrified when we opened the door and discovered the room was already occupied--someone's belongings were everywhere, and we could hear people in the bathroom. Mortified, we immediately shut the door and returned to the front desk. The woman said, "Oops, we gave you the wrong key. You're actually in 213." It was our first time visiting Cape May and we were only staying for a night, we chose this hotel for its proximity to downtown--we planned to walk around in the morning and didn't intend to go to the beach. When asked if we wanted beach tags, my husband declined, and I said yes just in case, although we knew we likely wouldn't use them. The front desk clerk handed us a packet of paperwork and maps--apparently the tags were included, but I never actually saw them. It's baffling that she didn't simply check the system, which would have clearly shown that 313 was already occupied. I travel a lot for work and have never had this type of experience. This was a slightly frustrating start to our stay, but we decided to not make it a big deal. We brought our things to room 213, unpacked again, and tried to settle in. The next morning, I woke up covered in itchy red bumps on my arms, legs, stomach, and ankles. I immediately showered and scrubbed with soap. Later that day, after returning home and visiting urgent care in the evening, I was told the bites were likely from bedbugs. We are now dealing with the added stress and expense of ensuring they don't spread it into our home. That same morning of checking out, the hotel contacted us to say we hadn't returned the two beach tags and charged $250 to my credit card. When we alerted the office manager, Jessica, to the situation, I explained that we never used the beach tags, never saw them, and were never clearly told we'd be charged if they weren't returned. she responded by saying the person who gave us the tags "never makes mistakes," implying we must be lying. She stated she would watch the videos to see if the beach tags were actually handed to us. I was shocked by how rudely I was treated. I called her the next day after I went to urgent care to let her know about the bedbugs. She questioned why I hadn't reported the bites the day before. The answer is simple: I have a full-time job and wasn't able to go to urgent care until after work--which was the same day we checked out. I manage a team and work with Fortune 500 clients and was genuinely stunned by the complete lack of professionalism and courtesy shown by Jessica. Based on my experience, Jessica does not seem equipped for a role that involves managing people or customer service. She was dismissive, unprofessional, and unwilling to take accountability. Between the disorganized check-in, the bedbug infestation, and the charge for beach tags, I can confidently say I will never stay at this hotel again. I don't often write negative reviews--in fact, this is only the second one I've ever written--but I feel a strong responsibility to warn others. This experience was disappointing, stressful, and completely unacceptable. Please think twice before booking here!!!

I wanted to share our disappointing experience at La Mer Beachfront Resort last weekend. We had seen so many positive reviews of the hotel and were excited to stay there. We woke up on Friday morning to this. It turns out a child in the room above us tried to flush an object which caused the toilet to overflow... no big deal, children do that! We were not upset about that at all. What was very upsetting was that the hotel handled it with absolutely no urgency or professionalism. We were the ones who had to contact the front desk who essentially said "we know, we have to deal with upstairs first." Fair, I guess, but 4 of us had no ability to use our only bathroom (even the sink was unusable because of how much water was on the floor and how it was splattering). No one even thought to send somebody to at least try to mitigate the flooding in our bathroom until I called a second time and reiterated that this was urgent. An employee came with a bag of beach towels and dried it up. At that point around a half hour had passed and the water was still coming down. I went to the front desk and said that if the issue wasn't resolved, you know, now, we needed a new room or to have the rest of our stay refunded so we could stay elsewhere. The bathroom was unusable and now unsanitary. They said nothing could be done until the manager arrived. It was around 8:45 am, so it wouldn't be much of a wait, but I couldn't help but wonder how this would've been handled if it had been 5:45 am. Incidentally, the single women's bathroom in the lobby was also being cleaned then, so it was also not usable. Probably an hour after the toilet water rainstorm started, it stopped. Someone did come to dry it up, although they missed a bunch of spots. No one came to clean it aside from normal housekeeping. For our troubles, we were offered a $100 refund on the first nights stay. But it didn't end there. At checkout on Sunday, there was no record of the credit in our file. I was told no manager would be in at all that day - I said that was kind of crazy, and they said "but it's Sunday" - and so they had to text her at home. The employees who were there didn't have the authority to issue the nominal credit. I left and waited for an email because there was no telling when the manager would reply. I spoke to her after and she said she arrived at work a few minutes after I left, which is odd... I don't know why they'd text her (I saw them do it) if she was about to walk in. Overall, a really disappointing experience from a hotel that brands itself as high end and luxurious, and is not inexpensive to stay at. We will not be back. Edit: in response to management's reply below, we declined the offer for the remaining two nights of our stay to be refunded because we were not aware of any other property that could accommodate us on immediate notice. A quick walk to town revealed many "no vacancy" signs, and we did not want to pack up and go home. Management did not offer any help in finding us alternate accommodations, including at the other property they own. We had also spent a large part of our first morning dealing with this issue and did not wish to waste any more of our vacation, which was only two full days. I'm unsure how the hotel considers sharing my experience - which they are steadfast that they handled properly - to be an attempt to ruin its reputation. I was with 3 friends during our trip and any of them can confirm my recollection of the events. I told two managers during our stay that I planned to share a review everywhere reviews are permitted, and no one seemed to mind. I did post reviews on 8/14 - and the response was overwhelming in the Cape May Live Facebook group, with dozens of people saying they'd never stay at La Mer again, that the situation was unsanitary and poorly handled, and encouraging me to post reviews everywhere I could, pursue a full refund, report to the BBB, even alert the news or sue them. There was not a single comment in support of the hotel and I suspect it was this large negative response that made hotel management go berserk. On 8/15, after the reviews were posted, I attempted to contact the hotel multiple times to reach a resolution. I stated that I wanted a refund and if I didn't hear back by EOD, I would look into pursuing a credit card chargeback or small claims case; that conversation precedes every credit card dispute and to call it "tantamount to extortion" is ludicrous. The reviews were already posted before I asked for the refund. I eventually received a few rude texts from Nicole and later spoke with the hotel's GM, Francesca, who was irate and apoplectic, snarky, would not listen to my perspective, insulted me personally numerous times, and then hung up on me. If only they were as interested in providing us with a sanitary space as they are now in trying to intimidate me.

My husband and I booked a one-night stay here on relatively short notice -- and serendipitously as one of the few available options. I called the day of to let them know we would be checking in around 10pm, which they appreciated (as a general tip, you should always do this when checking in late anywhere -- even if your room is guaranteed). The woman at the front desk when we arrived was very professional, polite, and helpful. Check-in and check-out were a breeze. Other hotel staff were friendly. The lobby was clean and beautifully decorated and grounds were well-maintained. Our room was spacious and nearly immaculate. Everything worked well and was in excellent condition. Towels were nice, shower was hot and drained properly, and the bed was comfortable. We did not try any of the food on-site, and realize our experience would have been different had it been on-season; but based on our brief visit, I do recommend this resort if you're in the area. We would definitely welcome the opportunity to stay here again!

We had a wonderful stay at La Mer. Originally for one overnight, just a quick getaway, but decided to stay another night. From the moment we checked in, the Front Desk Manager Jess and front desk Jason were so attentive and accommodating. We had a slight issue with our ac when we got in our room, but maintenance help by Guy was right on it. Very respectful and efficient had it working in no time. We had an ocean view room with balcony that was clean and spacious. There was a nice size pool and bikes. We took a wonderful walk to some restaurants and shops. The onsite restaurant was very nice and we enjoyed a nice dinner one evening and the next we sat at the bar with a nice bartender to have a drink and dessert. The beach staff and bartender were all so hospital and nice. I highly recommend staying here and will be back. Planning a girls' weekend next. Thank you, La Mer Staff, for a much needed relaxing time.

Stayed a few days throughout the week for work. Apparently, the summer season didn't start until 5/6 so the Pier House Restaurant, that is attached or right next to the hotel, was not open. So you have to walk quite a distance, or drive to any nearest eateries. Had the limited Beachfront view. Meaning, there is a balcony from which you could sort of see the beach lol. Beach is right across the street however. I needed some extra soap and that was brought to my room. Had 2 queens, but there was only 1 set of soap/shampoo/conditioner for the entire room. Kitchenette, Microwave and fridge were nice. Kitchenette also has hardware utensils/glasses to use. Standard cable channels. You can control your own AC/Heat in the room. Free parking. Park In only in certain areas. Small lobby. Nice receptionist. This resort is also at the far end of the standard and crammed hotels/motels/inns so it was convenient to not get stuck in all of the general traffic. It's also next /within Victorian neighborhood - houses. Pretty to drive/walk around and view these large houses

Such a wonderful stay here for our anniversary. The room was so wonderful, updated, and cozy with a beachfront view! Check-in was smooth. Great experience.

I've stayed at La Mer many times. This time we booked this room last minute during peak season and the front desk/ reception was very helpful and friendly. The restaurant on premises is great for breakfast, drinks, light fare, and dinner. There is live entertainment on the weekends. My only disappointment was that the pool had very limited hours during such a busy time of year. It opened at 10am and closed at 5 or 6. I could see this being the case in May or September but not in August. They took the water basketball court out, thank goodness! but it got very crowded and noisy in the afternoon with lots of little kids whose parents didn't care if they screamed their heads off. The company A-Z bike rentals who usually rents bikes on premises was sold out, so make reservations ahead of time if you'd like. Nevertheless, we had a good time and will most likely stay at La Mer again.

I've stayed at their Diamond Beach location, but this was my first time here. Let me mention the most enjoyable employees first. Chet was at the Front Desk when I checked out. He was by far the most friendly person I interacted with at the front desk. Some of the females were a bit...... unfriendly. If you chose to work in a customer service position it's probably best to have a sunny disposition. I think Cape May needs to address that. Tarik/Tajik? He was the young men who helped EVERYBODY get their chairs and umbrellas to the beach. He was WORKING! Yet, he always remained pleasant. And lastly, the gentleman driving the shuttle was very pleasant. He picked us up/dropped us off about 4 times. He was also servicing the Mahalo (and Icona resort) so he had his work cut out for him! We REALLY appreciated him as it was pouring one night and he came to pick us up and bring us back to the hotel. That amenity is CLUTCH! Overall, it's a nice hotel. Clean, a beautiful small bathroom, a cute little kitchen area, a small pool, and parking. Somebody mentioned the room was small, but to me it was a decent size. The balcony however, now THAT was small. Just enough room for the 2 of us to sit out there side by side and chill. I did see larger balconies out by the pool (facing the beach) so I guess you get what you pay for (larger room perhaps; suite). The AC however, is loud. It's not a window unit, but one of those wall units. I'm glad I brought my earplugs, otherwise I probably wouldn't have slept. And speaking of sleep, the bed is not what I am used to when I visit a hotel; especially a higher end boutique hotel. It was uncomfortable to me. My partner however, had no problem sleeping and did not feel it was uncomfortable. So.... roll the dice. The pool is tiny. Or shall I say, smaller than the size you will expect it to be. But it works. I chilled in the pool for 3 days. It's a good spot to people watch and break from the sand of the beach. And once we parked, we didn't have to move the car. Cape May is very pedestrian friendly. We walked and rode bikes every where we went. I love it. It was a great getaway. Check it out.

The location of this place is close to the beach & all the restaurants & shops so fantastic location. Only negative is trying to find parking & the bikes that they give you to use - there was no way to move the seat down so I couldn't ride a bike (sucks to be short!). Anyway - definitely a place I will visit again.

One of the only pet friendly hotels on the island, the location was very close in proximity to our whale/dolphin sightseeing cruise (that Jimmy my pup and I enjoyed very much), and was overall very ideal for the two of us. We will DEFINITELY be back soon next season!

Advance impression was excellent - I called several times with questions and Lena was always personable, knowledgeable and patient. The tri-fecta of customer service! Pulling up in front was happy to see pictures matched actual (as we all have sadly learned, not always the case), check-in was a breeze (again with Lena) and enjoyed a humorous back and forth with Franco. Into the room and - no major disappointments. Perhaps slightly smaller than I expected, but super clean, nicely appointed, tile bath, nicer linens that weren't threadbare and a mini-kitchen - micro, middle size refrig, and coffee pot. Just enough. In fact perfect for a 3 night stay. A nice pool (again seemed a tad small, but am seeing that's the norm here, so perhaps it's my expectations that are the wrong size!), a BBQ/picnic area out back, as well as a a laundry/ice machine room. Consistently clean and neat. Everywhere. Just exceptionally well kept up. Slightly outside of 'downtown', but still walkable.... and far less $$$ with far less hustle and bustle. IMO, a good trade off. Very pleased with this choice. We called for an extra blanket and it was delivered in under 5 minutes. Oh, a parking space, beach chairs and towels come with the room, too! Rocking chairs out front, tables and chairs out back let you enjoy some outdoor space - and the pool of course! Very nicely (and thoughtfully) laid out! Note: they have several room types. We chose #4 - king bed, family suite, no pets. But some have full kitchens, some allow pets, various bed sizes, etc. Certainly a room style for everyone. 'House Rules' are appropriate, enforced, and enhance your stay. We'll be back....

They have great room amenities (like pour-over coffee and great bathroom products), and a really cute rooftop. The real stars here are the staff though- they're locals with tons of knowledge and recommendations for things to see/do in the area. They treat you like an old friend and are so welcoming- really can't recommend this place enough! Oh, and they're dog friendly which is super nice!

(No hate to pups- just want to highlight the cleanliness). The lobby staff is so friendly. There's coffee available in the morning around 9:15, and beer/wine available around 4p. Nice added perks! The roof deck is a fun feature as well, and the bikes (first come first serve reservation system). Minor drawbacks: there's no true outside shower, but there's a hose for your feet in the ice machine closet. There are rinsing stations by the beach too, but not near the entrance where you can rent your complimentary chairs/ umbrellas on queen street. Also, parking is tight and some guests are not conscientious of the parking situation. During our stay, there were multiple cars taking up two spaces in the very small lot. Overall, great spot!
