The staff was great. Apparently, they have added live music in their connecting restaurant (I wasn't informed when reserving the room), but they put the singer right next to the hotel guests doors which is way too loud. Add that to screaming children and noise from people walking in front of your window while yelling over the music and you have anxiety. They started the music at 1pm on Saturday and it went until 9pm. 8 hours of loud music does not make for a restful visit. Management needs to rethink this type of entertainment and where they station it on the hotel grounds. read more

Incredibly accommodating. I got sick the week of our reservation, and the manager allowed me to move my reservation to the next week even though they typically don't do that. They allowed me to check in earlier than 4pm, had a pack and play set up for our baby, and even offered late check out. I'm sure this wouldn't be the case during peak season, but it was lovely for our fall trip. They even checked in numerous times via text message during our stay to see if we needed anything. The rusty nail is on site and we had great drinks by the fire at night, and a great breakfast in the morning. We will definitely be returning! read more

My husband and I have stayed at the Beach Shack several times now and while we love the location, hotel itself, and everything about our stays, they have recently refused to change a reservation we made to a different date. We did not wish to cancel the reservation, we realized immediately after booking our reservation that our firm's mandatory charity day was during the dates we booked, so we were trying to move the reservation to the following weekend, which would result in us paying more for the room than the original reservation. The hotel refused to work with us or offer any flexibility regarding dates, even though they show availability for dates we wanted to change the reservation to online (which was still during NON-peak seasonal times). The only option they offered was to cancel our original reservation with NO REFUND and book a new reservation at full cost with NONE of the amount paid for the original reservation applied to the new reservation. I called within 24 hours of booking the original reservation and they still refused to accommodate us at all which I have never before experienced with a hotel. We will likely not be staying at the Beach Shack ever again which is a shame because we otherwise enjoyed it. Because of this, I will never recommend this hotel to anyone in the future. read more

Stayed two nights at the Beach Shack and was quite impressed with the room, it was clean and updated and nicely equipped. We didn't make use of the pool but did visit the restaurant Rusty Nail and found it good although they reserve the outdoor tables for dinners and people who are drinking only are restricted to the fire pits or bar. The check in and messaging prior to arriving was excellent and really gave the the impression that they truly were interested in providing a good service. The outside of the hotel is showing its age, but overall we enjoyed our stay and had no issues. read more

Ahhh good memories when I think about this location! Yes I was only there for two days but it was so lovely! The only issue I had was getting my key. When I first arrived the artist that I was there with had checked me in so my room could be ready for me. Well they had it under a special name and when I got there and presented that name they guy at the counter seemed a bit lost. After giving him a few seconds a light bulbs went off and I was off to my room...so not to bad. Once I made it to my room walking in was so pleasant! I love the King size bed and the decorations they had. Then to my surprise after passing the king sue bed there was the cutest bunk beds installed into the wall. Oh and that wasn't it, the bathroom was a full out party room if I must say. The whole bathroom is titled so you can shower with a few people in there if needed. They do have a mini bar inside your room as well. The bed had really nice linen, white and looked very clean. The pillows were perfect! I asked for firm pillows and they provided that perfectly as well! Oh there is also a mirror that is or a decent size next to the bed that I loved as well. They do have a pool but due to the weather while I was there I didn't visit it. I didn't have a balcony since I was on the first floor and the window to my bathroom showed the trash out back which wasn't so pretty but didn't bother me. My nights sleep was fantastic! I didn't hear people through the walls or have any other crazy things happen that would have effected it. The location of the hotel is a short walk across a street to the beach and there is also several places to eat right there as well! Look on yelp for the delicious breakfast places!! Oh and Rusty Nails has a dog menu if you decided to bring your fur babies and they are into trying something new! (*Didnt bring my dogs this go round so I am unsure the prices for pets to stay or if anything special comes along with it. *) I didn't stay long enough to see how house keeping cleans but for the two days I was there it was very pleasant! I booked our trip 2 + months in advance and was looking forward to spending some time on the beach in the sun. Sadly the weather had other plans for me and it rained nonstop Friday Saturday and Sunday or check out was for Monday and that was the only day that it didn't rain. I understand that the hotel cannot control the weather but being that it was a long holiday weekend I would've expected that they would have come up with some sort of events to do indoor. Since we live in New York we had to head home early and we were unable to enjoy the beach. I asked the staff multiple times for activities to do or places to go since I have a toddler and it's hard to keep her inside the room all day. But each time they said to go to Congress Hall and when I asked the staff at Congress Hall they said to use the board games. I was very disappointed to the point I wanted to just go back home on Sunday and when I asked if I could get a refund for the one night they said no. I was looking forward to this trip since it was our first trip in over 2 years but sadly it was one of our worst vacation. As far as Covid regulations there are none. Nobody is wearing a mask not even the staff or housekeepers. read more

We are staying in Cape May for the week... our first time down here for a family vacation! Someone we met on the beach recommended the Rusty Nail because you can sit on the sand outside to eat! They mentioned how the kids meal comes on a frisbee with a cookie! It sounded like a great idea! The atmosphere was about the only nice thing. The food was worse than my school cafeteria food. We got the Chips with Dip Trio as an app. The cheese was like cheese whiz. The guac and salsa were as if they were scooped out of a container from Wawa. My chicken tacos came without the queso fresco or avocado crema (I only ordered it without the black bean salsa). My husbands found 2 shells in his shrimp taco. My daughter's mac and cheese was smoky; therefore, she wouldn't eat any of it. I wish it were advertised that it was cooked that way and we would've ordered something else. It took about 15 minutes before we got greater at our table. It was 90 degrees out and so hot sitting in the sun without any water. The service was horrible. There were 2 times when we were out of water and had to wait an extremely long time before getting water. I waited a long time after the food was delivered before our server came to check on us and I could tell her my meal was so dry and I didn't eat it yet because it was missing that avocado crema and queso fresco. The service and food were beyond disappointing to the point where I took the time to leave a review. My husband said it was the worst $100 plus he's ever spent on a meal and he NEVER complains. If you want the "atmosphere" and only a drink maybe at the bar, you could try go there. read more

Stayed here for the weekend with our dog in the off season. The accommodations were great. Room is super cute and very clean, we had a king sized bed with a couch and double bunk with a gated area out front. Everyone was super friendly and accommodating. Ummm no. This was my third stay at The Beach Shack. The prior 2 times were awesome! The rooms have gone significantly down hill. I understand general wear and tear but our room was DIRTY! The bathroom door didn't shut. There was a spiderweb hanging out in the corner over the vanity light all 3 days we were there. And yes, they "clean" everyday. We also mentioned a questionable bedbug experience to management. They brushed it off and said "bugs come out like that this time of year." Nope. We're local enough. This was not a regular bug bite situation. Long story short- look behind the bed frame. Gross. Love cape may but will never stay at beach shack again. The staff/ service on the beach is great. The beach shack is cute hotel located on Beach Avenue in Cape May. Excellent location with ample parking available. The location has you within walking distance to so many venues, Washington Mall, the beach at the cove, attended beaches across the street and all of the fun dining Cape May provides. The Rusty Nail next door is owned by the same group, excellent bar with a solid menu and outdoor setting second to none in the area. Adirondack chairs, sand, ping pong, fire pit etc. My stay at the hotel started off on the wrong foot, check in time is 3pm. We arrived at 1pm and our room wasn't ready. The weather wasn't appropriate for the pool or the beach so we elected to hit Washington Mall....while the room was not ready it was made clear to us that we were more than welcome to park and use all their facilities. When we returned At 3:15 our room was still not ready.....not happy. Approximately 20 minutes later the room was ready and the woman at the front desk gave us a $25 voucher for the Rusty Nail which was an excellent gesture......take note business owners.....it's not the situation, it's how the situation is handled. The folks who run the Beach Shack are clearly on top of their game. The room was awesome, most if not all the rooms have been recently renovated. The rooms include a microwave, refrigerator, Keurig, and ice bucket. The room was clean and has the most comfortable mattress. We were afforded a late check out which was expected given our check in experience. A few things to note: The parking lot has an attendant, he was awesome as we went out for dinner via car he was nice enough to place a cone in our parking spot....awesome. We stayed in Room 100 which was on the ground floor poolside, no issue except for the fact that we heard every toilet flush on our side of the hotel. Not a game breaker but it is worth noting. The pool was "heated" but on a 60 degree cloudy day it was cold. The pool area is large with plenty of tables, chairs, chair covers and towels. Had the weather been nicer I would have been parked in a chair poolside with a jack n coke. The hotel offers chair and umbrella service at the beach, again an excellent perk but no used because of the weather. Overall this was a great experience and I would not hesitate to stay there again. I am hoping to get back to Cape May later in the summer and The Beach Shack is on my shortlist of places to stay. read more

Perfect place for a weekend getaway if you love the beach, love to eat and own dogs. Dog package was a bit pricey per night but the rooms are newly renovated, you get two dog bowls, a dog bed, a biscuit, frisbee, a free leash, and $20 voucher per day at the Rusty Nail restaurant with its own dog menu. The pool area is pretty decent. The King bedroom has a hint of Santorini with its blue and white tones. The sofa bed folds out if you need extra bed space. It's right next to the beach and the location is close to the outdoor shopping promenade. read more

This has been one of my favorite Cape May rentals for years. We go at least 3 times a season. This year was the first for the renovations. Although, the rooms are updated and look lovely, I miss the old Shack. The lack of kitchenette space is quite disappointing. We used to love to prep beach food and late night snacks. That's not possible now. The prices are higher, that's annoying. Unfortunately, parents at the pool do not monitor their children and there is no guard. It's a free-for-all and quite stressful for adult only guests. A father literary threw his kid into the deep end where I was trying to stay out of the way, the kid landed on my head. GUEST BEWARE!!!!NOT ALL IS AS IT APPEARS!!! It all starts with there website when booking! They have all these amazing photos of the "resort"(see below). They have pictures an amazing area that at first glance would seem that guests could gather around a fire and hang out in the sandy area in front of one of there buildings as all the umbrellas have "beach shack" written on them. U see this is DECEPTIVE MARKETING at is best, they sure pulled the wool over my eyes. I am traveling with a 9 month old and what better a place To stay than somewhere that has a cool area with tables and chairs and fireplaces that u are lead to believe you can use. But NO you see there is also a restaurant on site with outside seating but the only shot of the restaurant u see is that if a sign by the road. So our first night we ordered dinner from the restaurant and sat in an unused table and ate thinking that being a guest of the hotel we could just sit there given the umbrellas are the same as the ones at the pool making it all available to guests. The next night we ordered food from another restaurant used the same table and at on the sandy beach type area again because we were under the impression as a guest you could use the area. WELL GUESS WHAT! I apparently was wrong and we were asked to leave the sandy sitting area. I filed a complaint with the front desk and the following day I spoke with the manager Charley! Well he offered no solution to the complaint I filed. He told me that I could not bring outside alcohol on the premises, insulting me thinking I was just going there to drink, when in reality I was looking to listen to the live music that is offered at the "resort" nightly. You see there is a walkway that goes to the restaurant and a path between some pine trees that give guests of the "resort" access to the aforementioned area, again leading guests to believe that u can use the area at your will! No instead we were told by the bar manager, like we were second class citizens to go utilize the picnic tables behind the bushes like we were dogs being put in a cage! It costs $500+/night to stay here and due to the marketing of the "resort" on the website I decided to splurge and stay here for the reason it appeared that this area was available to guests(again see photos below). When confronted with photos of the site of guests sitting around a camp fire drinking from wine glasses that appeared to be similar to that of the ones in the room I was told they are the same glasses, which led to my next question of how do you distinguish if a guest Purchased the drink at the bar of brought it from the room? Charley's response to that was that the staff watches people who walk in. That was in fact not the case as I personally walked in two days in a row with drinks from my room and no one stopped me! They don't even have enough staff to fill all the tables in the restaurant. On the site they show no pictures of the restaurant just the sign which again deceivingly leads prospective guests to believe that this is an amenity of the "resort" and that the bar/restaurant is its own entity. Now on to the shack itself. The rooms are okay I've stayed in better for a lot less! The WiFi hasn't worked properly since I arrived here(but they have had there IT Guys working on it). I brought food in only to wake up the first day and find ants crawling all around it( they brought me traps and a can of raid). The pool is cloudy, sandy(I get it I am at the ocean sand is unavoidable), and just the area itself is dirty. There were gloves of hair floating in the pool, tissues(who knows if they had been used) and drinks left from the night before. I travel frequently and have stayed in a lot of places both on the ocean and inland and this at best even given the location is a $200/night hotel, not $500+. If I could give less than one star I would! Update 8/1/2020: Upon check out the manager Charley credited me with $454 for my "inconveniences". It is something for the deceptive advertising however still not worth what I paid. When I left I looked around the pool area and there were still tissues and all sorts of garbage laying by the chairs. He also sarcastically thanked me for taking the "time to review us on yelp"! read more

This hotel falls quite short on value. For the amount of money you'll spend, you could fly to a nicer hotel in a nicer location, and be ON the beach, not just across the street from it. There's no elevator here so move-in and move-out will be tedious. Multiple items needed repair in our room when we arrived. There's not enough parking for all the rooms they have, so expect to hand someone your keys and go find them again when you want to go somewhere. I could not find one housekeeper who spoke English, and the hotel isn't staffed by anyone after 10pm. That said, the Rusty Nail is nice to be close to just for the entertainment and atmosphere...but for $2K for three nights, there's better places to stay! read more

We have been wanting to try this hotel for awhile now and decided to book one of our summer vacation in September. Check in was smooth and frienfly. We arrived a few hours early and our room wasn't ready. They took our number and called us not too long after. We booked room 309 and it was great inside and the views of the ocean were amazing from the balcony and the room. The room was updated and beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean. The bed and bedding were great. I love the fact that The Rusty Nail is part of the hotel because I love the food, the atmosphere and the musical entertainment. We ate there every night. They have beach service with free umbrellas, chairs and towels. The young man handling Beach and lunch to the beach was such a hustler. I do think the outside of the hotel can use an upgrade. It's old and dated. The ice machine door was falling off the hinges. I didn't think I would like this place but it turned out we loved the chill feeling of the whole atmosphere of The Beach Shack and combo Rusty Nail. All in all a definite would come back again for us. Prices are great as well. read more

Decent hotel with friendly staff right across from the beach. We are staying at the Beach Shack currently. This was my wife's idea for a family vacation and I was a little apprehensive but was pleasantly surprised. To begin, I figured the place was going very loud and have a party atmosphere that would not be good for R&R or children. I was wrong. Even though there is a bar on the grounds, you do not even notice it from the rooms. One thing I hate about going down the shore is having to find parking and then I always get stuck lugging all the crap to the beach. The chairs, umbrellas, coolers, toys, etc. The nice thing about this place is they do it all for you. They set it all up, bring you drinks and food, and I can actually relax. The hotel itself is nothing to write home about. It is your standard fair hotel. It is very clean for an older place and we have not any issues with the room so far. It is a bit pricey but with the beach access and service, I guess it takes some of the sting out of the price. I did hear that they were redoing some of the hotel over the winter. Bottom line is that if my wife wants, we will stay here again without any objections from me. Everyone has been very friendly, the place is clean and quiet, and I do not have to be the pack mule for all the beach items. read more

I stayed here for a wedding at Congress Hall and was not disappointed. I have pretty low expectations for a shore rental, so I was more than impressed with the service at the Beach Shack. The rooms were extremely clean and sharp, they had this modern beach vibe that was really sweet. The showers had great water pressure. However, I would call ahead if you have limited mobility and ask if they have a non-tub bathroom, it could be hard to get in/out for anyone that is wheelchair bound, or someone who does not have full range of motion of their hips/knees. The beds were super comfy + cozy and they provided plenty of towels (I feel like hotels usually geek it in this area) Would definitely stay again! read more

This motel should be called the SH!T SHACK not the Beach Shack! While it's one of the few places that takes dogs (which is why we stayed there) I'd strongly suggest leaving your dog at home and staying someplace else! This motel was absolutely terrible! The low lights include: Our room was under the steps, dark and smelled musty. The room was well appointed and designed but very small and very, very run down. The view from the bathroom looked into a parking area for a trailer and had a dumpster full of trash and people smoking. The comforter had old blood spots!! The AC unit went on and off alllll night Music from the bar plays until after 9pm making it impossible to put young kids to bed Pool was tiny and filled with a ton kids...and no life guard. Cleaning of room was very basic and not well done--there was old dog poop on the wall The entry patio to the room has pee stains from dogs Top bunk had a very small railing and was unsafe for young kids that roll around a lot. Fantastic Bloody Mary's!!! My fish taco app. was tasty and loaded with fresh locally grown lettuce, corn, tomatoes as well as cheddar cheese, guac and grilled fish. I felt like it was needed a little heat, queso blanco and maybe a citrus dressing to take it up a level or two. Our server was slow but I guess that's to be expected when you're in a vacation town. The live band playing Bob Marley and other beachy tunes are there daily. People of all ages hanging out and enjoying this very cool spot. You should definitely try and stop by. read more

Staff was helpful and accommodated our request to save us a room for late-night check-in with a view of the ocean. The rooms have been recently re-done in a 60's retro theme. We found the standard-sized room to be rather large. You may find a better rate on their website than what they will quote you on the phone - so check there first. They'll honor the website rate if you mention it to them ($118/night for an early June non-weekend night for us in 2011). If you're idea of a vacation is spending time with mouth breathing pot bellied New Yorkers and their fat wives sausaged into jeans styled for much skinnier girls 2 decades younger while their pink from the sun overweight loud, poorly educated children throw sand on your dinner table, then this place is for you! If you need to be around hairy fat men wearing dirty hats ordering lite beer while their pubic hairs fall from them like snow, then you're in the right place! While at the Beach Shack you can forget about getting your sheets changed, your bathroom cleaned, or sugar for your coffee. Why not stay at the Beach Shack so you can shed the convenience of living in America while spending over $2 thousand dollars a week for even the most basic hotel services? The odor of our room's carpet is somewhere between moldy basement and grandmom's wheelchair seat. There's actually holes in the carpet. Holes. There's mold growing on most of the ceiling in the bathroom. We found trash behind our bed room dresser. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING was filthy with mold and dust and grime. While staying here, why not challenge yourself to turn on a light? Not an easy task, since there really aren't any lights in the rooms. I think that's so you can't notice the mold, holes in the carpet, the bad and peeling paint and everything that room service missed. read more

There have got to be better places to stay in Cape May, cause this one was not good. On a quick, shoulder-season overnight in Cape May with the 'rents, we were looking for something basic, clean, and serviceable. That Beach Shack was on the water made it seem like a perfect option, but its location turned out to be the only decent thing about it. We had a two-room suite with three table lamps to light the entire place, a smell of mildew throughout, and an actively damp side chair in the living room area. The shower took about 5 minutes to get hot water, and also doesn't drain, so I got to shower in calf-deep freezing water. The hotel's wifi didn't work in our room, though we were sometimes able to get a signal if we went back to the stairwell to connect. And why didn't we call the front desk, to bring these things to their attention? No phone in the room, so it would have meant walking over to the office, in the rain, in my jammies. Rdiculous. We didn't go to Rusty Nail, because even though we bought a package that included breakfast there, the restaurant was not open for breakfast (so they did give us a coupon for the Blue Pig at the nearby Congress House, which was very good - and possibly better than the Rusty Nail would be). We couldn't get out fast enough. Even for basic, this place is sub-par; find a better home base to explore the cuteness of Cape May. read more

Nothing fancy about this place but it is clean and reasonably priced. Hotel staff is friendly. Hotel is located right across from the beach, has a pool and chairs outside of each room. Fridge & microwave in the ooms and the place is pet friendly (my pets stayed home this time). They also have a restaurant on location with bar. The Rusty Nail as the place is called seemed to have a pretty good crowd. Didn't try it out though....went to other dining locations. Not the Hilton but it's is pretty good for the beach. read more

Not sure who is managing this establishment but the food is over cooked, the drinks are weak and it seems like everyone is new and unsure what they're doing. In a few words they suck...the entertainment is great...they're only saving grace! read more

The Beach Shack is a great place to stay. The people are very welcoming, and the service at the beach was excellent. The Rusty Nail Restaurant, which is part of the hotel served great food for lunch, very fresh seafood and great drinks! The layout of the hotel room is comfortable, but not anything of luxury. It is basically a place to just sleep, get ready, and go, which is all you need for Cape May since you will be out of the hotel room for the day with so much to do. The rooms were very clean, staff was great, and I would definitely come here again! I greatly recommend the Beach Shack to anyone who comes to Cape May. read more

We stayed at the Beach Shack during the 2017 Jazz Festival. The place was undergoing renovation of the entire facility. I was relieved to see the room was freshly painted, they installed new furniture, carpeting, bed, and an up to date bathroom, which made for a comfortable stay. This motel is right across from the beach which is perfect. I would definitely like to come back after all the renovations are complete, including dining at their restaurant and hanging around the fire pit. read more

We stayed here for the first time this summer and loved it! It is a quirky little beach motel, right across from the sand, that was just perfect. Our room was a great size with the bedroom and living room separated by the bathroom. Everything was newly remodeled and the decor was a super fun beach chic. There were a lot of kids staying around us but we never seemed to hear them. Even the noise from the Rusty Nail (which we loved) was minimal and didn't bother us at all. We rented a beach cabana every day we were there and the service was great and the chairs were comfy. All around the rooms and service was fantastic. Cape May has so many beautiful historic hotels but the Beach Shake was a cool, funky, relaxed, and modern breath of fresh air. We tried to make a return trip last minute but they were totally sold out. We can't wait to come back, at least a few times, next summer!! read more

I have just returned from a 3 night stay at this hotel and although the room was very clean it was small. We had a bunkroom on the first floor of the hotel and the cleaning staff used the room next to ours. It was noisy in the morning and in the evening there was an eyesore of trash and laundery sitting outside. The pool needs updating and the property is run down, poorly landscaped and not many places to sit and enjoy the ocean view since the upper deck is reserved for bungelow guests. I feel that I was a guest at this hotel which is part of the Cape Resort chain which I paid close to $500 a night it certainly did not meet my expectations. Do not book a vacation at this resort. It is certainly not a resort. read more
