This place had great reviews on all of the travel sites so we booked it for a very rare weekend getaway. I can see why people like the place. The proprietor is very kind and there are nice touches like wine happy hour each evening and good breakfast and coffee. Unfortunately the room just wasn't up to par. The photos I've posted speak for themselves. I understand it is an historic building but the stained carpets, falling apart bathroom, ancient uncomfortably soft and incredibly loud bathroom door just made the stay uncomfortable. We'd love to return but there'd need to be major updates to the rooms. read more

We stayed in this Inn in 2015 when we got married in Cape May and we were excited to stay again to celebrate our 10th anniversary. We booked a room for July back in February and since then tried different ways to communicate with the owners to see if there was space on the property to keep our expensive bikes (during our first stay our room included the room with on-site parking, this time it did not). We left 2 voice mails, sent 2 emails and an online form and never heard back. We only heard back (the very next day) when we sent a cancellation request. The owner said that it is very safe in Cape May and we could have kept our bikes with them and in the same email confirmed our cancellation, did not even apologize for not getting back to us and did not ask if we still wanted to stay. They also kept our $40 for cancellation, but money is not importance, but the principle. How can you do business like this?? Very disappointed. It messed our plans greatly. We will never be back and will defer anyone we know from staying at this property. read more

4 1/2 stars but I am rounding up. Pros 1. Free wifi. 2. Personable and genuinely nice owners (John and Lisa). 3. The rooms are nice and the walls are thick (you cannot hear your neighbor). 4. Walking distance to the beach (couple of blocks). 5. Extremely affordable ($169 a night for the room we stayed in). 6. They provide you with beach towels. Cons 1. Off street parking - only certain rooms get to park in the private lot. 2. We had a leaky faucet and by the looks of it, it's been leaking for a while. Really had a great stay here. The owners are super hospitable and nice and really make you feel like you're really staying with a good friend in Cape May instead of at a hotel/B&B. I would 100% recommend staying here to anyone. Found this inn on Yelp after searching average ratings and boy were you guys on point. Just returned from a few days at the Bacchus and concur enthusiastically with what was written by other contributors. It is truly an accomplishment to have all 5 Star reviews. After all, if people are happy, they might actually write about their experiences. If, on the other hand, they're pissed, you can pretty much count on it. I really can't find flaws with the inn or the inn keepers. Running a business like this flawlessly takes real talent. Having grown up in the business, John has it pretty much down pat. He runs the place efficiently and, it would appear, effortlessly which really is, in and of itself, an accomplishment. He also clearly enjoys his work, something that genuinely adds to the overall experience. Little touches really add up. Things like bikes, beach chairs with built in carry straps, beach bags with towels replaced daily and 4PM wine and cheese really make this a truly unique and amazing place. Our room was cleaned spotlessly by the time we returned from breakfast around 9AM each morning. Even the selection of DVDs and the choice of coffees was on point. I really can't recommend them highly enough. We shall return and, I suspect, so will many of our friends. Kudos. read more

Ok- Take a weekend that's plans are up in the air and start scrolling through some overnight hot spots in Cape May. If you're lucky like we were, you'll come across this enchanting inn located just a few blocks from the main shopping district, the beach and close to 3.2 million great places to eat! On Friday I reached John, half of an incredible team who owns this charming house on Columbia Ave., and he immediately made me feel that I had made the right choice in calling him. In the off chance we were to get into town early, could we still check in before two p.m.? Of course! When walking into this three story slice of history, you know that there is love poured into this business. The house was built in 1876 and over the years has seen many changes and lots of the kind of care that every proud home owner knows. Inside is decorated meticulously and leaves you feeling all at once relaxed and comfortable. A large dining table and a wrap around porch with many comfortable chairs beckon to you to come, sit and enjoy at the wine and cheese hour from four to five p.m. Strike up a conversation with John and you feel like you've made a new friend within minutes. Smart, hard working and family oriented- and pours all of this into his business. Each room in the house is unique and since there were two rooms available, we were given our choice of room three and four. We chose three because of the stained glass windows and the claw foot tub in the bath (pictures from a previous review do the room justice). Houses in those days were built solid and as such, the room was very quiet and we never heard another guest. On our door when we went out for dinner in the evening was a card asking what we would like for breakfast. Choices included fresh fruit, muffins, french toast and more. Breakfast started at 8am for coffee and muffins followed by a sit down breakfast with all of the other guests at 8:30. There's nothing like breaking bread with strangers in the morning over a cup of coffee to start your day off right. We met some interesting people and John was always eager to please his guests by bringing and clearing plates and joining in the flowing conversation. My only wish was that we had come down for more than just one night. Do yourself a favor when booking a trip to Cape May and consider the Bacchus Inn- you'll be glad you did!!!! read more

My husband and I have stayed here several times. We recently had our wedding at the Inn. If I could give John, the owner, 10 stars I would. John consistently delivers on the best hospitality and we knew if we were to have our wedding in Cape May, the Bacchus Inn was the place to go. We had a lovely small intimate wedding. The place was still decorated from Christmas, so it was just the perfect setting my husband and I wanted. The main house as well as the cottage both have that Cape May charm and style. Wine and cheese served every afternoon in the parlor of a Victorian inn? Yes, please! The Bacchus Inn is a top notch painted lady or Victorian home in beautiful Cape May. Hosts John and Lisa provide top service to their guests, whether it be to recommend a restaurant or day trip or serving up their wonderful and creative breakfasts each morning. The Inn's properties consist of the Main House and The Cottage, where my husband and I stayed. Each room has a wine inspired name. We were in the Pinot Noir room. The period antiques and cozy parlor are inviting. There are beach towels and bikes provided for each room. The inn is within walking distance of the beach and the many restaurants in the heart of town. We truly enjoyed our four day stay and will be back again to this lovely B&B. read more

The Bacchus Inn knows how to please! Right from the start, John was welcoming and friendly. He immediately made dinner reservations for us after asking about where we'd like to go and what we'd like to eat. The room (#4) was spotless, with french doors leading to an airy and bright bathroom. The bed was so comfortable with two different hardness of pillows to choose from. Wine glasses and corkscrew were available in room for us, and a fridge and microwave were available in the hall. Coffee, tea, and water were available self-serve at any hour, down in the sunroom. Don't miss the 4:00 happy hour. This was our favorite part! Complimentary wine, cheese, crackers, and fruit are available from 4-5 in the afternoons. Sit outside on the porch and chat with other guests, you never know where the conversation will take you! The breakfast consisted of a fruit course to start, then a savory meal. Coffee, tea, and OJ were free flowing starting half an hour before breakfast. Two seatings were offered. They accommodated my lactose intolerance for breakfast, as well as other guests' needs and preferences. Beach chairs and bikes are available for guest use. I suggest biking in the earlier morning! An outdoor shower stall WITH TOWELS is available for use. We used it after check-out, before heading home, since we were sandy from a day at the beach. Had it rained, books, a DVD collection and board game cupboard are available. Multiple sitting rooms would allow for relaxation. Our room did not come with "parking" but I parked on the street and my car was close by and safe. Not a problem at all. read more

The owners might be my favorite part of the experience at the Bacchus Inn. They were friendly, welcoming and just generally very happy to see us. The rooms are so adorable and comfortable. The amenities left nothing to be desired. The breakfast was delicious and the afternoon wine and cheese were amazing. There was a beach bag with beach towels waiting for us in the closet. There were beach cruiser bikes to use at our convenience. There was an outdoor shower and clean towels on the side of the house. There were DVDs/videos and books to borrow. We had such a great time here. We have heard before visiting Cape May that the Victorian houses are very unique to this place. And to stay in one really made our experience complete. The price was totally worth it. But I do believe that the price drops dramatically during off season. We will definitely come back again. read more

I pretty much only use Yelp to read reviews, not write them. After our 4th or 5th stay here, I thought it finally warranted my first review. The Bacchus Inn is a fantastic B&B in a perfect location. Rooms are cleaner than hotel rooms and the owners are wonderful. Wine and cheese in the afternoon is a great time to unwind from a day at the beach, get ready for the nights activity and socialize with friendly guests. Leave your beach chairs at home, there is plenty that you can use at the Inn and they are likely nicer than the ones you will bring. A delicious home-made breakfast is cooked every morning and fresh coffee is available as well as some muffins and such. If you're looking for that perfect weekend getaway with your significant other, stay here. read more

This was our first B&B stay in Cape May, and I think we've already found our home away from home during our visits to the Cape! John & Lisa run this great B&B about two blocks from the ocean. It may not be ocean view, but many B&Bs in Cape May aren't. Columbia Avenue is full of beautiful B&Bs and restored homes, lined with trees and flowers. It's a beautiful site to see in May, before the city gets crowded for the summer. It was easy to find a place to park within a few blocks if you needed to, but the more expensive rooms in the B&B do come with a parking space. We stayed in the main house (719 Columbia), but the smaller cottage house is just across the street at 710. I'm sure that Lisa & John get tired walking back and forth every day, but both properties are just lovely. They are both Victorian homes like most in Cape May, but they weren't as over-the-top done on the inside. We stayed in room 5, a huge room with a king bed and beautiful armoire for hanging clothes. If you are looking for privacy, room 5 is great because there isn't a guestroom above or below you, nor did we hear any of the guests on the sides of us. The photos on their website are exactly what we saw when we walked in! Room 5 also has an electric fireplace and a shower with a rain shower head and body jets. It's a great way to wake up in the morning! The Bacchus Inn has lots of great places to curl up with the paper or a good book. The enclosed sunporch was great once the sun was down and it began to get cold; they've filled it with comfortable wicker furniture, magazines, books and board games. You can also take a seat in a rocker on the front porch, or if you're feeling a bit formal, take a seat in the parlor. Make sure you get down to breakfast early so that you can have a seat at the main table. We ate at the early seating (8:30), with 8 people at the main table and two or three tables on the side porch. The food was excellent; I particularly enjoyed my vanilla yogurt parfait with fresh pineapple, blueberries and raspberries. If you're hungry a little earlier, John has muffins and pastries out a bit before 8 with lots of coffee and tea, or if you're up even earlier, you can make yourself a cup of tea or coffee at their little beverage stand. We were so pleased when we decided to spend a night at the Bacchus Inn. We loved the included use of beach cruiser bikes, tasty food, afternoon snacks, unbelievable atmosphere, and welcoming staff/owners. The breakfast was great and John and Lisa provided great tips on things to do and see in Cape May. I wish we could have stayed for a week or more, but sadly one night was all we had. My mother and I had such a wonderful time! We stayed in in room 15, The Petite Syrah room and it was great. The bed was comfy, rooms were quiet and breakfast was wonderful. The owner does such a wonderful job on making you feel relaxed and at home. They Inn supply's bikes, beach chairs and towels during your stay and they even have a private outdoor shower for you to use after your day at the beach before you head back to reality. John knows his wine and has a wonderful wine and cheese time from 4-5pm each day. Rooms are very clean and everything is very well maintained. I'm trying to think of a negative, but I'm not coming up with much. Maybe the fact that it has window air conditioners instead of central air, but if that is a deal breaker for you, then you need to lighten up a bit! read more

This place is amazing. The rooms are small but extremely comfortable and they have air conditioning. It's in a very accessible location with many important sites located nearby. They have snacks and wine in the late afternoon and lovely rocking chairs on the front porch that can be enjoyed while chatting with other guests. We have stayed at a number of B&B's in Cape May over the years, and this was by far the best experience we've had. Having access to complimentary beach chairs, towels and bicycles makes being on the nearby (two blocks) beach very easy. The afternoon pre-dinner beverage service is great convivial fun worthy of the Inn's namesake. John, the owner-host, goes above and beyond one's reasonable expectations in seeing to guests' needs and comfort (after we checked out, he saw to express-mailing the laptop we'd left behind, calling us as we were enroute home). Whether re-filling a breakfast water glass (in the midst of proving a lovely breakfast for seven other couples), or attending to one's culinary preferences, John is a dynamo of graciousness. He is a font of accurate information regarding local dining options or attractions, without ever breaking his stride, a sweat, or the upbeat casual mood. First, I wanted to thank you John for such a wonderful experience in Cape May! I am highly recommending to stay at the Bacchus Inn...here is why: 1. John is awesome and gives the Inn a great vibe 2. Breakfast is awesome! Not Crossfit friendly BUT when you're on vacation..who cares! They made mixed berry french toast, banana foster french toast, eggs Benedict, an excellent Greek yogurt mixture with banana and honey...too many good things and John will make adjustments for food allergies etc. 3. Bikes, beach chairs and beach towels are provided 4. Walking distance to the beach and the town 5. Room is comfortable 6. WINE and CHEESE at 4pm on the porch is awesome! All of the guests come back for the happy hour and were incredibly friendly. One night I didn't even make it off the porch and cancelled my dinner reservation because we were having such a good time on the porch! As a frequent visitor to Cape May, hands down The Bacchus Inn is my favorite B&B in town. The property has two homes, and I stayed in the Cottage across the street from the main inn. Our room was spacious, beautifully decorated and immaculate. The bathroom was a really nice size, which you don't always see in a B&B. First of all I am very critical, but I must say this place is perfect, super clean rooms, amazing service, 2 blocks away from the beach, shower outside if u want to rinse off after beach, beach chairs...even clean beach towels! I mean I can't say enough on how delicious our breakfast was, and u get two settings that u can choose from...8:30am or 9:45, that was great because I wanted to sleep in a lil. Now, it is our favorite destination because it is so well done, John and Lisa make you feel like family (Lisa makes the best B&B breakfast in Cape May imho), and it is convenient to everything. It's a "little slice of heaven," especially if you are a foodie, like me! The breakfasts are truly gourmet-quality (I'm still thinking about that little Dutch apple pancake that tasted just like Tarte Tatin) and served at a formal dining table on real china. The room we stayed in (in their annex across the street) was just adorable with a sparkling clean bathroom. But most important, the innkeepers are simply amazing: they enjoy what they do and it comes through in every interaction you have with them. Oh, and lest I forget, homemade cookies and brownies every day at 4 PM, along with homemade lemonade and sangria and wine. It doesn't get much better than this. read more

Love Cape May!! Have been going there for vacation for many many years. Found the Bacchus Inn about 8 years ago and have been staying there ever since. We love the accommodations, and the innkeepers - John and Lisa. The breakfasts are amazing and inventive and the wine and cheese hour at 4 every day is a great time to meet other folks staying at the B&B and shoot the breeze. We have met so many nice people over the years. It always makes the stay that much better. It's a short walk to the beach and to Washington Mall - the most sought after attractions. We come back often to this gem in the center of everything Cape May -- I can't say enough about innkeepers Lisa and John's incredible generosity, friendliness and service. Lisa's breakfasts are gourmet (buy her cookbook) and the rooms are just so perfect. We stayed in room 9 this time, and the Jacuzzi tub was a highlight for me, after the long walk on the beach it was a welcome respite, as is the 4pm wine and cheese hour! Another favorite is the porch itself, the most lively and friendly in town! Note: I wrote this review using a TripAdvisor account to which I no longer have access. I did not copy this from someone else, even though it appears as a username that is different from my usual TripAdvisor account. We recently spent the weekend at The Bacchus Inn for our first Cape May getaway. Immediately upon our arrival, we knew we had come to the right place. John was very friendly and showed us all of the amenities available, including beach chairs (which are much nicer than the ones I have at home) bikes, an outdoor shower that is supplied with clean towels, and the DVD collection and games in the sitting area. We were in room #11 in the Cottage across the street and our room was absolutely spotless. The bathroom was very clean and the bed was comfy. There was plenty of space for our bags, too. After a trip to the beach, we stopped by the Main House for some wine and cheese, which was great and a nice way to chat with our innkeepers and fellow guests. (We thought this was a major high point of the Bacchus - what a great idea!) John was eager to help us make a decision on where to stay for dinner and his advice was right on - I had the best scallops I have every had that night. For breakfast, Lisa made some delicious french toast with berries, turkey sausage and a fruit salad with toasted coconut - breakfast was AMAZING! The next day, we spent the day on the beach, which is a very short and scenic walk from the inn, then returned for a nap. John even called and made reservations for us when we were talking about dinner. Later that night we stayed up late chatting with fellow patrons on the cozy porch, which has rocking chairs and bug spray, if necessary (a nice touch). A spectacular breakfast of scrambled eggs with tomato and spinach and bacon was served and since we were up early, we sampled a banana chocolate muffin, which was out of this world. (I especially appreciated the never ending carafes of coffee!) John and Lisa allow you to use the outdoor shower, beach chairs, and bikes after you check out, which is very accommodating of them, since we had wanted to spend the next day in Cape May, as well, and would be there all day. (The inn is a short walk from shopping and many restaurants and it is lovely to stroll down Columbia Street to get there.) We honestly would not think of staying anywhere but the Bacchus when we come back, which will hopefully be next year. What a great place! Thanks John and Lisa. Just returned from a night at the Bacchus Inn on our drive home from Virginia. We arrived around 6pm and were greeted by John, the owner of the B&B. He and his wife are a young couple who have been in the business for enough years that they take all your needs into consideration and are highly attentive. Since we were late in our arrival, we asked him to recommend a restaurant based on our dining preferences. He even called the establishment (410 Bank Street) and made us reservations. If you like B&Bs, this is a top notch establishment. The antique furniture lends to the inn's charm, the bedrooms are cleaner than any hotel I've stayed in (Including the Ritz Carlton's), and their desire to please and succeed is clearly demonstrated. The Bacchus Inn is only a few blocks to the beach, they have beach chairs and bikes for your use, and an outdoor shower with shampoo, conditioner, and clean towels. They gave us extra time to check out, and allowed us to use the outdoor shower before our 3 hr drive home; even after we had checked out. Breakfast we ate the cheese & fruit blintzes, and engaged in conversation with John. Finally, we forgot two shirts in the closet, and Barbara left a message on the phone asap; which allowed us to return before having left Cape May. read more
