Out for dinner with a former exchange student, and she made the reservation for us. Was not sure what to expect, but was surprised to see the Michelin sign at the hostess table. I suspected we were in for a great meal, and I was not disappointed! We were seated, and our drink orders were produced quickly. The restaurant is big, as there is an outdoor dining area, and an upstairs and downstairs dining room. We were seated downstairs, next to a display case with these little statues of an army of servers brining food. But, I did not find their noise level too bad, as we were capable of having a conversation at a normal volume. Since there were 4 in our party, we ordered a selection of their hot and cold small plates to share - ceasar salad, croquettes filled with stew meat, fried clams, and tortilla patatas. The tortilla patatas took the prize for me. Excellent, and I could have eaten more. Next came our main dishes, which we also shared - grilled hake, grilled lamb, and macaroni bolognese. We had a lovely group dinner here while in town for the F1 race recently - we were downstairs in a small semi-private room which was great so we could all hear each other. Croquettes were a tasty appetizer and everybody seemed happy with their main courses, particularly me (bolognese pasta - yum!) and everyone who ordered the hake loved it. Tortilla de patatas - these are the best in the city. Bonito tomato salad - first time having a salad with fish in it?? But all the flavors worked so well together I was super impressed. Had an absolutely AMAZING experience at La Maruca yesterday. It is my first time visiting Spain and my friends brought me here to try some classic Spanish dishes. We were able to walk in for lunch which was great considering this is such a nice and busy restaurant The food and drinks were absolutely amazing. I would recommend getting a tinto de verano (classic Spanish drink made with red wine and fruit juice) to drink. The burrata salad was delicious and croquettes are something you must try. The restaurant is two floors and there is a covered outdoor terrace as well. The downstairs lighting is great for taking photos of the food. We sat on the lower level. Not sure what the attitude was for, but the other servers made up for it, and the experience merits a five star reviews. Started with the roasted peppers, which were great. It could have been an entree, it was so much, but it would be good for sharing. Awesome flavor - a great grilled flavor with the peppers. My main was the Hake with red sauce, clams, and shrimp. We went to dinner and found everything to be overrated. The waiter couldn't explain the dishes and didn't know what scotch was. He took the food order and never came back. The fish dishes was very greasy and broken up with bones. Not tasty unable to eat it. The pasta and the meatballs were not great . I would stay away from this expensive but not good restaurant . Chic looking space, service was fine, food presentation was good, however, the food was very mediocre. Given the price level in this neighborhood perhaps not surprising. The fried squid was the most expensive on that side of the menu, and it came out as street food, which was a bit shocking. We came here on a friends recommendation and I am glad we did. This was without a doubt my favorite meal in Madrid. It is located in a pretty upscale neighborhood, but the prices are very reasonable. This place was busy, but they were able to get us a table with about a half hour wait. The wait we well worth it. Everything that we saw coming out of the kitchen looked delicious. After some debate about what appetizer to get we decided to skip the appetizer and just get an extra entree. My wife had a fish dish that I don't recall, but I do remember that it tasted great. Other tables around us had ordered the baked pasta dish with a bolognese sauce that just looked so good we had to order it to share. It was really quite delicious and left my mouth wanting more. I ordered the roasted glazed lamb and it was simply amazing. I made sure to get every bit of that sauce. We normally skip the dessert at restaurants and go someplace different for that treat, but the food was so good here dessert was essential even though I was stuffed. I am a big fan of lemon meringue, so that is what I decided on. It did not disappoint as it was a perfect ending to a great meal. read more

My real rating is somewhere between 3 and 4. Atmosphere: 4.5 Music: 4.5 Food: 4.5 Service: 2 Wine and Spirits: 2 We found the patatas bravas and the short rib to be delicious. Both were unique and demonstrated a great deal of skill and experience in their execution. The environment is very relaxed yet upscale, with one part feeling like a living room and the rest modern minimalist but displaying a very cool graphic of silhouettes extending the length of the space. The music was perfect--the only improvement would be for there to be a live musician, maybe a pianist or jazz guitarist based on the style of music they chose. The real problems were the following: First, they had a full bar yet were completely incompetent when it came to utilizing it. They claimed they didn't know how to make any cocktail except a mojito. I proceeded to try to tell them how to make a very simple cocktail, and they sent someone from the bar to our table who set up a little table and proceeded to completely butcher it. (This of course was a very expensive process and ended up being one of the worst cocktails i've ever had--it was reminiscent of freshman year of college). Second, the overall service is astonishingly bad. They don't have you taste your wine before doing the full pours, they come abruptly and grab the plates from you without asking if you're finished and even after indicating you aren't finished they still proceeded to pull them away from me, making me feel like a beggar or something lol... There is no manager in sight, and the whole time our waiter was walking around aimlessly, appearing to be texting on his phone openly for everyone to see. He didn't look up ever, so we had to flag him down any time we needed attention. Overall, I would go back, I just would hope to see better service and I'd bring with me a precise recipe for the bartender to try to follow to make a proper drink at their beautiful bar that has completely gone to waste. read more

I had a wonderful experience here. We made a reservation to come here for a special celebration and it was good that we did. It fills up quickly and we were lucky enough to get a table last minute. The interior decoration is very chic and modern. The restaurant itself is much bigger than it looks, covering too large floors. The decor is a bit eccentric, but very nice. The chairs at the tables are not your average dining chairs, instead they are these designer, egg-like chairs. They're surprisingly comfortable. The waitstaff was attentive and very friendly, even though not everyone spoke English very well. We were sitting in view of the kitchen doors and I could tell that this place runs like a well oiled machine. There were lots of people working and everyone seemed to have a specific role, which they performed seamlessly. I was very impressed. As for the food, well... it was phenomenal. I ordered the Poached Eggs with Truffled Purée and Mushrooms and was completely blown away. It seemed like a small portion at first, but the dish was so incredibly rich that I couldn't have eaten another bite (since I wanted to try their dessert too). The purée, whatever it was made from, was smooth as silk and the egg was poached to perfection. The taste had the perfect balance of truffle, not overpowering, but still strong enough to really taste it. I wanted to savor every bite. My companions were equally happy with their dishes and we finished off the meal with a large slice of their Lemon Pie. It's more of a lemon meringue pie, but with a top layer (as thick as the pie slice) of meringue. It was superb! I have to mention how outrageously well priced everything was, because I was a bit surprised. It's a gourmet meal at bargain prices. The best meal I had in Madrid. Classy, modern and fun atmosphere. It looks chic and in a very fancy neighborhood (we felt underdressed) but the hostess was very friendly and welcoming. We went at peak lunchtime on a Saturday and were told a 30 minuted wait. It ended up being 45 minutes but we didn't mind as the hostess kept us informed that tables were on dessert or were paying now. And there's a nice bar to wait. The food was amazing. I had the hake fish in a red sauce with clams and shrimp and it was so delicious. The fish was cooked perfectly and the sauce was the best part - extremely flavorful. We also had the macaroni with bolognese - it came in a piping hot ramekin and looked like a cross between macaroni & cheese and a baked lasagna - fantastic. Normally I never eat dessert at the same restaurant I have my main meal because I like trying a new place but because my main dishes were so so good, I knew dessert would be wonderful. It did not disappoint. I highly recommend La Maruca for a nice elegant (but not snobby) meal in Madrid if you want a break from casual tapas. EXTRAORDINARY SERVICE, awesome food, very nice decoration. It was perfect! We got the prawn pudding (A MUST!), the foie (excellent) and the tuna (superb).
