This restaurant is located inside the playa largo hotel. It is a gated resort. The lamb shank was a great choice with labneh and pomegranate perils and crushed nuts. . I didn't care for any of the Italian food. The pasta or the pomodoro. They have basque cheesecake on the menu that was suppose to be served with cherries. Instead they filled the plate with all kinds of berries so I couldn't try it. No one ate it. She did offer to do it over but I feel like she should tell us before she changed the whole dessert. We ate here for breakfast and dinner and it was absolutely delicious! Service was great! They gave us mimosas to celebrate our anniversary too. I have to say the drinks here are generous. Dinner was absolutely delicious too! They gave us bread before our dinner came out and it was so fresh and tasty. The food was done with quality ingredients. The management at this property has a policy of no locals can do business here. I've been a regular guest of this place since it opened. The wait staff is amazing. The food is 6/10. But for the Key largo breakfast options, 6/10 is good. The wait staff makes up the difference! However, as clown managers come and go through the years, we have had to endure on again/ off again policy of allowing locals to eat in the la Marea restaurant. My daughter has been eating there almost every week since she was 5 years old. It's such a great place where we've made great memories. However, the aforementioned "clown managers" have put a NO LOCAL PATRONS policy into place from time to time. When I think of the literally thousands of dollars spent there by me, it's just insanity customer care. I was literally thrown out a few years ago like I was Adolph Hitler. This was in front of my 13 year old daughter. Later, the policy was reversed (the restaurant is dead from May through November). I continued to take my family there. Once again, someone decided they do not need local patrons and have banned locals again. Marriott Bonvoy should seriously look at this policy as it's a terrible treatment for locals who happen to be the highest status of Bonvoy membership as well. read more

My wife and I went into La Marea for our first night staying at La Playa. We kept it simple with just a meatza pizza (pepperoni, meatballs, and Italian sausage) and the fried seafood appetizer (calamari, fish, and shrimp) to share, along with a couple drinks. The pizza was good and easily large enough for 2. Kind of wish that's all we ordered because the fried seafood was way too salty. I can power through some sodium especially for fried seafood but this was overwhelming even with lemon added. The resort as a whole is absolutely gorgeous and the restaurant being attached is no exception. Immediately we felt very calm and relaxed from the intimate atmosphere. We did become a bit uneasy, however, due to the absent service. There wasn't a stationed greeter to welcome us right away - we stood around waiting for a bit. Our server was nice and started off on a very attentive note but after our food came he was nowhere to be found and it was a long time before we saw him to let him know we were ready for a box and the bill. And, of course, the gratuity is mandatory, which, I'm sorry, I think some employees exploit at these in-resort restaurants. We did have some great servers in other resort restaurants. But if they weren't on that end of the spectrum, they were on the complete opposite, and that's what we found at La Marea. We never did eat there for the breakfast buffet. $32 per person is insane for bacon and eggs and pastries. For $32 TOTAL you can go down the block to Harriette's and enjoy the same (if not better) breakfast AND get one of their incomparable muffins. Oh My! What an indulgent start to the day! And the staff goes above & beyond to please! The crab cakes benedict are the best I've ever experienced! Instead of using an English muffin as the base, the crab cakes stood as the base & held up extremely well...no sogginess here! Top the crab with two perfectly poached eggs. Inside the La Playa resort. Plenty of open tables. Open to the outside with great views of the gulf. Ok service but they had to go upstairs for drinks so sometimes it took a while. We started with the scallops. Great flavors but seemed just a touch undercooked. There were only 2 and that would be fine for an app but not when it is $20. Way over priced for the portion size. We then had the Miami smokers. Tasty but you really need to have a bit of chimichurri with each bite or else the dates are too sweet. Lastly we had the lobster pasta. Really good. Probably the best pasta like this I have had in a long time but again very small portion to price. Over all the prices were way to high for what you get and the service was slow. The restaurant is right in the Playa largo Marriott resort! Very classy, yet maintains the feel of the keys with the open doors to feel the breeze. I would give this place 0 stars if possible. There were so many things wrong about this experience I have to create a list. 1.) Incredibly undertrained service staff. 2.) Pouring a glass of wine out of a filthy wine bottle covered In stickiness and who knows what left me without surprise when the wine tasted like sour vinegar. 3.) The gumbo was essentially canned soup with thin slices of sausage resembling pepperoni- cold and placed on top. 4.) The crudo dish was fishy smelling and drenched in sesame oil. So suspect. 5.) The eggplant entree was HORRIBLE. The pieces of eggplant were tiny, like Ichibin eggplant but sliced in rounds and probably 4 weeks old. I mean, I couldn't swallow it, it was so hard. The acorn squash that was scattered around the plate was so dry I gagged and struggled to catch my breath. So imagine extremely expired and dry chunks of what looked like petrified mushrooms caps mixed with the remains of a Jack o lantern served up on a plate with a side of pickled onions and lentils. 6.) Another great meal tonight here. We have stayed at this hotel and eaten in this restaurant several times for breakfast and dinner. Tonight was exceptional. Surpassing the food was the service, very attentive and caring staff. They love what they do and it shows. Led by manager Eli and chefs Anton and Jose, along with our waiter Renaldo, who all took pride in preparing and presenting our meal. Great Breakfast and Service but Danger, Will Robinson, Danger..... Last Visit: Sunday, March 11, 2018 I have been frequenting La Marea Restuarant @ Playa Largo Resort since its opening. I have gone solo, with my partner and I have also brought friends and neighbors to the restaurant to experience their breakfast buffet. I must say the food and presentation is quite nice, though I do miss the view of another favorite breakfast spot in Key Largo. The staff has always been kind and helpful and its nice to see many of the same faces year after year, along with the new. Again, I cannot say enough about the staff who has taken care of me and my various parties over the years. (You know who you are.) Unfortunately, I have only been back four times, maybe five times this year and not after I learned, along with my party, on my last visit: Playa Largo Resort charges an "18% service charge" on every check. I understand it occurs at every dining and beverage establishment at the Resort. I would not have difficulty with this, for the staff works extremely hard at giving the patron a nice experience with a high standard of service. The problem lies in the fact that this fee does not go to the staff. The fee goes to the Resort. The staff only receives a gratuity if one chooses to add an additional amount to the bill. This practice is not fair to the servers who help give Playa Largo a good reputation and return business. This practice is not fair to the Resort's patrons for if we want to reward the staff for superb service that they typically extend, at the customary levels, we would be increasing our bill by another 15-20%; a grand total of 33-38%, possibly more if service was super exceptional. I have not returned with friends and neighbors because the experience does not justify the cost. They have not wanted to return and I have not dined out a solo breakfast lately. Maybe with this posting Playa Largo Resort will adjust their practices and recognize the value their employees bring to the Resort. Underwealmed by the food and service was passable, but not up to the price point. On the bright side I had the lobster pasta, which had good flavor and was cooked well. It was served barely above room temperature though and the interior of the ravioli was cold. Roast mushrooms with garlic had vinegar as dominant flavor and lacked salt and the flavor of mushrooms or garlic. Mash potatoes also lacked salt and came off as bland. Out of a party of 6 nobody thought their meal was worth the cost but that may have been our fault for staying after the waiter mentioned the steak "is not a good cut of meat" and he had could not make any recommendations since "the employees are not allowed to try any of the menu items". My husband and I love this place. We own a condo nearby, and La Morea is our favorite spot for breakfast. Vera and Anton make great omelets, and the buffet is always full of fresh and delicious food. The staff is super friendly, and the service has always been exceptional. Whether we're taken care of by Judith, Kerry Ann or Paul, we're treated like family. Aside from the waiter telling me he could "maybe make a Bloody Mary and he could find me an olive" the place is very pretty. It is insanely overpriced for the quality of food. The food was very good and I would recommend going here instead of Sol by the sea although it was a little more expensive it's way better in food quality. We're staying at the playa largo and nothing else is open late in Key Largo so we decided to eat here for dinner and try it out. Honestly my food was absolutely delicious. The chicken was amazing and my boyfriends steak was one of the best steaks I've ever had. It's more on the pricey side of things, but I felt the quality of the food reflected the price. The service was excellent (everyone at this hotel is so friendly and accommodating). When my boyfriend ordered the pork chop and they told us they sold the last one, they said they would give him the rib eye for the price of the pork chop, which I thought was really nice and showed they valued our business. Only complaint is there's not really a view of any kind. You would think this beautiful hotel would put this more upscale restaurant in a location where you can see the water, but it's kind of in a dark corner of the hotel. read more

My blackened fish that was $40 wasn't blackened and had enough sauce on it to be a soup. The $14 spinach fondue entree side had like these awful generic chips with it like a cheap Mexican restaurant. Excellent experience at restaurant last night. Arrived minutes before closing at 10. The hostess Julie was nice as could be in seating us. Service was excellent with Stephanie our waitress providing excellent recommendations. Lamb was excellent and cooked to perfection. New York strip also excellent. I deplore Radicchio so no to that. Apps come .... wait for it... the crab meat something and the Radicchio Avocado thing! Ummm we ordered the shrimp toast not the Avocado! Our waiter argued that I had ordered the Avocado... no , no I did not I answer. Ughhh so far a fail. The crab was a canned product that was so salty and off tasting that I told my husband not to eat it for fear of getting sick! We sent that back. While we waited for our Shrimp Toast a manager brings back The Avocado app saying they were just going to throw it away so we may as well pick on it. (How magnanimous if him!) This restaurant has reopened as a farm-to-table restaurant rather than the old steakhouse concept and is fantastic. The ambiance sets the mood, and the staff is excellent to talk with and is just so pleasant and accomodating! The food is excellent as well, the menu is unique with items such as the shrimp toast, which was delicious and the grouper is a total hit! Try the chocolate wave for dessert, you definitely won't be disappointed! I wish this restaurant the best with its new endeavors, we will be back for dinner as well as the new brunch buffet we heard they have on Sundays! Thank you!! read more
