Our first French meal in Paris. Wonderful Parisian ambiance. Food was decent. Presentation was superb. Service was good.

On the way to Eiffel Tower, we decided to find a restaurant off the beaten path of the typical tourists to find genuine French cuisine that is not priced accordingly to tourists. La Gauloise is within walking distance to the Eiffel Tower. We were attracted to the restaurant due to its authentic French offerings and stylish interior that makes it feel like you have taken a time machine a couple hundred years back to a French Bistro. I ordered the escargot and coq au vin. Both the dishes that I ordered were very good and priced moderately (reasonable in my opinion). The service was great, our coats were taken upon entering, English menus supplied to us, and a waiter willing to inform us on dishes we have never heard of before. Such welcomeness made us want to try everything on the menu! Great food, I loved dining here. - Ansel Ponce Diama

This restaurant was chosen by a local colleague for a business dinner. I had briefly checked the Yelp reviews on our way to the restaurant and I was concerned with the low ratings. If it were me, I wouldn't haven taken a chance for a group based on the reviews, but it was an outstanding meal! 5 courses and each one was better than the last. Service was top-notch and the wine choices were spot-on! Couldn't have asked for a better dinner or dining experience for a business dinner with international colleagues from 5 different countries.

Had an amazing 5 course meal here for 75 euro per person plus wine. They started with an amuse bouche that was a fun take on smoked salmon. This was followed by foie gras with caramelized onions which was very tasty and sweet. The main courses we chose were the chicken with some kind of salted pork over fermented cabbage, and a nice this steak. Both entrees were cooked perfectly. We then had a cheese course that was too much for us as we were already stuffed to the gills. Then came desert which included a super tall souffle that they open for you and pour in Gran Marnier and they leave the bottle if you want to put more in, and a sort of chocolate lava cake thing that was not as impressive but was served with salted caramel ice cream which was very good. Then they even give you little madeleines at the end. Not that you have room to eat them. I would have given this meal 5 stars but they let some guy in a suit come by and offer 3 small flowers to my dining companion, I thought mabe this was part of the dining experience, it was not, as he then had the gall to ask for 10! Euros...10! We were inside a nice restaurant, why was this happening? I asked him to répétez s'il vous plaît, as I couldn't believe the price, and then gave us a mean mug look when we handed them back and refused. It left a bit of a sour taste in what was otherwise a perfect meal.

Yum! Came here with my sister after arriving in Paris late night (on holiday). It was one of the first restaurants we stumbled upon, after checking into our hotel, that was still open for dinner (it was almost 10pm). We shared between us a mesclun salad, travers de porc avec un sauce aigne douce - a French version of bbq ribs (but much fancier and more delicious), mashed potatoes, a salmon dish, and creme brulee. The food was all really amazing and our waiter was friendly. He didn't speak much English though so I had to rely on my high school French to get us through the evening.

Do not get the fish! Was not fresh!

The richness of the flavor and the texture which is not reminiscent of the traditional roasted duck or foie gras, but rather a much more like a luxurious and indulgent version. We enjoyed our dinner on the outside of the restaurant after about a 20-30 minute wait. The bone marrow had the best flavor I've experienced for the dish. However, it is definitely overshadowed by the rich flavor of the foie gras. This experience was unforgettable, with our view of Parisian streets on a brisk, April night. We even came back on our last night, but didn't realize the hours on Google maps was for the deli. The restaurant closes earlier, before 9:00 PM. This meal got us thinking about Paris in a positive light, and we hope to be able to come back to eat the amazing dishes again!

They had a number of goods to choose from and I ended up buying a few things for souvenirs. As for the actual restaurant, they had a number of delicious sounding items on their menu. Our server was very attentive to us and helped us decide on our dinner orders. Similar to the other restaurants though. After our food was delivered, it was far in between when we were checked on again. And after dessert it took even longer for our server to bring the bill. Overall, the food was a letdown. I do not exaggerate when I say that the frog legs just tasted like slightly flavored water. My friend's ravioli had a fairly decent flavored sauce but the pasta was a bit chewy. My friend's duck breast was pretty tough; I had noticed the table next to us also ordered it and they seemed to have trouble finishing/cutting theirs as well. As for my steak with foie gras, well the steak was once again tough and the foie gras was weirdly stringy. It was soft for the most part but there were parts that were tough and stringy. Maybe that's a section that's generally separated in the preparation process and it was missed? In any case it was disappointing. What wasn't disappointing was dessert though; perfectly sweet and balanced.

There are two tables essentially in the kitchen (a true "Chef's Table" arrangement) and maybe 6 tables in the adjoining room. We were welcomed warmly. Deborah was the hostess and server. Chef Hugo is visible in the kitchen, working very hard to make everything just perfect. They brought bread immediately (my husband loved the sliced baguette--it was perfect and chewy as it should be, but not hard). We ordered a bottle of wine, a Macon Villages, which was perfect. I had the cucumber salad appetizer, which was so fresh. My husband ordered the ravioli appetizer--tiny little rectangles in a scrumptious sauce--a work of art. I ordered the fish and shrimp plate. The sauce was amazing and it was a huge portion of tender white fish. My husband had the lamb with frites. It was nicely seasoned & perfectly done. For dessert, my husband enjoyed a chocolate treat and I had refreshing raspberry sorbet. Deborah was so friendly and solicitous throughout the meal. I have never felt so well taken care of. (I have seen some comments from people who are unhappy that they can't just walk in. They don't appear to understand that there is only one seating. People arrive when they do and they linger. Empty tables seen from the street do not mean the place is not fully booked. Make a reservation well ahead of time. It is worth it!)

The restaurant itself isn't small, but really not big, so it's definitely worthwhile to make a reservation at least a week or so on advance, otherwise you're pushing your luck. Everyone ordered steak frites (2 rump steak, 2 flank) and no one was disappointed. Steaks were cooked to order, although medium here in France is more like medium rare in the States, just be advised. The restaurant itself is lively and fun with lots of chatting, laughing and good times being shared. Desserts were Crème Brûlée and Apple Crumble, neither of which were disappointing. We definitely enjoyed our dinner and would likely return again. This time with a reservation made well in advance.

We were seated at a table facing the smaller street with IKEA City. Not much people-watching happened given shops were already closed in the evening and thus less people shopping on the streets. We ordered the croque monsieur and croque madame. The difference between the two is that the croque madame comes with a fried sunny side up egg. This was heavy but so yummy! The egg yolk makes a great sauce to soak up this cheesy and hammy toast. This came with a salad on the side which had a vinegar based dressing coated on it. The only thing is we had miscommunication with the waitress about drinks. We asked for water (l'eau) but they gave us distilled water in a bottle which costed us 8 euros. I learned it's important to learn to specifically ask for carafe d'eau (tap water in French) to get free water! Felt a bit bad that we were overcharged. Just gotta be careful with communicating next time. All in all, I enjoyed trying the amazing sandwich that is a croque madame. Wanted to give 4 stars for the food but the bottled water still irks me.
