The place was nearly empty on a Saturday night. The service was abysmal, forgetting wine, food, the bill, etc. My steak ordered Medium arrived cold and raw inside. Let me start off by saying the food was really good. HOWEVER, this is what made the abysmal service even more disappointing. After 45 minutes passed without even a drink order, we quickly realized that service here was just plain awful. For our first course we received butter (but no bread). The "excellent" wait staff followed this up by bringing us the incorrect entrees. We had to find the host in order to actually get the wait staff to come to our table to correct this. The cherry on top was being overcharged by 40 euros. We were refunded the €40 in cash, which is totally useless if leaving Paris the next day. While the food was good and I'm sure others have had a pleasant experience, it's not worth rolling the dice on a ruined meal on during your trip to where there are so many great choices. read more

We walked past 30 places before settling on this place. The food was superb and memorable; I had a truffle risotto that was better than anything I have had , and I have been working on risotto for years. Located just off the corner of Les Invalides, Café de l'Esplanade sits in all of its Paris Café splendor. Facing the street from the café, Invalides is to your right and the Esplanade des Invalides is to your left. Les Invalides is a large and famous war memorial, war museum and resting place of Napoleon. Napoleon's tomb, like much of Paris is over the top. The Esplanade des Invalides is a large open field of grass - imaging two football fields end to end - with picnicking, footballers and bocce ball, etc. How do you know its real: 1. not all tourists, 2. lots of dogs - small terriers, poodles, Frenchies (my personal favorite). If weather and an open table permits, sit outdoors. Speak some French if you can, but don't be intimidated if you cannot - the staff is accommodating. At least learn to ask for a carafe of water and the check. Tap water in Paris is great - really. It makes no sense to purchase bottled water unless you prefer sparkling to still. The food is very good, but what is the deal with salmon? Like the club sandwich had a salmon option. So too does the eggs Benedict??? I don't get the French slavish obsession with salmon - even in the quiches - I just don't get it??? But I digress...the salad, as is the custom, is simple and outstanding (without salmon). The service left nothing to be desired. There is a high ratio of wait staff to customers so there is always a lot of attention being paid to the table and to the customer. It's not inexpensive. Club sandwich 22 Euro. Prosciutto y melon, 12 Euro. Remember, you're paying for the location, the service, the quality, everything! People enjoying a nice meal on a beautiful day in a beautiful place with an incredible view - doesn't get much better, does it? read more

We had a very good waiter and we ordered four distinct dishes which were all different styles and each was prepared to perfection. my daughter tried snails for the first time and reported that they were the best snails that she's ever had. This is one of my favorite restuarants in Paris. I go about 2-3 times per month for business, and there are only so many times one can eat steak frites or tartare. Eventually you just get sick of it. At first, yeah its great. Eventually it does get a little old. That is why this place is so refreshing, So very French but doesn't try to serve the same stuff over and over, that gets tired if you are in France often. My absolute favorites are the spring rolls with cilantro, and the chicken with curry sauce, with a side of mash potatoes that are to die for. I am absolutely in love with this place. You can also see local Parisian and EU politicians frequenting this place. I love to get a seat outside among the fabulous older women of Paris, who gossip while having a cocktail, making fun of the loud tourists and cheap fashion as it passes. read more

A Costes, as you expect them: expensive, not bad but a bit bland for many dishes (e.g. the €36 chicken with mango chutney and rice, very un-impressive), quite good for some (e.g. the €14 pavlova). Overall, I wouldn't recommend this place if you have to pay for it (duh, so many better options for this price) but it is a safe bet for a business lunch. read more

The atmosphere is nice; however, the service is very mediocre. We didn't have food, just a quick drink outside. The drinks are quite expensive which may be the costs of cushioned chairs and marbled tables. Great spot and nice decoration. Very Parisian style with the pros and cons. The food is correct but do not expect gastronomy. I will recommend to get at least 2-3 courses if you are hungry as the portions are very small. The worst thing is the service. Many waiters but you have to wait a lot. They do seem very well organized. Be informed this is a Costes restaurant. So if you like the style you will know what to expect. read more

Pretty and well-located. This was recommended by our host. We came with our children, and this is not really a "family" place. That said, the staff were welcoming and treated us very nicely. The food was good, as was the service. This was pricier than most of our other dinners at neighborhood spots, but was busy and bustling -- clearly with a lot of Parisians -- so they seem to know what they are doing and to be charging a fair price. Impeccible service, great food -- I went for lunch with a friend and her ten month old son -- shall we say that he was tired as he spent most of our lunch crying and crawling across our table, and the floor. Much to my astonishment the staff were adorable, despite the obvious disruption. They were polite, attentive and understanding. The food meanwhile was excellent. Ordered escargot, foie gras, veal and angus steak. Thoroughly enjoyed the escargot and foie gras, the angus and veal were ok, I've had better. Really good location, and has a nice ambience. My biggest peeve is the service. Took 20 mins to get us water, and I felt as if the wait staff were kind of condescending (we couldn't read their French menus so we asked for help, and the tone at which they "helped" sounded condescending to me, maybe it's an accent thing I'm misinterpreting?). Maybe because we were dressed casually that's why they were snubbing us? The other patrons were in suits and dresses after all. But heck, our bill came down to around €200~ for just 2 of us. It looked like they had enough people, and the restaurant at that time wasn't terribly busy. The other restaurants we went to were friendlier, so although the food was good, we didn't really enjoy ourselves because we felt we were being snubbed. read more

Move expensive than your basic cafe/brassiere...but the combination of location (edge of traffic circle at Invalides), ambiance, superlative cocktails and excellent food did the trick. Had been a full week in Paris and I still had not had the classic steak and frites. Homerun here! Best frites I had in our 3 weeks in France and the steak was KILLER good. All while sitting in front of the cannon fronting Napoleon's Tomb watching Parisians whiz by. Clientele appeared heavily local and well known to the waiters.
