I was craving pineapple empanadas yesterday, so I drove all the way from Rita Ranch to the south side to get some. Lady: How many pineapple? Me: 6, those are my favorite Lady: How many pumpkin? Me: 4 pumpkin Lady: How many apple? Me: I don't like apple, but I'll take ONE for my daughter to try It went on like this until I figured I was buying too many pastries. So then I get home and I eat a pastry, but not an empanada, I'm saving those for breakfast the next day. Well today was the next day, and in the morning I made coffee, pour it in my togo container, grabbed and empanada, got in my car and off I go. So I bite the empanada, and it's APPLE. So I thought what are the odds that I picked the ONE apple empanada. ugh So I get home tonight thinking I'll have some hot tea along with a pineapple empanada, and guess what? They're ALL APPLE!! Every. Single. One. Of. Them. The rest of the pastries were tasty. The lady, although human, was friendly, and if it wasn't because she gave me a lot of what I didn't not want, they would get 5 stars. After eating a great lunch at El Cuero Canello, we just HAD to stop at La Estrella's and take home a box of goodies. This was a first-time visit. I had an interesting experience with the lady who was serving me: She just started filling the box full of pastries and I asked her if I could choose the ones to go in the box. lol. She smiled and said, "Yes." But a lot of her choices still wound up going home with me. I think if I hadn't stopped her, I would have brought home the entire store. A dozen was pretty good for my first visit. I'm not sure of all that I got, but all that I've eaten so far has been fabulous and also beautifully presented and colorful. When I return, I'm going to load up on those empanadas. It sounds like I need to get there early before they sell out. 12 wonderful pastries and the total bill was less than $6.00. Amazing. I've been buying La Estrella goodies at grocery stores whenever I can find them. But I FINALLY got down to their bakery and was in heaven! I love the smell as you walk in of buttery, sugary deliciousness. I am not a fan of all mexican pastries but I have my faves and they are the seashell looking buns called pan de huevo and the doughnuts coated in sugar. So I picked up several of each of these and of course couldn't leave without a bag of mexican torta bread - SO good! This spot is definitely a rougher older version of their nice new bakery in San Agustin but its authentic and a must try. read more

This sweet little bakery is so fresh! Tucked away at San Mercado, there are very fresh pastries, breads and tortillas here and it is open every day of the week. Mornings look like the time to come, but even at 11 PM the tortillas were still warm! Picked up 4 pastries, and it was a total of $2.70 or so. Inexpensive. The tortillas are so delicious, and they have whole wheat ones. The mango empanada was crispy, fresh, flaky and amazingly good. The mango, wow! They had what looked a "snowball" which was a soft cookie like thing and that was just amazing. And I got this empanada-looking item that had a thin layer of brown sugar along it. Soooooo good. There is also mesquite honey in a jar, donuts, and makings for tamales. Lots of goodies here. They stay open an hour later during the Farmer's Market on Thursday. Nice atmosphere, come and sit down at a table in the open air courtyard and munch on some goodies. read more

Love getting my tortillas from La Estrella Bakery. The tortillas are always warm and fresh even in the later morning. I also love getting their empanadas and cookies. Everyone loves the empanadas and tries to remember which one is which (the number of wholes in the empanada is the secret). I can never remember which is which, but I love them all - pumpkin, apple, pineapple, etc. Both locations are great and definitely worth the drive. I live about 30 minutes away, but will make the drive to get their fresh tortillas! read more

This place is awesome. Hands down, the BEST Red Menudo in Tucson! It is so tasty and broth has a texture that is just right! Best of all, it is not even spicy. It is the perfect menudo. This was a new experience for me. Back home Mexican bread shops are self-service. So, you walk in, grab a tray and pile it on. Not this place. It's all behind glass and the staff will bag what you want. Prices are very reasonable as well! It's really dark inside so it took me a while to figure out what I wanted. However, once Came home with my treats, I have to say...the bread is good. I wasn't very impressed, but it is good. The service was good as well. The staff is attentive and knowledgeable. Ok on a quick note the empanadas are amazing. Picked up a few to take to family. Even after the long car ride and waiting til next morning, they were soft and still incredibly sweet. We did pineapple and cherry, sadly they were out of apple. Grabbed a pack of hotdog buns to prove way these are the best and used at half the Sonoran dog stands around Tucson. Estrella did not fail to prove my point, though now the family is a bit upset since they don't have daily access to this like I do. A coworker brought in empanads from here a few weeks ago. They were still hot when we got them... Omg. They were amazing. I had a pumpkin and an apple one. We also had cherry and lemon. The huge box was gone quick. I went the next morning to get some.... So good. Very local place. I absolutely love this place! If you have never had a Mexican pastry then you are missing out. I stop here every couple a months to grab pastries for my work. I was surprised that most of my coworkers had never even had a pan de huevo which is what I grew up eating as a kid. La Estrella gives you three options; vanilla, chocolate and regular (all delicious)! I normally stop in when they first open and you can smell the sweetness wafting thru the air. The ladies behind the counter are fast and efficient. They pull the freshest items from the back so that you leave with warm donuts, pastries and cookies! The prices are incredible! This is simply one of the best bakeries I have ever been too! My favorites are the piggies AKA cochinos. They are absolutely heavenly! They have a wide assortment of pastries, scrumptious donuts, and the best fresh flour tortillas I have ever had! I felt like I was walking into a candy store! Because we didn't pick a lot of traditional pastries the wonderful gal who helped us gave us a pineapple empanada and another pastry (round with ridges looks like a conch shell) to try. They were both absolutely delicious. When back in the South Side (which would be very soon in the near future) we will be back to try more delicious goodies! read more

This is one of the best bakeries in town by far. We went last weekend to purchase 5 dozen tortillas for a party so we HAD to get some donuts/pastries while we were there. My husband likes the Mexican pastries so I can't speak on those but the donuts are to die for. They are a bit dense, but still sweet and soft in the middle. I prefer the regular glazed donuts or the chocolate covered ones. The tortillas are also so fresh that they are sitting there on the counter waiting for you piping hot! While I was visiting Tucson I was in search of a particular pan dulce I recall having as I child. I was referred to La Estrella bakery, I found what I was looking for but cannot for the life of me tell what they are called. But on a whim while cashing out I noticed they had spinach/cheese tamales, so while it's lent I decided to purchase half a dozen. While I don't remember what it costs I do know that these Lil tamales were to die for! They had a tinge of jalapeño to the spinach & cheese tamale just enough where you just wanna keep eating them, not to spicey but added a nice flavor. Trust me! You won't miss the meat. Not sure if they are Vegan but definitely vegetarian for sure! The staff are very friendly as well.. now for the pan dulce, I would describe it as it looking like a crocodile but really it doesn't matter as all you have to do is point to what you want & it is placed in a box for you to take home. The inside filling was bright red, a little deferent from what I recall. I can't imagine what that red dye is doing to your body! Nonetheless, it was good. I also bought a dozen tortillas, someone on Yelp mentioned they were like homemade, well I hate to differ. They LOOK homemade but homemade don't have a floury texture every-time You place your hands on the tortillas. Check it out! read more

We saw reviews on yelp and were visiting Tucson. The churros and apple turnover were very fresh. The slice of sprinkle white cake was also very fresh and tasty. Sweetened just right. I want to give them a better review, I really do. Pastries are really good, empanadas are outstanding. It's just their customer service, don't look for warm and fuzzy. Recently called ahead for an order, was told by the lady there would be a line, but not to get in since I phoned ahead. Walk in the door and there is a line, go to the register as instructed only to hear An employee by the cash register say "if you walk in somewhere and there's a line what do you think you do". Thanks to the Yelp recommendations, I went here for the donuts, and boy am I happy that I did. While I like Krispy Kreme as much as the next guy, I prefer my donuts a tad bit more pillow-like, and that's exactly the kind of donut you get at La Estrella. Sweet, soft, spongy -- it's everything that a classic donut should be. Their empanadas are good, especially the pumpkin, and they have some really delicious conchas. Not everything they sell is a grand slam, but they're all hits in their own right, and the pricing is almost heinously low. I love this bakery! I first came here on Christmas Eve, and New Years Eve (or shall I say "attempted" to come here as there was a line out the door and into the parking lot). My intention was to stock up on Mexican baked goods for both holidays which ultimately ended in failure for obvious reasons. After those holidays, I was finally able to get my hands on these amazing baked goods. It seems tobe a well kept secret that :a Estrella bakery supplies not only El Guero Canelo their hot dog buns and yummy torta but bread and tortillas most of Tucsons best Mexican restaurants. I stopped in here onmy way to to LA to pick up a dozen of the yummy tortas and hot dog buns we had at El Gueros. It was SUPER cheap! 1 dozen freshly baked warm rolls for under $6! The menudo hits the spot time and time again. You can't have their menudo without their pan birodito and pan de huevo! They know how to make Sunday morning breakfast perfect.
