This was my first visit to a Peruvian restaurant, or a Peruvian anything, for that matter. I confess to being unduly influenced by Miami Vice, especially Glenn Frey's "Smuggler's Blues". The TV series is long gone, and my attitude is now properly adjusted. The upper floor dining area can be reached by a magnificent staircase (or an elevator). The view outside is stunning at sunset, waves, beach, breakers and all. But be sure to be seated on the water side, because the parking lot dominates the view otherwise. Two dramatically lit bars are very eye-catching, one upstairs, the other down below. There is something about dining beneath a soaring cupola that is elegant beyond description. Soft music enhanced the mood. My order was BBQ Ribs ($19.00), nominally an appetizer, and a side of coconut rice ($6.00). The ribs were a very generous portion, tender, and glazed with a truly excellent BBQ sauce. Honestly, the glaze was better than I've had in restaurants specializing in ribs. The coconut rice was as good as I could imagine, perfectly steamed, and a generous portion to boot. The combination was mouth watering as well as satisfying. Peruvian beer, specifically Cuzquena Lager was the perfect libation. Karen C. was the server, and she displayed absolutely no characteristics of a Miami Vice villain. She was prompt, accurate and friendly. She did not need an attitude adjustment. If you're really hungry share three between two people but we got four between my wife and I and we are stuffed and have leftovers. We ate on the second level which had a really nice view of the ocean but the first level also looks nice and has outdoor seating. My only drawback is the service. The atmosphere sitting outdoor was cozy because of the fire element which is why I gave it 2 star. The server, manager and food was unpleasant! I ordered the Loma Salado with meat rare and an egg on top, that's not what I got. The meat was well done, no egg and the sauce was sour. I was really surprised when it came right out in three minutes. They redid it for me, which was the right thing to do and I appreciated this. However, I had lost my appetite. The server said the manager was going to come out and talk to me. He came out, delivered my food with nothing to say and left. Then I gave my credit card to the server and told her that I'd like to pay for it, and if I can get it to go box - she had an off-putting unfriendly energy and her reaction expressed as if I was inconveniencing her, not welcoming and non-communicative. Moreover, the manager came back and handed me my receipt and credit card - still he did not say anything, but just placed it down on the table. I have never met a manager in my life who was taciturn, withdrawn and disconnected. It would be in his best interest to connect, communicate, stay consistent and problem solve when a customer has an issue. I limit my time in restaurants that does not provide a positive experience. Had an awesome dinner at La Costanera! The views from the restaurant are amazing, and we thoroughly enjoyed our entire meal. To drink, we tried the Kiguapo and Chicha Morada mocktails and loved both. The Kiguapo was bright, tropical, and refreshing, while the Chicha Morada gave off total fall vibes with its warm hit of cinnamon. For appetizers, we ordered the Cebiche Mixto with yucca chips and it was delicious! We also got the Pulpo a la Parrilla, which was fantastic. The octopus was cooked perfectly and wasn't chewy at all. For our entrées, we went with the Peruvian Paella with squid ink and the Ají de Gallina. The paella was incredible, the squid ink added such a complex, deep flavor. We celebrated our 12 year anniversary here the other weekend and had such a wonderful meal. The server was super friendly and attentive. They had a sweet card for us when we sat down. All of our food was just as superb (maybe even better) than I had remembered when we had dined at their old location past many years ago! Glad to see they have kept up the high caliber of food. The fish in the ceviche really stood out. We had asked for recommendations along the way and our server was super helpful with recommendations. I tried a unique drink that was on special and trusted her because she said it was good. It was the BEST! It had a unique purple color and she even described the unique ingredients that caused the color. She even brought champagne and dessert on the house at the end. It's always good vibes at La costanera, except during my most recent visit we got served raw fish. On a Friday in early April we visited half moon bay to celebrate a couple milestones for my family. We ordered the lomo saltado, arroz chaufa, and pescado costanera and some mimosas. The arroz chaufa is excellent. For some reason they only refunded 1/3 of the dish after we clearly showed them part of the fish was still raw. It was literally cold/frozen to the bite. Why does refunding 1/3 of the dish make sense? Even if the logic is that we ate some of it, what we ate gave us a stomachache and could have been parasites at worst? I understand the restaurant didn't have many people during that time and the margins were slim on a Friday, but by the time it was getting late the tables started to fill up. Disappointed read more

I am usually a fan of the Altamirano line of restaurants and have had wonderful experiences at his restaurant. I was under impressed with the service at this restaurant. The food is always good but the service was lacking. I had a reservation for 5pm and was sat it the back corner. There was much better seating with a view of the ocean ,but we were sat at a table with a view of the kitchen service entrance and wall of old globes. Our waiter came, asked us if we needed more time to look at the menu then disappeared for a lengthy time before coming back. We finally ordered and I walked to the bar to ask a question and no one was there it was kitchen lineup time. Bartender came back got my order and I returned to my table food apps came out didn't see waiter again for some time waiter brought drink and said other items would be out shortly. She disappeared again, food didn't come out she came back said food would be out a second time and then it was another wait. We finished entrees she finally came back and asked about dessert and I asked for the check immediately and I think she understood I wasn't really happy with her service. Our waitress, Jucinda (I apologize if I misspelled your name), was so personable, fun, professional and sweet and took great care of us! We were celebrating our 49th anniversary. I'd definitely reccommend trying the ceviche sampler - wasn't a huge fan of the chips we had to order on the side to scoop them but the fish was sooo good. It's also really filling. The palta rellena was a unique dish that was good too. Yucca fries made for a great side. I did find the tequeños de camarones to be just okay. We came at 4 PM on a Saturday and it was a beautiful day to sit outside. The ambiance makes you feel like you're on vacation. However, despite the restaurant being basically empty, the service was pretty lacking. It took our server a lot of time to clear out plates, bring our boxes, and get us the check. The restaurant is beautifully decorated, with high ceilings, nautical decor and beautiful views along the water. Staff are very friendly and attentive. I started with the honey moon bay which had chamomile infused gin and the pineapple and honey made it a bright, flavorful drink. The greeting was great, it was the service and lack of attention that went seriously wrong. Our server was Mark, he started off well with explaining the menu and greeting us. The food took a while to get to us, had to ask for water and drinks multiple times since we were told it was coming but it took a looong time. No silverware in sight.... When Mark came by he brought the biggest spoon he probably could find which added even more insult to his lack of attention and service. Came for my brother's bday, helmed by Peruvian chef Carlos Altamirano, it frequently appears on the Michelin Guide. The food and cocktails are a blend of traditional and modern and the interior design features the same theming. We were seated near the outside doors which is a terrible position, it felt like a column was blocking our view and every time a patron or staff would go in or out we would be blasted by cold air. We've had plenty of Peruvian so we tried some atypical entrees. I don't know if these are very unpopular to order because it took a really long time for the mains to come out after the appetizers and each entree had something majorly wrong with it. Gin Tonic: Reminded me of how it is in the UK, has more controlled garnishing of lemon peel, basil, and berries. Tasted fine. Ceviche Tasting: sample sizes of fresh fish, ahi tuna, and a mix of fish, shrimp, squid, and mussels. The portions were great for our table of 5 and they were especially good with the house made potato chips. These were so good we were really looking forward to the entrees. Yuca Croquettes: Yuca stuffed with chorizo and raisins. With Peruvian yellow chili pepper curry. Tasted incredible but the garnishing made it feel dragged through a garden and completed with some of the more delicate flavors. There was also way too much curry on bottom and all the hard work forming and frying the yucca balls seemed wasted because the curry made it soggy. Peruvian Paella: Mussels, squid, clams, and prawns with a Peruvian pepper base and shrimp broth. This was super watery and confused me, a lot of the yelp pictures also looked like rice in broth and I thought maybe Peruvian Paella is supposed to be like that but I looked up some Peruvian Paella recipes and it doesn't seem wet. Pescado a lo Macho: Roasted fish over seafood stew (Mussels, clams, calamari, and shrimp), mushrooms, in arocoto-paprika sauce, and served with coconut rice. The fish and mushrooms were fine but the rice was undercooked and hard, it was the base for the fish and every bite was unpleasant because of it. We've attempted to come here a few times without reservations, but the wait has always been too long (more than an hour), and they are sometimes short staffed and honest about it. Tucked far away from the city, the restaurant used to be in Pacifica, where in 2012 and 2013 they were awarded a Michelin star. The new location is in Half Moon Bay, still complete with ocean views. The first (!) bar is just past the host stand and before the staircase (!!) leading to the main dining room. The decor is phenomenal and the lighting during dinner sets it just right. The food. Fantastic. Exquisite. Fulfilling for the heart and soul, not just the stomach. -Pulpo a la Parrilla- an excellent small plate. Smokey from the grill and full of citrus from the salsa criolla -Chicharrones de la Casa, Calamari- no surprises here, a nicely breaded and fried calamari, with peppers and onions to boot. -Black Cod Aguachile- with leche de tigre and accompaniments. A fantastic special of the night, truly exemplifies fresh, citrusy flavors with a delightfully buttery cut of raw black cod -Chuletitas de Cordero- lamb chops with potato gratin and chimichurri. We've been to LC since its location on Montara Beach. This one has a different vibe, but still very HMB. Overall food was great as always. Drinks are pretty awesome, too. Busy weekend since it was in 70s hovering 80s. We always get the tender lomo saltado, and they had a special salmon tiradito, burger for the teen, clam chowder was nice and creamy and dulce de leche. We were disappointed that every table got the chips and dip some even refill but we never did, and I thought it was an orderable appetizer item. Then I recall getting them previously. So at the end of our meal we asked our server and she says oh yes that's complimentary and it's the busser's job. The pescado a lo macho is THE dish to get. 5/5, like a seafood curry. It might sound funky but the seafood fish (I think swordfish was the fish of the day), cooked in the coconut sauce was divine. My husband got this dish and I could not stop taking bites. It also came with a LOT of food. Lomo saltado 3/5, was yummy but a tad on the saltier side. The dish didn't come with too much meat, and I was expecting more for the price. Empanadas: 4/5, solid. The passion fruit syrup makes it feel like an explosion of flavor in your mouth, balanced well with the vanilla bean taste of the panna cotta. The interior is decorated with a beachy sea theme, nice enough to come for a birthday or celebration. This time we had a Pisco Sour and a Smoky Spark, both excellent. On this particular day we got to see two little seal pups playfully bobbing up and down in the water below us. People walked about with their dogs, surfers submerged from the water, RV 's had some sort of rest stop, and several little taverns were also along the path. Although it may sound like a lot of activity ... it really just worked ... to create a quaint little spot surrounding the restaurant. As far as food, I had an appetizer of scallops, potatoes and avocado, some wonderful plantains and a buttery crab sandwich ... my friend had a fish stew with prawns, squid and swordfish in coconut sauce and paired with coconut rice. Thought about making a trek out to HMB this past weekend and decided to find a lunch spot. We came across La Costanera and saw that it was dog-friendly and live music on the weekend, so it was an easy decision. Highly recommend making reservations in advance! We ordered the ceviche of the day ($29), causa marina ($26), yuca frita ($14), macho ($39). The ceviche was very good and fresh. I prefer ceviche over poke because I like the tang from the lime and I think it's healthier compared to the saucier Hawaiian version (I realize it's completely different from a cultural standpoint). The causa marina was presented beautifully and looked like a little cake. It comes with mashed potatoes, avocado, and seared scallops. I probably could have happily finished this dish on my own and not shared. The macho is a seafood soup that comes with coconut rice and it was delightful! The seafood (fish, clams, mussels, etc). were all cooked perfectly and nothing was overcooked - which is often the case for these kinds of dishes. The coconut rice was also very good and the coconut aroma was definitely there. The misses: yuca frita wasn't anything exciting. I would have preferred a spicier dipping sauce or something to make it taste a little more interesting. I LOVE yuca, but got bored munching on these yuca fries. Also, we asked for a side of hot sauce and got charged $1 for a tiny, miniscule serving. It was laughable, really. The hot sauce was NOT worth it which made it even worse. It was cold and tasted more like a barely spicy tomato palace cleanser. Not something I would be proud to serve and label as hot sauce. I would really appreciate it if staff would tell us in advance if things are going to cost extra, even if it's a nominal fee. Service overall was pretty slow. They were busy and tried to be friendly, but oftentimes our requests would be forgotten and I would have to ask another staff member. The other thing I noticed was that all the other tables around us seemed to get complimentary chips and we did not....I realized this quite late in our meal and didn't even bother asking. We had Sat lunch here, over all it is a pretty good experiance. We love seafood stew, adobo has big quantity of pork shoulder, Beet salad is good.. just one small thing: when waitress ask us any drinks we opt to just water, she ask us bottled water or tap water, We didn't think much just choose bottled water ( a bottle size like red wine) it turned out each bottle of water cost $10, we (5 of us) consumed 2 bottles in the meal, and at the same time when I looked at other tables, all have "tap" water served ( a glass jar of water with a piece lemon inside maybe..) No other table has the bottled water we had( Saratoga Still water, blue bottle, very distinct..) feeling being upsold on this, other than this the food mostly are pretty tasty and good... read more
