I came here for my beloved vanilla matcha tea and I ended-up staying here fo the past three hours. In fact 90% of the people here were doing work on their laptops. It's a huge open space and the vibe vibe is very chill. It's all bench style seating which I wouldn't characterize as comfortable because of the lack of cushion, however it actually made me focus on my tasks. The old school hardwood floors and white-washed brick give the plaxe a retro feel. The matcha was made just the way I loke it and it was fantastic as usual. I stepped in on the New Years Eve around 2pm, because it was just too hot to have hot coffee. I had my usual, a black & tan, and it was perfect. Just what I had wanted. The barista was very nice and friendly, and the space is really big and spacious. Want to alert Yelpers to an incomprehensible decision recently made by La Colombe to change the formula of their previously unsweetened chocolate syrup to include a sweetener. I call this incomprehensible because while it is impossible for a customer to un-sweeten a beverage made with a sweetened syrup, it is extremely easy to add sweetener to a beverage made with an unsweetened syrup. La Colombe--in my experience of the major and minor chains and, for that matter, pretty much every other purveyor of a mocha--had been almost unique. (I found one place in Fairhaven, WA--shoutout to the Old Independent Coffeehouse--that made one, too, but that's about it and 2,700 miles is a bit of a hike.) The unsweetened mocha was, literally, the only reason my household patronizes La Colombe over other coffee shops. I am not a true connoisseur of drinks made from the roasted coffee bean; while I certainly find some lattes or cappuccinos slightly more or less to my taste, I have, for the last several years, walked a mile to La Colombe more weekends than not (sometimes twice in a single weekend) for their mocha. There are actually three locations about the same distance from my house and to get to any of them, I pass other perfectly good coffee shops (any of which make a latte or cappuccino I like just as much as La Colombe's) on the way. I am well aware that, compared to most problems people face in the world, this is mind-numbingly petty. However, La Colombe is in the luxury drink business (nobody needs a $4.50 mocha) and this mocha was the sort of small luxury that made every week better. And now they have ruined it and cost their stores several very loyal customers who have dozens of alternatives for their non-unsweetened-mocha coffee drinks. Congratulations to La Colombe on a very dumb business decision; welcome to the herd. read more

All of the harsh reviews I read were about the staff and let me just say, the women that helped me and my friends were SO KIND. They let us try basically everything on tap and were beyond patient with our immature coffee palates lol My latte was good! Not the best but not the worst. Some reviewers mentioned the baristas are not very friendly - while I agree they are not very smiley people, I disagree that they are unfriendly. The coffee is delicious! There's not much more to it! I love La Colombe coffee and love trying the different beans and blends that they have. The craft coffee is so good, and it's so great that you can get coffee on tap! Even just a simple cup of coffee is delicious, but my favorite is the cold brew because it has great flavor! I also really love that you can choose the bean for your coffee from a short list of what they're brewing that day. Anytime I'm in the area, I always try to grab a few boxes of freshly roasted beans to take back with me. The great thing is that any time you buy a box, you get a free coffee to go with it, so that makes it worth it. The atmosphere is pretty hipster and it's large and spacious, but my one complaint is that there's no free wifi. If you're looking for a space to study and need some wifi, I would try to get some from the WeWork upstairs, but I wouldn't count on La Colombe to have wifi available for you to use. read more

Big spacious venue with ample seating and tables to sit at. This is a really good place to come with friends, a coffee date, studying, or just to chill. There isn't a WiFi though but I think everyone uses the WiFi network of upstairs but I wasn't able to connect to it personally (but I saw others working on laptops so I'm sure it connects). Big windows and natural light makes this place very relaxing. I ordered a cappuccino and it came on a cute plate with a tiny spoon (they have very adorable mugs and cups here if you're looking for that aesthetic they gotchu). Loved the atmosphere in this place! Very spacious and open, but not too loud (surprisingly). Really appreciated the kind and fast service I got. They hav a few snacks and fresh baked goods. The coffee is delicious, but the man behind the counter is mean and nasty. I carried my tiny dog in in my arms and ordered coffee. After I paid and while I waited for my order, he loudly scolded me for bringing a dog in, said something along the lines of "can't you read all the signs outside" and basically threw my coffee at me so it almost slipped off the bar, which I think was his intention. If you are a dog owner or dog lover like so many people are, I would avoid this place at all costs. Also avoid if you don't like mean nasty people yelling at you. read more

This is a bright airy space with good coffee, but I felt unimpressed. The seating isn't the most comfortable and there are only 2 outlets in the whole room. The baristas know what they're doing, but I would not make a trek here to sit for a while unless I lived in the neighborhood. My opinion is not shared by all, though. I did speak with the man next to me (without telling him my opinion) and he said that this is his favorite coffee shop and that he commutes there to work (he told me about where the other outlet was so I could get connected). They could easily get rid of the giant high top tables in the back and replace them with smaller tables, because who goes out for coffee in groups? Most of the people in here are by themselves anyway, or with only one other person. For example, one or two people might be occupying a table that seats six. I don't have any problem sitting at the other end of a long table occupied by someone at the other end, but it would be kind of awkward for me to join someone as a ran-do at a table that only seats four. read more

I am a big espresso drinker so I really don't order anything complicated (so I didn't experience any issue that other people had with the service). They usually make a great cup of espresso and I like the idea that they have at least two options - dark and light roast for an espresso. The dark one (which is the standard one) is the one I slightly prefer, but once in a while you can taste the delicateness of the coffee with some rich caramel tones if you try their light roast (I'm not sure how often they change the mix but the last light one I tried was nice and delicate). My two complaints about this place: (i) snack and pastries are high likely to be gone by the afternoon (poor inventory management and demand forecasting) and (ii) it usually takes time to find an empty seat on weekends. Will I come back: Most likely yes. Would I recommend this to other people: Generally yes but most times, no because I don't want more people hanging out and taking up all the seats. read more

Stopped in to La Colombe yesterday (Sunday) for a little pick-me-up post an intense bike-ride from NoMa (intense for me!). First impression: the space is beautiful! So chic in there! Gorgeous, big open space with some tables but not too many, a lovely counter & very fancy-looking coffee machines, including of course, their draft latte & draft drip coffee. Very nice. There was a line almost out the door (the register is straight up when you walk in so I can see the line going out the door rather easily, in this case there were just 4 people in front of us), and overall the place was very crowded. There was not one empty seat/table/high top. The menu: well, they don't do flavors/syrups. This was a bit odd to me...like why not? I'm guessing the mindset here is "our coffee is too good to mask/destroy with disgusting syrups" lol, just guessin' though! Anyway, I pretty much exclusively drink flavored coffee (vanilla) but since no flavors I just got an iced drip coffee & I must say, it was great. The flavor was delicious, and as I told my hubby, I don't often drink plain iced coffee bc the coffee flavor tends to be too acidic for me, it has sort of a sting to it, but not here. Their coffee was delicious. My hubs got a cortado, his go-to fav coffee style, and he loved it. Lovely spot, very modern, they give you your coffee on a counter with a little plate and a big spoon, it all felt very cool. This is by far my favorite coffee shop in D.C.! So much so that my friend and I have made a tradition of going here after our Saturday morning workouts. Pros: coffee is always great! I also love that they have certain things "on tap" (same as for beer, just for coffee). The black and white latte where they mix coffee with their latte on tap is awesome. We also loveeee the vegan carrot cake and the powdered sugar/almond croissant. The croissant is my favorite and always a great treat. Cons: they don't offer wifi (but I've found that most coffee shops in D.C. dont) so if you want to do work there you need a hot spot. The foam was wonderful and very pretty, good drink if you want something filling. I'm a black coffee gal girl and anything with milk is pretty much a snack or breakfast. The inside is very spacious and cavernous. My preference is cozy, but it's still a nice hangout and will keep you awake if you need to work.
