Best Mexican food south of Chicago in my honest opinion. Great service as well. The entire menu is good. Awesome Taco's and Fajitas!

I want to start by saying this experience had absolutely nothing to do with our server Jarel . He…read morewas kind, apologetic, and truly the only positive part of the evening. Unfortunately, the way the rest of the service was handled made it nearly impossible for him to give us a good experience. This was actually the second time I've experienced the same issue here. The first time, the manager handled it well and even sent over drinks, which is why we decided to come back. We came for my birthday dinner, and after being seated we waited about 20 minutes with no greeting or service because the host never informed our server we were his table. Later, the host awkwardly dropped a "birthday menu" on the table after we had already ordered. The biggest issue was the timing of the food. Our entrees were brought out before our appetizers, and when we explained the mistake the food runner responded rudely instead of simply correcting it. While we were still eating our appetizers, they repeatedly tried to rush our entrees out even though we had barely started. At that point I spoke with the manager and explained that this exact issue had happened before and that it was making the experience feel rushed. She seemed very disengaged and didn't really offer a solution. Ironically, she later brought drinks to the table even though I had just explained that I was driving and didn't want any. What was most confusing is that the restaurant was very slow that evening, which made the constant rushing and multiple service mistakes even harder to understand. Our server remained apologetic and professional throughout, but unfortunately the overall experience and management response were extremely disappointing. Given that this is now the second time experiencing the same issues, I will not be returning. TERRIBLE

First visit to Hacienda Calavera: Overall a fantastic experience! Must try!…read more Rating scale is up to 5 stars: Food: 5 Service: 5 Ambiance: 5 Price: Very Reasonable Noise Level: Loud / Nightclub Vibes What we ate: -Steak Empanadas $16 - really good. Nice creamy sauce inside and great mildly spicy dipping sauce on the side. -Carne Asada $35- seasoned well and tender. Salsa verde was the best I ever had. -Lobster Tail Alla Parilla $65 - HUGE! Delicious! A mildly spicy butter sauce on top. Yum! What we drank: -water (they offer only bottled- still or sparkling - no tap apparently) -lemonade - very good. Not too sweet. Decor: so adorable and pretty. Each table had a single tall candle for a nice ambiance. Seems like the place to be on weekends. Server: Eduardo - very helpful and attentive. Negatives: music was a bit too loud (we were near a big table level speaker) and utensils were cheap.

Rubi Agave was recommended to us by family. As someone who recently moved down to the area from…read morecloser to the city, it's been a struggle to find a place like this! The service was quick and attentive, and although the place was busy we didn't have to wait on a Friday night. We were fairly unfamiliar with the menu options but came with a big appetite, our waiter recommended the empanadas for an appetizer and they were great! Perfectly fried and super crispy, and you could tell the oil they were using was clean which is always a great sign for the rest of the experience for me. The decorations were SUPER cool. They went over the top for the holidays. Even if it's almost February... Both my lady and I ordered margaritas, and they were the best we've had since we moved down. They were STRONG, but not overly so. 1 was enough, 2nd was for fun. As we were leaving the table next to us ordered a pour of tequila and they did it tableside. I had the Colombian flank steak plate. While I can say I came with a big appetite and I can eat, this was about the first time I can say I left a restaurant still hungry. I knew what I was getting into since the menu did state the size of the steak, and I guess it's not a huge minus I left wanting more! The margaritas probably played a part too. The plate was phenomenal. I ordered the steak medium rare, but it was a little on the rare side which I don't mind at all. Everything molded perfectly and no flavor overpowered the other. One of the tastiest meals I've had in a long time. The only thing holding back this place from a 5 is the portions and prices. $4 for two shrimp seemed insane, and adding options to the margaritas makes each one almost $16. It certainly doesn't deserve the low 3 star rating on this app. Can't wait to come back!

They did accommodate us with two separate checks. Wine was good. Margarita de Casa was great. Plenty of salt on the rim, just I like. Maybe a little too much ice or it was so good that I sucked it down quickly. Chips and salsa was offered with one, two, or three types of salsa. The cost of the salsa depended on how many different you order. They ranged from mild to hot. The 1/2 pound of Carnitas was enough for two to share. Since I wasn't sharing, I had plenty for leftovers. The carnitas had a little too much fat for me. It was difficult to see the fat due to the lighting. The LED lighting above the table flickered. The hostess pointed it out and said she would take care of it. She didn't remedy it even after I reminded her. The shrimp tacos were good but they were not evenly portioned with ingredients across the three tacos. Restaurant was cozy and dark. It set a nice mood.

Dress up or dress down, you'll fit right in here. This is a pricier establishment, however, it's not as pricey as Chicago. Service throughout was perfect. Our server checked in just the right amount of times and food was timed out well. I had the enchiladas verdes which also came with rice and scrambled eggs. This was DELICIOUS. Everything went well together and the portion was enough for me to finish and keep me satisfied.

We went full tapas mode and shared everything across the table, which is absolutely the right way to do this. The trio of salsas was a strong opener. The smoky Al Morita was the clear winner for me, though all three brought something distinct to the table. The Patatas Bravas were well seasoned and the sunny side egg on top added a richness that elevated the whole dish. Wanted a little more crisp on the potatoes but honestly a minor note on an otherwise solid plate. Tacos were a mixed bag. The Al Carnitas fell flat, the pork belly felt underseasoned and the lime overpowered everything else. The Al Fundido though was a genuine standout. Perfectly cooked butterfly shrimp, pickled onions, melty cheese. Every component earning its place on the tortilla. The Al Chulo got solid marks from the table but could use something bright to cut through the richness. The Chicken Empanadas were a highlight of the night. Shatteringly crispy, loaded with flavor, and the slaw alongside them was exactly the right call. The Al Mango Salad was fresh and balanced but leaned sweet and desperately wanted a crunchy element and maybe a little heat to round it out. Dessert delivered a split decision. The Al Platanito Frito was the surprise of the evening. Sweet, sour, bright, crunchy. A perfect final bite. The churros were perfectly fine and nothing more. Service was attentive and our server steered us well with recommendations. One heads up: this is not a casual weeknight cheap eat. It is tapas priced for the experience, so come hungry, come with a group, and come ready to spend. Worth it. The Plainfield location is next on our list and we cannot wait.
