My husband and I just left this restaurant after quickly finding it through Google when searching for Puerto Rican food. We were looking for something fast and casual, and this spot came up. As soon as we walked in, I loved the decor -- the Puerto Rican flags and beautiful paintings really gave it an authentic and welcoming feel. We ordered two different types of alcapurrias and one order of bacalaitos. For drinks, I had the Puerto Rican rum punch and my husband had the pineapple bomb. The alcapurrias were really tasty and fried to perfection -- crispy on the outside and flavorful inside. The only thing missing was a dipping sauce, which I think would have made them even better. The bacalaitos, unfortunately, were a bit too oily and salty for our taste. On the bright side, the drinks were really good and well made. I also really enjoyed the music playlist. This is a Puerto Rican restaurant and bar in the Bronx. The food was okay though I've had better. You can get a plate of meat with your choice of side - rice and kidney beans or gandules, tostones, french fries, maduros, etc. The plates of food are mostly around $16-$20. I recommend the chuletas or the bistec encebollado (steak and onions), which were both very flavorful. I had better quality Puerto Rican food in small, humble restaurants at lower prices but the food here is still decent. Small spot in the Bronx with good food and great people. Service can be a bit hectic cause the place sometimes gets packed, but the food is delicious and the drinks are also good. The spot has a long bar and plenty of seating, clean and tidy with usually just two on the wait staff, one of which would be the bartender. But you won't have to wait too long. I found this quaint little restaurant after spending an entire day at the NYBG. We had the luck of finding a metered parking spot right in front of the establishment. We were greeted upon entry and the usual covid-19 protocols were done before we were seated. They nicely spaced out each dining table with a six foot empty table that was labeled "not for use". We felt completely comfortable eating indoors. The food was amazing! I ordered alcapurrias with beef & shrimp. They were probably the best I've had in 20 years. I also ordered a shrimp pastellio which I really enjoyed. The flavors were delicious and it was made fresh. I ordered the sorullitos and I have to say that they weren't as good as my grandmothers but they sure came close! They lasted a whole 3 min on that plate, only because they were piping hot. For my main course I had the chiccharon de pollo with a side of tostones. I also ordered some yellow rice & red beans for the table. Everything was exceptional. The food was fried but it wasn't greasy. I felt like I was visiting a neighbor and they served me a plate of homemade food created with love. Needless to say that after the apps and dinner I was too stuffed for dessert. But I will definitely come back to try the flan..I saw a little girl really enjoying it and I'm dying to know if it's as good as my abuelas. My Wife and I have visited this restaurant several times over the past five years! We have never been disappointed! The food is Very Good and the Portions are Generous! Pricing is just right ($12 - $36) depending on your order; BUT, no matter what you order, you're in for a treat! The one and only reason I didn't give it a Five Star Rating was because Parking, depending on the time of day, and Cocina Boriqua opens at 4pm, can be a bit challenging at times! LOVED this place! I wish I lived closer to this restaurant because I would come all the time. Prices are fair and their food is amazing. Everything had so much flavor, I could have eaten the white rice alone it was that good! We were a table of five and we were accommodated really fast considering it was a saturday night. The vibe is very chill, you can come dressed up for a date or relaxed for just a nice meal out. The music was true to Puerto Rican culture as well. They don't allow dancing u unfortunately because of the size of the restaurant but I had fun just dancing in my seat. Our order came out pretty fast although we all had pretty big meals. I had the bistec encebollado with white rice and beans. The portion size was just right for me and the flavor was alllll there. The onions were cooked perfectly and the steak was tender. My boyfriend had the chicharrón de pollo with french fries and he also loved his dish! Together we ordered the tostones. The garlic sauce that comes along side the tostones was incredible. I wanted to put it on everything. As for drinks, I had the coconut mojito and it was great as well. It wasn't too sweet and all the flavors complimented each other. We meet up but the food was not at all what I expected. -the Alcapurria was super greasy, literally drench of oil. -the Bacalaitos was a fried batter of very little codfish, again mostly grease. Food was on point! Almost as good as abuela used to make!! So good I came back the next day! There are a lot of Spanish options in the area but nothing comes close. Puerto Rican punch was on point. Very good and strong. With the exception of the chicken empanadas which were a little dry, they were very good. Especially the guava and cheese. Main course I had the churasco and mofongo. Mofongo was moist and the churasco was full of flavor and the chimichurri sauce was out of this world. Came here for a friends bday (twice same location). Seating can be an issue here but they try their best to accommodate you. Service is slow, very slow and not so interactive as with many other places. The food however, let me just say it was amazing. We all ordered different plates of food and all were delicious. Each plate gave a great portion of food and the costs of each plate was pretty decent. They do have a DJ who played the music too loud, which resulted in the "huh, can you repeat that" too many times. They have a dj but dancing not allowed. I get it, but atleast lower the volume so folks can converse. It sucks when the waitress has to be several inches from your in order to hear your order. I would come again though. Our main entrees were arroz con pollo, ropa vieja, pork mofongo, and the salmon entree and everything was so tasty. The arroz con pollo could probably feed four people because the portion was so big. If you go, you must have the flan and tres leches cake for dessert. Just thinking about the cake makes me want another piece right now. The drinks were also on point. Even though the bartender was taking orders and making drinks by herself, the service was never lacking and she made sure we had everything we needed. Upon entering the restaurant I noticed a sign that said groupons will not be accepted without an advanced reservation, which I had no idea about. Stepped into this place on a last minute decisions and the first thing that grab my attention was the karaoke and the vibe was amazing. The entire place felt like I was visiting Puerto Rico for sure and the food was also great, the bar drinks were strong and tasty as well. They wanted to give us a prix fix menu at first but allowed us to openly order from the menu, the taxing alternative for the kitchen. La Cocina Boricua is an authentic Puerto Rican restaurant hidden away by the Castle Hill section of the Bronx. This past Saturday I met a friend there for dinner and drinks since she had purchased a Groupon for La Cocina Boricua. I took a cab there all the way from Inwood and the driver wasn't all too familiar with how to get to the restaurant. From the outside, the place is a bit small so you really have to look for it. If you're using public transportation, it is conveniently located down the block from the 6 train Castle Hill stop and you can use your trusty Yelp app to find it. Once inside the establishment, there is the hostess' stand and an open space with a bar. However, there is a divider that leads to the dining area that is dimly lit with a beautiful decor. I felt as though I was whisked away from the Bronx just by walking inside. My friend was already seated so I joined her. Our waitress came over and asked us if we wanted any drinks. Please keep in mind - they do NOT have a drinks menu. I would recommend asking the waiter or waitress what they offer. After suggesting some fruity drink choices, I went with a glass of sangria that was on the strong side (always a plus). The waitress was very attentive to us even when the place started getting packed, which I absolutely loved. For appetizer, we shared a plate of the tostones rellenos with shrimp, which is basically a fried green plantain in a bowl-like shape filled with either chicken, beef, or shrimp. For entree, I ordered the camarones al ajillo (shrimp in garlic sauce) and a side of mashed potatoes. They offer a couple of choices for sides such as rice and beans (red or black), salad, mashed potatoes, and yuca. I was in a very seafood and starch mode that day, especially after a couple of glasses of wine. My friend ordered the bistec relleno de maduro, which is meat stuffed with ripe yellow plantains, with white rice and red beans. I did have a bit of the bistec and it was so good. I thought the combination would've tasted a bit weird, but I am so glad I was wrong. I came here with my family for my father's birthday. We are a Puerto Rican family and I wanted us to embrace our culture. So we came here from Long Island, to try the Puerto Rican cuisine. It was a great experience. I loved the Puerto Rican decor of the restaurant and the ambience. Parking was easy on a Sunday and the prices were good. My father ordered the Sunday brunch special which was $30 and included 3 courses. It also included unlimited sangria or mimosas! I ordered El Morro which was very tasty.
