There was so much here to choose from and I thought I'd found the holy grail but then I fumbled the ball. Let me try to explain. If you find yourself near this restaurant at the Miami airport, I would stop here especially if you want that last bite of Cuban flavor before you leave. Everywhere your eye could see there were chafing dishes of foods in a cafeteria style setting that looked absolutely delicious. The problem is, the restaurant is very particular and strict about what sides go with what proteins. My experience here came up lacking because from all there was to choose, I came away with the blandest plate of food possible. Let me elaborate further, I picked some chicken breast. Looked good but the rice I wanted they said no. You choose either this or that. It's a pricing tier system. Had I picked the steak, I could have gotten the rice I wanted but I didn't. So I walked away with chicken breast, plain white rice and mashed potatoes. I regretted every bit of that on my plane ride home. But I love Miami and I'll be back. Not sure about La Carreta Cafe. I flew overnight to Miami and grabbed something to eat on my next flight. I did wait about an hour after ordering to eat the sandwich, but I was underwhelmed. The bread was hard to bite- I really had to pull hard to cut through the bread. The cheese was nothing special-just average American sliced orange melted cheese. I wasn't too hungry so I opted for just the cuban sandwhich because im not sure what a good one consisted of. The cuban sandwhich i had here was decent. But they were able to get my order in and it was all great! I even stopped by at the location near American Airlines on my way out from Miami. But had time while waiting for the connecting flight, so got in line. It was earlier in the morning, so I wasn't sure if I could get a good Cuban sandwich. Well, I was able to and glad I did! Stopped at this place on a layover. I liked the idea of a cafeteria style meal. Everyone was nice and the food was ok. Of course you pay airport prices. I just dont think it's very user friendly. There was nothing indicating the price of any dish or how the whole system worked. For example they have pictures of the dishes but because it's a cafeteria style we didn't know how we would be charged if we decided to mix and match between the different dishes they had pictures of. Arrived very hungry on an early morning stop in Miami. Some places hadn't opened but judging by the line and the number of people inside the actual restaurant, seemed this would be a good place to grab a bite. I love the food in Miami and was happy to see Cuban food in the terminal. Based on the reviews, I tried 2 empanadas - beef and chicken. My fav was the beef, the chicken was really cheesy, almost too cheesy for me believe it or not. And that's assuming I got the right one because it looked liked ham. I visited this restaurant during a layover because it was close to my gate & there were a lot of people dining here. It also had good reviews on yelp. There is a large dining area with tables and booths inside of the restaurant. Trays and silverware can be obtained near the entrance prior to choosing your food. Desserts and salads are also on display near the front of the business. The food is displayed in dishes behind a glass. There is a large variety of meats and sides for you to choose from. Your meal is plated by the servers right away so you don't have to wait for your meal to be cooked. I liked the fact that the dishes are labeled for easy identification. After I got my food an employee walked my tray over to the cashier so that I could pay. My tray was then taken to an empty table by a server. She observed that I did not order a drink so she brought me over a cup of ice water and napkins. I got the roasted chicken, rice and beans and fries. The food was reasonably priced for the location and the portion sizes that I received. Unfortunately the chicken was over cooked, dry, and did not taste like it was seasoned. The rice had good flavor and was tasty but the fries tasted like they had been sitting out for a while and were not hot. It is cafeteria style, large variety of choices. Portions were huge, ordered the pulled park, yucca and rice. Yucca was cooked perfectly. Everything was delicious and very reasonably priced, especially for an airport. Employees were very friendly. Great place to get a hot meal quickly.
