Risotto was al dente and pretty good. We got 2 portions but when serving, we saw them save a portion for a table that didnt order any risotto. Outstanding food for reasonable prices. Reservations are required and this place fills up fast. Tables open on the first of the month for the following month only. I snagged a bar seat, which if my preference when I am a solo diner. You are right in the middle of the action and it never feels lonely. The menu changes daily based on what is at the market. I was there in the summer and asked the staff for a recommendation (something I always do when I eat alone). They pointed me toward a salad I would not have ordered on my own. It was a mix of arugula-style greens with beet and watermelon that hit sweet, savory, and salty all at once. The chicken with fresh peaches was equally great. Everything tasted like it belonged together on the plate. Then the panna cotta. This was the grand finale. Easily the best I have ever had. Smooth and creamy with that texture that is just barely set, still a little loose. It came with what I believe was a grape must sauce and I am still thinking about it.

Everyone was Italian and dressed impeccably in perfect fitting suits and each person had a glass of wine with their lunch on the table. There were no other tourists there (except for me). I ordered two first courses (which the waiter double checked and said, "Sorry, excuse me. So you want TWO first courses?" I said "YES!") and got a crispy saffron risotto and spaghetti with uni and black garlic. JUST AMAZING! I will never be able to eat risotto in NYC (where I'm from) ever again.

The restaurant is on a side street near the busy (with tourists from every corner of the globe) Duomo area. It is easy to find. It has a charming decor (though it is a bit darker and more romantically appointed than other area restaurants, as well as having an underground and almost bordello vibe). It is also larger than it might appear, as there are both ground floor, as well as a lower eating area seemingly for larger groups, as well as used during busier times. We have only eaten on the ground floor level. The menu offers ample variety, but is not what one would term extensive. It tends upscale, though not extremely costly (arguably average to slightly above average fine restaurant prices), but portions are on the smaller side. They have a specialty in dishes augmented and emphasizing the use of truffles, of which we have sampled several times. Over the course of our several meals we've had every pasta and risotto offered with truffle shavings. Of the appetizers we can recommend the meatballs, which are delicate and small, the bacon wrapped shrimp, and the octopus. Their desserts are also not the run of the mill and warrant tastings. All and all, we will always repeat here when in Milan. Frankly, though their Yelp average score is pretty good, we were surprised they do not have a higher Yelp average score.

You can study restaurant reviews all you want, but sometimes you just have the good fortune to wander into a wonderful restaurant. And that was exactly our experiences at Al Mercante. We ate on the beautiful terrace which faces the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana art museum. The small piazza where Al Mercante is located was very quiet at night. The interior of Al Mercante is quite elegant. While the majority of the clientele were foreigners, there was small wedding party a couple of tables over. We had the very good fortune to be waited on by Angelo, a professional waiter who loves his job (23 years at Al Mercante!) and who ensured that we had a fine dining experience. Angelo speaks beautiful Spanish and we were able to have a more complete discussion than usual about the menu. I've managed to forget the details of the wonderful food we ate so I hope I. don't commit any serious omissions as I reconstruct our meal. We had an appetizer which I cannot recall. I think it was some sort of raw fish (crudo sounds better) with just a hint of citrus almost like an Italian version of ceviche. Our primo (shared) was wonderful: porcini mushrooms on roasted potatoes. What great taste from two simple ingredients. The secondo (also shared) was salmon coated in sliced almonds and a wonderful lemony sauce. Quite simply it was perfect. We had a terrific white wine that might have been a vermentino. Angelo didn't have biscotti with vino santo so he suggested sbrisolona -- another kind of dessert biscuit. -- that seemed to be homemade -- and a digestivo. In between all of this were wonderful amuse bouche. Here's what I'd like you to know: this was a wonderful, elegant meal served by a very professional waiter in beautiful surroundings. Al Mercante provided a delightful meal on our last evening in Milan.
