My SO and I were sitting next to a man on the plane from Zurich to Rome, and he told us that the one thing that we HAD to do in Florence is to get steak fiorentina. Alright, doable, but he didn't have any recommendations on where to get it. That's fine. Thankfully, there was one right next to our Airbnb, and it seemed to get good reviews. The florentine steak here was excellent. Being a party of three, we decided to order a mushroom tagliatelle dish and florentine steak for two. The florentine steak was absolutely massive, and we ended up taking a lot of it back to the Airbnb with us (which was great in the morning for breakfast). It was really well done, and I was surprised at how delicious and flavorful the steak was with just minimal seasoning. The housemade pasta was also excellent. read more

It would be good place to have dinner in Florence. It's easy to find and need make reservations ahead. If walk-in , just wait a short time to be seated. The food was great. This place was recommended by the hotel staff and being just down the block we tried it for lunch. Awesome food, excellent service and a great atmosphere. It was a nice day so we sat outside and were not disappointed. We ordered a tossed salad with the number one pizza, containing the local Tuscany wild boar ham and the combination of cheeses. We thought it was one of the best pizzas in our lives. They also had the local brewed unfiltered 8% beer called La Magnifiche Petrognola from La Rossa Forte which really pushed the meal into one of the top lunches in my life. For a local ristorante they really know how to do it right. The olive oil and other salad and bread dressings were fresh and the bread just the perfect consistency and flavor. A little pricey, so we wouldn't eat there everyday, but for the best possible lunch, local flavor, after traveling, it was an excellent choice and even gave the hotel an extra boost for suggesting it. We did not Yelp this place before trying it, but the staff was right. It's a great little place and well recommended. We will return when again in Florence. read more

As the first restaurant I visited in Italy, I very much enjoyed it! It was conveniently located, only a 2 minute walk from our hotel, and was charming and cozy. Our waiter, Antonio, was an absolute joy! Prices were reasonable, and my pizza was very good. The tirimisu, however, was AMAZING! It tasted like it had been blessed by angels! This place was recommended by the concierge at our hotel, which is not always necessarily a good thing. But this was definitely not a tourist trap. La Bussola is a favorite spot among the locals that has been in business since the 1960s (check out the diner-type stools at the counter and the black-and-white pictures on the wall of how the place looked when it first opened). We had a fabulous dinner here. La Bussola is known for its wood-fired pizzas, which are scrumptious, but we also enjoyed the pasta dishes (such as homemade noodles with salmon in a creamy sauce). They also had an excellent wine list, good local beer selections, and an exemplary wait staff. The only off note was the tomatoes in the salad, which were curiously hard like the kind you buy in the grocery store. How can that happen in Tuscany? But no matter. I was disappointed. This was one of very few times Yelp led me astray. I should have read a few negative reviews more closely. The service is absolutely abysmal. Maybe it's because I'm a tourist? You're in a heavily traveled tourist area, so I hope not. Absolutely terrible service though. Average, not great, wine by the glass selection. All at a higher price than what I found elsewhere throughout Florence. I wanted a Brunnella but knew I could get a much better price (and service) at a few other places I'd been. The Pinot Nero was interesting though. Pizza (Tuscan #1) was fine but nothing better than I'd had elsewhere, and at inflated pricing. Risotto was average. We have better at home. Gnocchi was fine but not special. Maybe you'll fare better. I'd avoid for the bad service alone. read more

We're in Florence for our honeymoon and after 14+ hours of traveling, we were soooo hungry!! This was our first stop and we were so excited to have our first Italian meal. We asked to sit outside and the tables next to us were so close, it was a little claustrophobic. We could hear either the awkward conversation at the table to our left, or the awkward silence to the table at our right. My husband ordered the No. 3 pizza and it was amazinggggg! I had the tagliatelle bolognese which looked better than it tasted. The pasta was actually a little dry and bland. I think I could make this better at home. What was entertaining was that since the outside patio is practically in the parking lot, we witnessed a car accident in the parking lot. The guys were arguing in Italian and all I could make out was that the guy who hit the parked car kept saying that his God made him do it and that his God was everyone's God and that all should be okay. I visited Florence for a week in October to visit my son and his wife who live in France. While walking we happened upon Bussola and decided to eat outside since we had their dog with us. From start to finish everything was wonderful. So wonderful we ate there two more times, ending with the famous Florentine steak. We also had the carbonara which was absolutely delicious. Desserts were great too. Service is impeccable. The house Bussola wine is a good buy and tasted lovely. The waiters remembered us on night two and came and chatted in English with us. On night three is was like a reunion. Can't say enough about this place. Make time for a meal. You won't regret it. read more

More and more reasons on why I'm fond of Yelp. I had a few hours of free time in Firenze and after doing a bit of shopping, I wanted a place to chow down and use wifi. The original restaurant that I picked had a half wait which would not work for me. Luckily I found La Bussola. I was welcomed and given a seat by the bar where I could watch the pizza being made and fired into the wood oven. Of course, I had to order pizza and it was just as delicious as it looks in the photo. Yum! Great crust, melting cheese... It was a great meal! I did spent almost 2 hours here catching up on social media and messaging my loved ones. The wifi was fast and reliable and the meal was delish. If pizza isn't your thing, they have other items on the menu from pasta, salad, to good vino and espresso. But you can't go wrong with pizza! read more

You haven't had pizza until you've eaten here! We stopped by for lunch, not knowing that we were in for a big treat! I ordered the Quattro Formaggi or 4 cheese pizza, which included two kinds of pecorino cheese, mozzarella and Gorgonzola. My husband ordered the pizza with boar sausage, ham, Salame and Mozzarella. They were both out of this world! I can't believe I ate the whole thing! Got back from a tour late and wanted a restaurant near our hotel, went to La Bussola based on the reviews. Had to wait a little longer than we had hoped (about 10 mins past our reservation) and I was getting quite nervous that we made a bad decision (and did not want to have a bad meal in Florence). We were seated and things took a turn for the better. Waiter really seemed to liven up when we ordered a nice bottle of wine, he seemed impressed and I guess realized we were not just ordering 4 pizzas (I'd be a little worried if that is what you are planning). Started by sharing the pasta carbonara with my wife. First time I had the dish so keep that in mind when I say it was fantastic. The pancetta was plentiful and all the flavors came together well. The highlight was the steak Florentine for two (which I almost was going to order just for myself but convinced my son to take some). Cooked perfectly, fillet was medium rare, sirloin section rare. Good crust, the quality of the meat was fantastic. I could see this being served at Peter Luger or Wolfgang's in NY without any complaints. Definitely the better of the two steak Florentines I had this week. And, yes, the wine was perfect. read more

I studied abroad in Florence and had heard about La Bussola from several friends. They said it was the best pizza in Florence and they were right. My friends and I dined here almost once a week for an entire semester. The first time we went we didn't expect such a line at 8:30pm but it was packed. A little disheartened, we said we would just wait for the next table. The waiters were so kind they gave us each a complimentary glass of Prosecco for waiting! They seated us only after waiting 10 minutes. WE each ordered a small house salad, pizza, and wine. The pizza is made right in front of you. You can actually see them roll out the dough and cut fresh cheese. Its delicious. The best part of the food is the balsamic vinegar on the tables though. It is so rich and flavorful. You can really tell it is authentic. Even the chili oil they make is incredible!! As if the great service and food wasn't enough, the waiters proceeded to give us free Limoncello and green apple liquor shots. We even took them with the wait staff to celebrate our study abroad. 1000% recommend and wish I could still eat here 5 nights a week. read more

Wow wow wow! Our meal, the wine, the experience with Michael our waiter was incredible. Everything was devine and well worth the money. Take his recccomendations on your wine pairing and you will not go wrong. We have ate many places throughout Europe on our trip but haven't had the wait staff actually pay attention to our water, clearing the plates, and attentive to our wants. Probably our 5th visit to this gem of a restaurant. Always great! The decor is unique; the classy art-deco long bar with cantilevered stools and accent lighting is the focal point of the L-shaped dining area. We always start with crostini Toscana, even if it's not on the menu. Antonio brought us 3 pieces of toast spread with the creamiest, richest pate I've ever had, cut in half and garnished with chopped radicchio. I wanted perfectly simple pasta. Antonio suggested spaghetti carbonara; it came portioned for two, al dente with tender slivers of pancetta and rich egg. The veal scallopini w/Marsala sauce came with fried potatoes and some tiny tomatoes. The varieties of Italian tomatoes seem endless; all are equal or better than the best US homegrown. Far superior to varieties grown for shipping and packaging concerns, which are tasteless and nearly inedible. I knew how tender the veal would be before I took a bite by watching our server divide the portion for two at table. He cut the veal with a tablespoon! It was also full of flavor. We always get a simple salad of quartered tomatoes simply dressed with oil and a bit of basilico. A half-bottle of La Bussola's excellent house red completed our dining adventure; there was nothing left but to trundle home in a near food-coma across Piazza Della Republica and home to bed. read more

What a wonderful experience we had here! Came with a large group during our last week in Florence, and somehow we didn't have to wait for a table at all. The waitstaff were friendlier than average (oh Italian service, I tell ya), and the food was wonderful. I ordered a classic Margherita pizza and we split a few bottles of the house white wine. I heard that food in Florence was really good and to me this meant that I could stumble into any restaurant and be blown away. That wasn't my experience in general, but this place was worth the reservation we made (via Yelp) and braving the hot weather in Florence in July. We sat overlooking the patio and benefited from some A/C. I had the steak and Latisha had some lasagna and these were pretty good, along with the salad we shared. The wine list was good and we were happy with our Chianti. The real treat was the tiramisu sampler. Oh my gosh. I think of Tiramisu as a short of bland dish with a bitter coffee flavor that every Italian restaurant in the U.S. is required to have. "What you don't have spaghetti? What, you don't have tiramisu?" But this stuff was hands down the best dessert we had on our entire tour of Italy and France. It is not to be missed. The service was good for Italy - I feel like when they don't work for tips, they aren't as ass-kissy as we're used to and so it isn't worth their while to bridge the language gap. Here though they didn't make me feel such an outsider. I would say 4.5 stars if that were an option, but in the end, they earn the final half on the rounding. read more

It's probably the worst lobster linguine I've ever eaten. I feel very very disappointed about this restaurant. The entire dish is salty, both lobster and linguine. I cannot taste anything except salt. I don't understand how come lobster can be bad tasting but I experienced it first time in this restaurant. This is probably the best restaurant I ate at on my entire Italy trip. WOW everything was truly amazing, from appetizers to dessert, and it was a GREAT price for everything we ordered. The food was so delicious; it tasted like great quality food and the flavors were so delicious. We ordered the prosciutto and mozzarella cheese starter and it was amazing. I felt like I was really getting a taste of Tuscany and fresh Italian food. For entrees, we got the seafood spaghetti, pasta with meat sauce, and the Tuscany pizza #3. Definitely, hands down the highlight was the Tuscany pizza #3. INCREDIBLE. I am not a huge fan of pizza but this one is by far the best pizza I have had in my entire life. The cheese was so fragrant and delicious and the meats were so flavorful; it was like nothing I have ever had in the United States. The crust and everything was just perfect. If you like seafood, the seafood spaghetti was a great lighter option: it was very flavorful and not too creamy or rich. Really really great as well. For dessert, we got the tiramisu and this was also a HUGE HIT! It was the perfect, most beautiful blend of cream and cake and coffee and everything.
