Looks like an environment that supplies the niche audience what it needs. Not only did I find equipment, but functional house items as well. Wide shoe section that I wasn't expecting. Clothing for everyone in your family. I believe there was an education section, which is valuable to beginners and or people who want to brush up their skills. Customer service was absent. Saw associates free and looking my way but no one approached me at all. I don't know if I'll be back, not something I want to experience again. read more

After purchasing some clothing, I asked about the return policy as I have heard it was very liberal. "1 year return policy, 100% satisfaction". I asked if 9 months from now I'm not happy with how the clothing fits, possibly due to weight loss or general fit? I was told weight loss is not covered, that if the clothing was frayed, or defective that would be ok, but not fit due to weight. This is from their website as not allowed: "Products returned for personal reasons unrelated to product performance or satisfaction." If the products don't fit me anymore ,(weight loss in my example), that is entirely linked with my level of satisfaction. Too many conditions of the return policy and restrictive interpretations of it make this my reason for 1 star. If you are looking to shop somewhere where the return policy is honored, L.L. Bean is not recommended. read more

First time here. Everything is mostly full on retail. There were some sales racks but no deep discounts. A shirt was still $39.99. I walked around the store and checked out all departments. I wanted to buy something. I kept circling back to these tiny pillows stuffed with spruce pine needles. They were $8.95. I passed. They had a cool fat tire bicycle in there for $799. I found some socks for $11 that looked comfy. Service was good. Their clothes similar to Land's End so quality looks good. Bring on the sales already. I did pick up a catalog on the way out of the store. Maybe the good deals are online? read more

In the pursuit of planning a hiking trip, I've been on the lookout for good hiking gear. I've done quite a bit of hikes in California, but I'd still consider myself a novice when it comes to hiking and outdoor activities in general. Because of this, I don't have high standards or much experience when it comes to knowing what I need or what features are best when it comes to specific products. I visited this store just this past week and I was astounded by how amazing the staff were. They were extremely friendly, approachable, and so, so knowledgeable on essentially everything I wanted to know about when it comes to hiking. I really appreciated that their staff are well-equipped and truly understand the specialties of each of their products. I was looking for shoes in particular. They have a clearance rack & there are some pretty affordable things on that rack. They even had a bag of different wool socks, allowing me to try on various hiking shoes with the socks I would actually be wearing on the trip to give me a good feel of the shoes. Their return policy is awesome - all returns guaranteed, 100% satisfaction, even if you have taken the tags off and used the products a few times and was unhappy with it, they will return it with a full refund. Overall, I am very happy with my experience at this store. Everyone was so friendly and it's just a very well-rounded place to visit if you're looking for some gear for an upcoming trip. read more

Based on a few trips to The Bean I'm amazed at how few patrons are browsing, or perhaps I'm just not visiting in the prime hours. The biggest competitors for L.L. Bean would be REI, Eddy Bauer and Cabela's. The prices seem in line with the other stores and about the same quality depending on the article. I found a shirt I wanted which was marked down drastically from a week ago, but oddly only one on the rack (which was my size) was marked down. I appreciate that employees don't ask questions or stare, other customers may be looking for offered help but I liked to be left alone and I'll ask if I have a question. Another cool feature was help yourself changing rooms. At many other stores now I have to ask a clerk to use the changing room so they can unlock and I suppose keep track of what may be going on in there. Some of the less enthusiastic observations: * As a man there is far less selection for us. The floor is 2/3 women's clothes. * The store layout is awkward with a lot of twists and turns. * There were four check out clerks and five customers. One clerk was not taking business and just kept punching in to the terminal. Two of us waiting while the other three evidently were doing returns and filling out an endless online form asking the customer continuous questions. Then they want to sell the L.L Bean credit card and have to go through that routine. The employees are smiling and friendly behind the check out lane, and there is a roped guideline so you don't have to hear others business, but I still could. The employees on the floor seem harried and stressed, although I'm not sure why as they weren't doing any hard sells, but mainly moving merchandise and arranging tables. read more

Visited this store to exchange my online order for larger sizes. Maybe one or two other customers in the store. I asked for help from one of the sales associates finding the items I was looking for. The associate didn't seem to interested in really helping me and told me to go to the return counter. At the return counter I asked to exchange my items for a larger size and if not in stock if she could order them for me. She told me her computer is slow so she would just return the items and I should just go online and order what I wanted. Drove 40 mile with plans to exchange and pick up additional items. I left with nothing. Never felt like they wanted my business so I went to Cabelas. read more

Stopped in today for short sleeve professional dress shirts. They didn't really carry any in the store. Really? I looked for alternative casual short sleeve shirts and found I had to go all over the store to try to look at alternative styles. Difficult to find merchandise that I was looking for. Seems like I had to traverse every part of the men's dept to make sure I saw their casual short sleeve shirts. One employee was saying "I" have this and "I" have that ..sounded like it was her store. Not the LLBean experience I had at the store in Freeport. I have bought my clothes at LLBeans for two decades via online. I thought a venue in the MOA would be impressive. NOT. I purchased a pair of Keene sandals here 10 months ago because I believed L. L. Bean to be a retailer of high quality goods with excellent customer service. I no longer have such a high opinion. After using the sandals twice, some of the adhesive in the sole failed, and the sole is peeling apart. I have spent multiple phone calls with the central customer service and with store representatives trying to get a replacement or refund. They are not able to locate a record of the transaction and blamed me for not keeping a paper receipt. They are unwilling to accept proof of purchase based on my credit card charge history. For a retailer that built its brand image on quality and customer service, they did not deliver on either. I will be taking my business elsewhere in the future. read more
