I brought my daughter here for a little shopping trip, we looked at clothing then moved on to bikes. Her birthday was coming up and I wanted to get her a strider bike. I had her stand on one to check out some measurements. The bikes weren't put away, they were just stacked by boxes in the corner. My daughter stood on one for a minute--I was standing right by her and giving her my undivided attention. At this moment, an employee (older man, white hair) walked by us and rudely said "no riding in the store." And kept walking. Not "can I help fit you for a bike?" Or "can I help you find the right kind of bike?" Not even a "please". I don't expect everyone to adore my kids, but I do expect people to be respectful to them and them to be respectful to others. REI will never get a single dime from me again. This is the second time I've had an unsavory experience with the same employee. I don't understand how it can be difficult to treat people nicely, I can find much better customer service and better prices at Target. read more

Dog policy is the final straw. We got kicked out by the manager, who chose to enforce the policy today. We've been coming here for years and never been harassed for bringing our dog. What they sell in the store is crap, what they sell to the public is even more so. I'll never shop here ever again. read more

We had a great experience here recently. Wife came in for heavy winter boots. She is a winter neophyte. She knew nothing about boots, hats, gloves, etc. and cold. First we got boots. The guy who helped us had the patience of a saint. After that, my wife asked an incredibly basic question about gloves that showed she had no experience with a Minnesota winter. The guy brought us over to the gloves and spent time with us there as well, helping us figure what we needed. Then, he helped us with warm socks. It was great. The guy helped save us tons of time as well as saved us from freezing our butts off. read more

I go to REI for their gears. Sure some of their staff are friendly and helpful. But can they hire any black, brown, or red employees? OUTDOOR IS FOR COLOR PEOPLE TOO! Dreams are born here. Walking through the isles of gear I feel inspired to begin some great adventure that involves camping, hiking and kayaking. An adventure that would change me forever... Well, I was looking for hiking boots. The man in the shoe department knew where each boot was made and the history behind each company. He even brought out an "exploded" boot that showed the layers and explained how this new material used in many of the boots was waterproof, yet breathable. What technology! He also showed me the correct way to lace or tighten the boots to "lock" my foot in place. Then he had me climb what he called "Mt. Roseville", a big slab of rock, to see how the boot would feel when actually climbing. So here I am climbing up and down, forwards, backwards, sideways....pretending. I must say, this was a fun experience! The staff here loves their job and it shows. I like being a part of REI by being a member of the co-op. Inspiration is contagious. read more

Totally different from Cabela's and Bass Pro in that they cater to the camper/cycler/hiker/kayaker/skiier in all of us vs the fisherman or hunter. Therefore - right up my alley. In addition to top notch brands, their REI brand is a good value and decent quality. For sure - join their rewards program as you get perks like advance sales, free shipping, and a year end rebate. Also - the staff is made up of outdoorsmen that use the equipment and are really knowledgeable...specialists vs generalists that you would find at a Dick's. Even though the prices are a little high, when you are using it you know it will not fail when you are in the woods or on the snow. read more

REI's famous return policy is pretty much BS. On two occasions I bought jackets here where the zippers failed and on both occasions they were no longer carrying the item in current stock so I was SOL. That is a pretty lame loophole if you ask me. I haven't had great luck with their customer service in their Roseville store. Maybe I just come on week-ends when they are busy, but it's always hard to find someone. I personally prefer Midwest Moutaineering because of the service factor. We did buy most of our backpacking stuff here and most of it has held up and been really good for our needs. However, I went in having read a lot of reviews ahead of time and pretty much knew what I wanted. If you haven't done your homework, you might end up with something you don't like out on the trail and that's no good. I'm updating to say that a potentially unpleasant Christmas shopping errand was made bearble by good customer service. They had extra people on for the holidays and they were friendly and helpful. And one lady spent a good deal of time explaining the ins and outs of ski gloves and hand warmers to my mom. Pretty much any retail location that can deal with my mom gets a four star minimum review. read more

The rack department personnel could use better customer service training. After spending 600.00+ on equipment, I have a simple question and don't really need to hear "sorry I can't help you" rather unpleasantly, when all you need to say is "bring it by and we can look at it." Which would have been appropriate. Other than that, the store carries the same stuff you would expect it to. read more

I've been a member of REI for 10+ years (Does that mean I'm biased in my review?). I used to go there for their rock climbing equipment because that was one of the only places in town that sold it. Now I go there for some odd camping or biking gear I may need. Their prices are hit and miss. I will usually shop around because I can, most of the time, find a better price online or at a different outdoors store. I will say however they do have some high quality stuff that is worth buying. read more

I just became a member of REI in the past few months, primarily to get a discount on race entry fees. However, I received their email letting me know what is happening at their stores and found out that they have some free classes for members and other more in-depth classes that members get a discount on. I went to the bike maintenance class last night and took some valuable information from it! This class was for beginners, but provided some tips for the average biker. I look forward to more classes in the near future! read more

Agreed that the Bloomington location is far superior, as far as choices goes, but this locale is fine. I bought some killer shoes a few weeks ago and an LED key-chain light, and had a very helpful girl during the fittings; she was actually juggling 3 customers with the greatest of ease. So kudos to the staff. Also agreed that you should do most of your own research to know basically what you want to buy before showing up, then get some on-site answers for anything you may have missed. The stuff there is or can be insanely expensive so don't buy if you're not 100% clear that it suits your needs; it's easy to get wrapped up in the latest Alpine Lowe vest then end up never wearing it... that's a lot of $$$ to throw away. Otherwise, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend. read more

This is one of the smaller REI's I've been to, but I really dig the staff that works in the boot department. Every time I've gotten a perfectly fitting pair of boots, my feet are extremely thankful for this. The rest of the store is pretty good, the staff is helpful and really knowledgeable, but the selection can be pretty limiting. read more

This is possibly the oddest location for a REI store that I've ever seen. It's tucked back at the end of an industrial looking strip center, next to a furniture store. But don't let that stop you. Inside, it's a REI -- just the same as the rest of them -- with friendly staff and great items. If I had one complaint, I guess it would be that they tend to not carry everything that is offered in larger REI stores or online. This is particularly detremental during the members only garage sale each year since there tends to be a smaller selection of clearance items when compared to other larger stores. But I know that is just because of the amount of space they are working with. For what they have, they do a great job. The staff here is friendly and knowledgeable, and I do still enjoy shopping here. It's just a skip away from the Rosedale Mall, so it's easy to pop by if we are up that way. read more

The store is bigger than it looks from the outside. In the back end of Roseville away from the crowded strip malls this store packs a full supply of outdoor gear. I appreciate the high quality of warm weather clothes and foot ware. The best selection of hiker and winter socks around, beats some nearby sports stores. I haven't had to deal with service too much. There are people who will help if you indicate you need some, however they don't chase after you either which I appreciate. The check is a roped waiting queue like a Bank and they are speedy. Prices are on the steep side but compare quality with others and you'll find apparel made in the USA. I watch for sales and tend to build up points on the membership to apply as a discount when allowed. read more

I really enjoy this REI. I've gone in a few times looking for specific items (Snow pants, water bottles, shoes . . . ) and they have always been very helpful. I remember the first time I went in for a water bottle the man helping me was very knowledgeable - maybe too knowledgeable - on water bottles and had a lot of different information on all the brands they sell. When I was looking for shoes they were very helpful as well, I ended up not purchasing from here because they did not have my size (typically an 11, but needed a 12 in a particular shoe). So that would a snag in their service - they could carry more large sizes in shoes. Overall, the Roseville REI is probably my favorite REI. read more

Unfriendly staff. I know people have bad days, but if you work in customer service you can't take that out on customers. Returned gift bought for me from there for $69 ($20 of it a REI gift card). Refused to give me the $20 back so I couldn't even exchange my gift for the right size. Management tried to claim that it was bought using a 20% off coupon, not with a $20 gift card. I tried to point out 20% of $69 is not $20, but they gave me a receipt and manager left. Not sure how other locations are, but REI customer service will refer you back to the store in question, so stay away from this location. read more

Stopped by here to pick up some last minute supplies for a Boundary Waters trip. The entire staff was great. Especially helpful was Jeff or "Stubbs" who really went above and beyond in explaining electronic navigational tools and sharing his Boundary Waters expertise with a geezer. I love REI. Roseville doesn't have as many options and varieties compared to the Bloomington location but I absolutely love window shopping. I sometimes buy and pick up in Roseville and it has always been a breeze. Sales Associates are pretty nice, informative, and helpful as well. read more

Went once on a busy Saturday and the employees in the skiing section were very rude, I figured it's best to give them the benefit of the doubt and thought maybe they were just stressed because they were busy. Went back on a very slow Friday night and was again treated poorly. Nobody wanted to help me or answer my questions about ski gear. After being a member for the last 3 years my recent experiences have been very disappointing. read more

This place is fantastic! They've got a huge selection of outdoor gear for Backpacking, Biking, Kayaking, Canoing and just general camping. The thing I like most are the people. They've all been on numerous trips and know about the gear they sell. The people there will gladly spend hours with you. In addition, they have an area for testing water pumps and filters, a hood for lighting stoves, a couple "terrain walks" for testing out backpacks and boots, and a rocky surface and carpeted surface for testing out sleeping gear. They sell lots of name brands, as well as their own brand (which is actually quite good). We bought a lot of backpacking gear there in preparation to go to Philmont Scout Ranch. Most employees know about Philmont, and know what gear you need, etc... When we bought our backpacks, the guy in the backpack department literally spent two hours with us, showing us the ins and outs of all the model, helping us adjust it just right, giving us advice on how to pack them, etc.... People in other departments have also done the same for us. Yes, the prices are a little higher than other places, but their definitely cheap, considering all the top-notch service you get. The being said, if you know what you want, and have no reason to look at it, Campmore has better prices and a slightly better selection. read more

I used to forget about this REI, honestly, because it's in such an unlikely place. Next to Schnidermans, really? I had only been here twice before this last time, and the first time was five years prior to buy a backpack (which has still held up like new, by the way). The second time I came in here I received similar customer service to the service I get in Bloomington, usually. I came in, came out, and that was it. This time, however, was different. I had gotten a pair of cross country boots that were a bit too small and caused a large blister on the bottom of my foot. I explained my situation - actually not expecting to be able to return them - and the employee took them back without a box AND gave me new, better ones at the SAME PRICE as the other boots that I got on sale. Wow. That's not all. Upon learning that I had a blister, which he didn't have much experience with, he took me to a girl in the shoe department who recommended exactly what she thought would help heal it so I could get back out there skiing. I wanted to keep looking around, so they even brought it up to the register for me and waited. I definitely didn't expect this kind of service from an REI, but I got it and beyond. read more

I had the absolute worst retail experience I have ever had at REI last week. I decided I really wanted a heart rate monitor watch, so after looking online I decided to stop by REI. I figured they'd have more expertise than Target, plus they were offering a 20% discount for REI members, which my husband happens to be. I found the watch counter, and proceeded to wait for 10 minutes while an REI employee avoided eye contact and chatted on the phone with another customer. She finally looked over and offered to take out a watch for me while continuing to talk on the phone. When she finally got off the phone, I had some questions since I don't know anything about heart rate monitor watches. She also didn't know anything about the watches. So, she left to find another employee who might be able to help me. 15 minutes later and I was still standing there alone. I wandered around the store, saw her talking on the phone to another customer, she clearly forgot about me wating. I found another employee, but when I asked her to help me with the watches she also didn't know anything about them. She told me she'd find someone else. 10 minutes later and I was face-to-face with the first employee who knew nothing about the watches. Moral of the story, REI employees don't know anything about heart rate monitor watches and I wasted 30 minutes trying to talk to someone. In the end, I just went to Target and bought one that was $30 cheaper. read more

I've been a member of rei for nearly 20 years and can't speak highly enough of the service and selection and quality of goods you can obtain from this retailer. where else can you find a place that offers an unconditional lifetime guarantee of the products it sells? The sales staff are knowledgeable and friendly. They are often enthusiasts for the very activities of the department they work in. Gear heads work the bike sections, skiers work the outerwear department, and so on. It lends an air of credibility to their advice I have come to rely on whenever I shop. If you haven't already become a member, join the co-op asap; it's the best 20 bucks you'll ever spend. From discounts to a record of all your purchases so you can return anything that doesn't meet their high standards, regardless of when you bought it, it's a great deal. read more
