What a great little store, packed with outdoor stuff. I came in here with my son looking for a balaclava before we went snowboarding. I remember asking someone and they said just under the canoe, and there were half a dozen hung up on the ceiling. lol. They have a great selection of winter clothes. The clothing errs on the boomer side of things, but the coats, ski/snowboard pants, gloves, hats, etc. are really well represented. The kids section was excellent. We had a variety of balaclavas to choose from. We got what we needed and we were on our way. read more

We have purchased ski equipment and ski gear from Hoigarrd's for many years including all new ski equipment for our almost 14 year old this year. My son was finally able to ski yesterday with my husband after being medically sidelined for a couple weeks. Anyway, they were on the ski lift after their third run when my son/husband noticed my son's skis were chunking apart all along both skis. My son had not crashed. My son is an advanced but cautious skier and with my husband the entire time. They were at Wild Mountain doing first season runs. Nothing wild about it. Anyway, when they returned I took the skis in as clearly there was a product issue. I was greeted by John in the ski department. I was, undoubtably, frustrated as my son had ski plans for today and starts school ski club Friday. John made a rude comment about me being frustrated and how "kids banging their skis together cause that kind of damage" that immediately put me on defense. My husband and son arrived at 10:45am and I had received a text about the skis falling apart by noon. I again repeated that they had only completed three runs and asked how that was possible my son damaged the skis. John continued to blame my son for the damage. Now my husband is a life long skier, I took skiing up as an adult, and if anyone should have damage to skis it should be me. My husband was floored as to cause as he has never seen skis do this. The manager was brought in and agreed to take the skis back, replace them and bind them (thank you) but that is where the only positive customer service ended. John came back to have me sign a release for mounting and kept going on needing to talk to my son about knocking his skis together (because that is what happened in his opinion) and would not let it go, again and again, even after I again stated this was noted after three runs, first season runs, at Wild. I finally asked John if the entire interaction would have been the same had my husband been standing there instead of me. John continued on. The manager stepped in and told John to give it a rest and he still didn't want to stop. I appreciate the quick turn around help from the manager but the front facing customer service was horrific. The team was so knowledgeable, patience, and took the time to talk me through each step. They went the extra mile and even drilled new holes for my bindings in a better position for my new goals (from park girl to just cruising around the hill). My skis turned out amazing! Growing up, my parents would bring us here to outfit us for Skijammers. The large smokestack outside will always be etched in my mind as a Metro area landmark. Now that it's moved to Miracle Mile, I kind of feel like it's an entirely different store. While the new store is aesthetically pleasing, I feel like they have replaced a lot of the gear with clothing--maybe because it's a smaller footprint. Their end of year tent sale, though, is not to be missed if you like the outdoors and need to stock up on gear. A year ago, I got a ski helmet for half off...a damn good deal since they are pricey!! I was in the store yesterday and I was ready to pull the trigger on a new carbon fiber Specialized bike. All of the associates were busy with folks looking at skies, go figure ... It is sixty outside and no snow in sight. But anyway ... there were two bikes that were my size (that is unusual in the current climate ... Let's Go Brandon) but like most of their bikes there was NO PRICE TAG on the bikes that I was considering. I guess one is to just open themselves up to a shark attack! They will just size you up and charge you the most that they possibly can. So anyway ... that is my LAST TRIP to hoigaard's or vail ... as I will not play that game and being they want to play like that ... AVOID! read more

Mixed bag here with Hoigaards. There's an old white man who always ignores us. He appears to be an employee of sorts and always around the store greeting others but me. After Vail bought out this store, I've noticed other older staff ignoring me as well unless I go up to them with questions. The bike and sup board people were always friendly to me though. I have purchased products from here over the course of the last 8 years and 50% of the times my experience has been good. Haven't been back for a year after being blatantly ignored the last time but here are my tips for the store and btw 4 stars because only focusing on the good experiences: Ski snowboard bags go on super sale in the fall tent sale. Buy it then. The latest model helmets and ski/board bindings are also very well priced during this event where you can chat up with reps from various manufacturers/brands and listen to their spiels on why their product is superior. It can be fun listening to marketing speak if you're like me. Check out the final hour on the final day of the tent sale. They sometimes will hand out additional discounts but you'll be dealing with fewer items. For snowboards, their used or previous year boards get heavily discounted in the summer ... duh. If you wait for the tent sale, sometimes if the price is too low and they don't put it out on the floor. Their bike department folks were knowledgeable and honest when I interacted with them. Their ski and snowboard waxing department also does a good job and hats off to them for the timely work. read more

Easily the worst ski shop in Minneapolis. I don't know why I keep coming back here except The House is 40 minute drive. Whether it's not honoring repurchasing youth skis commitments, overpriced shop charges, or lack of qualified boot salespersons, I am always disappointed. read more

I cannot say what a total complete disappointment this store has become since Vail acquired it. The service from individuals in the ski department is still excellent but the pricing (especially the tent sale) is terrible. Im not sure if I'll ever shop here again. read more

100% dissatisfaction with the customer service and the absolute pathetic care for returning clientele and would never recommend it to anyone. I came in knowing exactly what SUP board to buy but with an open mind to other nice options. I called previously to see if they had a specific available and also asked if they price match, they responded "it depends on the situation" "do you price match with "rei and backcountry.com?" "Yeah, it depends." I drove over an hour with full intent to shop local and purchase the one I had called on but when I went and checked out the Cashier mentioned he would not honor the pricing at their competitors. So I simply asked you would rather have me buy elsewhere? So very easily I could support REI or BACKCOUNTY.com in a flash with my instant payment and my to door shopping for less cost? The manager of the store replied "yes" hinting (you may leave) I will take every bit of business elsewhere. Some of their representatives definitely know what they are talking about (I will give them that) but you can find that at many places locally, and not to mention try to stay more completive in the fast pace shopfront vs internet current market! Looks like it's been a few years since their last review so I'm happy to add a new one for them. Everyone at Hoigaards is so NICE! I've been there a few times over the last year and have always left pleased. Last year, I bought myself a new snowboard at REI that was discounted for end of season. I didn't feel like replacing my other gear at the time, so I went to Hoigaards about a week later to see if they could take the bindings from my old board and switch them to my new one. My old gear was from 2003, pretty much ancient with all the improvements made in the skiing/boarding world, so the baseplates on my bindings were actually not compatible with my new board. I was bummed because I wasn't expecting to have to buy new bindings, but the guy helping me (wish I remembered his name) went above and beyond what I would expect, and made several trips down to their stockroom until he found baseplates that would work. This cost nothing, btw! This year hubby and I went in for their end of season sale (most things 30-40% off). He was in the market for a helmet and goggles. I have never worn a helmet but figured if they had one I liked I would get it. I did find a couple, but alas they were pretty picked over from the sale and none in my size. Once again they did a bunch of up and down in the stock room to double check that they really didn't have any. So no helmet for me, but I did end up buying a new pair of bindings since they were 40% off! I came back the next day to get them mounted (I called ahead first to make sure someone who could do that was there), and a wonderful (and cute!) guy named Elijah took care of me. We chatted while he did that and he joked about my old bindings being relics from the 90's, hah. He made sure to keep my stance angles the same and double checked that they were spaced appropriately for my shoulder width. While this was happening, hubby was browsing the jackets and almost bought himself a Spyder jacket that was 40% off, but relented since it was still over $200. They can be pricey but no more than I'd expect out of any sporting goods store, but the end of season sale is really amazing, so if you're looking for new gear, definitely wait for that! read more

While their selection of outdoor stuff is pretty decent I was really disappointed in the people working at Hoigaard's. The man I was asking questions seemed annoyed and like I was bothering him. I smiled and said "Hello" to the man working the bike counter and he only looked at me, with no smile or greeting. But the women who checked out my item was the worst, very crabby and not friendly at all. While it's selection of outdoor gear is good I'll stick with REI and Joe's. read more

I have shopped here going back decades. Now with a family it is my primary store for outdoor gear. We are also Epic Pass holders. In most seasons, the service is exemplary. This year it has been horrible. We purchased skis earlier this Fall despite a selection really offered only one choice. The mounting has taken 6 weeks with two more to go. I get it...we are in COVID. But the real reason is that Vail Mountain Resorts has slashed all support to this important store. The effect has been dramatic: a friendly, helpful staff is now stressed and rude. read more

I was just in Breckenridge, CO for a long weekend. Great weather, great skiing - an overall solid weekend, except for the fact that my skis got stolen the last day we were. BUMMER. After returning to the homeland (MN), I set aside my bitterness and sadness regarding my previous skis and headed to Hoigaard's. What I got was a great deal (almost 70% off skis with free bindings), some sympathy for my departed skis, some solid advice and service, as well as what I hope to be a supremely secure ski lock. Not being a native Minnesotan I never had the opportunity to learn any winter sports growing up as many of my friends had. Nevertheless I committed to learning how to snowboard and finally signed up for lesions at Hyland last season and thoroughly enjoyed it. A friend was nice enough to lend me his old equipment to use while I was first learning how to snowboard so that I wouldn't have to spend too much money on something that I would end up not liking. When the time came to finally purchase my own board I had a few options but Hoigaard's proved to be the best one. It was the end of the season (surprisingly in the beginning of February) and most of their snowboarding gear was half off or more. The snow sports salesperson helped me pick out the right board for my experience level and riding expectations. I was also able to score a board bag for less than I would've paid at places like REI or Dick's. All in all, I was able to stock up on bunch of new gear for relatively cheap. I was expecting to only use my new gear for a few weeks but the extra long winter we had allowed me to keep riding well into April. Hoigaard's is definitely the place you need to head if you're looking to buy new or upgrade. read more

We waited over 30 minutes to get someone to help us. The guy who started helping us got distracted and began helping another customer. When he realized he ditched us he sent another lady over. I have no idea what was going on. We've gone to Hoigaards for all my kids and their ski boots every year for the past 7 years and it just keeps getting worse. We went to Gear West last year and they were very attentive and super helpful. I'm sitting here wondering why I didn't go back there. Also, after speaking with A salesperson in the shop, I was getting the feeling that the new ownership by Vail resorts may be the reason why things felt "off." She made mention of the "bean counters" taking away long term employee's ability to adjust pricing and the fact the company canceled product when Covid started which has left them with low stock. I got the impression the employees were not happy working there due to an overbearing, out of touch and out of state parent company. Must be frustrating. I would recommend skipping Hoigaards and trying a different/locally owned place to buy skis like Gear West. read more

They have a pretty decent selection of gear from good names. Seem to be on the pricey side of things. I worked in ski shops and outdoor shops for years, and if I ever treated a customer the way I was treated going into this place I'd have been promptly fired at any one of them. There is an older gentleman that worked there who seemed annoyed helping me when I came in with a boatload of questions, and actually pawned me off to someone else who was not knowledgeable before I had finished. Before that, in the ski shop I was just browsing around and was treated straight up rudely by another associate. Will not go into detail but it was actually rude, he was snappy and short with me and I felt like I had made a mistake and was being scolded for asking him if they had a particular boot in a particular size. I would not recommend this place for anything. Bummer because I had heard good things for year about it being a former employee of one of its competitors. read more

Great store for winter sports gear! I was new to Nordic Skiing, and the staff was great in helping me find skiis, boots, poles, gloves, socks, etc that fit my needs. The store has a great selection, and the staff really does care that you find what you want. The store is expensive, but the products are high quality. They do give discounts (15-20%) for high school skiers, so it made things more affordable. I would definitely come here again for winter gear due to the exceptional service and range of items. read more

I remember this place when it was located across the street, which is now a largely vacant apartment building. While I don't question why they sold out, I do question moving into a location 1/4 its old size in a strip mall now paying rent forever. Unlike their local competitor, Midwest mountaineering. Hoigaards staff seems genuinely interested in helping you rather then judging or patronizing you. Parking has no gimmicks, strings or hassles. The store is clean and organized and is in a much more convenient location. The alpine ski section here is very good. I think this is also the goto place is you are into downhill racing. While slightly oriented towards road bikes, I think the bike department in the summer is good here. If you want to avoid the big box and shop local, this is the place to go. read more

Not the place to shop if you're a person of color. I was shopping with my boyfriend yesterday. We were looking for snowboarding gear for his son. Neither of us were asked if we needed assistance despite quite a few sales people walking right past us. I felt very uncomfortable. I received some gifts purchased from here. I went to exchange sizes/colors and I was given the run around. I went to front counter where 3 people were working and they sent me to the ski department. There all the staff was busy so I went back to main counter where the same 3 people were and they were unwilling to help. Went back to ski area and grabbed a number. When an employee became available he was grabbed by a customer w/o number. So why have numbers. So I continue you to wait. Another employee stopped to ask if I needed help I responded yes I need to exchange these items he then told me someone will be with me shortly. Huh? So wait and finally get someone and they struggled with the POS system to exchange sizes. It all took me an hour. I will never shop there again. I would recommend REI where they are properly staffed and have systems to service simple requests. read more
